Abstract:
In an effort to cut costs, newspaper chains nationwide have consolidated design operations at a few sites. These design hubs have changed the newspaper production process and removed designers from newsrooms; yet, top designers are able to work with their peers in a major city to produce all titles for a chain. This study uses a quantitative analysis of front pages collected from 435 newspapers throughout the United States to examine the quality of newspaper designs at hub and nonhub-designed newspapers. It concludes that hub designed newspapers are generally better designed than nonhub newspapers.

Abstract:
Introduction: the 1930–1945s in the history of the USSR were the era of revolutionary changes and shocks, which were reflected, among other things, on national policy. In terms of research, it seems promising to study the Soviet national discourse, its Ob-Ugric component – a kind of reflection of the restructuring realities of Khanty- Mansiysk National Okrug and at the same time their transforming power. Objective: to give characteristic of the historical development of the Soviet «Ob-Ugric» discourse in the 1930–1945s. Research materials: the titles of regional and local newspapers of the 1931–1945s, collection «The Revived People» published for the 10th anniversary of Khanty-Mansiysk Okrug, as well as minutes of meetings of the Okrug Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). Results and novelty of the research: the analysis showed that: 1. In the titles of newspapers the Ob-Ugric markers were usually used in the Soviet context, therefore their symbolic meanings were «muted», «extinguished». 2. This symbolic weakness, as well as the concentration of the most colorful markers (ethnonyms in materials devoted to languages, literature, education and folk art) clearly shows the limited recognition of the national, permissible by the Soviet officialdom in accordance with the Stalinist formula of «national in form» and «socialist in content» culture. 3. Comparison of the newspaper titles pre-war and war time indicates a weakening of positions of the Ob-Ugric. The Okrug newspaper refused to publish materials in the Khanty and Mansi languages, the use of ethnonyms of indigenous peoples, as well as other lexemes denoting the signs that distinguish the Khanty and Mansi from other ethnic groups, significantly decreased. The national theme as a whole did not disappear, but it «sank» directly into the texts, leaving newspaper titles. The national factor of mobilization continued to be used by newspapers during the war period. The novelty of the work is determined by the introduction to scientific circulation the titles of newspapers of Khanty-Mansiysk Okrug in the 1930–1945s, the study of national policy towards the Khanty and Mansi peoples as the Soviet discourse in its officious and propaganda version.

Abstract:
The historiography of nineteenth-century Irish newspapers centres on the development of a nationalist press nationally and locally, with expansion of readership and titles connected to the great waves of politicisation under O’Connell and Parnell. Studies of unionist newspapers tend to focus on Ulster or the Irish Times, whose institutional continuity maintains interest in its earlier incarnations, and whose relatively liberal nineteenth-century unionism was directed at the Dublin Protestant middle classes. There was, however, another type of nineteenth-century Southern unionist newspaper addressing a conservative audience of landlords, professionals and Church of Ireland clerics. Such diehard newspapers often clung to older business models involving limited readership, and underpinned their activities by second jobs and patronage from local elites, though the Dublin Tory press developed a somewhat wider audience.

Abstract:
This descriptive-qualitative study aims at describing the linguistic form on news title. Related to data classification, this study uses segmenting immediate constituents technique. This technique is also utilized to separate the elements of the sentence function. The data is combined based on the similarities of their pattern and category. Furthermore, in order to classify the similarity of the meaning on the phrase or clause on title, this study provides the paraphrase and substitutes the constituent position of function in clause to recognize the arrangement. Moreover, in identifying the constituent of omitted clause, the technique is by inserting or expanding the structure of the title. The variation of the linguistic form is also based on whether or not the figurative language of the title appears. The news title is written by considering these several aspects: phonology, lexicon, grammatical, sentence modus, cohesion, and figurative language. Those aspects are intended to fulfill several functions, such as informing, influencing, preserving the social connection between the server and the receiver of the information or delivering the response about a phenomenon. Based on these several aspects, the characteristics of the linguistics of the titles give the practically ease of understanding for those who are learning to write the straight news discourse.

Abstract:
This publication is the first part of the bibliography of works by the famous poet, playwright, critic, translator Nikolai Minsky (1855/1856–1937). It includes a list of the first publications of Minsky's poems (lyrics, narrative poems, poetic dramas). Both the works included in lifetime collections and those published in periodicals, as well as those remaining in manuscripts, are taken into account. When compiling the list, the author relied on the data of A.D. Alexeyev (Pushkin House), as well as personal continuous viewing of journal and newspaper periodicals, both domestic and émigré, for 1877–1937. In total, about 50 titles of journals, newspapers and almanacs of the pre-revolutionary period and about 17 titles of the same branches of periodicals of the émigré period were viewed. When describing the title of an individual poem, the compiler of the list took into account its following components: title; subtitle; revision of the first line; the presence or absence of dedication. The list reflects cases of changes in each of these components for all author collections. Reprints in non-author collections are not included. It is planned to continue the bibliography in the next issues of the journal.

Abstract:
The serialized novel in the Pałuczanin newspaper from Żnin 1927–1939In the history of the Polish press of the interwar period, a provincial publishing center located in Żnin, in Pałuki region, played a major role. In the 1930s, Żnin was home to a dynamically developing press company, offering high-circulation titles of nationwide coverage Moje Powieści, Moja Przyjaciółka. The first step towards the creation of the future Publishing House of Alfred Ksycki was the establishment of the Pałuczanin newspaper in 1927, which formed the basis for subsequent publishing initiatives. The periodical, including a few supplements, was edited in accordance with the principle of “everything for everyone”, and signalled the upcoming era of mass press. One of the ways of acquiring new readers, was the printing of novels in episodes, which started already in the first issue of the newspaper with a mini rural novel by Stanisław Kluczek, a folk writer of sensational historical novels. The newspaper featured 30 other popular novels from authors associated with the region Wanda Brzeska, Jan Andrzej Kraśny, Alojzy Kuzio, Franciszek Ksawery Tuczyński, but also those known from 19th-century French newspapers Émile Richebourg, Jules de Gastyne. The article presents the characteristics of all the titles published through the newspaper.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine gender bias in sports media from the perspective of the sports columnist. The research analyzed 1,082 sports columns written by ten columnists (five male, five female) at newspapers across the United States. The columns were scrutinized to determine if the column subject was male or female. Results found that 84.4% of the sports columns were written about male athletes or men's sports compared to only 9% devoted to female athletes and women's sports. The research also found that female sports columnists write about female sports 12.7% of the time, while male sports columns only dedicate 6% of their columns to female athletes or women's sports. Newspapers with a larger circulation were more likely to have sports columns about female sports than were newspapers with smaller readerships. Six of the columnists were then interviewed to get their opinions on gender issues in sports journalism.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate the occurrence of sexist language-use in the British online newspaper The Daily Mail. The material consists of 162 articles that were analysed by using feminist stylistics. The scope of the study was limited to selected features from feminist stylistics at word- and discourse-level. The features of linguistic sexism analysed were the use of gendered generic words, naming of females and males and how female and male characters are described. The gender of the journalists was also analysed to examine if it affected the language-use in terms of sexism. The results show that linguistic sexism is expressed to some extent at both word-level and discourse-level. At word-level linguistic sexism is expressed inthe generic use of some masculine words, the difference of how first name and surname are used to refer to women and men and in the use of titles. At the level of discourse linguistic sexism is expressed in the difference of how women and men are referred to in terms of their relationship to others and in terms of appearance. The gender of the journalist did not show any significance for the language-use in terms of sexism. Considering the limited material of the study, the results might not be suitable for generalisations. The results are nonetheless interesting and it can be concluded that the toolkit of feminist stylistic is relevant to this day and that linguistic sexism exists to some extent in the online version of The Daily Mail.

Abstract:
Since 2002 in Asia, and 2005 in Europe and the United States, press editors and advertisers have offered access to digital content and services to readers that possess a smartphone. These new forms of communication blur the traditional relationships between press editors, advertisers and readers. To study the technical and political elements concerning these new communication services, we rely on the three-layer network approach: the physical, the logical and the content infrastructure layer. The physical layer is located between the sheet of paper and the electronic device that links the user to a network. The logical layer corresponds to the form (private or public) of what is printed on the page (i.e., human readable or machine language) and the software employed (i.e., local or distant reading), be it synchronously (augmented press) or asynchronously (graphic codes, image search or image identification). The third layer concerns the way the content from the printed page are presented on the screen of the smartphone. Our study equally aims to shed light on the current legal translations of software methods: when based on content, the methods are seen to concern intellectual property law; whereas when based on computer language they concern the laws on hyperlinks. With smartphones, a printed edition evolves from an information medium to an electronic communication channel where the context and the identity of the user play an innovative role in the transmission and access to information

In this thesis, we present an automatic system to segment title characters in newspaper efficiently. The character segmentation system contains two modules: article analysis and character segmentation. In the article analysis module, we first perform image reduction and connected-component extraction. The large connected-components are next classified as picture blocks, table blocks, graph blocks, and frame blocks, and the small components are classified into text components or title components. After large block classification, we merge all text components into text blocks and merge all title components into title blocks. An article in newspaper is then extracted by performing six relation tests. In the character segmentation module, we extract bi-lines from title blocks. Then we segment Chinese characters, English letters and numerals in title lines. Touched characters are separated according to the average size. In our experiments, the character segmentation rate is about 98.9%. The correct block classification rate is about 97%. This shows the effectiveness of our proposed system.

Abstract:
The thesis "Looking through the lens of the Czech daily newspaper Mlada fronta for 65 years" examines the topic of the liberation of Czechoslovakia in May, 1945. The qualitative content analysis of selected texts available from the newspaper is used to explore the interpretation of the event in Mlada fronta. The thesis has concentrated on the development of attitudes, beliefs, ways of communications and journalistic transformation of media content concerning the liberation event over time. The main objective has been to answer the question as to whether the media portrayal of the event has remained constant or altered over the stated time period and which factors influenced the portrayal. In the conclusion of this thesis we can confirm that the monitored event has been described differently in different time periods respectively, in connection with political progress and the value of democracy in the country. The more totalitarian the regime, the more the newspaper has described freedom through preferred ideology, biased themes, dogmatic posture and offered interpretations that suited the ruling party. This indicates a form of totalitarian hegemony. During periods of greater totalitarianism, the newspaper tends to describe the theme of the freedom completely within that communist ideology. However,...

Abstract:
This chapter concentrates on regional newspapers in Munster and presents an overview of the regional press in the province during the 1914-21 period. A brief history of some of the main newspapers is provided while some of the key figures involved in those titles are also considered. However, the chapter specifically focuses on five titles, the Cork Constitution, Skibbereen Eagle, Southern Star, Clonmel Chronicle, and Kerryman. These represent a broad range of political sympathies – one unionist title, two independent titles, and two titles that were strongly associated with the Sinn Féin party. Individual sections record the origins and history of each title while the key figures involved in of each of these publications are also profiled. Additionally, the editorial commentary of all five papers between 1914 and 1921 is reviewed and analysed. All bar one of these papers were affected by the Anglo-Irish conflict – the Southern Star and Kerryman experienced censorship, suppression, and forcible closure while the Cork Constitution and Skibbereen Eagle were targeted by Irish republicans. The experiences of each of these newspapers are documented in this chapter.
