This study emphasizes the role of pain catastrophizing and state anxiety on pain tolerance and pain-related anxiety. Response expectancies for pain tolerance and pain intensity were tested as potential mediators. A cold-pressor task was used on a healthy sample. Measures were taken before and after cold-pressor procedure, while aversive versus neutral information regarding the cold-pressor task was given prior to the pain induction. An exploratory path model was conducted. Similar paths for pain tolerance and for pain-related anxiety were shown in aversive condition. Also, psychological measur

Endurance athletes have indicated that the ability to tolerate high levels of athletic pain accounted for much of their success (Egan, 1987). This study examined the role of stress inoculation training (SIT) in increasing athletic pain tolerance on an isometric quadriceps task. Athletes (N = 45) from the sports of rowing, cycling, and triathlon completed the study, which consisted of performing a wall sit for as long as possible in a pretest-posttest control group design. The results indicated that subjects receiving training in SIT significantly increased their tolerance time on the wall sit,

Abstract Introduction Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is the most prevalent Mendelian disease in the U.S. and is characterized by HbS polymerization, hemolytic anemia and vaso-occlusion. The hallmark clinical manifestation of SCA is acute vaso-occlusive pain crisis (VOC) with severe episodes requiring hospitalization for pain management. Vaso-occlusion resulting in pain is believed to occur with hypoxia, intra-vascular erythrocyte sickling and ischemia reperfusion injury. Recurring episodes of VOC often have no clear causation and may have effects upon physiological pain perception and intrinsic psyc

Background Opioid analgesia has become the mainstay for acute pain management in the postoperative setting. However, the use of opioid medications comes with significant risks and side effects. Due to increasing numbers of prescriptions to those with chronic pain, opioid medications have become more expensive while becoming less effective due to the buildup of patient tolerance. The idea of opioid-free analgesic techniques has rarely been breached in many hospitals.
