Abstract:
This study investigates anything that underlie the differences of the variation on the packaging variation of the news content on the title that is based on the topicalization, the materials of news title writing, clarity and complexity of the news content, reference shifting from the title to the body of the news, roles of the mediator and the source of the news, maintaining the local value of the news, comparison between the news content on the prior text, and the ideology of the news. The analysis was conducted through pragmatic identity method, referential identity method, and traditional identity method. The data were analyzed by employing discourse approach (: micro-structure), especially the connectivity between the title to the body of the news. There are many things that underlie the differences of news content packaging on the straight news. From the structure of the news element, it can be found the several topicalizations such as the topicalization of what, who, where, when, cause, manner, or the combination of two or more elements of the news. A clear and complex package of a news content on the title gives an ease to the reader to understand the news content. However, in a package which does not put the clear reference on the title, the readers are suggested to continue to read the body of the news. Then, in a package which put the source of the news and its utterance on the title, the journalist tries to enclose the relation of the reader to the source of the news. Meanwhile, in a package which put the journalist as the mediator, the readers are invited to understand the content of the news based on their understanding and interpretation. As a commodity, any packages are utilized so that the news papers are not left behind by the readers. In a news which contains local value, the local utterances are maintained for the readers from other area to learn. Finally, in the package of the news content, the selection of the news topics becomes the ideologies which are harmonized with their vision-mission.

Abstract:
This descriptive-qualitative study aims at describing the linguistic form on news title. Related to data classification, this study uses segmenting immediate constituents technique. This technique is also utilized to separate the elements of the sentence function. The data is combined based on the similarities of their pattern and category. Furthermore, in order to classify the similarity of the meaning on the phrase or clause on title, this study provides the paraphrase and substitutes the constituent position of function in clause to recognize the arrangement. Moreover, in identifying the constituent of omitted clause, the technique is by inserting or expanding the structure of the title. The variation of the linguistic form is also based on whether or not the figurative language of the title appears. The news title is written by considering these several aspects: phonology, lexicon, grammatical, sentence modus, cohesion, and figurative language. Those aspects are intended to fulfill several functions, such as informing, influencing, preserving the social connection between the server and the receiver of the information or delivering the response about a phenomenon. Based on these several aspects, the characteristics of the linguistics of the titles give the practically ease of understanding for those who are learning to write the straight news discourse.

Abstract:
In modern Internet media, the function of searching for material by the words used in the title is added to its the nominal, informational, appellate, and advertising functions; often the headline is the only read element of the publication. News headlines create a kind of media picture of the world. Some of the headlines in the Internet media are purely informative, they exactly reproduce the content of the news. "Partially informative" headlines provide incomplete information and therefore may reflect distorted reality. Encouraging, intriguing headlines encourage reading. Rarely is there an intellectual variety of advertising and intriguing title, built on associations with images of literature, science, art, the use of phraseology, antonyms, paronyms and more. Such a title requires a certain level of knowledge from the recipient. The desire for sensationalism determine other trends that often go beyond journalistic standards. The title may not reflect the content of the journalistic work, distort the facts. Common in some online media are clickbaits - headlines that make the user click on them. They used manipulations with quantity; words with the possibility of double interpretation are used; negative information about the minority is provided, while positive information about the majority is indicated only in the text of the publication; the title takes the form of a question to which the publication gives a negative answer. The low linguistic and professional competence of the authors leads to distortion of the information in the titles. Today there are many reasons to consider the title as an completed work, because the recipient often reads only it. However, in modern headlines there is less and less literary and linguistic creativity, skillful use of vocabulary and phraseology. The informativeness of the title comes to the fore, but the information is often inaccurate, consciously or unconsciously distorted, which can lead to violations of ethical norms, distortions in the reproduction of reality.

Abstract:
Abstract In the last decade, the new means of communication have determined substantial changes in human behavior and in the way individuals interact with each other. Besides the numerous benefits and opportunities that have arisen throughout the digitalization process, both for individuals as well as for private companies and state institutions, the widespread use of the Internet has generated vulnerabilities and threats. One of the most consistent concerns related to the new means of communication, especially social media platforms, refers to fake news. In recent years, major events including the 2016 presidential election in the US, Brexit, and the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic have proven the negative effects of fake news on society. In this paper, we use an eye-tracking experiment to determine the unconscious reactions of consumers regarding the attraction potential of a fake news manner written article about a celebrity couple. The results of the experiment for this magazine’s article, with a fake title about the celebrity couple, show that the participants focus their attention on celebrities and fake titles mostly. The picture of the celebrities and the fake title of the article beats the other areas from the article and less on the information in the text. The research proves empirically that consumers are more attentive to celebrity pictures and fake breaking news titles and less to real information in the article. To sum up, testimonials and fake news play an important role in attracting publicity and influencing consumer behavior.

Abstract:
Combating the spread of fake news remains a difficult problem. For this reason, it is increasingly urgent to understand the phenomenon of fake news. This review aims to see why fake news is widely shared on social media and why some people believe it. The presentation of its structure (from the images chosen, the format of the titles and the language used in the text) can explain the reasons for going viral and what factors are associated with the belief in fake news. We show that fake news explores all possible aspects to attract the reader’s attention, from the formation of the title to the language used throughout the body of the text. The proliferation and success of fake news are associated with its characteristics (more surreal, exaggerated, impressive, emotional, persuasive, clickbait, shocking images), which seem to be strategically thought out and exploited by the creators of fake news. This review shows that fake news continues to be widely shared and consumed because that is the main objective of its creators. Although some studies do not support these correlations, it appears that conservatives, right-wing people, the elderly and less educated people are more likely to believe and spread fake news.

From 1513 to 1640, news pamphlets informed and entertained the English. Such publications have been difficult to identify and little has been written about them. More than 1,200 pamphlets were identified by reviewing entries in the Short Title Catalogue. They were then analyzed by numbers produced and subject matter. Factors that news pamphlets may share with modern news formats - including subject matter, sales methods, and newsgathering techniques - are described. Their characteristic tone is also examined. It is suggested that news pamphlets may help media historians examine what is universal about the news and what is culturally influenced.

Abstract:
Abstract The effect of female job titles on the credibility of medical specialists Speakers of Dutch as spoken in the Netherlands often use masculine job titles for female professionals. We tested the influence of gender(in)congruent job titles on the credibility of medical specialists in Dutch as spoken in the Netherlands. More specifically, we investigated whether the credibility of female medical specialists is boosted by referring to them with a masculine job title (e.g., neuroloog ‘neurologist (masc.)’) as opposed to a feminine job title (e.g., neurologe ‘neurologist (fem.)’). We also tested if this effect is moderated by participant gender. We constructed three news articles in which a medical specialist – either a neurologist, oncologist or a surgeon – shared their opinion on a health topic. The medical specialist was referred to by either the masculine or the feminine job title, thereby being incongruent or congruent with the female medical specialist’s actual gender, respectively. After having read the article, participants had to rate the medical specialist on several dimensions, based on which we calculated the health professional’s perceived credibility. The results of this study showed a significant difference between female and male participants regarding the influence of gender(in)congruent job titles on the credibility of medical specialists. Women perceived male and female medical specialists as equally credible, regardless of their job titles. Men, on the other hand, evaluated the credibility of female medical specialists to be lower when they were referred to with a masculine job title. Gender congruent job titles thus increase female medical specialists’ credibility from the perspective of men.

Online media faces the challenge the urgency of news delivery, fierce competition in capturing audience attention, and changing of audience demography toward younger audience. So, media workers are required to use various means to attract Internet readers. One of the ways is using simpler and more popular language in delivering the news. This study tries to find out if it prompts online news media to undermine formal language because the use of popular words that are still not accepted by Indonesia's language authority and the type of nonformal language used. Research used quantitave approach to analyze the usage frequency of nonstandardized language by two major online media in Indonesia: detik.com and kompas.com, and case study to analyze the nonstandardized titles used. Study concludes that detik.com used considerably higher percentage of nonstandardized words compared to kompas.com. In one day, around 5% of the news titles published by www.detik.com contained one or more nonstandardized words; while less than 0.002% of kompas.com's news title used nonstandarized words. Judging from the popularity of kompas.com, it can be assumed that interesting and attractive titles can still be written without nonstandardized language. Furthermore, the nonstandardized words used were mixed from foreign languages, local dialects as well as slangs usually used by youth. This assumption will be used as hypotheses for further study.

Abstract:
Background During the COVID-19 pandemic, growth in citizen engagement with social media platforms has enabled public health departments to accelerate and improve health information dissemination, developing transparency and trust between governments and citizens. In light of these benefits, it is imperative to learn the antecedents and underlying mechanisms for this to maintain and enhance engagement. Objective The aim of this study is to determine the factors and influencing mechanisms related to citizen engagement with the TikTok account of the National Health Commission of China during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods Using a web crawler, 355 short videos were collected from the Healthy China account on TikTok (with more than 3 million followers throughout China), covering the period from January 21, 2020, to April 25, 2020. The title and video length, as well as the number of likes, shares, and comments were collected for each video. After classifying them using content analysis, a series of negative binomial regression analyses were completed. Results Among the 355 videos, 154 (43.4%) related to guidance for clinicians, patients, and ordinary citizens, followed by information concerning the government’s handling of the pandemic (n=100, 28.2%), the latest news about COVID-19 (n=61, 17.2%), and appreciation toward frontline emergency services (n=40, 11.3%). Video length, titles, dialogic loop, and content type all influenced the level of citizen engagement. Specifically, video length was negatively associated with the number of likes (incidence rate ratio [IRR]=0.19, P<.001) and comments (IRR=0.39, P<.001). Title length was positively related to the number of shares (IRR=24.25, P=.01), likes (IRR=8.50, P=.03), and comments (IRR=7.85, P=.02). Dialogic loop negatively predicted the number of shares (IRR=0.56, P=.03). In comparison to appreciative information, information about the government’s handling of the situation (IRR=5.16, P<.001) and guidelines information (IRR=7.31, P<.001) were positively correlated with the number of shares, while the latest news was negatively related to the number of likes received (IRR=0.46, P=.004). More importantly, the relationship between predictors and citizen engagement was moderated by the emotional valence of video titles. Longer videos with positive titles received a higher number of likes (IRR=21.72, P=.04) and comments (IRR=10.14, P=.047). Furthermore, for short videos related to government handling of the pandemic (IRR=14.48, P=.04) and guidance for stakeholders (IRR=7.59, P=.04), positive titles received a greater number of shares. Videos related to the latest news (IRR=66.69, P=.04) received more likes if the video title displayed higher levels of positive emotion. Conclusions During the COVID-19 pandemic, videos were frequently published on government social media platforms. Video length, title, dialogic loop, and content type significantly influenced the level of citizen engagement. These relationships were moderated by the emotional valence of the video’s title. Our findings have implications for maintaining and enhancing citizen engagement via government social media.

The media only focused on how to get a lot of audience attention but ignoring the effects on the readers. The bias news would essentially causes and strengthens myths which only bring such benefit to a certain interest especially the power or those who control the rule. The research also finds that the power relation between men and women in the public area also contribute in generating such bias statements or news, not only on the choice of words but also on angle and gender perspective. The bias news represents the bias society.

News Feature Scoring (NeFS) is a sentence weighting method that used to weight the sentences in document summarization based on news features. There are several news features including word frequency, sentence position, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF), and sentences resemblance to the title. The NeFS method is able to select important sentences by calculating the frequency of words and measuring the similarity of words between sentences and titles. However, NeFS weighting method is not enough, because the method ignores the informative word in the sentence. The informative words contained in the sentence can indicate that the sentence is important. This study aims to weight the sentence in news multi-document summarization with news feature and grammatical information approach (NeFGIS). Grammatical information carried by part of speech tagging (POS Tagging) can indicate the presence of informative content. Sentence weighting with news features and grammatical information approach is expected to be able to determine sentence representatives better and be able to improve the quality of the summary results. In this study, there are 4 stages that are carried out including news selection, text preprocessing, sentence scoring, and compilation of summaries. Recall-Oriented Understanding for Gisting Evaluation (ROUGE) is used to measure the summary results with four variants of function; ROUGE-1, ROUGE-2, ROUGE-L, and ROUGE-SU4. Summary results using the proposed method (NeFGIS) are compared with summary results using sentence weighting methods with news feature and trending issue approach (NeFTIS). The NeFGIS method provides better results with increased value for recall functions in ROUGE-1, ROUGE-2, ROUGE-L, and ROUGE-SU4 respectively 20.37%, 33.33%, 1.85%, 23.14%.

Abstract:
In the press language studies, relatively little attention is paid to the titles in the printed press. Therefore, titles in the magazine “Ir” were studied and analysed from the point of view of the use of allusions. The titles of the magazine “Ir” were excerpted during the period from August 9 to October 31, 2018. These include a more detailed analysis of the titles in which the use of allusions appears vividly. The titles of the magazine reflect the topics of 2018, such as the 100th anniversary of the state’s independence, the 13th elections of the Parliament, as well as the new theatre shows. The most vivid allusions are seen in the titles of the culture section and comment pages of the magazine “Ir”. It should be mentioned that Latvian orthography rules require capitalization of all first letters of words in the names of magazines and newspapers. However, the magazine itself does not comply with this rule by using a small initial letter in its name. In the article, the capital letter is used referring to the name of the magazine, following the spelling of the Latvian language. The name of the magazine “Ir” is short, accurate, and affirming. Titles of the articles are used as a technique that interests and attracts the reader. There is a trend that titles in the magazine are purposefully designed to attract the reader’s attention. The title initially has the emotional hue that the author uses to give direction to the reader and show his attitude to the described topic and the analysed problem. A purposefully used allusion in the title encourages the reading of an article published in the magazine. Reading long text requires motivation, so the title serves as an impulse and an incentive for the reader to read the text. The titles serve as an indication to the reader of the subject under consideration. With the title, the author shows his assessment of the issue affected by the article. Dite Liepa writes: “The author of the text goes to the reader in different ways: both as a dispassionate set of facts and as a personality who independently appreciates and describes the situation, demonstrates his position and tries to deviate from the clichés of the press with the individuality and stylistic freedom of language.” (Liepa 2011, 93) The titles in the magazine “Ir” show the tendency that the authors of the magazine are vivid personalities who are interested in readers with their own language-specific style. “The title is a special type of journalistic style text, which briefly and laconically refers to the most important information in the following text. The title is read by every reader of the press edition or Internet news portal first, and then the reader thinks about the information and the need to read this article.” (Kalnača 2011, 116) Titles do not appear as a separate subject in the printed press. The titles in the printed press and the Internet differ in terms of content and structure. “One of the goals for journalists is to attract the attention of newspaper readers, make the newspaper interesting to the possibly wider range of readers. This goal can be achieved by providing news in a comprehensive, binding, intriguing way because today, people want to do and get something new, unusual, different.” (Oļehnoviča 2016, 43) Publishing aims to inform, interest, persuade, and educate. (Lokmane 2005, 32) One of the ways of attracting readers’ attention is the use of allusions. The purpose of the media is to attract a reader, but the reader must be able to perceive and understand the text in the press. The journalist’s main goal is to hand out information in a way that is easily perceived by the reader. Journalism must consider the readers’ understanding of the text. “The understanding of the text forms from the following aspects: language knowledge, situation, linguistic context, the vision of the text’s (creator and) receiver.” (Fāters 2010, 275) So, the reader must be able to capture and understand the information provided in the press. The authors of the magazine “Ir” also count on readers’ understanding of the text while trying to attract their attention. Readers firstly see the title, so it must be intriguing enough for the reader to continue reading the article.

This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with the analysis of Teun van Dijk's critical discourse, specifically the dimensions of the text. The results showed that in reporting corruption cases in Suara Merdeka, Republika, Kompas, and Jawa Pos newspapers, journalists constructed the news cases by focusing on news themes about ongoing corruption. Meanwhile, in the superstructure dimension, a number of news scheme categories are formulated to build a story, which is a summary, which is marked by two elements namely the title and lead and story, namely the overall news content from introduction to the end.

Abstract:
There is increasing scrutiny around how science is communicated to the public. For instance, a Twitter account @justsaysinmice (with 70.4K followers in January 2021) was created to call attention to news headlines that omit that mice, not humans, are the ones for whom the study findings apply. This is the case of many headlines reporting on Alzheimer disease (AD) research. AD is characterized by a degeneration of the human brain, loss of cognition, and behavioral changes, for which no treatment is available. Around 200 rodent models have been developed to study AD, even though AD is an exclusively human condition that does not occur naturally in other species and appears impervious to reproduction in artificial animal models, an information not always disclosed. It is not known what prompts writers of news stories to either omit or acknowledge, in the story’s headlines, that the study was done in mice and not in humans. Here, we raised the hypothesis that how science is reported by scientists plays a role on the news reporting. To test this hypothesis, we investigated whether an association exists between articles’ titles and news’ headlines regarding the omission, or not, of mice. To this end, we analyzed a sample of 623 open-access scientific papers indexed in PubMed in 2018 and 2019 that used mice either as models or as the biological source for experimental studies in AD research. We found a significant association (p < 0.01) between articles’ titles and news stories’ headlines, revealing that when authors omit the species in the paper’s title, writers of news stories tend to follow suit. We also found that papers not mentioning mice in their titles are more newsworthy and significantly more tweeted than papers that do. Our study shows that science reporting may affect media reporting and asks for changes in the way we report about findings obtained with animal models used to study human diseases.

Abstract:
In June 2012, Title IX celebrated its 40th anniversary to much fanfare nationwide, particularly in sporting circles. The event generated widespread news coverage, and journalists thus played a key role in situating the story of not only the law’s beginnings but its place in contemporary gender politics. This study examines the public memory of Title IX, as told in mainstream media outlets in the weeks surrounding the law’s anniversary. Using the concept of intersectionality as an analytical lens, we argue that the logic of Title IX at 40 gives rise to a narrative of progress that universalizes the experiences of girls and women and situates discrimination as an historic relic while also celebrating and rewarding apoliticism.

Abstract Fake news texts often show clear signs of the deceptive nature; still, they are shared by many users on Facebook. What could be the reason for this? The paper tries to answer the question by collecting the linguistic and non-linguistic characteristics of fake news. Linguistic characteristics include among others the exaggerating, sensational title, the eye-catching, tabloid-style text, the correct or incorrect use of terms, and the fake URLs imitating real websites; non-linguistic characteristics are expressive pictures often featuring celebrities, the use of all caps, excessive punctuation, and spelling mistakes. The corpus was compiled using snowball sampling: manipulative news not originating from big news portals were collected from the social networking website Facebook. The aim of the study is to identify the characteristics of Hungarian fake news in comparison to the English ones and to elaborate a system of aspects which help identify fake news.

This 2-part longitudinal study uses quantitative content analysis of newspapers to investigate gender dynamics in producing news on equality in sports. It analyzes differences in Title IX coverage by reporter gender to determine whether female journalists advocated more aggressively for women’s equality than their male counterparts did. The study’s first part uses content analysis of volume and placement of articles about Title IX, by journalist gender, and discusses the implications of how patterns of volume and placement have changed over time. The second part identifies advocacy and opposition frames used in the conflict over Title IX; applies content analysis of frames used, by journalist gender; and discusses implications of reporting differences and changes over time for equality. Evidence suggests that, first, social control; then a feminist perspective; and, most recently, a postfeminist worldview among female journalists influenced coverage of the law.

ABSTRACTThis study discusses the Analysis of the Content of Sensationalism in Criminal News (Case Study of the Inews Program of South Sulawesi and KompasSulsel). The basis of this research began because of the fierce competition between television, newspapers and radio and the limitations of the medium, making television shift from the emphasis on public conversation leading to entertainment. There was a tight competition in the Market News. This condition provides an increase in a phenomenon called "sensationalism". Criminal news is classified into sensational news because the topics and images displayed include sensationalism. In addition, criminal news also has the ability to attract the attention of the public. This study aims to compare the level of sensationalism in news programs, especially criminal news on InewsTv and KompasTv, through the InewsSulsel and KompasSulsel programs. From these comparisons, the research method used is content analysis by comparing messages from different sources. This can be seen in the news of Inews-Sulsel and Kompas-Sulsel which are packaged with the selection of certain words in the title, the use of graphics, interesting drawings and information, the borrowing of expert mouths to convey ideas, angle setting for media presentation, music use, songs and repetitive effects so that they are familiar and determine the agenda agenda [agenda setting]. The results showed that the Inews-sulsel news program was more sensational in presenting news about the chaotic case of the Kingdom of Gowa compared to the Kompas-sulsel program. Previous research has shown that typographical factors of online text may influence its readability. This study examines the effects of line length on reading speed, comprehension, and user satisfaction of online news articles. Twenty college-age students read news articles displayed in 35, 55, 75, or 95 characters per line (cpl) from a computer monitor. Comprehension was assessed using six question types — title, main idea, main factual, structure, incidental, and recognition (Dyson & Haselgrove, 2001). Results showed that passages formatted with 95 cpl resulted in faster reading speed. Structure questions were found to be more challenging overall when compared to factual and other lower-level questions. Overall satisfaction was not affected by line length; however, users indicated a strong preference for the extreme line lengths.

Abstract:
The primary objective of this work was to study news items about libraries published in the different communications media of the Region of Extremadura (Spain) in recent years in order to see what impact and visibility libraries have had in those media. A secondary objective was to determine quantitatively whether the complex economic crisis the country has suffered was reflected in any decrease in the number of news items about libraries. For this, a total of 3206 news articles was collected. After their analysis in detail, they were reduced to the 490 which the study’s results address. This decrease by a factor of about seven in the final news items selected was because the title or the first few paragraphs of the news item did not exactly express its content. As a consequence, a qualitative analysis of the content was necessary. The conclusion reached was that the economic crisis suffered by Spain had indeed been reflected in an evolution undergone by news items about libraries in the media. Although the numbers of those items decreased in the period analysed (from 2007/2008 to 2012/2013) coinciding with the crisis, there was an upswing in 2013 compared with 2012 which may reflect the much hoped for ‘green shoots’ of recovery of the Spanish economy.

Approximately 90.3% reported age, 97.3% reported gender and 64.3% reported the marital status of the victims. Furthermore, 68% reported the methods of suicide in headline or title, 40.5% shown the picture of the victims and 56.6% shown illustration only, and 67.2% reported life event related to suicide act. Conclusion: The vast majority of online newspapers in Indonesia exaggerate suicide news. They rarely inform the readers that there is hope and help available. The majority also do not conform to the WHO media guidelines.

Abstract:
The theory of theme and rheme and the patterns of thematic progression are not only two important parts of the systemic functional grammar but also an important means of discourse analysis. With thematic structure theory and patterns of thematic progression as the theoretical support, this research makes a combination of theoretical research and discourse analysis. This paper aims to find out the application and characteristics of the theme and rheme structure in English news discourse. After choosing the data from BBC (website:https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-51403795) reporting on 7th February 2020 with the title of Li Wenliang: Coronavirus Kills Chinese Whistleblower Doctor and giving a detailed analysis by empirical study. Through the analysis of the relationship between theme and rheme in the full text, we find that this text does not only apply a certain thematic progression pattern, but also applies more than one thematic progression pattern. Therefore, we come to the conclusion that thematic progression does exist in this news discourse and shows obvious characteristics and distribution. And also, parallel pattern and continuation pattern are frequently presented in this news discourse.
