Tissue ischaemia has a varied aetiology and presentation, with the potential to affect multiple organ systems and lead to significant morbidity and mortality. The detection of clinical ischaemia with microdialysis sampling forms the primary focus of this work. Microdialysis (MD) allows the extracellular composition of tissue to be characterised in vivo and is incorporated into a new class of analyser. Rapid sampling on-line microdialysis (rsMD), analyses the dialysis liquid stream from a patient on-line, at high time resolution. The device has been validated in ex-vivo bench work and animal st

The purpose of this study was to determine the levels of whole tissue, cytosolic, and mitochondrial glutathione in the tissue zones of the rat kidney. Reduced (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) were measured spectrophotometrically in tissue homogenates. Differential centrifugation was used to isolate the cytosolic and mitochondrial fractions. Cortical GSH and GSSG levels accounted for 51% and 60%, respectively, of the GSH and GSSG levels in the whole kidney. Cytosolic GSH levels were similar in the cortex and medulla but lower in the papilla. Cytosolic GSSG levels were highest in the cortex

In this study we applied ultra-short laser pulses on a biological sample (Arabidopsis), in order to cut it precisely in a square pattern and subsequently use it for studying stress generation mechanisms. For this purpose, we utilized femtosecond laser pulses at 100 fs pulse width and 80 MHz repetition rate. We took two processing parameters into consideration such as laser power, laser exposure time which is related to the stage speed. Therefore, we were able to find the laser optimum conditions for ablation of biological tissues. The mutant and wildtype (control) obtained from laser cutting w

The fundamental challenge to prevent species from going extinct is difficult but of grave importance. Halting species from going extinct minimizes the loss of biodiversity. One way of researching biodiversity is by studying species on a genetic level. This creates a dilemma as studying species genetically often requires using destructive sampling and is not desirable or even allowed when studying threatened species. Thus, there is a necessity for alternate sampling methods. In this study both non-lethal and lethal methods were used to gather tissues from the butterfly species Vanessa cardui. T

One common problem in omics data analysis is missing values, which can arise due to various reasons, such as poor tissue quality and insufficient sample volumes. Instead of discarding missing values and related data, imputation approaches offer an alternative means of handling missing data. However, the imputation of missing omics data is a non-trivial task. Difficulties mainly come from high dimensionality, non-linear or nonmonotonic relationships within features, technical variations introduced by sampling methods, sample heterogeneity, and the non-random missingness mechanism.
