The father and son architectural firm of T.J. Tolan & Son and later Brentwood S. Tolan designed seven county courthouses in Indiana, more than any other architectural firm but one. The Tolan firm also designed courthouses throughout the Midwest. Little is known about these architects, except that neither was formally trained. However, the Tolans designed high caliber courthouses that are viewed as some of the best in the state. Using primary and secondary sources, this thesis is an assessment of the courthouses constructed in Indiana by the architectural firm T.J. Tolan & Son and by Brentwood S. Abstract:

The Tol-Pal complex of Gram-negative bacteria is a highly conserved family of interacting proteins that span the periplasm, from inner to outer membrane. Despite decades of work on this protein complex, only the structure of a small part of the Tol complex in E.coli (TolB, Pal, TolB-Pal complex, TolA domain 3) as well as part of TolA from Pseudomonas aeruginosa have been resolved, and the native function of the Tol-Pal system remains elusive. A key interaction of the Tol-Pal system is between TolA and TolB. These two proteins bridge the periplasm, linking the inner membrane complex of TolQ, TolR and TolA with the outer membrane through the outer membrane bound Pal and periplasmic TolB. The structure of the TolA-TolB complex is not known, and although the TolA binding epitope of TolB has been localised to the intrinsically disordered N-terminus of TolB, the binding site on TolA is also unknown (Bonsor et al. 2009). The aim of this work is to address a number of questions regarding a fundamental part of the Tol-Pal system: the interaction between TolA and TolB. This thesis reports that not only is the short 22 residue N-terminus of TolB important for its interaction with TolA domain 3, but that it is the sole site of interaction between E.coli TolA and TolB. This was shown by engineering the E.coli TolB N-terminus onto another protein to create a novel interaction with E.coli TolA. In addition, a synthetic peptide of the N-terminus of TolB binding TolA can recapitulate and serve as a model for the native interaction. This work also reports that the TolA-TolB interaction is conserved between Pseudomonas aeruginosa TolA and TolB, and that the N-terminus is also important for this interaction, the first work to suggest this. Finally, through use of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, residues perturbed on Pseudomonas aeruginosa TolA domain 3 through the binding of a synthetic peptide representing Pseudomonas aeruginosa TolB have been mapped onto the TolA protein to determine the potential binding site of TolB on TolA, something which until now has been unknown.

Abstract:

Objetivo: Analizar la asociación entre la hemorragia post parto y el tipo de parto en mujeres con antecedente de una cesárea previa, e identificar otros factores asociados a la hemorragia. Métodos: Estudio retrospectivo transversal analítico en mujeres con parto institucional en el Hospital María Auxiliadora entre el 01 de Enero y el 31 de Diciembre del 2014. Revisamos las historias de aquellas con antecedente de una cesárea previa, cuyo embarazo actual fue único y con datos completos en la historia clínica. Analizamos la asociación entre tipo de parto y hemorragia post parto mediante la prueba de chi cuadrado y calculamos razones de prevalencia mediante el análisis de modelo lineal generalizado tipo log-binomial. Adicionalmente hicimos un sub-análisis comparativo entre los casos con TOLAC exitosos versus TOLAC frustro. Resultados: Revisamos 362 historias clínicas, de las cuales 95 (26,2%) fueron cesáreas electivas programadas, 92 (25,4%) fueron partos vaginales (TOLAC exitoso), 120 (33,2%) fueron cesáreas de emergencia y 55 (25,4%) fueron intento de parto vaginal más cesárea de emergencia (TOLAC frustro). En total, 191 (52,8%) mujeres presentaron hemorragia post parto, y ésta fue más frecuente con la cesárea de emergencia [1.65 (IC95%:1.24-2.19), p=0.001] y con TOLAC frustro [1.91 (IC95%:1.42- 2.57), p<0,001] con respecto al parto por cesárea electiva. Los casos de TOLAC frustro tuvieron mayor frecuencia de periodo intergenésico corto (27%) que los casos de TOLAC exitoso (13%). Conclusión: En la población estudiada la hemorragia postparto fue más frecuente luego de la cesárea de emergencia y del TOLAC frustro, en comparación a la cesárea electiva. Futuros estudios deben investigar el posible rol de otros factores asociados.

Analiza la obra temprana de José Tola para determinar el modo en que se inició el proceso de búsqueda de la expresión humana, constante desde sus inicios. A partir de ello, se intentará profundizar en el análisis de la producción temprana del artista para contribuir a una mejor comprensión de su obra actual; identificar las características plásticas que construyen la expresión humana tormentosa en sus pinturas iniciales; y proponer nuevas lecturas para la interpretación de la obra del artista. La metodología utilizada en el desarrollo de esta investigación ha consistido, en primer lugar, en la observación directa de las obras, aprovechando la coyuntura de diversas exposiciones realizadas en los últimos años, de las cuales destaca, por su relevancia para esta investigación, la realizada por el ICPNA en el año 2008, que consistió en una antología de su obra plástica desde sus inicios hasta la fecha. Mediante la observación de las obras ha sido posible la familiarización con las mismas y con sus características; asimismo, esto ha permitido la aplicación del análisis comparativo para lograr configurar una idea clara acerca de la evolución que han seguido a través de los años. Abstract:

Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) across the cell envelope of Gram-negative bacteria are critical for mediating signal transduction pathways that underpin cellular homeostasis. The Ton and Tol Pal systems are two conserved, ancestrally related protein networks that are also required for bacterial pathogenesis. Both Ton and Tol-Pal traverse the periplasm to effect different functions at the outer membrane (OM). Tol-Pal is composed of a homologous complex of three inner membrane proteins, TolQ-TolR-TolA (linked to proton motive force) and two additional periplasmic proteins TolB and Pal. The physiological role of the Tol-Pal system is to stabilise the OM, however the mechanism involved is unknown. TolA is however known to form a crucial protein-protein interaction via its C-terminus with the disordered N-terminus of TolB. Prior to this thesis, determination of the molecular features underlying a protein-protein complex between TolA and an endogenous binding partner TolB had never been accomplished. In this work, I describe the first structure comprising the TolA-TolB complex from Gram negative bacteria. The structure of this complex was determined from Pseudomonas aeruginosa by solution NMR spectroscopy. I determined the interaction between P. aeruginosa TolA and a TolB N terminal peptide to be relatively weak using fluorescence anisotropy. I found that TolB interacts with TolA through an analogous mechanism to that seen in TonB-dependent transporters. Based on these studies and bioinformatics analyses, I hypothesize that the evolutionary resilience of the Tol-Pal system to external pressures is contingent on the preservation of the TolA-TolB interface. Structure-based mutations within the TolA-TolB complex were also evaluated for their effect on in vivo function of the Tol-Pal complex and impact on complex formation in vitro. Taken together, the results demonstrate that protein networks which transduce energy to the OM through PMF-dependent systems in bacterial cells appear to follow a common β-strand augmentation mechanism.

Tra le varie possibilità metodologiche ed ermeneutiche per lo studio di un poema epico, ci concentreremo qui sulla questione della storicità dell'opera, il suo momento di composizione e le risposte ai precedenti epici. Come una epopea eroico-storica, l'Eneide è intesa come documento di complessità inesauribile per studiare il tempo del poeta. Cerchiamo di valutare come le promesse di apoteosi dell'eroe e dei suoi discendenti, Giulio Cesare e Ottaviano, sono collegate nella trama, offrendo alla casa dei principi da cui deriva l'Imperatore Augusto, domus Iulia, ascendenza divina ed eroica. In grado, quindi, di rafforzare la sua posizione di prestigio sociale e politico, mettendo la famiglia imperiale di sopra delle altre famiglie aristocratiche. Il poeta fa Giove promettere all'eroe, figlio di Venere, un tipo di sollevamento ad sidera, allo scopo di ricordare la consecratio/katasterismos di Giulio Cesare la cui anima è stata identificata alla stella che è apparsa nei cieli di Roma alla celebrazione dei Giochi per la Vittoria di Cesare - Ludi Victoriae Caesaris (44 a.C). Ottaviano, a sua volta, è citato come un dio potenziale con un posto riservato nel pantheon romano. Più di una determinazione dello fatum, Virgilio presenta la prospettiva di sollevamento stellare basata sul merito rappresentato sia dalla reputazione e dalla uirtus che sono costruiti nella vita dell'individuo. In concomitanza con l'analisi ermeneutica dello epico, il nostro sforzo metodologico si sviluppa in due direzioni: in primo luogo, facciamo un passo indietro al periodo repubblicano per seguire le tracce dello radicamento di Enea divinizzato nelle leggende di fondazione e nella topografia del Lazio. Inoltre, dalle testimonianze testuali e dalle monete mettiamo in discussione il legame tra l'eroe troiano alla genealogia della famiglia degli Iulii. Nel secondo movimento, al di là del periodo di composizione dell'Eneide, abbiamo cercato di valutare l'investimento nella genealogia troiana e la riappropriazione di temi epici nelle cerimonie, monumenti e sculture del primo secolo. Quindi, abbiamo anche analizzato le appropriazioni dello tema della divinizzazione di Enea da altri autori come Livio, Dionigi di Alicarnasso e, soprattutto, Ovidio nelle Metamorfosi. We investigate in this Thesis a specific element of Aeneas’ myth: the heroic divinization that appears as a promise of fatum in the lines of the Aeneid, epic poem composed between the years 29 and 19 BC. Among the several methodological and hermeneutical possibilities for the study of an epic, we focus on the problem of the historicity of the work, its moment of composition and the responses to previous epic models. As a heroic-historical epic, the Aeneid is understood as an inexhaustible and complex document for studying the poet's time. We try to assess how the promises of apotheosis of this hero and his descendants, Julius Caesar and Octavian, are linked into the plot, providing to the rulers house, from which comes the Emperor Augustus, Domus Iulia, heroic and divine ancestry. Able, therefore, to strengthen its social and political prestige, putting the imperial family apart from the other aristocratic families. The poet reserves to this hero, son of Venus, one kind of upswing ad sidera in order to recall the consecratio/katasterismos of Julius Caesar whose soul has been identified to star – sidus/astrumv - that appeared in the skies of Rome during the celebration of the Games in Honor of Caesar's Victory - Ludi Victoriae Caesaris (44 a.C). More than a settlement of fatum, Virgil presents the prospect of stellar ascension based on merit represented by the fame and uirtus which are both constructed during the individual's life. Allong with the hermeneutic analysis, our methodological effort unfolds in two directions: firstly, we step back to the republican past to track the rooting of Aeneas deified in the foundation narratives and topography of Latium. Moreover, from textual sources and numismatic evidence, we bring the issue of the constructed link between the Trojan hero and the genealogy of the Iulii. In a second movement, we seek to evaluate the investment in Trojan genealogy and the reappropriation of epic themes by the ceremonies, monuments and sculptural artifacts from the first century AD. Therefore, we analyze the reappropriation of this theme of Aeneas' divinization by the augustan authors, Livy, Dionysius of Halicarnassus and especially Ovid in Metamorphoses. Investigamos nesta Tese um elemento específico do mito de Enéias: a divinização heroica que aparece como promessa do fatum nas linhas da Eneida de Virgílio, poema épico composto entre os anos 29 e 19 a.C. Buscamos avaliar como as promessas de apoteose do herói e seus descendentes, Júlio César e Otávio, estão concatenadas na trama, conferindo à casa de governantes a qual se liga o Imperador Augusto, domus Iulia, ancestralidade divina e heroica. Capaz, portanto, de reforçar sua posição de prestígio social e político frente às outras famílias aristocráticas. O poeta reserva ao heroi, filho de Vênus, um tipo de elevação ad sidera, de forma a rememorar a consecratio/katasterismos de Júlio César cuja alma foi identificada ao astro – astrum/ sidus - que apareceu nos céus de Roma durante celebração dos Jogos à Vitória de César - Ludi Victoriae Caesaris (44 a.C). Otávio, por sua vez, é mencionado como um diuus em potência, com um lugar reservado no panteão romano. Mais do que uma determinação do fatum, Virgílio apresenta esta perspectiva de ascensão sideral fundamentada no mérito, representado tanto pela fama quanto pela uirtus que são construídas em vida pelo indivíduo. Concomitante à análise hermenêutica do épico, nosso esforço metodológico se desdobra em dois sentidos: primeiramente, recuamos ao passado republicano para rastrear na documentação textual e arqueológica o enraizamento de Enéias divinizado nas narrativas fundacionais e na topografia do Lácio. Ademais, a partir das fontes textuais e da evidência numismática, problematizamos a vinculação do heroi troiano à genealogia familiar dos Iulii. Em um segundo movimento, para além do período de composição da Eneida, buscamos avaliar o investimento na genealogia troiana e a reapropriação de temas épicos nos cerimoniais, monumentos e artefatos esculturais do século I d.C. Por conseguinte, nos debruçamos sobre as reapropriações do tema da divinização de Enéias pelos autores do Principado de Augusto, Tito Lívio, Dionísio de Halicarnasso e especialmente Ovídio nas Metamorfoses.

Abstract:

For most of the 20th century, the saying “once a cesarean, always a cesarean” was a rule in the United States. Today, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) opposes the dictum and urges women to consider trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC). However, the factors that lead to a successful outcome remain unclear, as research continues to be conducted in hopes of creating a predictive model for vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) success. The NIH’s request for more research in this area of obstetrics led to this retrospective cohort study of all TOLACs at Marin General Hospital (MGH) from 2000-2013. All labor trials were studied for patient demographics, details of labor, maternal and neonatal morbidities, insurance, and provider type. After confirming the quality of the data, verifying inclusion criteria and ignoring cases with missing data, a data set of 745 TOLACs with 13 explanatory variables of interest was prepared. A forward stepwise (Likelihood Ratio) binary logistic regression was run in IBM® SPSS® Statistics in order to create a model that could determine which variables were most predictive of delivery outcome in TOLAC patients. Ultimately, seven variables were predictive and were included in the model. Of the seven, the most predictive variable in determining VBAC success was provider type. The model concluded that a woman’s odds of having a successful VBAC were almost four times greater if she began her delivery with a certified nurse midwife, than if she began her deliver with a physician (odds ratio 0.27, 95% CI 0.17-0.44; < 0.01). The results from this study mimic the results of other models, and introduce labor support as a key factor in predicting VBAC success.

Abstract:

La marge de Nankai dans la zone Tokai n'a pas subi de rupture lors du dernier épisode sismique de 1944-1946, qui a affectée tout le reste de la marge. Un fort séisme est donc à attendre à cet endroit au cours des prochaines années. Afin de mieux contraindre l'étendue de la zone sismogène, une campagne sismique 3D a été menée en 2000 sur le prisme de Nankai. Cette thèse s'inscrit dans la double thématique méthodologique et géologique de cette campagne. L'aspect méthodologique comprend la prise en compte des specificités de l'imagerie 3D par rapport à l'imagerie 2D classique. Lors de l'acquisition, la géométrie du dispositif source-récepteurs doit être parfaitement connue. Grâce à une méthode mise au point à cet effet, la géométrie a pu être reconstruite avec une excellente précision. Le traitement a également amélioré sensiblement les images obtenues, même si certains objets n'apparaissent pas de manière évidente dans les données. Les images 3D ont cependant permis de beaucoup mieux contraindre la position des failles majeures du prisme (Tokai, Kodaiba) en profondeur, et donc de mieux comprendre la cinématique du prisme. L'aspect géologique a révélé que la déformation de la marge est dominée par les événements Quaternaires, qui ont affecté une couverture du bassin d'avant-arc très calme auparavant. Plusieurs phases de plissement sont visibles, dont une en avant du bassin qui peut chronologiquement être reliée à l'arrivée en subduction d'une ride océanique. L'étude du BSR a également permis indirectement de donner un ordre de grandeur des processus d'érosion et de sédimentation sur la marge. Les larges glissements de terrains observés peuvent être simplement liés à l'activité sismique de la marge, sans intervention de surpression de fluides dans les pores. Enfin, un volcan observé en subduction est peut-être à l'origine de l'inactivation de la faille de Tokai, qui ne présente aucun signe d'activité récente.

Also, this thesis will give benefits for the academics and managers of other multinational corporations.Method : Qualitative approach and comparative design are implemented in this thesis meanwhile secondary data from internet, documentary research and primary data from semi-structured interview through telephone & email are used for collecting information. More importantly, Tokai Carbon is chosen as a case study to understand organization structure and its coordination between Japanese company and Thai & Chinese subsidiaries.Conclusion : The organization structure and coordination should be concerned in multinational corporations. Tokai Carbon Co., Ltd. as a multinational Japanese company who runs business and establishes various subsidiaries in worldwide mostly centralizes power to headquarters. Also, Tokai Carbon Co., Ltd. applied means of formal and informal coordination in order to cooperate between Tokai Carbon Co., Ltd. (headquarters) and Thai Tokai Carbon Product Co., Ltd (Thai subsidiaries) & Tokai Carbon Tianjin Co., Ltd. (Chinese subsidiaries). With respect to formal and informal mechanisms, these two mechanisms are similarly implemented in collaboration between headquarters and Thai & Chinese subsidiaries. Nonetheless, there are a few differences on informal tools in form of lateral relations and socialization.
