Tkacheva, A. N. "French Film Titles with Anthroponyms: Translation Issues." Bulletin of Kemerovo State University 22, no. 1 (2020): 258–67. http://dx.doi.org/10.21603/2078-8975-2020-22-1-258-267.

Abstract:
The research objective was to analyze, classify, and describe the ways of translation of French film titles that contain anthroponyms. Proper names (surnames, nicknames, or pseudonyms) are used to add additional characteristics to the personage or to express some cultural information. The principles of translation of French anthroponyms into Russian include etymological transposition, practical transcription, morphographic method, and transliteration. The anthroponyms do not correspond semantically in different languages. Therefore, they cannot be considered identical equivalents. When translated from French into Russian, anthroponym-containing film titles often lose their stylistic and artistic value, associations, or puns. As a rule, such titles are transformed using reduction, substitution, or addition of some language elements. The transformation serves to correct a seemingly unattractive title, to link the title to the topic and genre, or to achieve commercial success. Titles with pseudonyms and nicknames of French celebrities always undergo some kind of transformation. Sometimes, translators change the title completely or borrow some elements from commercially successful films to attract the attention of the potential audience. The research results can be applied to train specialists of cinema and media industry and teach them French, as well as to develop universal rules of cinema translation.

Abstract:
Omuti is a theatrical adaptation of Amos Tutuola's work titled: The Palmwine Drinkard and His Dead Palm-wine Tapster in the Dead's Town, published in London by Faber and Faber in 1952. A year after, in 1953, a French translator, Raymond Queneau translated it into French with the title LTvrogne dans la brousse. Many long essays, theses and articles in learned journals have been devoted to this work. In addition to all this literary fortune, Kola Ogunmola, adapted it for the stage in 1962. During the 1969 Pan-African Festival of Arts in Algiers, in Algeria, the adapted play won a Silver medal for theatre. This was one of the major reasons why we translated this work into French in 1982. We encountered many problems during the translation of Omuti, the least of which are, how to render the "Longish" title into a short one, the difficulty in establishing grammatical and semantic equivalents between the Yoruba original and the French translation. Certain linguistic habits that belong to the Oral tradition of the Yoruba people, such as the use of riddles, proverbs, talking drum register etc. made the French version difficult to work on. But there is communication in spite of all the above linguistic and cultural problems.

Abstract:
Walter Scott's assertion in Rob Roy that ‘In those days possession was considerably more than eleven points of the law’ overlooked a pivotal point of Scots Law, the distinction between ownership and possession. Possession or occupancy was not ‘as good as title’ as the sixteenth-century Scottish proverb or old French saying ‘possession vaut titre’ claimed. Though the distinction between ownership and possession might have seemed a nicety to Rob Roy in the sixteenth century, by 1617 a general register of titles to land, the Register of Sasines, was established in Scotland, and has continued virtually uninterrupted until the present day. It is consequently a record of immense importance to urban historians.

Abstract:
This article analyses the intertextuality of the functional and pragmatic elements of the film text (film title, synopsis, slogan) that are a direct part of the film text’s semiotic space. The pragmatic orientation of the film title, synopsis and slogan with their main task (targeted audience capture) largely determines the pragmatic nature of intertextual allusions that occur in these film text elements. The purpose of this work is to prove the presence of intertextual connections in the functional and pragmatic elements of the film text and to consider in depth the internal intertextuality of these elements. In the course of the study, we made the following conclusions: the most acceptable for the analysis of the functional and pragmatic elements of the film text is the theory of transtextuality by G. Genette, through which the intertextuality of the film title, synopsis and slogan must be considered on the basis of the paratextuality, metatextuality and hypertextuality. The intertextuality of the functional and pragmatic elements of the film text consists in the interaction of film title, synopsis and slogan with the precedent texts and events, as well as the intertextual connection inside the class of these elements. The internal intertextuality of the functional and pragmatic elements of the film text allows the movie title, synopsis, and slogan to ensure the fulfillment of their main function that is to attract to watch the movie as many viewers as possible.

Nord, Christiane. "Paving the way to the text: Forms and Functions of Book Titles in Translation." Russian Journal of Linguistics 23, no. 2 (2019): 328–43. http://dx.doi.org/10.22363/2312-9182-2019-23-2-328-343.

Abstract:
When we are looking at the books displayed in the window of a bookshop, what first catches the eye is the title. Titles pave the way to the text, even in a literal sense. In any case, they establish a first contact with a potential readership, informing them, for example, about the genre (novel, non-fiction, children’s book) or the content of the book, praising its qualities, and, if all this raises the readers’ interest, appealing to them to buy and later read the book, or even guiding their interpretation of the text. This shows how important it is that a title is apt to fulfil all these functions - an original title in its own culture, a translated title in the target culture. It is a well-known fact that translators do not normally have the last word in the process of deciding on the title of a book they have translated. Nevertheless, if they can offer good arguments for or against certain title formulations, they might at least be heard. At any rate, just pleading for a “faithful” translation of the original title will not do. There may be a lot of arguments - and not only linguistic ones - against a literal translation, with which translators have to be familiar. The following study is based on a corpus including titles of fictional, nonfictional and children’s books in English, German, French and Spanish. After justifying the classification as titles as texts, and even a genre with its own culture-specific conventions, it aims at showing the forms and functions of book titles in order to provide a sound foundation for their translation, discussing some of the problems derived from this functional perspective.

Abstract:
Our study deals with the use of proverbs as a tool of persuasion in political discourse. Within this study we have studied and analyzed the texts of Georgian and French political articles, speeches and proverbs used therein. The analysis revealed that the proverbs found and used by us in the French discourses were not only of French origin. Also, most of the proverbs found in the French discourses were used as titles of the articles. As for the Georgian proverbs, they consisted mainly of popular proverbs well known to the Georgian public. Georgia proverbs have rarely been cited as an article title. According to the general conclusion, the use of proverbs as a tool of persuasion in the political discourse by the politicians of both countries is quite relevant. It is effective when it is persuasive and at the same time causes an emotional reaction. Quoting the proverbs, the politicians base their thinking on positions. The proverb is one of the key argumentative techniques.

Abstract:
René of Anjou (1409–80) was a major figure in the French royal family in the fifteenth century. He inherited some of his titles and lands from his brother Louis III, held previously by his father Louis II and grandfather Louis I (the second son of John II, King of France). But marriage and politics had also increased the wealth and power of the Angevins, adding to the Dukedom of Anjou the Dukedoms of Lorraine and of Bar, the County of Provence, the Kingdoms of Sicily and of Naples, and the title of King of Jerusalem. In the later phases of the Anglo-French conflicts of the fifteenth century René initially supported the Anglo-Burgundian alliance, but later (by 16 July 1429) he transferred his allegiance to the French crown. Captured by the Burgundians at the Battle of Bulgneville on 2 July 1431, he was held prisoner at Dijon until 1437. He was granted provisional liberty between 1432 and 1434, and again in 1435, and was finally released in 1437 after payment of a large ransom.

Abstract:
In 1556, Claude Roillet, a literature professor at the Collège de Bourgogne and Collège de Boncourt, published a collection of his works as a poet and dramatist under the title Varia Poemata (Paris: Guillaume Julien). This collection notably contained four Latin tragedies, which were titled Philanira, Petrus, Aman, and Catharina. Of these four works, only the first, Philanira would become the subject of a French translation published in 1563 by the Parisian press of Richard Thomas, then republished—again in Paris—by Nicolas Bonfons in 1577. This paper will examine the particulars of this French version in terms of (1) the conversion into the vernacular of the various Latin metrical forms that the author uses and (2) the equivalency of lexical expressions, and even the strategies of imitation, in a French text that demonstrates a tendency to amplify the original Latin composition.

Abstract:
The article deals with the I.S. Turgenevs last cycle Poems in prose which title has been changed several times throughout his work on it. The cycle put together the main aspects of writers previous creative works which led to the continuous search for the most suitable title to fully express authors intentions: from the original Posthuma which is focused on the life after death experience to the last Poems in prose which additionally underlines the uniqueness of the form used for Turgenevs last creative work. The study reveals the main theories on the cycles titles and the reasons behind their changes as well as suggests the own vision of the evolution of concepts after death and senile which are seemed to be bound in writers world view. The sequential analysis of the existing cycles titles undertaken in the current research finds the logic of Turgenevs title transformations where the fear of death is gradually replaced by the thoughts of future new life which will be continued beyond the Earth life. The significance of the research lies in the absence of the unified approach to the naming and understanding of the Turgenevs last cycle while the title of the book was considered to change the works perception even by Turgenevs contemporaries. The scientific novelty of the work is added by using the authors French edition of Poems in prose which up until now hasnt been studied properly. It allows to expand the material of the research and look thoroughly into Turgenevs strategy of naming his final cycle which was preserved for the foreign publication as well.

This article deals with Beckett's reading of Cervantes's in the 1930s. Sixteen notes that he took in the Notebook (MS 3000 of the Beckett Collection at Reading University), proceeding from the title of Cervantes's novel to chapter 18 of the Second Part, reveal that Beckett's attention focuses on a surprisingly small number of things for such a complex text. With three languages at play – English, French and Spanish – Beckett's manuscript entries betray his close dependence on Ferdinand de Brotonne's French translation of Cervantes's work (a mediating source which is not acknowledged in the notebook).

Abstract:
How could American students of intermediate French be the catalysts for a work of avant-garde French literature? This article centers on Le rendez-vous, an intermediate French-language textbook that combined a novel written by the French New Novelist Alain Robbe-Grillet with grammatical exercises written by Yvone Lenard, a prominent textbook author and instructor of French in the United States. Focusing on previously unexamined archives of this publication, from its release in America to the publication of Robbe-Grillet's novel in France under the title Djinn, the essay reveals an unknown literary history of transnational collaboration and exchange and places new emphasis on Robbe-Grillet's formative involvement with American higher education during his literary career. Through close reading of manuscript drafts and publishers' papers, the essay demonstrates how the dynamics of global publishing and shifting trends in language pedagogy aligned to condition the production of what would become Robbe-Grillet's most commercially successful novel.

Abstract:
Abstract As a text-type in their own right, titles and headings are intended to achieve six functions: distinctive, metatextual, phatic, referential, expressive, and appellative. Taking as a point of departure the hypothesis that translated texts have to "function" in the target situation for which they are produced by serving the purpose(s) they are intended for (which may or may not be the "same" as those of the source text), it is argued that the translator has to reconcile the conditions of functionality prevailing in the target culture with the communicative intentions of the source-title sender (= functionality + loyalty). The discussion of several examples from an extensive corpus of German, French, English, and Spanish titles and their translations shows how this methodological approach can be put into practice, establishing a model for the functional translation of other texts and text-types.

Abstract:
The French in the United States offers valuable insight on processes of identity formation among French-born individuals living permanently in the US. The book's title foreshadows the ambiguity of how the French in America are defined in objective terms, as well as their subject positioning as members of an ethnic group. For instance, Lindenfeld cautions against relying on the criterion of ancestry used in census-based rankings to study the French presence in the United States, since census identification includes people of various national origins and does not distinguish the number of intervening generations since departure from France. The limitations of the native use of the French language as a valid indicator of direct French origin neglects the fact that native speakers of French who reside in the US often possess Canadian or Caribbean lineage. Although Lindenfeld does not say so directly, relying on native use of French to identify direct immigrants from France would equally exclude the possibility of identifying French citizens who do not speak French as their first language, as well as those who were raised speaking two or more languages. Another concern raised in the book is the broad significance of the label “French American,” traditionally used to identify Americans of French ancestry, such as Cajuns in Louisiana. The designation currently enjoys a certain popularity among French immigrants because it offers a direct parallel with other immigrant groups, such as Italian Americans.

Abstract:
Soon after Marc Kojo Tovalou Houénou hurried from his tour of the United States to the French West African colony of Dahomey in 1925 to be at his dying father's side, the French governor there launched an inquiry to find out whether Houénou was the French citizen he claimed to be. Houénou had been born in Dahomey in 1887, but had spent most of his life studying and residing in France. Alhough he had only returned to Dahomey briefly in 1921, with his father's death in 1925, Houénou wanted to claim what he saw as his rightful position aschef de familleor head of his extended family in Dahomey. With this title, Houénou would have gained administrative control over his father's expansive wealth in land and property in several towns in Dahomey, and would have been the official representative for his family, especially in interactions with the French colonial government. However, Houénou was already emerging as a thorn in the side of French colonial authorities because of a series of critical articles he had written in Paris about French colonialism. Therefore, when Governor Gaston Fourn found that Houénou had, in 1915, obtained his French citizenship rights, literally permission “to enjoy (jouir) the rights of French citizen,” why was the governor relieved?

One of the participants of the war was a German soldier and writer Ernst Jünger, who described his experiences in Storm of Steel (In Stahlgewittern). His diaries are a valuable source of knowledge of the Great War. Sincere confessions of a German soldier who during the war was promoted through the ranks is also a story of a daily life on the front of both Jünger and the subordinates of the German Emperor – Wilhelm II. The diary holds a special place among books about war due to their origins – written by a German fluent in French and passionate about French literature and culture. Jünger’s dairy was translated into Polish by a soldier Janusz Gaładyk and given the title Książe piechoty. Through such a title, Gaładyk paid his respects to the German comrade. The book has a didactic character because it shows the multidimensionality of the atmosphere in the German army.Key words: France; Germany; nationalism; patriotism; I World War;

Abstract:
Abstract<title> RIASSUNTO </title>One of the members of the Académie des Sciences, biographed by Condorcet in his famous Éloges, was Marin Cureau de la Chambre, a physician and philosopher quite unknown nowadays, but nevertheless an interesting figure in XVII century French culture. His career in the medical service of the court was prompted by an early protection assured to him by the chancellor Pierre Séguier, and then reinforced by the fact that he stood high both in Richelieu's and in Mazarin's favour. A polymath, Cureau wrote at first some physical essays on various arguments ― the nature of light and of the rainbow, for instance ―, rather precociously claiming the right to use French in scientific matters. His major contribution, though, aimed to a thorough knowledge of man, i.e. of his propensities and passions, vices and virtues. In what he called L'Art de connoistre les hommes, classic physiognomy merged with other techniques, and with a peculiar, sort of hermetic worldview, into a new discipline, wich should have served in everyday life and in the management of public affairs as well.

Abstract:
Readers of Auguste Comte's Cours de Philosophie positive which began to appear just before Hegel's death might well have imagined, from the work's title, that they were about to confront an interpretation of Hegel's philosophical system. If Hegel himself had assembled his writings as systematically as his doctrines, that collective title would probably have embraced their meaning with greater accuracy than any other. The positivity of Comte's philosophy was of course strikingly different from Hegel's and was in a crucial sense meant to supplant it, replacing it with a genuinely scientific understanding of society, just as metaphysics had earlier overturned theology. Over the past hundred and fifty years or so, Comte's positive philosophy – which he also termed sociology – has in its various formulations by his disciples come to encapsulate the proper agenda of the human sciences for a post-metaphysical, post-Hegelian, age.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to analyze two Russian titles of J. Austen’s novel Sense and Sensibility translated by Irina G. Gurova (1988) and Alla Yu. Frolova (2013). The meanings of the lexemes sense and sensibility in English (in the 18–19th centuries and nowadays) are compared with the meanings of their corresponding translations in the modern Russian language. The most important meanings of the Russian lexemes are identified by using associative databases: Russian regional associative dictionary-thesaurus EVRAS (Institute of Linguistics, RAS) and Russian regional associative database SIBAS (Institute of Linguistics, RAS; Institute of Philology, SB RAS; Novosibirsk State University). In the conclusion «Разум и чувство» [razum i chuvstvo] (i.e. Reason and Feeling) by Alla Yu. Frolova is argued to be the best relevant translation of the novel title. The author of the article also suggests her own possible Russian versions of the novel title, not only taking into account the opposition of the rational and irrational components, but also reflecting the alliteration that takes place in the English original. The analysis is a part of a larger research based on studying the full-text versions of J. Austen’s novel Sense and Sensibility done by Russian and French translators.
