Abstract:
Introduction:An inland earthquake is expected to occur in Tokyo in the near future, and disaster preparedness and response measures have been put in place by the government of Japan and local authorities. Methods:Japan Disaster Medical Assistant Teams (DMATs) conducted two large-scale drills for the first time in preparation for a Tokyo inland earthquake, in collaboration with the following participants: the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, disaster base hospitals in Tokyo, three Staging Care Units (SCUs), and neighboring prefectures. One of the scenarios was a north Tokyo Bay earthquake affecting the Tokyo wards and had 142 Japan DMATs participation. Another scenario was Tama inland earthquake affected mid-west of Tokyo and 110 DMATs participated. The drill included headquarters operation, affected hospital support operation, patient transportation within the area and to the wider region, SCU operation, collaboration with associated organizations, and logistics operation.Results:Post-drill assessments identified the following areas that need to be addressed: review of Japan DMAT implementation strategies; improvement of SCUs; establishment of a patient air transportation framework; securing means of patient transportation; improvement of communication systems; strengthening of disaster response of all hospitals in the Tokyo Metropolis; and preparations for survival in the event of isolation caused by the disaster.

Abstract:
The article presents the calculation of roundabout entry capacity as a case study based on roundabouts located in Tokyo, Japan, and Tokyo surroundings. The analysis was conducted as part of the project entitled “Analysis of the applicability of the author’s method of roundabouts entry capacity calculation developed for the conditions prevailing in Poland to the conditions prevailing at roundabouts in Tokyo (Japan) and in the Tokyo surroundings”. The main aim and the research question was whether the author’s model of roundabouts entry capacity calculation constructed for the conditions prevailing in Poland after calibration is suitable to calculate roundabout entry capacity of roundabouts located in Tokyo and in the Tokyo surroundings. In order to perform the calibration in 2019, measurements were taken at the single-lane roundabouts located in Tokyo and Tokyo surroundings. The model calibration revealed that it is possible to evaluate the entry capacity of roundabouts located in Tokyo and in Tokyo surroundings using the author’s model.

Svensson, Lembke Mattias. "Tokyo intergenerational day care center." Thesis, KTH, Arkitektur, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-122911.

Full text
Abstract:
Japan is facing a great demographic shift, where by 2050 more than 40% of it's inhabitants will be over the age of 65 years. The womens emencipation from the role of stay at home mothers has allowed them to have careers of their own, although a good thing it does not leave a lot of room for starting a family in Japan's hard working climate. This new cultural norm has collided with the the long tradition of family care and Japan is now facing a large cultural collision, where there is a great lack of working solutions for child and senior care. The project suggests a prototypical intergenerational day care center for elderly and children in Tokyos dense now-rise residential neighborhoods. This form of care started being built in America during the 90's and has prooven to provide some of the best care availible for elderly and children.

"Internationalization of Água das Pedras to Tokyo (Japan)." Master's thesis, NSBE - UNL, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/9811.

Full text
Abstract:
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
Água das Pedras is a natural carbonated mineral water exploited and sold by Unicer S.A, a 44% Danish and 56% Portuguese company, the largest beverage company in Portugal1. The market for bottled water in Portugal has been stabilizing in the past years due to its maturity character. At the same time, the expansion of off-trade distribution channels such as supermarkets and large distribution chains associated with the original limited demand for premium waters have been making the market for sparkling water decrease in value. At the moment, exports in Unicer represent 30% of sales and the company had therefore it had decided to focus its internationalization efforts in the beer and water sectors. The most recent internationalization project designed for the brand was its placement in selected cities in Brazil and the US market, under the ‘Projecto Mil Milhões’, aimed at increasing Água das Pedras profit through market expansion. As an alternative to diversify its markets, Tokyo appears as a challenging opportunity that may open a door to the Asian market through Japan. Japan has an interesting dynamics on bottled water and premium beverages, and it is extremely dependent on agri-food imports to maintain the food supply for its population. This WP will clarify Unicer as a consulting report.

Robbins, Jane M. J. "Tokyo calling : Japanese overseas broadcasting 1937-1945." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1998. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14444/.

Full text
Abstract:
Although largely ignored by Western historians, Japanese overseas radio propaganda during World War Two was sophisticated and wide-ranging. Regular overseas radio broadcasting began in Japan in 1935, after several European powers had already begun such services. Following the Japanese occupation of Manchuria in 1931, research into short-wave radio broadcasting was expanded, and after Japan left the League of Nations in 1933, overseas radio was considered essential to present the Japanese government's views abroad. Radio Tokyo broadcasts began in Japanese and English and were initially directed at the United States. Other languages were soon added and the range of broadcasts extended to Europe, South America and the Pacific region. At its height in 1944, Radio Tokyo broadcast to fifteen transmission regions in thirty-three languages. In addition, Japanese-controlled short-wave stations broadcast from fifteen Asian cities under Japanese occupation Themes used in broadcasts varied according to the war situation and the target country. However, certain common themes were used in broadcasts throughout the war, and to most regions. The Japanese analysis of the war situation often formed the central element of news broadcasts, and reconstruction in occupied regions under Japanese administration was frequently emphasised to indicate the benevolence of Japanese rule. Within Asia, independence from colonial rule was advocated, whilst in broadcasts to the enemy the strength of Japanese combat forces was emphasised. Entertainment programmes were developed gradually from 1935. Most such broadcasts were based on Japanese domestic broadcasts and consisted of serious talks, news and some classical music. It was recognised that this was not the format of popular Western broadcasts and several attempts were made to lighten the output of Radio Tokyo. It was allowed to play jazz music, which was banned within Japan, but it was only by using prisoners-of-war in the production of programmes that the Japanese created truly ''Western-style'' broadcasts. This thesis traces the development of Japanese overseas broadcasting from the first experimental broadcasts to the closure of Radio Tokyo by the American occupation forces in 1945. It also analyses the common themes of radio broadcasts in the China Incident and Pacific War and to assess how successful they were as propaganda. The thesis concludes that Japanese overseas radio propaganda was both sophisticated and flexible in its approaches. It showed little resemblance to the propaganda of Nazi Germany, but more to the propaganda of the wartime B.B.C. Many of its broadcasts contained a high degree of "truth," albeit "selective truth," favourable to Japan. The exception was the propaganda issued by the Army and Navy Ministries, which showed little of the sophistication of regular broadcast material.

Thafvelin, Leo. "Förutsättningar för det moderna japanska enfamiljshuset. Projekt: Calahorra, Spanien." Thesis, KTH, Arkitektur, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-143188.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the thesis was to discuss preconditions shaping the modern Japanese single-family dwelling. The typical characteristics of the Tokyo cityscape were crucial for the general development of architecture. Urbanization and weak planning regulations have created unique low-rise districts. The density of the urban fabric has created specific architectural solutions in the average house. Many features in houses published in architectural press depict common solutions in the average area. Economy has also been an important factor. The price of land is very high in proportion to other building related costs. The actual building costs are proportionally lower compared to the land price than in many other places and because of this the redevelopment frequency of properties has become high.   The drawings are from an architectural competition in the city Calahorra in the north of Spain. The idea of the project was to use primarily single-family dwellings to create as high density of population as an area containing taller buildings. The urban solutions were based on situations found in the low-rise districts of Tokyo, this is an attempt to formalize the urban patterns that have developed through long processes in Japan.

Abstract:
In-forest teaching is a vital element of forest science education at university level, and university forests play a critical role in this. In Japan, the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) owns the oldest university forest, which was established in 1894. This paper outlines how the University of Tokyo Forests (UTF) provide in-forest education for forest science. The UTF consist of seven branch stations with a total area of over 32,000 ha. Third- and fourth-year undergraduate students majoring in forest science attend field courses in these forests. Same undergraduate and graduate students are affiliated with the UTF, where they conduct field studies for their graduate theses. Since 2005, the UTF have expanded their educational activities by offering university-wide hands-on experience seminars with field experience for first- and second-year undergraduate students, although these courses are open to all students studying at UTokyo.

Abstract:
The intention: Bring people to Japan to learn about human senses and cognition. This was just before the world locked down for the COVID-19 pandemic. The plan: Conduct a Sensory Safari that coincides with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. An opportunity for people to experience Tokyo at peak form and Japan at the top of its hosting spirit. An immersive way to expose participants to all human senses and methods for making offerings that are more understandable and fully human compatible. This curated experience is inspired by Proctor & Gamble CEO A.G. Lafley and his visit to Japan decades earlier. After this visit he invests heavily in design and human factors seeking Japan-unique innovation in product packaging and placement. Uniqueness found only in Japan that persists to this day. Three years later, the country reopens for business and tourist travel and the renewed Tokyo 2023 Sensory Safari is again set in motion. Behind the safari is the Content Evolution SenseMapping practice team, with pioneering members of the now 30-year-young ThinkPad notebook computer, including the first IBM designer collaborating with the legendary industrial designer Richard Sapper, and the first named brand steward for IBM ThinkPad (today Lenovo). SenseMapping is a process and perspective to create coherence at the intersection of an organization (how it behaves and what it makes) with its value chain, customers, and stakeholders, and the intersection of human sensory perception and sense-making in the head, heart, and gut. The outcome: This paper documents the design of this immersive action learning experience, the framework for both observing and documenting product and service experiences while in Tokyo and sending participants home with a draft plan for action.

Goreczky, Péter. Decoupling or diversification? Dilemmas of India, Japan, and Australia in shaping economic relations with China. Külügyi és Külgazdasági Intézet, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.47683/kkielemzesek.e-2021.29.

Full text
Abstract:
US allies in the Indo-Pacific region, India, Japan and Australia are all making considerable efforts to reduce economic dependence on China. In the case of India, border clashes boost the political motivations of the trend, while in the economic sense the country’s trade deficit, the import of the pharmaceutical and automotive industries, and the determinative role of Chinese capital in the tech sector result in a unique dependency. As for Japanese companies, China remains a key manufacturing base and market, and therefore Tokyo is interested in the diversification of supply chains and manufacturing locations instead of downsizing the relationship completely. Regarding Australia, the overwhelming weight of China in the country’s export is considered a major exposure; however, in the case of iron ore, which is a key item in bilateral trade, the dependency also exists on China’s side. Although for all three countries it is a reasonable goal to enhance the resilience of supply chains and diversify economic relations, the “China plus one” strategy seems to be more beneficial for the future than cutting off economic relations with China across the board.

Brandenberg, Scott, Jonathan Stewart, Kenneth Hudson, Dong Youp Kwak, Paolo Zimmaro, and Quin Parker. Ground Failure of Hydraulic Fills in Chiba, Japan and Data Archival in Community Database. Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center, University of California, Berkeley, CA, July 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.55461/amnh7013.

Full text
Abstract:
This report describes analysis of ground failure and lack thereof observed in the Mihama Ward portion of Chiba, Japan following the 2011 M9.0 Tohoku Earthquake. In conjunction with this work, we have also significantly expanded the laboratory component of the Next Generation Liquefaction (NGL) relational database. The district referred to as Mihama Ward is on ground composed of hydraulic fill sluiced in by pipes, thereby resulting in a gradient of soil coarseness, with coarser soils deposited near the pipes and fine-grained soils carried further away. Observations from local researchers at Chiba University following the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake indicate that ground failure was observed closer to the locations where the pipes deposited the soil, and not further away. This ground failure consisted of extensive sand boiling and ground cracking, which led to building settlement and pipe breaks. Our hypothesis at the outset of the project was that liquefaction susceptibility might explain the pattern of ground failure. Specifically, soils deposited near the pipes are susceptible due to their coarser texture, while soils further from the pipes may be non-susceptible due to the presence of clay minerals and higher plasticity. Were this hypothesis borne out by evidence, soil in the transition zone would have provided important insights about liquefaction susceptibility. Based on testing of soils in our laboratory, we find this hypothesis to be only partially correct. We have confirmed that there are regions with high clay contents and no ground failure and other regions with predominantly granular soils and extensive surface manifestation of liquefaction. Where the hypothesis breaks down is in the transition zone, where we found that the fine-grained soils are non-plastic, and therefore they are susceptible to liquefaction. Our interpretation is that these silt materials likely liquefied during the earthquake, but did not manifest liquefaction. Two factors may have contributed to this lack of manifestation: (1) level ground conditions and lack of large driving static shear stresses (structures in the region are light residential construction) and (2) the silt is less likely to erode to the surface and form silt boils than the sandier soils that produced surface manifestations. This case history points to the importance of separating triggering (defined as the development of significant excess pore pressure and loss of strength) from manifestation (defined as observations of ground failure, including cracking, sand boils, and lateral spreading). The Mihama Ward case history involved laboratory tests performed by Tokyo Soil Research Co. Ltd. and the UCLA geotechnical laboratory. Given the importance of this data to the understanding of this case history, we recognized a need to incorporate laboratory tests in the NGL database alongside field tests and liquefaction observations. We therefore developed an organizational structure for laboratory tests, including direct simple shear, triaxial compression, and consolidation, and implemented the schema in the NGL database. We then uploaded data from tests performed by Tokyo Soil and UCLA. Furthermore, numerous other researchers have also uploaded laboratory test data for other sites. This report describes the organizational structure of the laboratory component of the database, and a tool for interacting with laboratory data.
