Kocaer, Sibel. "The journey of an Ottoman warrior dervish : the Hızırname (Book of Khidr) sources and reception." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2015. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/20392/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines a work of considerable significance for early Anatolian Turkish literature and Ottoman history, the Divan-ı Şeyh Muhyiddin (880/1476), written by Şeyh Mehmed Çelebi (d. 898/1493-4) who was a sheikh at the Zeyni dervish lodge in Egirdir. In scholarship the work is known as the Hızırname (Book of Khidr), although this was not the title given by the author himself. The text narrates the travels of a warrior dervish figure in the heavenly realm and to various territories on Earth under the guidance or the spiritual blessing (himmet) of Khidr. Another important figure of Ottoman sufism, Hacı Bektaş, also plays a prominent role in some sections of the narrative, especially as he appoints the dervish the head of the Ottoman army. The dervish defeats the enemy in a battle on the Eastern borders of the Ottoman Empire. Even though the Hızırname has been presented as unique in Turkish literature in terms of genre and content, not much attention has been paid to its particular characteristics. This thesis reassesses this claim in the light of recent scholarship and identifies the main strands of a wide range of textual references to other sources. Amongst the peculiar features of the Hızırname that this study focuses on and examines are two intertwined aspects of the text - the identity of the narrator, who is the protagonist himself, and variations in the route of the journey. The ascension (miraj) journey of the dervish figure, accompanied by Khidr, and the narration of this journey by the first-person narrator, distinguish the Hızırname from similar Anatolian Turkish works. This study proposes that these special features of the Hızırname relate the text to Ishraqi literature, and to the writings of Ibn 'Arabi and his followers in Anatolia. Hacı Bektaş on the other hand, having a political role in the Hızırname, links this text to the frontier literature of the warriors. Having been written in Egirdir, a frontier Muslim border zone between the Ottomans and the Karamanids, and in the vicinity of Konya, the Hızırname combines the literature of both frontier regions and dervish lodges within one text, as represented by the warrior dervish, namely 'eren', identity of the poet.

Whitehouse, Ruth Margaret. "The representation of ethnic minorities in twentieth century Turkish fiction." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2001. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/28521/.

Full text
Abstract:
During the first half of the twentieth century, the ethnically segmented Ottoman empire was transformed into a nation state of Turkish citizens. This thesis explores and evaluates the representation of ethnic minorities in Turkish fiction against a background of demographic, political, and social change. Within this context, novels and short stories of selected writers have been studied with a view to determining differences of experience, perception and attitude. The writers include: Huseyin Rahmi Gurpmar, Halide Edip Adivar, Resat Nuri Guntekin, Halikamas Balikcisi, Orhan Kemal, Haldun Taner, Sait Faik, and Yasar Kemal. The thesis comprises an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. The Introduction gives a brief overview of historical events relating to demographic changes and ethnic minority status, and looks at the popular perception of minorities in the Ottoman performance arts. Chapter One is a study of literature written before, during, and after the Balkan wars, the First World War, and the Turkish War of Liberation. Chapter Two continues with a study of literature published during the years leading up to multi-party democracy. Chapter Three traces the emergence of an Anatolian literary perspective in which, with a few exceptions, ethnic issues were generally ignored or suppressed, and observes the gradual re-emergence of ethnic identity in Turkish literature. The conclusion evaluates the extent to which the selected authors; a) reflect the changing ethnic composition of Turkish society during the last century; b) display signs of bias or prejudice in their representations of ethnic minority characters; c) use ethnic minorities as a device to further or enhance the literary quality of their work.

Messo, George. "Translating Turkish poetry." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2014. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/49740/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis demonstrates how the development of my work as a translator implicitly challenges some of the principal values and assumptions inscribed in the works of my predecessors. I identify what these values and assumptions are in the process of translating poetry from Turkish to English, and why they present particular problems. Throughout, I show how these problems can be reconceptualised, re-examined, and overcome. In section 2 I contextualise my work in the field of literary translation from Turkish to English during the period 1900 to 2012. I sub-divide this period of translation activity into three distinct phases and further justify this sub-division by contextualising these phases in relation to changing attitudes and tastes toward Turkish poetry, particularly in light of increased availability of financial support for translators and increased opportunities to publish literary works in translation. In section 3 I focus on translations of İlhan Berk to demonstrate differences in practice that distinguish my work from the work of my contemporaries. I further extend this comparative analysis of translation strategies in section 4 where I examine the dominant values and constraints influencing choice in the reading and re-making of Turkish poems in English. Finally, in section 5, I shift perspective to provide a descriptive commentary of critical reactions to some of my translation work.

Abstract:
Because I am a specialist on Cypriot literature, in particular Turkish- Cypriot literature, this has direct implications for the study of Turkish and Greek language literatures, as well as European minor literatures (as defined by Deleuze and Guattari: 1994). Due to the positionality of the Turkish and Greek literary traditions vis-a-vis European literary establishments, and that of Cypriot literature within the Turkish and Greek literary canons, I have studied literary polysystems theory (especially Even-Zohar: 1978 and 1979) and the relations between central and peripheral literatures. One of the central contributions of my work and research is to study the Turkish and Greek languages and literary traditions in the context and framework of 'contact languages' (Weinreich: 1953), in other words, as linguistic-cultural forms which have developed under co-habitation and mutual influence. I also studied 'othering, processes in Greek, Turkish, Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot literary traditions within the broader context of orientalism and Eurocentricism in the system of European literatures. My work has brought to the fore the plurality of traditions within the domain of Turkish literature as well as the ancient and ongoing multilingual literary traditions of Cyprus. On the one hand, it enabled the study of different traditions within the same linguistic domain (Turkish) to be studied through different categories, such as Turkish literature and Turkish-Cypriot literature. On the other hand, it also allowed for the study of different language literatures under the same roof, such as the Greek, Turkish, and English language literatures of Cyprus as Cypriot literature.

Denby, A. "The English and classical substance of Babits' novels." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2005. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1444622/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates Mihaly Babits's increasingly original utilisation of English and classical literature in his five novels. It also interprets the relevance of its findings. Intertextuality originating in English works is traceable in Babits's first novel, A golyakalifa (1916) and in his second novel, Kartyavar (1915-1923). Babits's A golyakalifa has roots in Virgil's Eclogues , Coleridge's and Wordsworth's verse. It imitates Edgar Allan Poe's, Robert Louis Stevenson's and Oscar Wilde's doppelganger fiction. The sources of intertextuality in Kartyavar are Virgil's Aeneid and Charles Dickens's Hard Times and Bleak House. Carlyle's, Macaulay's and J. S. Mill's ideas form a basis of Kartyavar's philosophy. Babits drew on Dickens in the way he created his characters in Kartyavar . Babits's third novel, Timar Virgil fia (1919-1922) incorporates certain themes of Shakespeare's plays as well. It is a hypertext of The Aeneid, and transposes themes and moods from Keats's, Wordsworth's and Tennyson's verse. It has many intertexts such as quotations from Virgil and St. Augustine. Babits's fourth novel, Halalfiai (1927) and his last novel, Elza pilota (1918-1933) are more original hypertexts of their exemplars. Halalfiai has roots in George Eliot's and George Meredith's novels. It has intertextual episodes which are adaptations of Meredith's The Egoist. Halalfiai is also an architectural hypertext of particular works by Fielding, Smollett, and Goldsmith. Elza pilota (1933) reads as a metatext of some of its sources, such as Thomas More's Utopia and Bacon's New Atlantis , but is principally an ingenious hypertext of Swift's Gulliver's Travels, Poe's as well as H. G. Wells's works. It creates its own innovative narrative and story.

Abstract:
The main objectives that guided this study were to investigate the treatment given to the environmental problems by that newspaper, the prioritized themes covered in the articles and, therefore, to lead to a discussion about the possibilities of its contribution to the environmental education of the people that lives in its area of coverage. The quantitative and qualitative studies evaluated the matters presented in the website of the newspaper, specifically in the regional section, in a total of 312 editions&#894; from this, it was resulted 359 texts classified as Informative Journalism category, of which was selected 113 texts as report genre, objects of this study. The material selected to the analysis was the report genre because it should present the information in an extended, contextualized and detailed configuration. The results of the research show that the reports are, in its majority, guided by events not forecasted (factual events), informing the society about the main environmental problems of today but in a fragmented and poorly contextualized form. One of the conclusions of this study is that the reports prepared on the basis of scientific studies are those that have greatest potential to contribute to the construction of an environmental conscience. This conclusion leads to a reflection in two different points of the journalistic productions: the importance of creating a fixed section related to regional environmental questions in this newspaper and, at the same time, the need for greater dissemination of scientific studies by the researchers of this area in the regional press.

Proctor, Nancy E. "American women sculptors in Rome in the mid-nineteenth century : feminist and psychoanalytic readings of a displaced canon." Thesis, University of Leeds, 1998. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/894/.

Full text
Abstract:
Henry James's phrase, `white, marmorean flock', has become the defining image for the American women sculptors who worked in Rome in the midnineteenth century at the height of neoclassicism, subsuming their works and histories under the connotations of its words. Instead of simply permitting us to name these sculptors, `white, marmorean flock' raises both a problem of historiography, as a study of the exclusion of the women sculptors from questionable canons, and, more importantly, a problematic of the feminine and subjectivity in the context of artistic Symbolic activity. Nathaniel Hawthorne's 1860 novel about expatriate artists in Rome, The Marble Faun, is a primary site for the excavation of the foundations of our contemporary understanding of the American women sculptors in Rome in the mid-nineteenth century. Conflated with the objects of her creative production in a `Pygmalion effect', the woman sculptor is figured in Hawthorne's novel as a limit, embodying an impossible (for phallic cultural discourses) coincidence of femininity and creativity. Read through a matrixial lens, sculptures by Edmonia Lewis intrude uncannily in these canonical narratives of the nineteenth century, as the woman sculptor of colour in the studio destabilises and unfixes gender, race, and class identities. Here too the Sadean `nothingness' of the neoclassical sculpture emerges as a limit in our understanding of nineteenth century modes of seeing -a limit which is perhaps best approached `through the defiles of the signifier', photography. For although the flat, white, ideologically-laden surfaces of American history sculpture are now articulated by the spaces of the modernist white cube gallery, the woman sculptor remains a `strange and estranged' stain on the screen of American art, `rather out of place in the picture'. By focussing on the margins of American art history, this study deploys the anamorphic effect in an attempt to `hallow the hollow and to hollow the hallow': to move towards reading the works and histories of the American women sculptors who worked in Rome in the mid-nineteenth century in a symbolic register in which white is also black, and sculptors are also women.

Lestrelin, Guillaume. "Changing lives, changing nature(s) : socio-environmental transitions in the uplands of the Lao PDR." Thesis, Durham University, 2009. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/894/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study debates the socio-political construction of the land degradation issue in the Lao PDR, the consequences of this construction for policy interventions in the uplands, and the social and environmental outcomes of these interventions. For that purpose, livelihood analysis is integrated into the theoretical framework of political ecology. The study adopts a ‘hybrid’ and locally-grounded approach that integrates methods from the social and ecological sciences and investigates recent livelihood and environmental change in two upland villages in northern Laos. From there, the analysis draws a number of causal links between local socio-environmental change, local ‘theories’ on land degradation, the wider political economy and the politics of the ‘environment’ at the national level, and various local contingencies (i.e. social differentiation, sociocultural change and everyday resistance to ‘external’ interventions). The study argues that the current mainstream environmental discourse in Laos appears less based on solid empirical evidence than shaped by the subjectivities and political-economic projects of the state, the political elite and their international development partners. In turn, policy interventions supported by this discourse have significant impacts on upland livelihoods and environments. Importantly, they contribute to make traditional upland agriculture unsustainable and, hence, drive a general trajectory of livelihood diversification and deagrarianisation. Nevertheless and notwithstanding significant constraints linked to land degradation and wide-ranging state regulations, upland-dwellers retain a non-negligible level of agency which allows them to pursue their own, sometimes contested, economic and political objectives. Multi-local social networks and ‘village-local state’ alliances appear to play a key role in facilitating this process. These findings have important implications for the conceptualization of society-nature, global-local and state-society relations. They highlight a need to shift from simple dualistic models to more integrated perspectives accounting for the co-construction of society and nature, the co-production of global and local change, and the interpenetration of the state and society.

Bear, Daniel. "Adapting, acting out, or standing firm : understanding the place of drugs in the policing of a London borough." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2013. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/894/.

Full text
Abstract:
The number of police recorded incidents in England and Wales involving cannabis more than doubled between 2004 and 2009 even though use of the drug was in decline and official policy was geared towards tackling drugs ‘that cause most harm’(Home Office 2008). Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork carried out in a single London borough during the 12 months leading up to the 2011 riots, this research examines the place of drugs within everyday policing, focusing on the working lives of street-level police officers who are not attached to specialist drug squads. The concept of bifurcation (Garland 1996, 2001) is used to make sense of, ”a series of policies that appear deeply conflicted, even schizoid, in their relation to one another” (Garland 2001, pg. 110). Analysis of the ethnographic data shows how the ‘structured ambivalence’ of state responses is evident in relation to front-line policing, including the policing of drugs. We find that the backbone of modern policing, Response Teams, are being pulled towards a ‘classic’ style of policing where officers ‘act out’ and impose order through the visible exercise of their powers, reasserting the authority of the state. This is a far cry from officers in Safer Neighbourhood Teams who work predominantly on Community Policing efforts, adapting their working styles, engaging with community partners, and focusing on ‘damage limitation’ efforts. The thesis charts these different orientations in relation to officers’ general activities, before going onto show how they are visible in the way each team approaches drugs policing. From here it will be argued that the increase in recorded incidents involving drugs reflects the influence of New Public Managerialism and the focus on output-based targets. These performance targets were easily fulfilled by targeting low-level drugs offences, and once met, officers were free to police as they saw fit. Instead of officers evolving their practices as the organisation evolved, NPM allowed officers to stand firm and maintain their culture, policing practice, and sense of mission. The author accompanied both Response Teams and Safer Neighbourhood Teams of the Metropolitan Police Service during their shifts, and also conducted 23 interviews with officers. This research also developed new digital ethnography methods that might be utilised by ethnographers in other disciplines.

Maxia, Alessandro. "Isolated electrical microgrids employing renewable energy resources:analysis of the electrification of remote communities in Peru." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2010. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/894/.

Full text
Abstract:
This project points out a brief overview of several concepts, as Renewable Energy Resources, Distributed Energy Resources, Distributed Generation, and describes the general architecture of an electrical microgrid, isolated or connected to the Medium Voltage Network. Moreover, the project focuses on a project carried out by GRECDH Department in collaboration with CITCEA Department, both belonging to Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya: it concerns isolated microgrids employing renewable energy resources in two communities in northern Peru. Several solutions found using optimization software regarding different generation systems (wind and photovoltaic) and different energy demand scenarios are commented and analyzed from an electrical point of view. Furthermore, there are some proposals to improve microgrid performances, in particular to increase voltage values for each load connected to the microgrid. The extra costs required by the proposed solutions are calculated and their effect on the total microgrid cost are taken into account; finally there are some considerations about the impact the project has on population and on people's daily life.

De, Paz Daniele <1974&gt. "Progettare l'ospitalità: turismi e turisti della città contemporanea." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2008. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/894/.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this study is the identification of instruments capable of controlling the quality of a specific planning process that can meet the strong tourism demands of a territory. It starts from the simplest theories framing a constant condition of man: TRAVEL. The study considers its first priority to be the definition of a “dimension” in which people travel, where the physical concept of living space has shifted in the same way, and as much, as people move. There is a sort of “macro-place” (destination) that comprises all the places where people arrive, and from where they often depart again. Thinking of the architecture of hospitality means studying and understanding how the home is no longer the only place where people live. The study bases its argument on the importance of the “places” belonging to a territory and how they must take back, through a planning path, their natural vocation as attractions. Just as a form of architecture for “staying” is developed, a form of architecture for moving around is also manifested, and these architectures mix together and integrate into a territory that, by its very nature, is itself an attraction. The terminological origin of the term “nomadism” is a necessary step for understanding a new architectural dimension connected with concepts such as mobility and living. An examination is thus made of “diasporic” literature, in which the first configurations connected with temporariness and “mobile” constructions appear. In brief, after having positioned and classified the tourist phenomenon as a new form of living, without which it would not be possible to make a complete territorial plan since it has by now become a crucial element, the study proceeds with the identification of a context meant as an instrument for studying the relationships among the various tourist categories and “types”. The “Riviera Romagnola” is certainly very famous for its hospitality and for its impressive tourist infrastructure, but at the industrial level it is no less famous for the harbour of Ravenna, which is a logistical point of reference for the sea trade of cargo and raw materials, as well as being an example of excellence in its entirety. The province of Ravenna combines all the factors needed to create the Total Leisure Experience during vacations. What emerges from the considerations made on the territory of Ravenna is that the modern tourist no longer seeks a monothematic vacation, to be spent solely on the beach or devoted exclusively to visiting monuments and cultural attractions. The demand is for an enjoyment provided by a number of different elements. We are thinking of a tourist district where the offering, in addition to the beach or the cultural itineraries, also offers the opportunity for practicing sports or fitness activities, for relaxing in peaceful places, for tasting or buying typical local foods and, at the same time, for enjoying the same services that a person can enjoy in his or her own home. The path, aiming to define a method for planning hospitality, starts from the acquisition of the national and international experiences which have taken place over the past ten years. The so-called “type” research phase has ended with a critical evaluation that highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the experiences examined. The conclusion of this exploration has produced a first draft of the “conceptual objectives” connected with the development of an architectural model. The specific research project focuses on the path marked out by the Fiumi Uniti (United Rivers) in Ravenna. This decision makes it possible to consider a parameter that shows factors of continuity between coast and city, between seaside resort tourism and cultural tourism, therefore considered as a potential instrument for connection between situations that are often homologous or complementary, in view of a tourism implementation that the research project numbers among its first objectives. The hospitality architecture theme – which in this case is implemented through the idea of experimenting with the “DIFFUSE HOTEL” model, a horizontal, multi-building hotel structure – offers the best possibility to highlight the specific form of the local culture. The planning proposal is structured as a consequential and organic study capable of promoting an original reflection on the theme of the “living” module in places near territorial structures of particular interest, around which the growing flow of users of extremely varied types highlights the need for singular nodes that can provide for numerous different uses in contexts of great value and interest.

Karpf, Anne. "The persistence of the oral : on the enduring importance of the human voice." Thesis, London Metropolitan University, 2016. http://repository.londonmet.ac.uk/894/.

Full text
Abstract:
The submission, comprising nine outputs, ranges from journal articles and a book to a podcast and a radio programme. The accompanying commentary aims to contextualise the submitted work, demonstrate that it constitutes a coherent whole and that it makes a significant, original contribution to the field of cultural studies. The submission and commentary contest the idea that the voice has become less important than text and image in an era that has come to be known as one of 'secondary orality'. The outputs set out to demonstrate that, although metaphorical and narrative meanings of 'voice' have come to displace a sense of the audible voice in popular discourse as well as in many scholarly texts, it remains a prime and powerful modality in both human communication and new technologies. Applying the approach of psycho-social studies to the voice in a novel and original way, the outputs draw on semi-structured interviews, archive research and cultural analysis to argue that, despite the discursive absence of the audible voice, a study of vocality can enrich our understanding of both face-to-face and electronically-mediated communication. The commentary describes the phenomenological orientation of the outputs. Using the interdisciplinary approach of psycho-social studies to explore aspects of the cultural sphere, the submission is thus situated in the emerging strand of psycho-cultural studies: the commentary argues that, despite the methodological problems this throws up, it constitutes a valuable and apt addition to the study of voice. It suggests that gendered ideas of the voice may lead to an essentialism that can be countered by understanding the voice as a medium for the performativity of gender. Challenging the common polarisation of eye and ear and the idealisation of the voice, it traces some ways in which the voice is culturally-constituted, especially the radio and cinematic voice. The appendix documents not only the outputs' origins but also their wide impact.

Aziz, Salman. "An investigation into the post impact and post indentation behavior of auxetic composites." Thesis, University of Bolton, 2016. http://ubir.bolton.ac.uk/894/.

Full text
Abstract:
Composites have been extensively used in high performance structural applications due their lightweight and better strength to weight ratio. A common defect in angle ply laminates is caused by the low velocity impacts, due to their poor resistance to accidental impact by foreign objects, and also the defect is barely visible. Actually contact zone between the target and the penetrating object is relatively large and the whole structure is affected even well away from the impact point. This type of interaction can generate large delaminations, which can reduce the strength under compressive loading. At present, allowance for the delamination induced strength reduction is given by maintaining the strain limits to the structures that prevent the failure due to delamination. If any damage is found in the structure, it is not easy to repair due to the larger damage area. Carbon auxetic composites can be considered as good candidate materials with special properties required for today’s modern technology. This thesis presents the study of auxetic laminates and their response to low velocity multiple impact events in order to assess the damage behaviour of the laminates. These materials are of great interest because the damage area created is smaller, which does not affect the whole structure as compared to the conventional carbon laminates. As received unidirectional 12k tow fibre reinforced, high performance (IM7/8552), epoxy resin pre-preg, which one of the stiffest fibre matrix systems, was used to prepare 24-layers auxetic and positive Poisson’s ratio laminates. This work focuses on four stacking sequences; all through-thickness auxetic and positive Poisson’s ratio laminates were prepared with [±30]s and [35/-20/25/40/-85/40/25/-45/35/-15/25/40] s angles, respectively. Stacking angles for the in-plane auxetic and positive Poisson’s ratio laminates were designed as [0/15/75/15]s and [0/-70/10/25]s respectively. These laminates were cured by vacuum bagging technique before testing in order to achieve the highest quality specimens. All the tests presented in this work are conducted on 100mm2 squared size specimens, by using a standard 12.7mm steel hemisphere indentor. In this work multiple indentation and impact tests were conducted both at the initial test site and also away from the initial test site to determine the extent of damage zone. The most important conclusions and findings drawn from the experimental results are as follows. From the low velocity multiple impacts, indentation testing, fractography, residual testing and dynamic analysis it can be concluded that through-thickness auxetic laminates are found to be better than the positive Poisson’s ratio laminates, even though they were tested 20mm away from the vicinity of the initial test site. Their confined damage area can prevent the structure from catastrophic failure because the damage is more concentrated at the test site and is easy to repair due to the smaller damage area. A preliminary study into the high velocity impact on the through-thickness laminates and the low velocity impacts on the in-plane laminates was also carried out in order to study their impact response. Here, auxetic and the positive Poisson’s ratio laminates show almost similar damage response to the high velocity impacts. However, auxetic in-plane laminates were found to have better resistant to an impact event as compared to the positive Poisson’s ratio specimens.

Jessa, Munira. "Visual Sensitivity of Dynamic Graphical Displays." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/894.

Full text
Abstract:
Advanced display design, such as Ecological Interface Design (EID), makes extensive use of complex graphical objects. Research has shown that by following EID methodologies, supervisory operators have better performance with the EID displays (Pawlak and Vicente, 1996). However, past research does not consider the visual aspects of the graphical objects used in EID. Of particular interest is how different design decisions of graphical objects affect the performance of the objects used within that design. This thesis examines the visual sensitivity of dynamic graphical objects by examining features that make certain graphical objects visually superior for certain monitoring tasks. Previous research into the visual aspects of supervisory control with respect to emergent features, psychophysics and attention were considered in the investigation of the visual sensitivities of the dynamic graphical objects used. Research into static graphical objects, combined with prior work on emergent features has been merged to find emergent features that best show changes in dynamic graphical objects for the monitoring tasks investigated. It was found that for simple dynamic objects such as bars and polygon objects, a line changing in angle was the most noticeable emergent feature to show a departure from ?normal? state. For complex graphical objects, those target-indicator displays that mimic a ?bull?s eye? when at the target value should be used for displays that show observers when a target value has been reached. Abrupt changes in shape should be used in trend meters to show when variables or processes have changed direction. Finally, ?solid objects? that make use of vertical lines and shading should be used for comparison meters that compare two values and keep them in a particular ratio. These findings provide guidance for designers of dynamic advanced graphical displays by encouraging the consideration of visual aspects of graphical objects, as well as prescribing graphical objects that should be used in the types of tasks investigated.

Abstract:
Parent ratings of their children play a significant role in the assessment process. However, past research on rating scales has focused largely on teacher ratings. Less frequent studies on parent rating scales have predominant!}' used mothers' ratings and omitted fathers' ratings. In addition, research comparing parent ratings have produced inconsistent results when describing effects of gender of the child and rater. In this study, parents of 35 three to five-year-old preschoolers rated their child on the Temperament Assessment Battery for Children: Parent Form (T AB-R) and the Conners Parent Rating Scales-48 (CPRS-48). Adequate reliability for mothers and father ratings were found on all but one factor (Psychosomatic factor on the CPRS-48). Results suggest significant moderate correlations between parent ratings across gender of the child. When analyzed separately for gender of the child, there were stronger correlations and a greater number of significant correlations for ratings of sons than for ratings of daughters. A series of 2 x 2 ANOVAs (gender of child x rater) for each factor of the TAB-R and the CPRS-48 yielded a significant main effect for gender of the child on the Activity factor (TAB-R) and on the Learning Problems, Anxiety and Hyperactivity Index factors (CPRS-48). No significant differences as a function of the rater were found. Results are discussed and recommendations for further study are noted.

Abstract:
A deep interest in how relationships, specifically romantic partnerships, cope with and survive tragedies, guides this research. My research question was: What are the narratives of intact bereaved couples whose children have died after receiving palliative care for a life-limiting illness? Five couples were interviewed who had lost their children ranging in age from 1-14 years of age. This loss occurred between 2 to 9 years previous to this study. The purpose of this narrative research study was to better understand the ways in which intact marital partners/couples coped together with the stress and grief involved in having a child with a life-limiting condition and then having that child die after receiving palliative care. A secondary aim was to bring forth their voices through their narratives as a means to address the stigmatization and isolation often experienced by those who are bereaved, especially those who have lost a child. This project informs professionals who are working with couples undergoing the struggle of a child's critical illness or who are working with bereaved couples. Each couple's narrative account was written in story format. In addition to the rich information gained from reading the holistic stories, 5 themes emerged through a categorical content analysis which were: 1) the last thing you worry about are issues about us, 2) accommodating one another's coping, 3) recognizing sources of support and limitations, 4) two souls against the world, and 5) we have a common bond : lessons and legacy of the child.

Abstract:
Master of Music<br>The use of error by composers as a means of adding colour to a musical text has a long history, but the device is ultimately ineffective. Material whose significance is its incongruity is incorporated by recontextualization, and in time, becomes familiar and unremarkable. ‘Glitch’ is a stylistic mannerism within electroacoustic composition that emerged in the late 1990s. Glitch, or ‘microsound’, as it is known in an academic context, observes the conventions of music concrète, drawing on material sampled from the real world, and fashioning this into sonic narratives. Its signature is the ‘sound of failure’, sonorities characteristic of electronic devices malfunctioning or mis-used: clicks, crackles, distortions, fractured digital files. Glitch/microsound has already diminished from a movement to a mannerism, but its legacy is a refreshment of our palette of sonorities, and an interrogation of the very act of listening. This essay is short examination of the use (and nature) of noise a musical ingredient and the significance of glitch/microsound for electroacoustic composers. It concludes that this ‘style’ is little more than a nuance, and that its advent and advocacy were less to do with a new musical movement, than with a new generation of electronic composers attempting to distinguish itself.

Abstract:
Dothistromin (DOTH) is a secondary metabolite produced by the fungal peanut pathogen Passalora arachidicola and pine needle pathogen Dothistroma septosporum. The chemical structure of DOTH is similar to a precursor of aflatoxin (AF) and sterigmatocystin (ST), which are secondary metabolites produced by Aspergillus species. A size fractionated genomic library was made and 11 putative DOTH genes were identified in P. arachidicola. The DOTH genes in P. arachidicola were compared to DOTH genes in D. septosporum as well as to AF and ST genes in Aspergillus species. The DOTH gene products in P. arachidicola showed 73 - 96% amino acid identity to DOTH genes in D. septosporum and 50 - 69% amino acid identity to AF/ST genes in Aspergillus. The DOTH biosynthesis genes in P. arachidicola had similar gene organization and direction of transcription to DOTH biosynthesis genes in D. septosporum and is similar in that 11 putative DOTH genes are separated into three mini-clusters. This differs from the AF/ST clusters in which 25 AF/ST genes are tightly clustered in a 70 kb region. Identification of transcription factor binding sites upstream of DOTH genes in P. arachidicola and D. septosporum suggested similar co-regulation of DOTH gene expression in P. arachidicola and D. septosporum. Tandem and inverted repeat sequences were identified in intergenic regions in the P. arachidicola DOTH gene cluster, but the distribution of those repeats appears to be random. This suggests that the fragmentation of the DOTH biosynthesis gene cluster is not due to retrotransposon activity or recombination between repeat sequences. The DOTH biosynthesis gene clusters in P. arachidicola and D. septosporum could be ancestral to AF/ST biosynthesis clusters in Aspergillus species.

Patel, Minaxi. "The potential for a novel alcoholic drink prepared from the New Zealand native plant Cordyline australis (ti kōuka)." AUT University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10292/894.

Full text
Abstract:
Some New Zealand indigenous plants may offer unique qualities that can be used to secure an exclusive niche in the alcoholic drinks market in the same way that Scotch whisky and tequila are strongly identified with the country of origin, Scotland and Mexico. Tequila is a spirit distilled from a fermented agave, dry adapted lily. Agave is in the family Agavaceae, a notable New Zealand member of which is the common cabbage tree or ti kōuka (Cordyline australis). Similarly, to the agave having a fermentable core, ti kōuka has carbohydrate (inulin) content in its young stems and roots that can be hydrolysed in acidic suspensions or by enzyme hydrolysis to yield fructose. The main objective of this thesis was to systematically research the feasibility of the production of a tequila-like spirit from ti kōuka stem, profiling the chemical properties of the spirit with a view of future commercial production of an iconic New Zealand spirit. The initial stage of the thesis focused on extracting inulin from the ti kōuka stem and hydrolysing (by both acid and enzyme) it to yield reducing sugar. The sugar concentration yielded was too low (~ 10 to 15%) to be fermented and distilled economically. Rather, the ti kōuka extract was evaporated to produce flavoured products by the Maillard reaction, a reaction between amino acids and sugars. The flavoured compounds were then infused with potable ethanol. In outline, the dried stem was hydrolysed with an inulinase at 60°C for 1 hour. The pH was adjusted to 10 with sodium hydroxide and evaporated at 60°C for 65 hours. The dried extract was reconstituted with water, centrifuged and the supernatant infused with portable ethanol to yield final different concentrations of 80, 67, 57 and 50%. The ethanol treatments simultaneously extracted flavour and colour to varying degrees. Next, sugars and amino acids were analysed in the ti kōuka stems by liquid chromatography. The most abundant sugar present in the ti kōuka after inulinase hydrolysis was fructose and the dominant amino acids were arginine, leucine, lysine, and aspartic acid/aspargine and glutamic acid/glutamine. Amino acids and reducing sugar were also analysed at different stages of the spirit production. The reducing sugar content decreased during each step of the process. The relative concentrations of arginine, leucine and lysine decreased while that of aspartic and glutamic acids increased during the whole process of making the spirit. Model systems were then used to simulate the reactions taking place between the amino acids and reducing sugar present in the ti kōuka extract. The colour of the models became darker as a function of time, accumulating more brown pigment containing the flavoured compounds. Increasing the pH and concentration of the amino acids in the reaction mixture also increased the browning pigment formation. Dichloromethane and n-pentane and diethyl ether solvent extraction of the spirits and analysis of volatiles by gas chromatography- mass spectrometry revealed that the chemical profiles of the spirits were different from those of the commercial spirits, gin, tequila and whisky. Sensory evaluation was performed on four variations of the spirit, and demonstrated that the creations were consumer-acceptable. The costs and other issues involved in producing and marketing such a spirit were identified, the major selling point being geographical exclusivity.

Abstract:
This thesis redefines the Sixth Generation of Chinese film by examining the characteristics of some young directors’ films from the perspective of theme, form and production mode, essentially, from the perspective of the relationship between these directors and their times. I suggest that the most important condition in the construction of the concept of the Sixth Generation and the Sixth Generation film is the ideological rebellion against the government after the events of 1989. I hold the opinion that the Sixth Generation has adopted a more commercial outlook after the end of the 1990s, and explore reasons of this change from the perspectives of economy, culture and individual existence.

Liang, Jing. "Market segmentation and dual-listed stock price premium - an empirical investigation of the Chinese stock market." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/894.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis comprises, firstly, a careful and detailed description of the institutional workings of the Chinese stock market; secondly, a literature review of the Chinese segmented markets and dual-listed shares price premium; and thirdly, three evidence-based contributions designed to cast new light on the Chinese A-shares premium puzzle. Publicly-listed firms in China, under certain criteria, can issue two different types of shares, namely A-shares and B-shares, to local and foreign investors respectively. These shares carry the same rights and obligations, but are however priced differently due to market segmentation. After a review of the literature on determinants of the premium, the first contribution offers a complementary explanation. I propose that the premium reflects the difference in valuation preferences between the local and foreign investors, i.e., local investors pay more attention to stock liquidity, while foreign investors pay more attention to firm’s intrinsic value, and so firms having more favorable fundamentals tend to have lower premia. The second contribution involves the examination of a controversial question that which investor group is better informed about local assets, by testing the direction of information flows between the A- and B-shares markets. Both time series methods, and panel data techniques which are used for the first time in this context, are employed, in order to get a distinct and more insightful picture against the current literature. The third contribution compares and contrasts institutional settings of China, Singapore and Thailand which have similar market segmentation and dual-listing systems; examines whether or not the premia in the three countries are caused by same factors; and tries to answer why foreign investors in China pay less, rather than more, as commonly observed in other segmented markets, for identical assets. It provides the first cross-country comparison evidence after 1999 with updated data.

Abstract:
The availability of ultra high-frequency (UHF) data on transactions has revolutionised data processing and statistical modelling techniques in finance. The unique characteristics of such data, e.g. discrete structure of price change, unequally spaced time intervals and multiple transactions have introduced new theoretical and computational challenges. In this study, we develop a Bayesian framework for modelling integer-valued variables to capture the fundamental properties of price change. We propose the application of the zero inflated Poisson difference (ZPD) distribution for modelling UHF data and assess the effect of covariates on the behaviour of price change. For this purpose, we present two modelling schemes; the first one is based on the analysis of the data after the market closes for the day and is referred to as off-line data processing. In this case, the Bayesian interpretation and analysis are undertaken using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. The second modelling scheme introduces the dynamic ZPD model which is implemented through Sequential Monte Carlo methods (also known as particle filters). This procedure enables us to update our inference from data as new transactions take place and is known as online data processing. We apply our models to a set of FTSE100 index changes. Based on the probability integral transform, modified for the case of integer-valued random variables, we show that our models are capable of explaining well the observed distribution of price change. We then apply the deviance information criterion and introduce its sequential version for the purpose of model comparison for off-line and online modelling, respectively. Moreover, in order to add more flexibility to the tails of the ZPD distribution, we introduce the zero inflated generalised Poisson difference distribution and outline its possible application for modelling UHF data.

Hardman, Stephen David. "It's a living: the post-war redevelopment of the American working class novel." Thesis, University of Canterbury. American Studies, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/894.

Full text
Abstract:
A recurrent premise of post-war criticism is that World War II marked the end of the American working class novel. This thesis challenges this assumption and argues that the working class novel redeveloped throughout the 1940s and 1950s in response to major social, political, economic and cultural changes in the United States. A prime justification for the obituary on the working class novel was that after 1945 the United States no longer had class divisions. However, as the first two chapters of this study point out, such a view was promulgated by influential literary critics and social scientists who, as former Marxists, were keen to distance themselves from class politics. Insisting that the working class novel was hamstrung by a dogmatic Marxist politics and a fealty to social realism, these critics argued that the genre's relevance depended on the outdated politics and conditions of the 1930s. As such they were able to use literary criticism as a means of justifying their own ambiguous politics and deflecting any close scrutiny of their accommodation with the post-war liberal consensus. In a close examination of four writers in the subsequent chapters it is shown that, in fact, working class writers were extremely successful in adapting to post-war conditions. Harvey Swados, in his novel On the Line (1957) and in his journalism, provides crucial insights into the effects of the transition from a Fordist to a post-industrial society on the identity of the industrial worker. In The Dollmaker (1954) Harriette Arnow dramatises an important migration from the rural South to Detroit during World War II which exposes the ways in which American capitalism was able to diffuse a national working class identity. Chester Himes' novel If He Hollers Let Him Go (1945), and his experiences as an African American writer in the 1940s, highlight the intersections between race (and racism) and class in the United States. Hubert Selby, in Last Exit to Brooklyn (1957), undermines the hegemonic ideology of post-war consumerism by drawing attention to the poverty and violence in an urban working class community. All these writers share a common concern with continuing, and re-developing, the dynamic and heterogeneous tradition of American working class cultural production.

Abstract:
This thesis examined the process goal paradox and the conscious processing hypothesis (CPH; Masters, 1992) as an explanation for performance decrements in conditions of high cognitive state anxiety. The aims of the thesis were to: (1) investigate the process goal paradox as a means of examining conscious processing effects, (2) examine the number of part process goals as a method of inducing conscious processing and (3) to make use of an interdisciplinary approach to uncover the mechanisms underlying conscious processing effects. The thesis comprised four empirical studies that adopted a range of methodological approaches including quantitative and qualitative research. Study 1 examined the process goal paradox using a part process goal, a holistic process goal, an external goal and a discovery learning group in a driving simulation task in acquisition and across neutral and competition conditions. Study 2 investigated the process goal paradox using a part process goal, a holistic process goal and an external goal, in novice and expert performers in a basketball free throw task in low and high anxiety conditions. Study 3 examined the impact of using a varying number of part process goals when performing under high and low anxiety conditions in expert tennis players. Overall the findings of studies 1, 2 and 3 supported the use of goals in preventing performance decrements under conditions of high anxiety. No support was found for conscious processing. Subsequently, study 4 aimed to ascertain the causes and mechanisms that contribute to performance failure under pressure. Overall, the results of study 4 suggest that performance decrements under conditions of high anxiety are more suitably explained by attentional based theories such as Processing Efficiency Theory (PET; Eysenck & Calvo, 1992) rather than self focus explanations, such as the CPH.

Kellermann, Johann. "The most important barriers inhibiting the sustainability and growth of energy service companies (ESCOs) in South Africa." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/894.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It has been established worldwide that energy efficiency undertakings are the fastest, most cost-effective and cleanest way to extend energy supplies. When the energy supply made available through energy efficiency projects are compared with increasing primary supply through building new conventional generation facilities, the former is in most cases also safer, more reliable and a more secure form of investment. Energy service companies (ESCOs) are the recognised implementation vehicles of energy efficiency projects and have been in use internationally for many years for this purpose. Globally, however, ESCOs do not have a good history of being viable business enterprises. The most important barriers identified internationally hindering ESCOs’ growth and sustainability were the potential customers’ lack of awareness, information and understanding regarding energy efficiency projects, the financing of these projects, as well as the support of government on energy efficiency policies and regulations. The urgency of implementing energy efficiency measures in South Africa is critical based on the precarious situation of the national electrical suppliers’ ability to provide electricity unfailingly to all its current and future customers. The South African electrical energy situation should therefore provide tremendous opportunities to the local ESCO industry. The aim of this study was therefore to reiterate the importance of energy efficiency projects and to describe the barriers to growth and sustainability experienced by ESCOs in South Africa against the international backdrop. This was done by way of a survey sent out to all registered ESCOs in South Africa. Based on the responses to the survey, the South African industry is in dire straits and is hindered by various barriers to their growth and sustainability. The study identified eight major barriers in the South African ESCO industry which are similar to those experienced by ESCOs internationally. The uniqueness of the local barriers however, is that the industry operates in a highly regulated environment and that these regulators, being the government and Eskom, are recognised as the main perpetrators responsible for most of these barriers, largely due to a lack of dedicated action. Furthermore, the study shows that it is critical for all role players in the South African energy efficiency industry, and specifically the South African government and Eskom, to recognise these barriers and to assist in solving them to improve the growth opportunities in the ESCO industry. Removal of these barriers will not only improve the electricity situation, but will also have a number of positive effects on the micro and macro-economic levels of South Africa, as well as the environment. Finally, the study makes suggestions about the way forward through a number of actions to be taken to lower or remove the most important of these barriers.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Dit is reeds wêreldwyd bevestig dat energie-effektiwiteitsprojekte die vinnigste, kostedoeltreffendste en omgewingsvriendelikste manier is om energiebronne uit te brei.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the influence of various macroeconomic variables on Japan’s merger and acquisition (M&A) activity, both in terms of total deal value and total number of deals. Looking at monthly data from June 1997 to December 2013, I use econometric time-series analysis to find that: First, total deal value per month is not well explained by our macroeconomic variables, but about half of the variation in number of deals per month can be explained by our dataset. Second, the most important determinant in the total number of deals per month during our period is the level of national debt, and interest rates had the opposite effect from what was originally expected. Third, adding lag variables to our analysis proved to be relatively fruitless. Finally, when taking a look at only the past couple of years to determine the effects of “Abenomics” on M&A activity in Japan, I conclude that there is not enough data, and better results would be obtained in the future.

Reese, Garth B. "Use of the Clegg Impact Soil Tester to Access Rutting Susceptiblity of Cement-Treated Base Material Under Early Trafficking." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2007. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/894.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to avoid the occurrence of early-age damage, cement-treated base (CTB) materials must be allowed to cure for a period of time before the pavement can be opened to traffic. Trafficking of a CTB before sufficient strength gain has occurred can lead to marring or rutting of the treated layer. The specific objectives of this research were to examine the correlation between Clegg impact values (CIVs) determined using a heavy Clegg impact soil tester and rut depths measured in newly constructed CTB and subsequently establish a threshold CIV at which rutting should not occur. The experimental work included field testing at several locations along United States Highway 91 near Smithfield, Utah, and laboratory testing at the Brigham Young University (BYU) Highway Materials Laboratory. In both the field and laboratory test programs, ruts were created in CTB layers using a specially manufactured heavy wheeled rutting device (HWRD). In the field, ruts caused by repeated passes of a standard pickup and a water truck were also evaluated. The collected data were analyzed using regression to identify a threshold CIV above which the CTB should not be susceptible to unacceptable rutting. From the collected data, one may conclude that successive wheel passes each cause less incremental rutting than previous passes and that CTB similar to the material tested in this research should experience only negligible rutting at CIVs greater than about 35. The maximum rut depth measured in either field or laboratory rutting tests was less than 0.35 in. in this research, probably due to the high quality limestone base material utilized to construct the CTB. In identifying a recommended threshold CIV at which CTB layers may be opened to early trafficking, researchers proposed a maximum tolerable rut depth of 0.10 in. for this project, which corresponds to a CIV of approximately 25. Because a CIV of 25 is associated with an acceptably minimal rut depth even after 100 passes of the HWRD, is achievable within a reasonable amount of time under normal curing conditions, and is consistent with earlier research, this threshold is recommended as the minimum average value that must be attained by a given CTB construction section before it can be opened to early trafficking. Use of the proposed threshold CIV should then ensure satisfactory performance of the CTB under even heavy construction traffic to the extent that the material properties do not differ greatly from those of the CTB evaluated in this research.

Fogarty, Caitlin E. "Death is Not the End: The Role of Reactive Oxygen Species in Driving Apoptosis-induced Proliferation." eScholarship@UMMS, 2015. https://escholarship.umassmed.edu/gsbs_diss/894.

Full text
Abstract:
Apoptosis-induced proliferation (AiP) is a compensatory mechanism to maintain tissue size and morphology following unexpected cell loss during normal development, and may also be a contributing factor to cancer growth and drug resistance. In apoptotic cells, caspase-initiated signaling cascades lead to the downstream production of mitogenic factors and the proliferation of neighboring surviving cells. In epithelial Drosophila tissues, the Caspase-9 homolog Dronc drives AiP via activation of Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK); however, the specific mechanisms of JNK activation remain unknown. Using a model of sustained AiP that produces a hyperplastic phenotype in Drosophila eye and head tissue, I have found that caspase-induced activation of JNK during AiP depends on extracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by the NADPH oxidase Duox. I found these ROS are produced early in the death-regeneration process by undifferentiated epithelial cells that have initiated the apoptotic cascade. I also found that reduction of these ROS by mis-expression of extracellular catalases was sufficient to reduce the frequency of overgrowth associated with our model of AiP. I further observed that extracellular ROS attract and activate Drosophila macrophages (hemocytes), which may in turn trigger JNK activity in epithelial cells by signaling through the TNF receptor Grindelwald. We propose that signaling back and forth between epithelial cells and hemocytes by extracellular ROS and Grindelwald drives compensatory proliferation within the epithelium, and that in cases of persistent signaling, such as in our sustained model of AiP, hemocytes play a tumor promoting role, driving overgrowth.

Abstract:
This study was designed to assess the differences in the learning performance (speed and accuracy) with which field dependent and field independent subjects could complete a set of checkbook management tasks using software employing a user interface making strong use of common checkbook management metaphors versus software employing an interface adhering to a defacto industry standard-based graphical user interface design guideline. It was hypothesized that both field dependent and field independent users would complete tasks more quickly and accurately using both user interface types. From a population of traditional and non-traditional college students, 64 individuals volunteered to participate in the study. The Group Embedded Figures Test was used to determine field dependence -independence level and four groups of 16 formed for exposure to the 2 interface types in an experimental design. Analysis of variance procedures were used to determine the significance of learning differences between the groups. The results showed significant correlations between experience level and task performance. There were no significant interaction effects between field dependence - independence and exposure to the two interface types on performance. The findings of this study may have implications for designers of application software user interfaces and for those involved in application software training.

Radu, Cosmin. "Study of Magnetization Switching in Coupled Magnetic Nanostructured Systems." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2008. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/894.

Full text
Abstract:
A study of magnetization dynamics experiments in nanostructured materials using the rf susceptibility tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) method is presented along with a extensive theoretical analysis. An original, computer controlled experimental setup that measures the change in susceptibility with the variation in external magnetic field and sample temperature was constructed. The TDO-based experiment design and construction is explained in detail, showing all the elements of originality. This experimental technique has proven reliable for characterizing samples with uncoupled magnetic structure and various magnetic anisotropies like: CrO2 , FeCo/IrMn and Co/SiO2 thin films. The TDO was subsequently used to explore the magnetization switching in coupled magnetic systems, like synthetic antiferromagnet (SAF) structures. Magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM) is an important example of devices where the use of SAF structure is essential. To support the understanding of the SAF magnetic behavior, its configuration and application are reviewed and more details are provided in an appendix. Current problems in increasing the scalability and decreasing the error rate of MRAM devices are closely connected to the switching properties of the SAF structures. Several theoretical studies that were devoted to the understanding of the concepts of SAF critical curve are reviewed. As one can notice, there was no experimental determination of SAF critical curve, due to the difficulties in characterizing a magnetic coupled structure. Depending of the coupling strength between the two ferromagnetic layers, on the SAF critical curve one distinguishes several new features, inexistent in the case of uncoupled systems. Knowing the configuration of the SAF critical curve is of great importance in order to control its switching characteristics. For the first time a method of experimentally recording the critical curve for SAF is proposed in this work. In order to overcome technological limitations, a new way of recording the critical curve by using an additional magnetic bias field was explored.

This work proposes an approach to teaching statistical topics in secondary technical education, taking as reference the procedures adopted by mathematical modeling and inserted in a investigation environment, contextualized and interdisciplinary. An application in the caipira broiler has been proposed, which conducted to the analysis of two regression models to represent the relationship between the variables involved, being: linear model and quadratic model. The evaluation of the models allowed the choice of the most adequate regression, opting for the quadratic model because it presented a higher coefficient of explanation (R-squared). The culmination of the work reflects in the use of the “triple”: planning of actions, insertion of the contents to the reality of the students and in the established association between the several disciplines, as a tendency in the promotion of an effective learning.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Chemical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Cape Town, 2006<br>During recent years, the use of liquid membranes has gained general interest in the treatment of effiuents where solute concentrations are low and large volumes of solutions should be processed, and, if possible, without generating any secondary waste. Liquid membrane processes have been proposed as a clean technology, owing to their characteristics, i.e. high specificity, low energy and utilization. Two liquid membrane processes have been used in metal recovery, which are the liquid surfactant membrane (LSM), which corresponds to double water-in-oil emulsion and solid . supported liquid membranes (SLM), which are made by dispersing or impregnating the extractant within the pores of in.ert solid support. Previously, the recovery of eu (IT) in a SLM system was conducted by other membrane models such as hollow fibre, spiral and flat sheet. Only a small measure of success on scale-up and industrialization of these models has been attained. One of the disadvantages of the hollow fibre system was the small lumen size through which the feed needed to pass. Pores became clogged by suspended particles because the pressure drop over the small diameter augments lower flow rates and therefore, pre-filtering is necessary (Rathore, et al., 2001). In this study the behaviour of a tubular SLM reactor with an inner diameter of the lumen approximately fifty times bigger than that of the hollow fibre are used in order to solve the problem of clogging. This tubular reactor was incorporated in to a bench scale plant and proved successful in copper extraction. By observing transient data, mass transport coefficients were determined and compared to published values.

Abstract:
Fire in Midwestern ecosystems historically has provided many benefits, including promoting forest succession, maintaining wildlife habitat and reducing fuel loads. The Southeastern Illinois Prescribed Burn Association (SIPBA) is the only association of its kind in southern Illinois, designed to reintroduce prescribed fire to landowners in a practical context. The objectives of this research project were: 1) Interview members and crewpersons to collect data on the formation, maintenance, and future of SIPBA, 2) Outline the most common/salient issues driving landowners and stakeholders concerning the use of prescribed fire on their land in southern Illinois, and 3) Provide a conceptual model of the results to serve as a guide for future development of publicly conducted and implemented prescribed burning activities across southern Illinois and, ultimately, the Midwest. This study was implemented by semi-structured interviews of 28 key members of SIPBA. The responses from this population were collected and coded using NVivo 9 qualitative analysis software (NVivo 9 2011). Results indicate that challenges include stubborn remnants of the "Smokey Bear" attitude from the U.S. Forest Service anti-fire campaign, and that liability for an escaped wildfire is a reality for both the individual and for the association. In spite of these and other challenges identified by participants, landowners see SIPBA as a cost-effective solution to their land management needs. The results were interpreted as guidance for future dialogue between landowners and stakeholders and state and federal agencies in implementing prescribed burning programs. Implications include: "fire sells itself." Relatively little effort is needed to attract interest and recruit membership, and the benefits of a prescribed burn are easily evident. Alleviating concerns of the risks associated with fire is a primary objective for the organization, and there is a feeling of "safety in numbers" among membership. Finally, outside funding appears to be the limiting factor for both the capacity and potentially the longevity of the association, meaning that the development of a sustainable funding scheme could allow prescribed burn associations to remain in the Midwest. This case study of SIPBA membership is intended to facilitate cooperation between landowners and local burn associations, and also to serve as a model for the formation of future associations in similar areas of the Midwest.

Abstract:
In this research an approach to all optical delta sigma modulator (ADSM) has been elaborated. Two important components of ADSM; "leaky integrator" and "inverted bi-stable quantizer" were modeled, on the basis of cross gain modulation of the Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA). The simulations (via VPI photonics) were all in micrometer scale (suitable for chip fabrication). By simulating each element of ADSM the whole circuit was simulated and results have been showed and analyzed. By investigating the ADSM, the limiting factor for reaching higher frequencies (THz) was recognized to be the quantization device. Thus a new optical switch was introduced, for the first time so called "proteresis." By applying proteretic bi-stable device in the delta sigma modulator, the resonance frequency was improved minimum two fold from 295MHz to 575MHz without making any change in hysteretic bi-stable switch. The broad impact of this research is on the digital technologies that can be utilized in high-speed signal processing. The prime examples are the RF technologies used in military and civilian applications. Furthermore introduction of proteresis opens a new research gate for compensating delay in almost every system.

Abstract:
In the field of leadership research, the constructive aspects of leadership, such as transformational, authentic, and ethical leadership, have been the predominant areas of focus. Nonetheless, the destructive aspects are gaining attention, with the subject of abusive supervision (AS) receiving more emphasis than toxic, aversive, and tyrannical types of leadership. AS is still in its infancy in terms of its theoretical development and efforts to understand the consequences AS has for working behaviors and how individual cultural dimensions might influence a leader-follower relationship within a work group. Furthermore, most relevant studies have been conducted in the Western context. In this study, conducted in a Chinese cultural context, I investigate the effects of AS on group identity (GI), defined by the group members' value congruency and sense of belonging. I explore their associated organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs), defined by discretionary behaviors beyond the scope of any work contract. OCBs, in the aggregate, reinforce an organization's effectiveness. I further test the moderating effect of the power distance (PD) between AS and GI and approach conflict with supervisors (CWS) in terms of the roles and goals during rounds of conflict, testing the hypothesis that CWS exerts an influence on GI and OCBs. The results from 337 direct reports and 61 of their respective supervisors confirm that AS and GI have a negative causal relationship, and low PD strengthens that relationship. The findings also suggest that GI plays no role in mitigating the relationship between AS and OCBs, and high PD does not facilitate adapting to the hostile behavior of supervisors. This study's theoretical and practical implications are discussed, and future research areas are outlined.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Developments in knowledge of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) in recent years have led to significant advances in diagnostics and prevention of an infectious disease of worldwide distribution that kills half a million people. Portugal is considered a country of intermediate prevalence and has taken measures to control and disease prevention so that their reduction is a reality. Hepatitis B is a notifiable disease and free vaccination has been extended to a larger number of people since1990. Trying to know these variations requires the completion of large-scale studies. In this sense, and in the context of this work, was an analysis of HBV markers in the donor population of the Portuguese Blood Institute (IPS) - Centro Regional de Sangue do Porto (CRSP), in which - we believe - could be a reflects very representative of the prevalence of infection in society, since the blood donors come from different socio-economic, age, gender and demographic regions. The data used in this study correspond to the period from 1 January 2000 to December 31, 2008. We observed a decreasing trend in the prevalence of HBsAg in blood donors of CRSP, 0.14% in the first year of the study and 0.03% in the last year of study. It was found that 89.1% of donors with HBsAg and / or HBV DNA positive were not covered by the national vaccination for HBV.

Tang, Xun. "Diagnosis Of VLSI circuit defects: defects in scan chain and circuit logic." Diss., University of Iowa, 2010. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/894.

Full text
Abstract:
Given a logic circuit that fails a test, diagnosis is the process of narrowing down the possible locations of the defects. Diagnosis to locate defects in VLSI circuits has become very important during the yield ramp up process, especially for 90 nm and below technologies where physical failure analysis machines become less successful due to reduced defect visibility by the smaller feature size and larger leakage currents. Successful defect isolation relies heavily on the guidance from fault diagnosis and will depend even more for the future technologies. To assist a designer or a failure analysis engineer, the diagnosis tool tries to identify the possible locations of the failure effectively and quickly. While many defects reside in the logic part of a chip, defects in scan chains have become more and more common recently as typically 30%-50% logic gates impact the operation of scan chains in a scan design. Logic diagnosis and scan chain diagnosis are the two main fields of diagnosis research. The quality of diagnosis directly impacts the time-to-market and the total product cost. Volume diagnosis with statistical learning is important to discover systematic defects. An accurate diagnosis tool is required to diagnose large numbers of failing devices to aid statistical yield learning. In this work, we propose techniques to improve diagnosis accuracy and resolution, techniques to improve run-time performance. We consider the problem of determining the location of defects in scan chains and logic. We investigate a method to improve the diagnosability of production compressed test patterns for multiple scan chain failures. Then a method to generate special diagnostic patterns for scan chain failures was proposed. The method tries to generate a complete test pattern set to pinpoint the exact faulty scan cell when flush tests tell which scan chain is faulty. Next we studied the problem of diagnosis of multiple faults in the logic of circuits. First we propose a method to diagnose multiple practical physical defects using simple logic fault models. At last we propose a method based on fault-tuple equivalence trees to further improve diagnosis quality.
