Abstract:
Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) was born in the village of Röcken, in Prussian Saxony, the son and grandson of Lutheran ministers. He studied theology and classical philosophy at the University of Bonn, but in 1865 he gave up theology and went to Leipzig. Then he discovered the composer Richard Wagner and the philosophers Schopenhauer and F. A. Lange (author of History of Materialism and Critique of its Present Significance, 1866). He won a prize for an essay on Diogenes Laertius, the biographer of ancient Greek philosophers, and was appointed associate professor of classical philology at Basel, when he was only twenty-four. He became a full professor the following year. His principle writings between then and 1879, when illness made him resign from the university, were The Birth of Tragedy (1872) and Human, All Too Human (1878). After his resignation his principal writings were Daybreak (1881), The Gay Science (1882), Thus Spoke Zarathustra (Parts 1 and 2 published 1883, Part 3 published 1884, Part 4 issued privately 1885, published 1892), Beyond Good and Evil (1886), On the Genealogy of Morals (1887), The Wagner Case (1888) and Twilight of the Idols (1888). Nietzsche became insane in January 1889, and vegetated until his death in 1900. His madness was probably tertiary syphilis, which he may have contracted while ministering to sick soldiers in 1870 as a medical orderly in the Franco-Prussian war.

Abstract The generic synonyms of Taumacera Thunberg, 1814 are revised. Acroxena Baly, 1879; Kinabalua Mohamedsaid, 1997; Neochrolea Jacoby, 1887; Paraenidea Laboissière, 1933 and Xenarthra Baly, 1861 are proposed as new synonyms of Taumacera. Luperomorphella Chûjô, 1964 is removed from the synonymy with Taumacera and proposed as a new synonym of Cerophysa Chevrolat, 1836. The name Hyphaenia tibialis Medvedev & Romantsov, 2013 is fixed by the act of the first reviewer principle. Based on the structure of antennae, seven species-groups are recognized (the antennata-group, the cervicornis-group, the deusta-group, the insignis-group, the nasuta-group, the nigricornis-group, and the viridis-group). Lectotypes are designated for Platyxantha balyi Jacoby, 1895 and Dorydea indica Jacoby, 1889, which is important since each of their syntype series consists of two different species

Abstract Although traditionally associated with the ascendance of National Romanticism, Slavic folklore, and the Neo-Russian style in painting, architecture, and the decorative arts, the Abramtsevo artistic circle was also privy to the inception and production of a number of manifestly Orientalist works, such as Vasilii Polenov’s Christ and the Adulteress (1888), Mikhail Vrubel’s ceramic sculptures of The Assyrian, The Egyptian Girl, The Pharaoh, and The Libyan Lion (1890s), and the costumes and set designs for the theatrical productions Judith (1878, 1898), Joseph (1880, 1881, 1887, 1889), The Black Turban (1884, 1887, 1889), King Saul (1890), and To the Caucasus (1891). In addition, a series of hybrid works that fused elements of the exotic with national thematic and stylistic content, such as Viktor Vasnetsov’s Underwater Kingdom (1884) and Mikhail Vrubel’s Princess Volkhova (1898), were likewise produced under the auspices of Savva Mamontov and the Abramtsevo community, thus blurring the boundaries between native and foreign, local and global, self and other, and Slavophilia and Orientalia. The present article posits that an understanding of the romanticized, Neo-Russian artistic and theatrical productions, and the nationalist polemics of the Abramtsevo artistic circle is necessarily incomplete without a detailed examination of the various Orientalist crosscurrents which informed and structured many of the group’s artworks throughout the 1880s and 1890s—a narrative that has been largely left out of scholarly accounts of the movement.

Abstract. This paper presents the first extensive reconstruction of precipitation variability in the Lesser Antilles using historical documentary sources. Over 13 250 items of documentation pertaining to Antigua from the period 1769–1890 were consulted, including missionary, plantation and governmental papers as well as contemporary scholarly publications. Based on the predominant meteorological conditions observed throughout the island, each "rain-year" (December–November) was assigned one of five classifications (very wet, wet, "normal", dry and very dry). Local weather references relating to seven plantations in central-eastern Antigua were grouped according to dry (December–April) and wet seasons (May–November), each of which were also categorised in the aforementioned manner. Results comprise individual island-wide and central-eastern Antiguan chronologies of relative precipitation levels, spanning the rain-years 1769–1770 to 1889–1890 and 1769–1770 to 1853–1854 respectively. The former is compared with available instrumental data for 1870–1890. Significant dry phases are identified in the rain-years 1775–1780, 1788–1791, 1820–1822, 1834–1837, 1844–1845, 1859–1860, 1862–1864, 1870–1874 and 1881–1882, while wet episodes were 1771–1774, 1833–1834, 1837–1838, 1841–1844, 1845–1846 and 1878–1881. Evidence for major wet and dry spells is presented and findings evaluated within wider historical and palaeoclimatic contexts.

During the Campos Basin Deep Sea Environmental Project coordinated by CENPES/PETROBRAS two collecting campaigns were performed. Both used the N/RB Astrogaroupa and fishery nets to collect samples from the continental slope in Campos Basin, RJ (21º48'S to 22º48'S). Campaign Oceanprof I occurred in February, 2003 and collected 18 samples at depths between 1074 and 1649 m. Oceanprof II occurred in August, 2003 and collected 22 samples at depths between 1059 and 1640 m. A total of 14 caridean species were collected: Parapontophilus sp. (Crangonidae); Glyphocrangon longirostris (Smith, 1882) (Glyphocrangonidae); Lebbeus sp. (Hippolytidae); Nematocarcinus ensifer (Smith, 1882) (Nematocarcinidae); Acanthephyra eximia Smith, 1884; A. quadrispinosa Kemp, 1939; A. stylorostratis (Bate, 1888); Janicella spinicauda (A. Milne Edwards, 1883); Meningodora vesca (Smith, 1887); Notostomus elegans A. Milne Edwards, 1881; Oplophorus spinosus (Brullé, 1839); and Systellaspis debilis (A. Milne Edwards, 1881) (Oplophoridae); Heterocarpus inopinatus Tavares, 1999 and Plesionika sp. (Pandalidae). Three out of these 14 species, Parapontophilus sp., Lebbeus sp. and Plesionika sp. are still under investigation and were not included in the present study. From the 11 species identified Nematocarcinus ensifer is a new record for the Brazilian continental slope.

Abstract:
The genus Nebrioporus Régimbart, 1906 is reviewed and partially revised. The historical subgeneric divisions have not been subscribed to here because they fail to reflect the natural grouping within the genus. Instead, Nebrioporus has been divided into eight species-groups recognised and described with character analysis and keys for their identification. The N. laeviventris-group, comprising 4 subgroups and 13 species, has been revised. The N. depressus-group, the most speciose within the genus, is redefined and dealt with in detail with keys for the identification of the species and morphological illustrations accompanying the taxonomic discussion for selected species. The N. sansii-group, as here defined, is also keyed and illustrated and the species N. lynesi (J. Balfour-Browne, 1947) is revised and inserted into this group. Revisional notes are provided also for the following species: Nebrioporus canariensis (Bedel, 1881), N. capensis (Omer-Cooper, 1953), N. dubius (Aubé, 1838b), N. kiliani (Peyerimhoff, 1929), N. kilimandjarensis (Régimbart, 1906), N. seriatus (Sharp, 1882), N. simplicipes (Sharp, 1884), N. solivagus (Omer-Cooper, 1965), N. vagrans (Omer-Cooper, 1953). All revised species are provided with a short redescription, illustration of diagnostic characters and distributional analysis. For several species new distributional records are given. Illustrations of habitus and male characters are provided also for species not discussed in the text. A comprehensive checklist of the genus Nebrioporus is given, with synonyms. Two new species are described: N. amicorum sp.n. from Crete and N. sagartus sp.n. from Iran, both belonging to the N. laeviventris-group, the former described from material previously determined as Nebrioporus stearinus (Kolenati, 1854). Nebrioporus seriatus (Sharp, 1882) is found to be a member of the abyssinicus-group and inserted into previous identification keys. Nebrioporus suavis (Sharp, 1882) is here considered as a western subspecies of N. stearinus (new status as Nebrioporus stearinus suavis (Sharp)). New synonyms: Zimmermannius Guignot, 1941 = Nebrioporus Régimbart, 1906; Hydroporus walkeri Branden, 1885 = Hydroporus crotchi Preudhomme de Borre, 1871; Hydroporus variegatus Aubé, 1838a = Hydroporus stearinus Kolenati, 1845; Deronectes turca Seidlitz, 1887 = Hydroporus stearinus Kolenati, 1845; Potamonectes sulphuricola Zaitzev, 1951 = Hydroporus airumlus Kolenati, 1845. Abstract:
We report 22 parasitoid species from Greece that have emerged from their hosts belonging to Blattodea, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera, including 12 Braconidae, one Eulophidae, one Evaniidae, seven Ichneumonidae, and one Tachinidae. Nine parasitoids are reported for the first time in Greece, i.e., three Ichneumonidae:Campoplexdifformis(Gmelin, 1790),Gelisalbipalpus(Thomson, 1884), andLysibiatenaxTownes, 1983; five Braconidae:CharmoncruentatusHaliday, 1833,Dendrosoterprotuberans(Nees, 1834),Dolichogenidealongipalpis(Reinhard, 1880),Ecphylussilesiacus(Ratzeburg, 1848), andSpathiuscurvicaudisRatzeburg, 1844; and one Eulophidae:Melittobiaacasta(Walker, 1839). Nine of the 23 recorded parasitoid-host associations are new. These findings are discussed in relation to the overall related parasitoid-host associations in the target area, as well as the potential of parasitoid use in the biological control of pests.

Paralelamente ao trabalho de retomada das fontes primárias e das condições de produção literária na imprensa periódica, esta pesquisa propõe um questionamento das duas correntes básicas da fortuna crítica machadiana, que sustentam as teses de que a trajetória criativa de Machado de Assis se define por uma “ruptura radical” ou por um “amadurecimento progressivo” entre as fases de produção. Partindo dessa problematização, pretende-se redefinir as perspectivas de análise de modo a tornar possível a percepção da complexidade do percurso do escritor e dos delineamentos criativos de sua ficção, que evidenciam um movimento alternado entre experimentação, aprimoramento, repetição, descontinuidade e legitimação de soluções temáticas, procedimentos formais e orientações estéticas. Com base na constituição versátil e multiforme assumida pela sua colaboração nesses dois periódicos, propõe-se averiguar a tese de que a criação machadiana se configura a partir das especificidades materiais e das demandas disponíveis em cada contexto (livro, revista e jornal), orientando-se por um transitar simultâneo do autor entre as esferas do passatempo e da artisticidade, do prosaísmo e da complexidade, da reiteração de fórmulas testadas e do esboço de proposições inovadoras

Abstract:
Charles Frederick Ulrich (1858-1908) is best-known today for his paintings of figures at work, exhibited in New York between 1882 and 1884. By portraying both males and females at their work tables, Ulrich was showing middle-class individuals occupied with tasks informed by both knowledge and culture. This thesis describes these works as a way of exploring the artist's New York career, especially in regards to such current issues as immigration, labor, and social awareness. Charles F. Ulrich left no diaries, journals, or sketches to aid in the investigation of his artwork and life. While no verbal clues exist, this study reveals how Ulrich's work is filled with visual signs that invite interpretation. Not surprisingly, since he was raised in a household of German immigrant parents and spent several years of artistic training in Munich, Ulrich's pictures manifest, above all else, the strength of his German heritage.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka Godtemplarlogen 109 Kalmars roll i demokratiseringsprocessen. För att genomföra detta har en huvudfrågeställning formulerats: Kan den verksamhet som Godtemplarlogen 109 bedrev mellan 1882-84 sägas ha varit bidragande till demokratiseringsprocessen vid denna tid? För att operationalisera denna har tre specifika frågeställningar formulerats: 1. Kan en demokratisk ideologi beläggas i logen? 2. Har logen fungerat som en läroplats för politisk kompetens för sina medlemmar? 3. Har logen varit politiskt neutral? Dessa har valts med utgångspunkt från Lauri Karvonens teorier om frivilliga organisationers roll i demokratisering. Logen gav sannolikt sina medlemmar viktiga erfarenheter av politisk kompetens som alldeles säkert hade stor betydelse i andra former av organisering. Logen var dock inte själv drivande i demokratiseringsprocessen, utan tog starkt ställning för en konservativ samhällssyn. Något ideologiskt ställningstagande för demokrati fanns inte, logen präglades snarare av stor ojämlikhet.

This thesis situates the emergence of German imperialist theory and praxis during the nineteenth century within the context of the ascendancy of German liberalism. It also contends that imperialism was an integral part of a liberal sense of German national identity. It is divided into an introduction, four parts and a set of conclusions. The introduction is a methodological and theoretical orientation. It offers an historiographical overview and places the thesis within the broader historiographical context. It also discusses the utility of post-colonial theory and various theories of nationalism and nation-building. Part One examines the emergence of expansionism within liberal circles prior to and during the period of 1848/ 49. It examines the consolidation of expansionist theory and political practice, particularly as exemplified in the Frankfurt National Assembly and the works of Friedrich List. Part Two examines the persistence of imperialist theorising and praxis in the post-revolutionary era. It scrutinises the role of liberal associations, civil society, the press and the private sector in maintaining expansionist energies up until the 1884 decision to establish state-protected colonies. Part Three focuses on the cultural transmission of imperialist values through the sciences, media and fiction. In examines in particular the role of geographical journals and societies and of the periodical Die Gartenlaube. Part Four discusses the post World War I era, and examines liberal attempts to revive German imperialism, within the context of a refusal to accept the Versailles settlement. It also delineates points of convergence and divergence between Nazi and liberal imperialisms. This is followed by a summation of the evidence and arguments, in which it is concluded that the liberal narration of German national identity was predicated both on the objectification of colonised lands and attempts to emulate and ultimately rival British imperial power.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the experiences of the inhabitants of St. Vincent during the first fifty years of freedom. It examines social changes, work opportunities and areas of conflicts that developed during the period. It also details the effects of the declining economy on the islanders. The main subjects of the thesis are the agricultural labourers who were freed from slavery. It investigates their working lives, their attempts to achieve independent status as freeholders and their family and religious experiences. It also examines the changing attitudes towards them that were held by the planter class, the clergy and colonial officials, and how these views influenced the formation of a free society. In particular, the thesis investigates how perspectives of race, class and gender differed within the island, and how these divergencies created hostilities between different social groups often leading to unrest. While the main focus of the thesis is St. Vincent, it also compares conditions in St. Vincent with other Caribbean islands and Britain. This has helped illustrate how some local conditions, such as the lack of available land, ineffective plantation management and economic factors, reduced the opportunities for the freed people of St. Vincent. However, it also illustrates a commonality of experiences among the poor in both the Caribbean and Britain. It illustrates how the lives of the poor in the Caribbean were often restricted by the same class and gender biases experienced in Britain, as well as by racial prejudices held by the ruling authorities. The thesis relies on a variety of source material. Most of the primary sources were official Colonial Office dispatches, newspapers and Wesleyan missionary letters and reports. Throughout the thesis, I have questioned the motivations of the writers of these documents and interpreted the discourses they employed. I have also attempted to place the findings of my research within current debates among Caribbean historians of the postemancipation period to illustrate the importance of further gender analysis and research.

This chapter begins by exploring Roosevelt’s four years at Harvard College. The death of his father in 1878 prompted extended religious musings and the clearest evidence of youthful evangelical faith. Roosevelt married Alice Lee in 1880 and launched his political career in 1881. As a state assemblyman, Roosevelt advocated for reforms in economic and social life. The tragic death of Alice Lee and Martha Roosevelt on the same day in 1884 drove Roosevelt to the Dakota Badlands, where he became a rancher. In these years Roosevelt said much less about personal faith, a marked contrast from his upbringing. The chapter ends with his engagement to Edith Carow in 1886.

O foco do estudo incidiu sobre as interrupções ou continuidades das atividades artísticas no período estudado, tão atípico, em função do necessário isolamento social, e sobre as possíveis consequências para suas carreiras individuais. Neste sentido, o trabalho discute as desigualdades sociais e de gênero, sublinhando a importância do “ateliê como refúgio” e como lugar de segurança em períodos de crise sanitária.

Abstract:
O tema central dessa comunicação é a análise da produção do escultor brasileiro Rodolfo Bernardelli (1852–1931) na Itália, no final do século XIX, enfocando especialmente a realização do grupo monumental em mármore Cristo e a mulher adúltera (1881-1884). Apesar da importância de Rodolfo Bernardelli no cenário artístico brasileiro, a sua trajetória ainda não foi estudada por completo. Percebendo a ausência de estudos nessa área, enfocamos o período de sua formação em nossa pesquisa de mestrado, concluída em 2005. O artista, que freqüentou a Academia Imperial de Belas Artes, na década de 1870, estudou em Roma por vários anos, onde também criou algumas de suas obras mais conhecidas. Na Itália, o jovem escultor foi aluno de Giulio Monteverde e manteve contato com a obra de destacados artistas como Vincenzo Gemito, Achille d’Orsi e Michetti. Em 1885, ele regressou ao Rio de Janeiro e expôs, em mostra individual, os trabalhos realizados no exterior, obtendo grande repercussão na imprensa e crítica cariocas e também na Academia. O seu grupo escultórico Cristo e a Mulher Adúltera, apresentado nessa mostra, tanto pelo tema como por sua ousada execução formal, revela o diálogo com a escultura italiana contemporânea. É esse aspecto da produção de Bernardelli, presente também em outras obras suas desse período, que faz com que o artista seja prestigiado em seu retorno da Europa e indica novas direções para a escultura no Brasil, no final do Segundo Reinado.

Abstract Development of alternative carbonaceous sources for energy production is essential to alleviate the dependence on depleting fossil fuels which led to increasing atmospheric CO2 and thus global warming. While biomass utilization for energy and chemical production has been extensively studied in the literature, such studies on municipal solid wastes is difficult to interpret due to the heterogeneous nature of the waste. Understanding of the influence of individual components is necessary for comprehensive development of waste-to-energy pathway. One such waste that is complicated and has often been ignored in the literature is composite polymer absorbent material waste which can also be considered as a potential feedstock for thermochemical pathway of energy production. Composite polymer absorbent materials are ubiquitously used these days in the form of sanitary napkins, diapers, water blockers, fire blockers and surgical pads due to their high water-absorptive nature. Pyrolysis and CO2 gasification is ideal for such materials due to its versatile feedstock intake and uniform product output in the form of syngas with adjustable composition. CO2 gasification also provides the added benefit of CO2 utilization which provides carbon offset to this process. In the present study, a mixture of cellulose, absorbent material (sodium polyacrylate), polypropylene and polystyrene in a fixed proportion, to model approximate composition of a diaper, was examined for its pyrolysis and CO2 gasification capability for viable syngas production. The influence of individual components into the syngas yield from the composite waste gasification was also investigated. A fixed-bed, semi-batch reactor facility along with gas chromatography was employed to analyse the syngas yield and compositional evolution. Pyrolysis was done under nitrogen atmosphere and gasification was done under CO2 atmosphere. CO2 gasification provided net CO2 consumption which means a net reduction in carbon emissions per joule of energy produced. The sample was tested under four isothermal conditions of 973, 1073, and 1173 K to understand the impact of operational conditions on the syngas yield. Influence of individual component of the composite absorbent waste on the syngas yield and composition was also analyzed by comparing these syngas characteristics with that of the yield from gasification of its individual components separately at 1173 K. These investigations provided us with novel results on the behavior and capabilities of these composite polymer absorbent wastes and which opens up a new avenue towards efficient utilization of solid waste resources for sustainable energy production in the form of syngas which can also be used for various chemicals production such as methanol, gasoline and other petrochemical products.

The paper describes a first attempt to produce a complete system of calculations that cover the entire range of assessments required in the Life Assessment method R5 based on a new programming method, the Linear Matching Method, and using shakedown and related concepts. We show that two solutions types are possible, the first assuming a constant residual stress field that provides shakedown and related limits. The second method involves the evaluation of the amplitude of the changing residual stress field. This provides the first stage for the ratchet limit and the amplitude of plastic strain. By adaptation the elastic follow-up factor corresponding to creep dwell periods may also be evaluated.

Tämä tutkimus käsittelee kansainvälisen polaarivuoden 1932–1933 aikana toimineen Petsamon magneettisen observatorion havaintotuloksia. Mukana on lyhyt katsaus polaarivuoden aikana ja sen jälkeen uudella suomalaisella meteorologisella radiosondilla tehdyistä kokeista 1930-luvun lopulla. Näitä kahta aihepiiriä yhdistää FM Mauri Tommila (1905–1971), joka toimi Petsamon observatorion johtajana ja joka sen jälkeen osallistui merkittävällä panoksella yhdessä Vilho Väisälän kanssa radiosondin kehittelyyn 1934–1939. Sondi valmistui operatiivisen sääpalvelun käyttöön vuonna 1936. Väisälän sondia testattiin vuosina 1937 ja 1939 Huippuvuorilla ja Atlantilla. Molemmissa retkikunnissa Tommila oli mukana. Petsamon observatorio oli yksi Suomen geofysikaalisen tiedeyhteisön kontribuutioista polaarivuoden tutkimus- ja havainto-ohjelmiin. Sen päätehtävä oli rekisteröidä maan magneettikentän vaihteluja jatkuvasti toimivilla laitteilla ajan havaintokäytäntöjen mukaisesti. Päävastuu observatorion toiminnoista oli Suomalaisella Tiedeakatemialla ja sen Sodankylän observatoriolla. Tarvittavat rekisteröintilaitteet oli hankittu Tanskan meteorologiselta laitokselta ja ne edustivat aikansa mittausteknologista huippua. Observatorio oli myös Ilmatieteen laitoksen tärkeä havainto- ja koeasema polaarivuoden ohjelmassa. Polaarivuoden havainto-ohjelman ja laiterakennuksien suunnittelun olivat tehneet Sodankylän magneettisen observatorion johtaja Eyvind Sucksdorff (1899–1955) ja Ilmatieteen laitoksen johtaja Jaakko Keränen (1883–1979). Keränen oli Sodankylän magneettisen observatorion ensimmäinen johtaja 1913–1917 (Nevanlinna, 2014). Petsamon observatorio sijaitsi lähellä Pohjoisen jäämeren rannikkoa Petsamojoen suistossa. Petsamo on nykyään Venäjän hallinnoimaa aluetta. Petsamon magneettinen observatorio oli toiminnassa 13 kuukautta 1.8.1932–31.8.1933 välisen ajan. Rekisteröintitulokset tieteelliseen käyttöön muodostuivat alan käytännön mukaisista magneettikentän eri komponenttien tuntikeskiarvoista. Mauri Tommila julkaisi tulokset taulukkojen muodossa yhdessä tarvittavien metadatatietojen kanssa kansainväliseen tutkimuskäyttöön (Tommila, 1937a). Tässä julkaisussa on yhteenveto tehdyistä magneettikentän mittauksista. Vertailu Sodankylässä tehtyihin samanaikaisiin rekisteröintituloksiin osoittavat, että Petsamon observatorion rekisteröintitulokset ovat olleet korkeatasoisia ja että julkaistu aineisto on tieteellisiin analyyseihin käyttökelpoista. Kaikki Suomen vanhat historialliset magneettiset rekisteröintiaineistot ovat nyt digitoitu Petsamon aineiston valmistuttua. Vanhin niistä on Helsingin magneettisen observatorion havainnot 1844–1910. Petsamon observatorioon rinnastuu Sodankylän magneettiseen ja meteorologiseen observatorioon polaarivuodelta 1882– 1883. Myös sen magneettiset ja meteorologiset havainnot uudelleen julkaisu ja digitoitu (Nevanlinna, 2017a).
