StarLogo TNG (The Next Generation) is a graphical programming environment originally developed by the MIT Scheller Teacher Education Program as a means of improving computer literacy and programming skills in middle and high school students. The original goal of StarLogo TNG was to make computer programming more accessible to students by designing a programming framework, StarLogoBlocks, which could graphically represent the control flow and data structures of a program, and to introduce a "coolness" factor by permitting students to view their program's execution in a 3D game-like environment called SpaceLand. However, after the program was released, the team found that researchers and professionals were using StarLogo TNG for more complex agent-based simulations than it had been originally designed to support. This thesis outlines the design and implementation of a new suite of features, code-named SimLogo, which will improve the simulation capabilities of StarLogo TNG through the addition of true internal parallelism to the virtual machine.

StarLogo TNG is "The Next Generation" in block-based decentralized programming for modeling and simulation software. Its aim is to make computer programming more appealing for students in middle school and high school. Part of the draw of StarLogo TNG is its 3-D rendered world called Spaceland where "agents" live on a terrain made of a grid of "patches". This thesis evaluates and outlines the redesign of Spaceland and its associated terrain editor based on user-task analysis, and discusses the design of new data structures to support the desired features.

StarLogo: The Next Generation aims to introduce students to programming. The StarLogo application is frequently used in a classroom setting, but the effectiveness of StarLogo is limited as long as students cannot interact with each other using the application. This thesis describes the design and implementation of a networked development and runtime environment for StarLogo. Hopefully, students will become more interested in programming when they can collaborate to create and run StarLogo programs. In addition, teachers will have more options available when choosing classroom activities using StarLogo.

StarLogo TNG is a robust graphical programming environment for secondary students. Despite the educational advantages of graphical programming, TNG has sustained criticism from some who object to the exclusion of a textual language. Recognizing the benefits of text processing and the power of controlling software with a keyboard, I sought to incorporate text-processing techniques into TNG's graphical language. The key component of this work is an innovation dubbed "Typeblocking," by which users construct block code through the use of a keyboard.

ZHANG, RUYUAN. "Open Clusters in the TNG Stellar Population Astrophysics large program." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3454572.
Full textContext: Thanks to modern understanding of stellar evolution, we can accurately measure the age of Open Clusters (OCs). Given their position, they are ideal tracers of the Galactic disc. Gaia data release 2, besides providing precise parallaxes, led to the detection of many new clusters, opening a new era for the study of the Galactic disc. However, detailed information on the chemical abundance for OCs is necessary to accurately date them and to efficiently use them to probe the evolution of the disc. Aim: Mapping and exploring the Milky Way structure is the main aim of the Stellar Population Astrophysics (SPA) project. Part of this work involves the use of OCs and the derivation of their precise and accurate chemical composition. We analyze here a sample of OCs located within about 2 kpc from the Sun, with ages from about 50 Myr to a few Gyr. Method: We used HARPS-N at the Telescopio Nazionale Gaileo and collected very high-resolution spectra (R = 115\,000) of 40 red giant/red clump stars in 18 OCs (16 never or scarcely studied plus two comparison clusters). We measured their radial velocities and derived the stellar parameters ($T_{\textrm{eff}}$, log g, v$_{micro}$, and [Fe/H]) based on equivalent width measurement combined with 1D - LTE atmospherical model. Moreover, the abundance of $\alpha$-elements O, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, and the light elements Na and Al, all determined by the equivalent width method. We also measured Li abundance through the synthesis method. Result: We discussed the relationship between metallicity and Galactocentric distance, adding literature data to our results to enlarge the sample and taking also age into account. We discussed the behaviors of lithium, sodium and aluminum in the context of stellar evolution. For Na and Al, we compare our findings with models to investigate their behaviour as a function of mass, suggesting that Na mixing to the surface during the giant phase might start in masses as low as 2\,M$_{\bigodot}$. We study the radial, vertical, and age trends for the measured abundance ratios in a sample combining our results and recent literature for Open Clusters, finding significant (positive) gradients only for [Mg/Fe] and [Ca/Fe] in all cases. Finally, we compare Fe, O and Mg in the combined sample with chemo-dynamical models, finding a good agreement for intermediate-age and old clusters. There is a sharp increase in the abundance ratios measured among very young clusters (age $<$ 300 Myr ), accompanied by a poorer fit with the models for O and Mg. Several possible explanations are explored, including uncertainties in the derived metallicity. We confirm the difficulties in determining parameters for young stars (age $<$ 200 Myr), due to a combination of intrinsic factors (activity, fast rotation, magnetic fields, etc) which atmospheric models can not easily reproduce and which affect the parameters and chemical measurement uncertainty.

This thesis outlines a 10-unit biology curriculum implemented in StarLogo TNG. The curriculum moves through units on ecology, the DNA-protein relationship, and evolution. By combining the three topics, it aims to highlight the similarities among different scales and the relationships between them. In particular, through the curriculum, students can see how small-scale changes in molecular processes can create large-scale changes in entire populations. In addition, the curriculum encourages students to engage in problembased learning, by which they are trained to approach questions creatively and independently.

Full textWe have studied the eniymatic mechanisms involved in the bioconversion of glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) by a filamentous fungus : Phanerochaete chrysosporium and in the GTN metabolization by hepatic cells extract. The following resuits have been pointed out - The fungus degrade GTN in 2-GMN with a rate of 90% and 80% of regioselectivity. EPR spectra made during GTN incubation show the formation of intracellular complexes identified like hemoprotein-NO and protein Fe-S-NO. - The GTN degradation by P. Chrysosporium involved enzymatic systems_ constituted by soluble and membrane activities. The cytosolic activity is constituted by a glutathion-transferase and by an hemoprotein like cytochrome P-450. Hemoproteins seems to be involve in membrane activities and in particular a cytochrome P-450 in microsomal fraction. - Hepatic rat microsomes, induced by phenobarbital, interact with GTN to form a type I spectrum. In presence of NADPH and in anaerobic condition, a spectrum appeared, caracteristic of an interaction cytochrome P-450-NO. These microsomes degrade GTN in di and mononitrated derivatives. Amongst the cytochrome P-450 inducer tested, dexamethasone increases stongly the concentration of cytochrome P-450 involved in the reductive degradation of GTN. This result and the effect of specific inhibitors allow us to involve the IIIA form of cytochrome P-450
Habib, Bachir. "MIMO Channel Hardware Simulator for LTE and 802.11ac Wireless Communication Systems." Thesis, Rennes, INSA, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013ISAR0023.
Full textTo evaluate the performance of the emerging mobile and wireless communication systems, a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) channel hardware simulator is designed and implemented using the recent communication standards. It provides the processing speed required to the real-time performance evaluation and allows comparing various systems in the same test conditions. The objectives of this work mainly concern the MIMO channel models and the digital block architecture of the hardware simulator. The hardware simulator can be configured with Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) 802.11ac signals. It uses standard channel models, as 3GPP LTE and TGn IEEE 802.11n. It also allows replaying measurement results obtained with the MIMO channel sounder designed and realized at our laboratory. In fact, data obtained during measurement campaigns onboard a ship and for outdoor-to-indoor environments were used. The measured impulse responses are pre-processed in order to make them compatible with LTE or 802.11ac signals. Moreover, timevarying channel models are obtained using Kronecker model with Rayleigh fading. The simulator must be able to reproduce different types of environment. In this context, many scenarios considering realistic people movements have been proposed. They involve movements in outdoor, indoor, outdoor-to-indoor or heterogeneous environments. An algorithm is proposed and described to switch between the environments in a continuous manner. Heterogeneous wireless communication systems are also considered. These systems provide service through a cellular network using LTE standard and are able to maintain the service when switching to a WLAN 802.11ac, for example. Two architectures for the digital block of the hardware simulator are proposed. The first operates in the frequency domain using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT/IFFT) modules. A new improved frequency architecture that works for streaming mode input signals is proposed. The second operates in time domain using Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters. The architectures of the digital block of the hardware simulator are implemented on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) Virtex-IV from Xilinx. Their occupation on the FPGA, the accuracy of the output signals and their latency are analyzed and compared. Moreover, a new algorithm, based on an Auto-Scale Factor (ASF), is added for the time domain architecture. This algorithm improves the precision of the output signals

Full textHumanity has always dreamed about a better world. These dreams has manifested themselves in the vision of Utopia - the good place, but also the non-existing place. Up until World War II man still wrote optimistic descriptions of this ideal world, and spread the idea through literature. In the aftermath of the atomic bomb and under the influence of the cold war, these publications seized to surface in literary surroundings. Despite this utopia did not die - it has only changed. Today you can find utopia, not primarily in books, but in Science Fiction. TV’s biggest Science Fiction-series, Star Trek, is perhaps the best example of this. The Master's thesis "Utopia Trek - a travel through Star Trek with the concept of utopia" takes you through the history of utopia and into its new habitat, Star Trek, where the essence of a utopia for the 21th century is found, discussed and reevaluated.

Abstract: The construction of pipelines for matter transportation, mainly in the Oil & Gas industry, has shown constant growth, causing significant economics and productive impacts on the country's development. In this kind of building, the determining factors for best yields are welding stages, in relevance, the root pass. Currently, manual welding with Stick Welding or TIG are still prevalent, but this scene is changing as automated equipment and procedures are developed. Among these technologies, mechanized orbital TIG welding has emerged as a good solution for the root pass and filling passes, especially for the welding of special alloys. However, Brazil still does not have the manufacturing technology of these equipments, nor are methodologies and knowhow for welding procedures for these applications. In order to contribute to the scientific and technological development, this paper covers the two aforementioned shortcomings. First, the optimization of orbital system (head and welding source) from improvements in AVC (Arc Voltage Control), power source program, mechanical devices, weldhead, etc., enabling the prototype equipment for orbital operations. The second part concerns the welding tests. These were carried out on beveled joints of low alloy steel pipes with 406.4 mm (16 ") in diameter and 12.7 mm wall (1/2"). The study covers from the manufacturing stages of the specimens to the specification of a 360° root pass procedure. Questions regarding the bead geometry in the different welding positions, wire feeding technique, discontinuities, bevel geometry, among other factors were analyzed. For this purpose, some devices have been used such as camcorder, data acquisition system and software for image editing and 3D modeling. The results showed the reliability of the equipment, technical and operational knowhow of orbital TIG welding.

Abstract : Regarding welding processes, human ability to detect errors and correct them enables manual process execution. On the other hand, productivity is no longer compatible to new world requirements. The development of welding equipments with higher automation level and less operator dependence have been crucial for continuous improvement of productivity. A different scenario is found in Brazil. Its industry has high labor costs due to low productivity, which rarely reaches international levels. In the welding field, productivity have been accomplished in countries with high industrial development. They have raised output per worker through two basic principles: equipments and new techniques combined with welding procedures. Because of this, the main objective of this work is to develop techniques for orbital TIG welding focused on productivity increase in the oil and gas sector. The work covers procedure specifications as well as equipment upgrade, using a TIG process with dynamic wire feeding. In this case, there is an automatic feeding that mimics welder operation, with a forward and backward movement near 1 Hz. We developed a new model of wire feeder, able to synchronize wire movement with current pulse. In the characterization phase, comparative tests were executed between continuous and dynamic wire feeding, with thermal gradient evaluation as a function of oscillation frequency. Then, orbital welding tests were performed in pipe sections of ASTM-A139 Grade D, with 16? diameter (406,4 mm) and 15 mm thickness. Productivity increase of root pass was emphasized through ?U? geometry bevel and ?nose? thickness of 3 mm, greater the usual one of 2 mm. The results show that penetration was reached over 180°, with average welding speed of 27,8 cm/min, better than 10 cm/min from TIG process with continuous feeding, and similar to MIG/MAG, which average value is 29,5 cm/min. Average weld dimension (fusion zone height) was 4,5 mm, also greater than other processes (2,9 mm from MIG/MAG and 2,8 mm from continuous feeding TIG). The balance between feed speed and power is not required for process stability, and allowed less material deposition to favor penetration. The above outcomes showed considerable potential from productivity perspective. However, we noted that some joints did not satisfy all requirements prescribed in international standards repetitively. Inoverhead position (8h, 7h e 6h), there were some discontinuities such as concavity and undercut. Therefore, taking into account the great orbital welding potential to increase productivity, is convenient to start process upgrade through new research projects to overcome present limitations.

Full textTNF acts directly on the pineal gland by inhibiting the biosynthesis of melatonin. Similarly, LPS, a potent activator of the innate immune response has an inhibitory effect on the production of melatonin and its precursor. The suppression of nocturnal melatonin synthesis is admitted to allow the full mounting of the inflammatory response both during the day and night. Data from our laboratory have shown that the NFKB is constitutively expressed in the pineal gland and that the daily rate of translocation can be determinant for the onset of melatonin synthesis. Inhibition of their activation potentiates melatonin synthesis whereas factors that promote its activation classically inhibit this production. In this dissertation we find the molecules involved in recognition and signaling of this cytokine in the pineal. We demonstrated that the pineal is responsive to TNF, the pineal glial cells and secretory cells, the pinealocytes, constitutively express the TNF-R1. TNF promotes nuclear translocation of p50/RelA and p50/p50 NFKB dimers in the pineal glands in culture. We confirmed the activation of this pathway in pinealocytes by analyzing the inhibitory protein IKB. We have seen that the activation of this factor is essential for iNOS expression and NO production induced by TNF in isolated pinealocytes. Furthermore we show that TNF promotes the reduction of the expression of TNF-R1 receptor on the membrane of pinealocytes. In summary, we show here that the pineal is instrumented to respond to TNF and that the pinealocytes are direct targets for its recognition. We confirm the relevance of NFKB in the pineal response in situations of injury extending the concept that the pineal is able to detect molecules in the inflammatory process and respond accordingly.

Full textThis report describes how we made a dynamic website combined with statical
web pages and a web shop for the Swedish company Tyger & Ting.
The employer Tyger & Ting wish to run a working web shop on their site but
they want to keep their old system of updating pages with their old application
from Intellyweb1, which creates statical HTML pages.
The goal of this exam paper has been to learn to create a functional web shop
with user friendly layout and appealing design and also to take orders and
fulfill wishes from a real employer.
The report is describing how Intellyweb’s application and its statical web pages
has been implemented on a dynamic web page. The report does also describe
how this site has been build and how the problems with the coding have been
solved. The coding has been made with HTML, PHP and MySQL. CSS has
also been used. The report will describe how management and storage of data
in databases has been handled.
Apart from the demands the employer has given us, a complete revamp of
Tyger & Ting’s design has been made and the result of the exam paper is now a
complete and working web site with additional web shop that supports static
web pages. The website contains 20 dynamic and static pages coded in about
1900 rows of PHP and HTML. A database with five tables of varying size has
been made to contain pictures and information about products, users and
orders.
As soon as all the products has been put into the database the web shop will be
found here: http://www.tygeroting.com
