Abstract: We have been making art and writing poetry together for many years. As colleagues in arts-based education research, we have journeyed together with many colleagues and students, in many research projects, in dreaming possibilities for teacher education, in promoting the value of a/r/tography as a way of understanding our intricate and composite identities as artists, researchers, and teachers. For us, seeing is not solitary. Instead, seeing is a creative practice of living well with one another in relationship to the world. So, in this article, Rita L. Irwin’s photography and Carl Leggo’s poetry come alongside in order to perform ways of attending. Keywords: A/r/tography; art; Photography; Poetry; Attending; Ekphrasis. Mots-clés : a/r/tographie, art, photographie, poésie, participation, ekphrasis.

Abstract:
Background: Anterior communicating artery (Acom) aneurysm has an association with many types of intracranial lesions. However, its association with meningioma can be challenging, which is not well addressed in the literature. Herein, we described a literature review focused on the association between Acom aneurysm and meningioma, explicitly highlighting the spatial presence between these two pathologies. We analyzed the literature according to that association with particular emphasis on location-based challenges. Furthermore, we present an illustrative case of surgically treating both lesions in one surgery utilizing the same approach. Methods: A Medline database search was conducted by the following combined formula: (Meningioma [Title/ Abstract]) AND (Aneurysm [Title/Abstract]) AND (((Anterior communicating artery [Title/Abstract]) OR (Acom [Title/Abstract])) OR Acomm [Title/Abstract]))). Additional resources were added after screening the references of the included papers. Results: Nine patients with coexistence of Acom aneurysm and meningioma were found in the literature. The coexistence of both pathologies was found in seven females and two males. The presence of an aneurysm was found to be solitary in 66.67% (n = 6/9). Furthermore, meningioma was found to be an isolated lesion in all included cases, and in 22.2% (n = 2/9), they were located ipsilaterally. The location of the meningioma to the aneurysm seems to be in proximity. Conclusion: Acom aneurysm can coexist with intracranial meningioma; this association can be spatially related intracranially. Such coexistence entails a variety of nuances and challenges that neurosurgeons encounter during the management of these complex lesions.

Full text
Abstract:
Background Pollination services provided by solitary bees, the largest group of bees worldwide, are critical to the vitality of ecosystems and agricultural systems alike. Disconcertingly, bee populations are in decline, and while no single causative factor has been identified, pesticides are believed to play a role in downward population trends. The effects of pesticides on solitary bee species have not been previously systematically cataloged and reviewed. Objectives This systematic scoping review examines available evidence for effects of pesticide exposure on solitary bees to identify data gaps and priority research needs. Methods A systematic literature search strategy was developed to identify and document reports on solitary bee pesticide exposure-effects investigations. Literature was subsequently screened for relevance using a Population, Exposures, Comparators, and Outcomes (PECO) statement and organized into a systematic evidence map. Investigations were organized by effect category (lethal effects on immatures, lethal effects on adults, sublethal effects on immatures, and sublethal effects on adults), species, pesticide class, and publication year. Results A comprehensive literature search of Web of Science and ProQuest Agricultural & Environmental Science supplemented by targeted internet searching and reference mining yielded 176 reports and publications for title and abstract screening and 65 that met PECO criteria (22 included lethal and 43 included sublethal effects endpoints). Relevant design details (pesticide, test compound configuration, study type, species, sex, exposure duration) were extracted into literature inventory tables to reveal the extent endpoints have been investigated and areas in need of additional research. Conclusions Evidence mapping revealed diversity in the pesticides and endpoints studied across the database. However, dilution across bee species, lack of complementary laboratory work and paucity of replicated investigations complicate efforts to interpret and apply available data to support pesticide risk assessment.

Abstract:

Abstract:
‘You can never cross the Pont Neuf without seeing a monk, a white horse and a whore’, ran the proverb – which was hard luck on the two ladies who stood there and saw the first two but could not find the third: ‘Pour la catin, vous et moi nous n’en sommes pas en peines’. Members of the religious Orders in their costumes of black, white, brown and grey were a feature of the scene in the streets of every town, and everyone had a monk or nun among their relatives. Voltaire’s sardonic examples of the characteristic features of the civilisation of his day included them: ‘man will always be what he is now; this does not mean to say, however, that there will always be fine cities, cannons firing a shot of 24 lbs weight, comic operas and convents of nuns’. Routine gossip slipped naturally into analogies drawn from the cloister – she is as fat as a monk; they were like children at a window crying out when they first see a Capucin friar; you are like a novice who climbs the walls looking for a lover, while the nuns in the chapel pray for her. Voltaire uses monastic titles in jocular descriptions of himself and his friends. He is the ‘old hermit’, the ‘lay brother’, the ‘solitary’, ‘brother Voltaire, dead to the world and in love with his cell and his convent’, and once, when his play Octave et le jeune Pompée was a flop, he decided to be, for a while, ‘the little ex-Jesuit’, ‘le petit défroqué’. He hopes ‘brother’ Helvétius will be elected to the Academy: ‘these are the most ardent prayers of the monk Voltairius, who from his lonely cell unites himself in spirit with his brethren’. The badinage of monastic seclusion hinted at protest at his long exile from Paris; it also served to mask the social distinctions, which, in spite of familiarity and, even, friendship, were never forgotten between the court grandees and the intellectuals. It was easier for Choiseul to write to him as ‘mon cher solitaire’, just as Voltaire avoided routine sycophancy by writing, with exaggerated deference, to Richelieu as ‘mon héros’.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Dusty plasma offers an extensive study of space and astrophysical environments. In this chapter, we have studied some of the basic properties of dusty plasmas, interaction of dust and plasma particles, and the effect of intramolecular attraction and repulsion between these plasma and dust grain particles. During these investigations, we have discussed a few basic relations of dusty plasma and the effect of dust particles on the nonlinear wave structures in dusty plasma. Here, we have also studied the various aspects of dust-acoustic solitary waves (DASWs) in inhomogeneous plasma. To study and analyze the various aspects of DAWs in inhomogeneous plasmas, the governing fluid equations of plasmas are considered to derive the Korteweg de-Vries (KdV) equation. The solution of the KdV equation is obtained as soliton or solitary wave. The solitary wave solution indicates the various characteristics of DASWs in the inhomogeneous dusty plasma. In this chapter, a systematic and extensive study on DAWs is also included for the inhomogeneous and unmagnetized plasmas.

Abstract:
Heterosis is a solitary means of exploiting hybrid vigor in crop plants. Given its yield advantage and economic importance, several hybrids in rice have been commercialized in more than 40 countries, which has created a huge seed industry worldwide. India has made commendable progress and commercialized 117 three-line indica hybrids for different ecology and duration (115–150 days), which accounted for 6.8% of total rice area in the country. Besides, several indigenous CMS lines developed in diversified genetic and cytoplasmic backgrounds are being utilized in hybrid rice breeding. NRRI, which has been pioneering to start with the technology, has developed three popular rice hybrids, viz., Ajay, Rajalaxmi, and CR Dhan 701 for irrigated-shallow lowland ecosystem. Biotechnological intervention has supplemented immensely in excavating desirable genomic regions and their deployment for further genetic enhancement and sustainability in rice hybrids. Besides, hybrid seed production creates additional job opportunity (100–105 more-man days) and comparatively more net income (70% more than production cost) than HYVs. Hence, this technology has great scope for further enhancement in per se rice productivity and livelihood of the nation.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter titled Nodules and Masses discusses these frequent imaging manifestations of primary lung cancer. A lung nodule is a roughly spherical, circumscribed density that measures < 3 cm. A lung mass is larger than 3 cm. Lung cancer may manifest as a solitary pulmonary nodule or mass. Most solitary pulmonary nodules on radiographs are benign, and the majority represent granulomas and intrapulmonary lymph nodes. Larger lung nodules and lung masses are more likely to be malignant. Nodule assessment includes determination of size, morphology, attenuation, metabolic activity, enhancement characteristics and growth. A solid lung nodule that is stable for 2 years is generally presumed benign. Sub-solid (part-solid and ground-glass nodules) often represent indolent lung cancer, and different follow-up and management guidelines apply. Confident diagnosis of benign nodules such as granulomas is important, as these lesions do not require imaging follow-up.

Full text
Abstract:
Spinal meningiomas, which are usually benign character, rarely show an invasive course. Since they grow slowly in the intradural extramedullary space, clinical symptoms also progress slowly. It is usually diagnosed in the later periods, when the tumor reaches to large size. They most commonly show location in the thoracic region. Although it does not have a real capsule, they can be removed completely or close to total by microsurgical methods, since they are well-demarcated solitary tumors. The most important factor in the complete and safe removal of spinal meningioma is the selection of the surgical approach suitable for the size, localization, and topography of the tumor. In the postoperative period, improvement in neurological functions is observed generally and their prognosis is good. In this study, the natural history of the tumor is explained in detail, by examining the pathogenesis and predisposing factors and clinical symptomatology in the spinal meningiomas. Moreover, it has been also focused on describing the surgical approaches and operative techniques to be used in the complete and safe removal of the spinal meningioma, according to the localization and topography of the tumor.

Full text
Abstract:
Differentiated thyroid cancer is treated by surgery, radioiodine treatment, and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) suppression. The role of external beam radiotherapy is mainly palliation of radio-iodine non avid metastatic lesions and in inoperable tumors. Metastasis involving weight-bearing bones and vertebral metastasis with impending spinal cord compression are primarily treated by external radiation. External Beam Radiotherapy improves loco-regional control in patients with gross residual disease after surgical resection. Patients with extra-thyroidal disease and positive margins are treated by adjuvant external beam radiotherapy, especially when the post op radio-iodine scan is negative. External beam radiotherapy is the treatment of choice for radio-iodine non avid inoperable loco-regional recurrence. SRS alone or surgery followed by SRS is the preferred treatment for solitary brain metastasis. Whole brain radiotherapy is the treatment of choice for multiple brain metastatic disease.

Full text
Abstract:
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), remains one of the most common causes of cancer-related death globally. HCC typically arises in the setting of chronic liver disease and cirrhosis and as such, treatment must be balanced between the biology of the tumor, underlying liver function and performance status of the patient. Hepatic resection is the procedure of choice in patients with high-performance status who harbor a solitary mass (regardless of size). Before the first laparoscopic hepatectomy (LH) was described as early as 1991, open hepatectomy (OH) was the only choice for surgical treatment of liver tumors. LH indications were initially based solely on tumor location, size, and type and was only used for partial resection of the anterolateral segments. Since then, LH has been shown to share the benefits of other laparoscopic procedures, such as earlier recovery and discharge, and reduced postoperative pain; these are obtained with no differences in oncologic outcomes compared to open resection. Specific to liver resection, LH can limit the volume of intraoperative blood loss, shorten portal clamp time and decrease overall and liver-specific complications. This chapter will offer an overview of standard steps are in pursuing laparoscopic liver resection, be it for a minor segmentectomy or a lobectomy.
