Abstract:
Tokulo (Kleinhovia hospita) leaves are commonly used by Moronene people (Southeast Sulawesi) to treat headaches. This is supported scientifically from research which states that tokulo leaves have analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity. The NSAID group is included in the anti-rheumatoid arthritis therapy. To determine the anti-RA activity of this plant, a study was carried out on CFA-induced rats. Based on the results of the study, it is known that the ethanol extract of tokulo leaves has anti-RA and anti-inflammatory activity in CFA-induced rats.

Strawberry ‘Tokun’ (2n = 10x =70) is a unique cultivar with special flavors, but its late maturity hampers its extension. To advance flowering and fruiting of this decaploid strawberry, the effects of short-day combined with extra nitrogen (N) nutrition treatments on strawberry ‘Tokun’ plants were studied. Runner plantlets of strawberry ‘Tokun’ were harvested and rooted in tray plugs in June 2016, 2017, and 2018, and established plants were conditioned with short-day (SD; 10 hours) and extra N nutrition. The conditioned plants were transplanted into a tabletop substrate culture system in a pla

AbstractThe Amami rabbit Pentalagus furnessi is a rare forest-dwelling form endemic to the Amami and Tokuno Islands in Japan. In order to estimate the distribution and abundance of the Amami rabbit we counted their faecal pellets along forest roads and streams as well as within the forests on Amami and Tokuno Islands during January 1993–March 1995. The number of pellets/ km along a stream gave a practical index for measuring relative abundance. The rabbit was estimated to be distributed over about 370 sq km on Amami Island and 33 sq km on Tokuno Island. There was a large variance in faecal abu

Abstract:
Contemporary product designers are increasingly attempting to utilize the latent potential of the product narrative and the impact it can have on the end-user and their relationship with products. Storytelling in product design allows a dialogue and conceptual exchange to be established between products and end-users. This chapter will consider the end-user’s relationship with products and the designer’s role in this emotional and conceptual exchange of storytelling in product design. This will be outlined through a framework defined by the authors as Narrative; Manufacture; History; and Interaction and will consider the work of contemporary designers Philippe Starke, Hella Jongerius, Dick Van Hoff, Ron Arad, Tokujin Yoshioka, Peter Jagt and Frank Tjepkema. The paper will be supported by a main case study of the work of Bernabeifreeman, the award winning industrial design practice of the authors.

Abstract:
In his seminal work on landscape David Cosgrove observed that ‘nature’ as a socio-cultural construct has always functioned as one of the favorite focuses of cultures when humanity is in crisis. Taking this thesis as a theoretical point of departure, this study explores a contemporary art exhibition Sensing Nature: Yoshioka Tokujin, Shinoda Tarō, Kuribayashi Takashi. Rethinking the Japanese Perception of Nature, staged in 2010 at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. The study investigates the strategies used in contemporary exhibiting practices to establish alternative sources of collective identification, and the role of the notion of ‘nature’ in these processes. It explores the recent shift from the perception of the world as the globe into the national terroir as discussed by Bruno Latour and exposed in the conceptual design of Sensing Nature, which returns to the nation-specific notion of “the Japanese perception of nature”. This maneuver demonstrates both the role of art in building social and ecological resilience; and the ambivalent potential of culture in the politics of nature.

Abstract:
In being seated, standing, and walking, many uncontrollable factors contribute to the degradation of our balance system. The maintenance of balance involves many essential sensory (visual, vestibular, and somatosensory) and motor processes. Each sensory input provides unique internal and external reference frame information to the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS interprets the sensory information, from which preplanned and/or preventative (feedforward controls) and corrective (feedback controls) actions can be taken and conflicting sensory information can be mediated (Peterka, 2002). In the absence of a sensory input, balance can still be maintained; however, the compensatory actions become larger and different balance strategies may be employed. Serious problems facing older adults and many people with neurological disorders (e.g., stroke, traumatic head injuries, incomplete spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and osteoarthritis) are balance impairment, mobility restriction, and falling (Gill et al., 2001; Harris, Eng, Marigold, Tokuno, & Louis, 2005). In these cases, even small disturbances may result in a fall and injuries are very likely to occur. This increased risk of falling combined with mobility limitations precipitates patient dependency in instrumental and basic activities of daily living; in turn, this results in reduced levels of physical activity.
