Abstract Oceanic model simulations and model-based energy budget calculations have been used to quantitatively study the relative importance of different processes affecting the Gulf of Eilat/Aqaba dynamics and hydrographic conditions. Large seasonality among various energetic pathways is observed. Similar to other oceanic waters, a significant amount of energy is stored in the potential energy (PE) that is predominately in the form of background potential energy (BPE). During September–March PE/BPE gains energy by raising the center of mass due to atmospheric cooling. During April–August, PE

ABSTRACT: The Tiran and Sanafir are two small arid and uninhabited islands at the mouth of the Gulf of 'Aqaba, close to the Egyptian and Saudi shores. Their importance derives from their strategic location at the entrance to the Gulf of Aqaba and the maritime route to Jordan's port Aqaba and Israel's port Eilat. Since the 19th century, they have played an important role in international, regional and domestic politics, with the involvement of numerous actors: the Ottoman Empire, Britain, Italy, the United States, the kingdom of Hijaz, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel and the United Nations.

The subsidence history of each section has been calculated using standard backstripping techniques. Since the overthrow of President Mursi in mid-2013, Egypt has witnessed an authoritarian rollback and shrinking spaces for civil society. Nationalist discourses have villified popular protest and channelled pressure for reform into a state-centric model of governance. Despite this hostile environment for social mobilization, protest has persisted. Contested Legitimacies explores this resilience of contentious politics through a multimethod approach that is attuned to the physical and discursive interactions among key players in Egypt’s protest arena.
