Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to apply local grammar (LG) to develop an indexing system which automatically extracts keywords from titles of Lebanese official journals. Design/methodology/approach – To build LG for our system, the first word that plays the determinant role in understanding the meaning of a title is analyzed and grouped as the initial state. These steps are repeated recursively for the whole words. As a new title is introduced, the first word determines which LG should be applied to suggest or generate further potential keywords based on a set of features calculated for each node of a title. Findings – The overall performance of our system is 67 per cent, which means that 67 per cent of the keywords extracted manually have been extracted by our system. This empirical result shows the validity of this study’s approach after taking into consideration the below-mentioned limitations. Research limitations/implications – The system has two limitations. First, it is applied to a sample of 5,747 titles and it can be developed to generate all finite state automata for all titles. The other limitation is that named entities are not processed due to their varieties that require specific ontology. Originality/value – Almost all keyword extraction systems apply statistical, linguistic or hybrid approaches to extract keywords from texts. This paper contributes to the development of an automatic indexing system to replace the expensive human indexing by taking advantages of LG, which is mainly applied to extract time, date and proper names from texts.

Abstract:
In this paper, we propose new keywords extraction method based on texts classification. We first classify texts to determine their categories. Then determine weights of candidate words according to both their frequency and the relevance between text words and text category. Finally, keywords are extracted by sorting weights of candidate words. We conduct this experiment to show that on the premise of accurate text classification, this method can extract keywords effectively from text without title or with deviated title which can not reflect texts subject. Objective selecting of candidate word weighting function still needs to be further researched.

This article presents findings from pilot testing of elements of an information extraction (IE) prototype designed to assist legal researchers in engaging with case law databases. The prototype that was piloted seeks to extract, from legal case documents, relevant and accurate information on cases referred to (CRTs) in the source cases. Testing of CRT extraction from 50 source cases resulted in only 38% (n = 19) of the extractions providing an accurate number of CRTs. In respect of the prototype’s extraction of CRT attributes (case title, date, journal, and action), none of the 50 extractions produced fully accurate attribute information. The article outlines the prototype, the pilot testing process, and the test findings, and then concludes with a discussion of where the prototype needs to be improved.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to evaluate the larvicidal activity of diterpenoids obtained from the oil-resin of Copaifera reticulata against Aedes aegypti larvae, the principal vector of dengue and urban yellow fever. Four diterpenes were obtained from oil-resin extraction with organic solvents and subsequent chromatographic and spectroscopic procedures allowed to isolation and identification of these compounds as 3-b-acetoxylabdan-8(17)-13-dien-15-oic acid (1), alepterolic acid (2), 3-b-hidroxylabdan-8(17)-en-15-oic acid (3), and ent-agatic acid (4). Each compound was previously dissolved in dimethylsulphoxide, and distilled water was added to obtain the desired concentrations. Twenty larvae of third instars were placed into plastic beckers, containing the solution test (25 mL), in a five repetitions scheme, and their mortality, indicated by torpor and darkening of the cephalic capsule, was recorded after 48h. Probit analyses were used to determine lethal concentrations (LC50 and LC90) and their respective 95% confidence intervals. This study showed that only diterpenoids 1 and 2 exhibited larvicidal properties with LC50 of 0.8 ppm and 87.3 ppm, respectively, revealing the former as the most toxic compound against third instars of Ae. aegypti. Therefore, this compound seems to be an interesting source for new metabolite to be exploited.

Abstract:
The rapid growth of text based information on the World Wide Web and various applications making use of this data motivates the need for efficient and effective methods to identify and separate the “main content” from the additional content items, such as navigation menus, advertisements, design elements or legal disclaimers. Firstly, in this thesis, we study, develop, and evaluate R2L, DANA, DANAg, and AdDANAg, a family of novel algorithms for extracting the main content of web documents. The main concept behind R2L, which also provided the initial idea and motivation for the other three algorithms, is to use well particularities of Right-to-Left languages for obtaining the main content of web pages. As the English character set and the Right-to-Left character set are encoded in different intervals of the Unicode character set, we can efficiently distinguish the Right-to-Left characters from the English ones in an HTML file. This enables the R2L approach to recognize areas of the HTML file with a high density of Right-to-Left characters and a low density of characters from the English character set. Having recognized these areas, R2L can successfully separate only the Right-to-Left characters. The first extension of the R2L, DANA, improves effectiveness of the baseline algorithm by employing an HTML parser in a post processing phase of R2L for extracting the main content from areas with a high density of Right-to-Left characters. DANAg is the second extension of the R2L and generalizes the idea of R2L to render it language independent. AdDANAg, the third extension of R2L, integrates a new preprocessing step to normalize the hyperlink tags. The presented approaches are analyzed under the aspects of efficiency and effectiveness. We compare them to several established main content extraction algorithms and show that we extend the state-of-the-art in terms of both, efficiency and effectiveness. Secondly, automatically extracting the headline of web articles has many applications. We develop and evaluate a content-based and language-independent approach, TitleFinder, for unsupervised extraction of the headline of web articles.

The development model guided by mass tourism adopted mainly from the 1980s on the northeast coast and, more specifically, in Cearà triggered numerous conflicts with local populations. These divisions were the genesis of the resistance movements and community mobilization in these areas. It is in this context that emerges community tourism. Treated by some as the true sustainable tourism by bringing the value of cultural identity and the creation of direct benefits to the community at the center of planning, which allows give greater decision-making power to local people themselves. This is how the main purpose of this study arises: the analysis of the basic tourism and its participative management as a real strategy for achieving sustainable development. A review of the theoretical framework was carried out building the concept of sustainability, in addition to the design and correlation between the development of coastal tourism in Cearà and the emergence of community tourism. For case study was chosen a community among 15 communities that develop based tourism in CearÃ. The community of Batoqueâs Extractive Reserve, located in the CearÃâs East coast, part of the Community Tourism Network of Cearà since its foundation (2008). We built three semi-structured questionnaires involving the key dimensions of sustainable development, specific to interviews with each group (held between May and July 2014): general population (62 local families), emphasizing that the approach used was random and simple; local entrepreneurs (owners of the main tourist facilities); community leaders and institutions that maintains a relationship with the activity; as well as on-site observations. From the field results it was concluded that the distance of the actions planned in theory about the actions applied in practice does not allow a sustainable nature to the tourism developed by Batoqueâs community. Although it is recognized that the sustainability process is gradual and based tourism has a real potential to promote it locally. The lack of institutionalization, the disorganized management, weak coordination and public participation in decisions, the hegemony of private interests, among other factors, hamper the best generation and distribution of income, the formation of clusters, better management of ecosystems, while weakening the interest of the population to join the planning of the activity.

First, the title region in a poster image is located using gradient-conversion method, and then all character images in the region are segmented using the watershed approach. Next, two kinds of features about the texture and shape defined in the MPEG-7 specification are extracted to train an SVM classifier used in recognizing those character images into words. Finally, we employ PyEnchant on each word for spelling check or even spelling revision. The experimental results show that the correct rate of title recognition would reach 90%, if the title region in a poster image can be located and segmented successfully.

Among the record fields in library bibliographies, the title and the author can mainly reflect the content of the collections. The title can be described in a more flexible way; however it does not exactly reflect the content of the collection. Also, the information load is different. If collections are automatically classified only by titles, it may not reach a reasonable success in the automatic classification. In light of the potential problems, the research puts forward a strategy, which aims to utilise both search engine, such as Google, to expand document features and the author as a record field to assist classifying. The experiment proves that this proposed strategy is helpful for promoting the effect of automatic bibliography classification effectively and efficiently.

碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>資訊科學與工程研究所<br>95<br>This investigation develops a new multilayer implicit connection graph-based gridless router with bin system. This work retains all advantages of the previous version and improves the speed of graph construction and pseudo tile extraction. The grid-lines derived from the blockages which fall entirely outside the routing region increase the complexity of routing graph and decelerate path search. Unlike the previous work that scans all grid-lines inside the routing region for filtering out redundant grid-lines, this work generates a simplified routing graph by extracting blockages in the routing region explicitly. Furthermore, continuous space tiles are combined as a pseudo maximum horizontally or vertically stripped tile for accelerating path search. By tagging blockage on the routing graph, legality check on each tile needs little query overload such that pseudo tile extraction is about ten times faster than querying the well-known slit plus interval tree. Experimental results reveal that this new gridless router around two times faster than the previous version. General-purpose routing by this work also outperforms all multilevel gridless routers with runtimes that are approximately 3.5x to 86.8x faster.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣科技大學<br>資訊工程系<br>92<br>Semantic similarity measurement is an important research domain in information retrieval and information integration. Since the semantic similarity’s object documents, which we care about, have different properties, the corresponding semantic similarity measurement should make changes in the information integration concept. In the financial domain, the news titles show most information of total news articles. At the same time, the messages which are not the facts would not be shown in the news titles frequently. Therefore the semantic similarity measurement of financial news titles can be used to replace the semantic similarity measurement of whole financial news articles in order to improve the time consuming and reduce the number of keywords. When the documents are composed by a few amount of keywords, i.e. the financial news titles, the difficulty to measure semantic similarity of these documents is that the different documents makes the resemble vector by their keyword sets. Based on the reason, we provide a frame-like structure, named “Event Frame”, to archive the Chinese financial news titles in order to include the classification information of the financial news titles and compute the relation between two Chinese financial news titles based on the Event Frame structure in this thesis. This semantic similarity measurement of the Chinese financial news titles is based on constructing the Event Frame structure as the template of a Chinese financial news title. A semantic similarity function is used to integrate both the relation of Event Frames of the financial news titles and the relation between the keywords between the keywords of these titles. It concerns the relation between the basic meanings of two news titles and reduces the comparing time. The result of this approach shows that the Event Frame extracting has high precision as man-made and the provided semantic similarity measurement emphasizes the relation between the basic meanings of two news titles rather than the relation of keywords. Besides, the proposed similarity measurement retrieves the information of keywords since sometimes humans think that two news titles are similar only if the intersection of keyword sets in two news titles is large. Therefore, we can differentiate the Chinese financial news titles which mention the same event from all the Chinese financial news titles by the semantic similarity measurement based on Event Frame extracting.

Abstract:
Aroma in rice is unique and a superior grain quality trait, varieties especially Basmati and Jasmine-type are fetching a high export price in the International markets. Among the identified volatile aroma compounds, 2AP (2 acetyl-1-pyrroline) is believed to be the distinctive biochemical compound contributing the flavor in rice. Genetically, aroma in rice arises by the phenotypic expression of spontaneous recessive mutations of the OsBadh2 gene (also known as fgr/badh2 /osbadh2/os2AP gene) which was mapped on chromosome 8. An 8-bp deletion in the exon 7 of this gene was reported to result in truncation of betaine aldehyde dehydrogenease enzyme whose loss-of-function lead to the accumulation of a major aromatic compound (2AP) in fragrant rice. Among the different sampling methods and analytical techniques for the extraction and quantification of scentedness, simultaneous distillation extraction (SDE) is traditional and normalized, whereas solid-phase micro extraction (SPME) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) are new, very simple, rapid, efficient and most importantly solvent-free methods. These methods are coupled with Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS), Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) and/or Gas chromatography olfactometry (GC-O) and also with sensory evaluation for readily examining 2AP compound found in rice. The major factor affecting the aroma in rice was their genetic makeup. However, the aroma quality may be differed due to different planting, pre-harvest and postharvest handling and storage. For a more extensive elucidation of all effective and fundamental factors contributing to fragrance, it is essential to explore target quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and their inheritance and locations.

Abstract:
Human beings have relied on herbs and medicinal plants as sources of food and remedy from time immemorial. Bioactive compounds from plants are currently the subject of much research interest, but their extraction as part of phytochemical and/or biological investigations present specific challenges. Herbalists or scientists have developed many protocols of extraction of bioactive ingredients to ensure the effectiveness and the efficacy of crude drugs that were used to get relief from sickness. With the advent of new leads from plants such as morphine, quinine, taxol, artemisinin, and alkaloids from Voacanga species, a lot of attention is paid to the mode of extraction of active phytochemicals to limit the cost linked to the synthesis and isolation. Thus, the extraction of active compounds from plants needs appropriate extraction methods and techniques that provide bioactive ingredients-rich extracts and fractions. The extraction procedures, therefore, play a critical role in the yield, the nature of phytochemical content, etc. This chapter aims to present, describe, and compare extraction procedures of bioactive compounds from herbs and medicinal plants.

In Multimedia Information Retrieval [Working Title]. IntechOpen, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.93960.

Full text
Abstract:
Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a technology able to measure information about the spectral reflectance or transmission of light from the surface. The spectral data, usually within the ultraviolet and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, provide information about the interaction between light and different materials within the image. This fact enables the identification of different materials based on such spectral information. In recent years, this technology is being actively explored for clinical applications. One of the most relevant challenges in medical HSI is the information extraction, where image processing methods are used to extract useful information for disease detection and diagnosis. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the information extraction techniques for HSI. First, we introduce the background of HSI, and the main motivations of its usage for medical applications. Second, we present information extraction techniques based on both light propagation models within tissue and machine learning approaches. Then, we survey the usage of such information extraction techniques in HSI biomedical research applications. Finally, we discuss the main advantages and disadvantages of the most commonly used image processing approaches and the current challenges in HSI information extraction techniques in clinical applications.

Full text
Abstract:
There are more than 100 different arsenic with different characteristics in the soil-water-plant ecosystem. The identification and quantification of individual arsenic species is essential for understanding the distribution, environmental fate and behavior, metabolism and toxicity of arsenic. Due to the hazardous nature of arsenic, people have a high interest in the measurement of arsenic species. The reaction of the formation of arsenic speciation in the soil-water-plant environment is briefly studied. There is little information on methods used to quantify arsenic forms and species in contaminated soil, water and plant. The purpose of this article is to understand the available sample pretreatment, extraction, separation, detection and method validation techniques for arsenic speciation analysis of arsenic species in soil, water and plant. The performances of various sample preparation and extraction processes, as well as effective separation techniques, that contribute greatly to excellent sensitivity and selectivity in arsenic speciation when coupling with suitable detection mode, and method validity are discussed. The outlines of arsenic speciation techniques are discussed in view of the importance to the completeness and accuracy of analytical data in the soil-water-plant samples. To develop cheap, fast, sensitive, and reproducible techniques with low detection limits, still needed to confine research on arsenic speciation present in environmental matrices.

Abstract:
Concept extraction aims to find words or phrases describing a concept from massive texts. Recently, researchers propose many neural network-based methods to automatically extract concepts. Although these methods for this task show promising results, they ignore structured information in the raw textual data (e.g., title, topic, and clue words). In this paper, we propose a novel model, named Guided Attention Concept Extraction Network (GACEN), which uses title, topic, and clue words as additional supervision to provide guidance directly. Specifically, GACEN comprises two attention networks, one of them is to gather the relevant title and topic information for each context word in the document. The other one aims to model the implicit connection between informative words (clue words) and concepts. Finally, we aggregate information from two networks as input to Conditional Random Field (CRF) to model dependencies in the output. We collected clue words for three well-studied datasets. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model outperforms the baseline models with a large margin, especially when the labeled data is insufficient.

In Twenty-Seventh International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence {IJCAI-18}. Abstract:
A job title usually implies the responsibility and the rank of a job position. While traditional job title analysis has been focused on studying the responsibilities of job titles, this paper attempts to reveal the rank of job titles. Specifically, we propose to extract job title hierarchy from employees' career trajectories. Along this line, we first quantify the Difficulty of Promotion (DOP) from one job title to another by a monotonic transformation of the length of tenure based on the assumption that a longer tenure usually implies a greater difficulty to be promoted. Then, the difference of two job title ranks is defined as a mapping of the DOP observed from job transitions. A Gaussian Bayesian Network (GBN) is adopted to model the joint distribution of the job title ranks and the DOPs in a career trajectory. Furthermore, a stochastic algorithm is developed for inferring the posterior job title rank by a given collection of DOPs in the GBN. Finally, experiments on more than 20 million job trajectories show that the job title hierarchy can be extracted precisely by the proposed method.

Evaluation of automated feature extraction algorithms using high-resolution satellite imagery across a rural-urban gradient in two unique cities in developing countries. Abstract:
Feature extraction algorithms are routinely leveraged to extract building footprints and road networks into vector format. When used in conjunction with high resolution remotely sensed imagery, machine learning enables the automation of such feature extraction workflows. However, many of the feature extraction algorithms currently available have not been thoroughly evaluated in a scientific manner within complex terrain such as the cities of developing countries. This report details the performance of three automated feature extraction (AFE) datasets: Ecopia, Tier 1, and Tier 2, at extracting building footprints and roads from high resolution satellite imagery as compared to manual digitization of the same areas. To avoid environmental bias, this assessment was done in two different regions of the world: Maracay, Venezuela and Niamey, Niger. High, medium, and low urban density sites are compared between regions. We quantify the accuracy of the data and time needed to correct the three AFE datasets against hand digitized reference data across ninety tiles in each city, selected by stratified random sampling. Within each tile, the reference data was compared against the three AFE datasets, both before and after analyst editing, using the accuracy assessment metrics of Intersection over Union and F1 Score for buildings and roads, as well as Average Path Length Similarity (APLS) to measure road network connectivity. It was found that of the three AFE tested, the Ecopia data most frequently outperformed the other AFE in accuracy and reduced the time needed for editing.
