Full textThis research wishes to explore elementary school teacher’s knowledge of student anxiety. Conducted with twelve elementary teachers (Grade 1 to 6) from Quebec with semistructured interviews, it wishes more specifically to identify teacher’s knowledge on the recognition of symptoms and their understanding of underlying theoretical concepts such as causes, explanatory factors and appropriate interventions. Moreover, it wishes to describe the interventions that they put in place to prevent and reduce their pupil’s anxiety and to analyze their personal and practical sources of knowledge on the subject. Results showed that teachers appear to rely mostly on their own professional and personal experiences as the main sources of knowledge on the subject, while initial training and continuous education have little contribution to their current level of knowledge. Even if they succeed to identify some anxiety’s causes, symptoms and consequences and to describe some interventions that actually have been proved to prevent and reduce anxiety in students, the knowledge seems inequally distributed amongst participants and remain incomplete. In the light of those results, new approaches and areas of research are finally needed to improve teacher’s initial and continuous training on this topic.

Full textAlthough gender equality and diversity have made great progress in recent decades in Quebec, some workplaces are still predomiently male or female. This is the case for elementary education. Indeed, women take a great place in this domain, representing approximately 85% of teachers. This situation is not new, but it is increasingly questioned by the government and the media. The purpose of this research is to present the situation of men in elementary education. We did this by exploring the various point of view of teachers, both males and females. We met ten male teachers and ten female teachers in Quebec. Our results show that male elementary teachers have a different career path than their female colleagues. According to teachers interviewed, working conditions are not conducive to male participation in education. Some of them perceive the profession more as a vocation where the child is placed at the center of motivations. Moreover, it seems that teachers perceive some differences in the class management of men versus that of women. Finally, a greater presence of men in primary education seems to be desired by teachers, men and women, particularly to ensure a mixed image of the profession for students and allow them to have contact with a greater number of male role models.

Full textTeacher attrition is an important problem in education, especially for beginning teachers (Borman et Dowling, 2008!; Macdonald, 1999!; Organisation de coopération et de développement économiques [OCDE], 2005). Induction programs are considered one of the best ways to alleviate the problem (Karsenti et Collin, 2009). Indeed, many researchers proposed this solution to overcome beginning teacher attrition (Borman et Dowling, 2008!; Colbert et Wolf, 1992!; Comité syndical européen de l’Éducation [CSEE], 2008!; Howe, 2006!; Martineau, 2006!; OCDE, 2005!; Sauvé, 2012!; Sénéchal, Boudrias, Brunet et Savoie, 2008!; Shakrani, 2008!; Tardif, 2009). To adequately support beginning teachers, we must first know the nature of their activity, from their training in the university until their entry on the priority list. This case study of three beginning teachers answers precisely this question. The teachers’ experiences, documented by semi-structured interviews, have been analyzed from the perspective of the third generation of activity theory, through a systemic reading of activity systems (Engeström, 2015). Our research shows that these teachers evolve in an activity system marked by contradictions. For instance, beginning teachers do not have full access to professional development tools, even those specifically designed for them. Our research also reveals that peer support plays a key role in teacher retention.

Full textThis research focuses on the evaluation practices of Gabonese primary teachers in connection with teaching practices. The research concerns the summative evaluation knowledge, as part of taking admission decision to a level skill and the passage of the student upper class. The goal of the study is to determine the training needs of teachers, given the current and desired situations of their professional skills in summative evaluation. The different training needs were measured using the following dimensions: perceptions of teachers in relation to their summative assessment practices and the types of training and priorities in summative evaluation. Two instruments of measurementhave been used to collect research data. The questionnaire sent to forty participants, brought together quantitative data. The guides of semi-structured individual interviews were sent to four of these teachers to collect their speeches about their current and desired situations in summative evaluation. The analysis and interpretation of quantitative data were made from the non-graphical approach developed by Nadeau (1984). This first analysis of data allowed finding the frequency of selection of each participant, scores, the average absolute deviation and the needs of the priority index. The treatment of the qualitative data was based on the systemic theory developed by Lapointe (1992) by conducting discourse analysis of the participants by means of coding and verbatim transcripts through the QDA Miner software. The different statistical and interpretative analyzes were then triangulated to measure the extent of the needs expressed by all the participants. The discussion helped to make connexions between the outcome of the research and scientific literature. The quantitative results show that there are four categories of continuing education needs among participants: 17 critical needs, 17 priority needs, 11 low priority needs and 7 non-priority needs. The qualitative analyzes mention that Gabonese public school teachers who participated in the research have a weak current situation in their summative evaluation practices. Their perceptions show that the lack of sufficient skills training (CPA) and the lack of relevance of the tools of this approach are the major causes of the difficulties in summative evaluation. The qualitative results also show that teachers have difficulty in linking teaching practices to summative evaluation practices. To this end, participants expressed a strong desire to benefit from continuing training in order to improve their evaluation practices in particular. After the research, five recommendations with many statements have been made to the Ministry of education of Gabon and its various technical directions, so that the appropriate policies and mechanisms are implemented in the direction of reducing the discrepancy between the current and desired situationsof Gabonese primary school teachers who participated in this studyin the Estuary province, in particular.

Full textThis research explores the modalities of teachers' relation of computing. Through a clinical approach witch articulates social phenomenia and psychical processes, two notions can be distinguished : professional identity and relation of knowledge. A study about social and historical context of computing at primary school ends the first part. In the second part, the review of literature gives the opportunity to articulate relation of computing and Pygmalion and Promethee's myths. How a subject's relation of computing is built in relation to oneself (mirror, origin) and in relation to the others (transitional object, knowledge, communication in the global village) is showed. In the third part, seventeen unstructured interviews with primary school teachers who use or not computers in classroom, are analysed. Several discourses about relation of computing are identified. Firstly, teachers who use computers technologies in their teaching have institutional, innovative or professional discourses, and also a discourse based on desire for institutional acknowledgement. Secondly, teachers who do not use computers have professional or external discourses or professional adolescence's one and also a discourse based on fantasmatic representations. Four common points of view are analysed too : the teachers' discontent, the pupils in need, the relation to book as container or contents of knowledge, and teachers' competition with computers. Endly, the relation of computing is definited and suggestions for preparing teachers to use information and communication technologies are proposed

Full textDrawing on a sociolinguistic perspective, this study examined the code-switching practices of five elementary core ESL teachers (3rd cycle) in French-medium schools in the Québec City area. The study, which involved case studies, focused on five research questions: (1) the amount of French, the L1, used by the ESL teachers, (2) the reasons why the teachers used the L1 in their classes, (3) the teachers’ views concerning the factors that influenced their L1 use, (4) the influence of the teachers’ language choice on students’ language choice, (5) the students’ perceptions of their teachers and their own L1/L2 use. Data were collected over two different periods of observation in the teachers’ classrooms during the 2007-2008 academic year. Four main sources of data were obtained: videotaped recordings of the lessons observed, stimulated recalls, an end-of study interview with each teacher, and a student questionnaire. Amongst the findings, the following are of particular note. First, in contrast to past studies, the present study opted for an emic perspective in which teachers themselves were asked to identify the reasons for which they used the target language based on video clips of their lessons. This fine-grained analysis brought to light a more nuanced analysis notably with respect to certain reasons (e.g., saving time, fatigue) which, even if previously evoked in interviews, could elude inclusion in research etic-based analyses of lessons. Amongst other things, the present study brought to light one reason not previously mentioned in other studies, i.e., the use of time-outs which performed a symbolic boundary maintaining function to preserve the “Englishness” of the ESL classroom. Secondly, the present study extends research which has infrequently reported on individual variation amongst teachers with respect to L1 use within their own lessons. In contrast to past studies, where individual variation within teachers’ lessons has typically been confined to time (Duff & Polio, 1990; Edstrom, 2006; Nagy, 2009a), the present study contributes to those few studies (De la Campa & Nassaji, 2009; Rolin-Ianziti & Brownlie, 2002) which also pinpoint differences in the reasons for such variation amongst case study participants. Thirdly, as in Carless’ (2004) study, one teacher in the present study, Kora, stood out from the others in terms of having a consistently low rate of L1 use (less than 1%), thus thus underscoring his contention that the teacher’s experiences, beliefs and competencies may be a more significant factor in terms of target language use than the students’ level of language proficiency. The case of Kora lends credence to those teachers and researchers who have argued from a pedagogical perspective (Carless, 2004b; Chambers, 1991; Nagy, 2009a; Turnbull, 2006) for the need to enhance teachers’ awareness of the strategies which can be used to increase target language use in the second language classroom. Fourthly, with respect to the impact of the teacher's choice of language on that of the students', the present study extends Liu et al.’s (2004) findings through the analysis of a very different school cultural context involving ESL teaching in the French-medium school system within the province of Quebec. Fifthly, as revealed by the student questionnaire results, despite relatively high levels of English use in their classes, the Cycle 3 elementary grade students did not feel unduly stressed. In contrast to previous studies (Levine, 2003; Macaro & Lee, 2013; Rolin-Ianziti & Varshney, 2009) which have focused on students’ perceptions of teachers’ L1 and L2 use, the present study also examined the latter’s perception of strategy use within their classes. Results reveal that students perceived their teachers as using strategies to a certain degree, particularly in regard to the use of visuals. However, what emerged more strongly was students’ perception of themselves as using strategies to communicate in the target language. Finally, from a methodological point of view, this study appears to be the first to have analyzed percentages for the use of English and French using digital editing features. In past studies, researchers have typically resorted to word counts or timing with a stopwatch, procedures which can be more onerous and time-consuming. Implications for code-switching practices in the classroom as well as suggestions for future research are also discussed.

Full textThe pedagogical counsellor in primary education exercises his duties under the responsibility of the national board of education inspector. As he is deprived of the responsibility for a class he is supposed - in a primary circumscription - to help his colleagues in their professional task (teaching) and to plan and organize pedagogical meetings and post graduation training for them. In the same way he should be faithful to institutional orders and obey his hierarchical superior. Acting on behalf of someone he should play many different parts and feels his own professional identity rather unstable. He only finds his own psychological balance in personal dealings and professional arrangements. His quest for a socioprofessional status reveals the contradictory aspects of his professionality. Example : through he feels he has been deprived of a formative label by the local establishment he admits he is not fully qualified to fulfil such a task. On the other part, despite he can take advantage of a personal and professional protection from his inspector (protection granted by a former co-operation) he complains the teaching staff does not consider him as a fellow companion any longer. In fact he feels mingled into numerous logics : the formal and traditional logic of an inspecting staff board deeply attached to its principle of own territory and the logic of the teaching staff board longing for conformity towards the local authority and its own search for personal and professional credibility. Thus he becomes the architect of an educative, moderate, medium dynamics that stands formal, more usual instead of giving a new impulse

Full textThe problems involved in the passage from games to sports begin to become apparent in the physical education taught in the elementary school. A pupil's age, sex, social class and the extent of his preschooling will all influence his perception of this evolution. At the same time, in physical education, the teacher modifies his method of teaching in relation to that used in the classroom. The teacher leaves aside his more rigorous pedagogical function and becomes more of an activity leader. The learners are more or less sensitive to this role change; the four parameters defined above make certain explanations and interpretations possible

Full textThe official texts sent out by Education Nationale advocate the regular use of art references in the classroom. The reality is sometimes different. Further to our undergraduate, Masters and PhD theses focusing on the educational use of works of art, we intend to study how the selection of reproductions of artwork used in the classroom reveals the process of influence in the teaching act and highlights the implicit or explicit, complementary or antagonistic pressures to which the teacher is subject when deciding whether to show art reproductions in the classroom, and in the selection of these reproductions. We have chosen comparative ethno-education as our framework and used the socio-educational method to analyse the complexity of these co-operative or conflictual relationships, perceived as a global social phenomenon. Seen as a whole, the link established by this discipline both with the individual subject under observation and the collective subject, here made up of the teachers from one Department gives it its depth and originality. An empirical typological analysis enables us to identify eight types of attitudes taken by teachers when confronted by the three parameters they must face. Starting from a comparative analysis of the types identified, we approach the educational fact by studying the deviations between the values of the teachers from each type, those of the parents and those issuing from results and on the means desired or made available. We can then see that, depending on the attitude of each type of teacher, a specific selection of reproductions of works of art is made for the pupils

Full textThis study assesses the effects of an inservice training program on the perceived self-efficacy of first- and second-grade teachers. Fifty-six regular class teachers of the Commission scolaire de la Capitale participated in the study. Using a quasi experimental research design, repeated measures anova (one pretest and two posttest) were performed to evaluate the effects of the training program on the self-efficacy beliefs of the participants. The experimental group took part in training activities focusing on developing their knowledge and skills in managing classroom behaviour problems. The Gestion Positive des Situations de classe (GPS) training took place over an eight-month period at a rate of one three-hour workshop every five weeks. During the training, complementary readings, in-class experiments, and discussions with peers were proposed as support to participants. Results indicate that program participation had positive effect on teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs regarding managing student behavior and eliciting principals’ support. Moreover, an interaction effect is obtained on teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs to elicit principals’support between group and time (pretest and first posttest).

Full textSenegal is a developing country marked by very low budgetary resources and a rapid population growth (42.1% of the population are under 15 years) which indicates that a large primary school-aged population. To deal with this concern, state authorities have decided to recruit contractual teachers that would achieve Universal Primary Education (UPE-SPU). An economic policy implemented since 1995 has now become structural as being the only way to become a teacher at the elementary and secondary level. Therefore, classes teachers who are officials and contractual teachers are presently officiated at present in Senegalese elementary schools and do not benefit from the same recruitment method much less the same training (if any) and are two to three times lower paid. This work focuses on the type of new teachers and more particularly to the understanding of the relationship that binds them to the teaching profession they exercise under specific conditions. Our theoretical framework focus on the determinants of the relationship to work (status, social image, professional identity and the relationship to knowledge) and to study the case of contractual teachers through their job choice of, their academic and professional training and finally their representations of the teaching profession. A qualitative and interpretive research that is done in Mbacke, Diourbel whose particularity is to be Senegalese’s 3rd most populated region after the capital Dakar and Thiès, and yet the least educated in the country with a Gross Access Rate (GTR -TBA) 79.9% when it is near 113.0% nationally. This research is based on a socio historical milestone of the Senegalese education system coupled with an interpretation of semi-structured interviews with a sample of 25 respondents composed of inspectors of education, principals, owners, contractors and parents
