Abstract:

Allen, Richard. "The Sound of The Birds." October 146 (October 2013): 97–120. http://dx.doi.org/10.1162/octo_a_00162.

Full text
Abstract:
Having attacked people at a gas station, setting off a conflagration, birds begin to gather over Bodega Bay, accompanied by an electronic hum that sounds like the grinding of two large stones or perhaps like the wind. This electronic hum recurs at the film's conclusion, as we anxiously wait to see whether the Brenner family and Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) will make their escape from their besieged homestead. Hitchcock himself described this electronic hum as a “brooding silence” that “should give us the feeling of a waiting mass.” The sound epitomizes the experimental quality of the soundtrack of The Birds (1963). The sound accompanies the birds and is caused by their presence but is not quite of the birds, at least not the natural creatures we are familiar with. It suggests their objective presence yet evokes something alien, something larger than, or beyond, nature. Furthermore, if we follow Hitchcock's train of thought, there is a subjective aspect to this sound, as if it is colored with anxiety and expresses the internal “noise” that a fearful, acutely sensitive, self-consciously sentient listener might “hear.”

Abstract:
Abstract Motivation Metagenomics has revolutionized microbiome research by enabling researchers to characterize the composition of complex microbial communities. Taxonomic profiling is one of the critical steps in metagenomic analyses. Marker genes, which are single-copy and universally found across Bacteria and Archaea, can provide accurate estimates of taxon abundances in the sample. Results We present TIPP2, a marker gene-based abundance profiling method, which combines phylogenetic placement with statistical techniques to control classification precision and recall. TIPP2 includes an updated set of reference packages and several algorithmic improvements over the original TIPP method. We find that TIPP2 provides comparable or better estimates of abundance than other profiling methods (including Bracken, mOTUsv2 and MetaPhlAn2), and strictly dominates other methods when there are under-represented (novel) genomes present in the dataset. Availability and implementation The code for our method is freely available in open-source form at https://github.com/smirarab/sepp/blob/tipp2/README.TIPP.md. The code and procedure to create new reference packages for TIPP2 are available at https://github.com/shahnidhi/TIPP_reference_package. Abstract:
Abstract The paper represents a Punjabi corpus in the agriculture domain. There are various dialects in the Punjabi language and the main concentration is on major dialects, i.e. Majhi, Malwai and Doabi for the present study. A speech corpus of 125 isolated words is taken into consideration. These words are uttered by 100 speakers, i.e. 60 Malwi dialect speakers (30 male and 30 female), 20 Majhi dialect speakers (10 male and 10 female) and 20 Doabi dialect speakers (10 male and 10 female). Tonemes, adhak (geminated) and nasal words are selected from the corpus. Recordings have been processed through two mediums. The paper also elaborates some distinctive features of the corpus. This corpus is of quite significance for the speech recognition system. Prosodic characteristics such as intonation, rhythm and stress create a crucial impact on the speech recognition system. These characteristics vary from language to language as well as various dialects of a language. This paper portrays a comparative analysis of isolated words prosodic features of Malwi, Majhi and Doabi dialects of Punjabi language. Analysis is done using the PRAAT tool. Pitch, intensity, formant I and formant II values are extracted for toneme, adhak, nasal (bindi) and nasal (tippi) words. For all kinds of words, there is a significant variation in pitch (fundamental frequency), intensity, formant I and formant II values of male and female speakers of Malwi, Majhi and Doabi dialects. A detailed analysis has been discussed throughout this paper.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Tippe top is an example of simple moving system of rigid body with non-holonomic constraint, but the analysis of this system is not simple. A tippe top equation has been derived with Routhian reduction method and Poincaré equation, and physics computation in finding numeric solution of the dynamics of the tippe top has also been utilized by using Maple program. However, the Poincaré equation required that quasi-coordinate of the quasi-velocity is found, while in the case of the dynamics of tippe top, there is not any exact solution of the quasi-coordinate of the quasi-velocity was found. Therefore, the tippe top equation should be reduced to solve the problem. In this research, Routhian reduction was employed so that the Routhian reduction-based Poincaré equation was used to derive the tippe top equation. The method was able to derive a tippe top equation on a flat plane and tube inner surface clearly represented differential equations.
