Abstract:
To mark 150 years of being ‘Open to the World’ Ca’ Foscari invited students to write about their mobility experiences abroad, and to focus on a learning experience – not necessarily a formal one. More than a hundred students participated. This volume brings together the winning accounts and all the short and long listed entries. As well as illuminating the significance of the mobility experience to students’ personal development and celebrating fundamental human values of tolerance, friendship, and hospitality, they reveal a great well of creative resources in the use of English as a lingua franca.

Abstract:
Multiculturalism confirms that peoples of different roots can coexist beyond the boundaries of race, language and religion. In recent times, with the accentuation of new migratory processes, the West has however come to find itself between integration and conflict. New political and religious fundamentalisms have emerged that are threatening the encounter between different cultures. On the one side is fear, and on the other the values of tolerance and respect. This book contains a number of reflections presented at the XII International Summer School on Religions (San Gimignano, 27-31 August 2005) organised by the International Centre for Studies on Contemporary Religion.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter problematizes the notions and language of tolerance and accommodation in relation to religious diversity, and traces their genealogy both as legal solutions and as discursive frameworks within which religious diversity is increasingly understood in the public sphere. The problem they pose is that they create a hierarchy of privilege that preserves hegemonic power relations by religious majorities over religious minorities. Tolerance in this context might be imagined as the broadly stated value that we must deal with diversity and those who are different from us by tolerating them. Accommodation might be seen as the implementation of this value—that in order to demonstrate our commitment to tolerance we must accommodate the ‘demands’ of minority groups and those individuals who position themselves or align themselves with minorities.

Abstract:
Abstract A quintessential liberal value, tolerance, according to a common liberal narrative, addresses the problem of monotheistic religious violence by protecting the individual freedoms of religion and conscience through the separation of church and state and side-lining judgments about the common good. Setting aside this liberal narrative, my book recovers tolerance’s origins in a North African Christian tradition that derives accounts of political judgment and patience within pluralistic communities from theological reflection on God’s roles as a patient father and just judge. By recovering this forgotten tradition, we can better understand and assess the choices made by leading theorists of liberal tolerance and, as a result, think better about how to achieve peaceful coexistence in a world in which many members of the world’s two largest religions, Christianity and Islam, are skeptical of liberalism.

Abstract:
Values bind us together which makes our communities stronger and united. Communities are built upon our tolerance and understanding of the value of our ties, and ties pave our cities towards a bright future. The structure of this book is constructed around the concept of value”. It contains a collection of readings about the Challenges we face in Cities, Culture, and Heritage. The book is divided into three Parts. The first part focuses on aesthetical values; the second contains articles on cultural values in cities, and the third part is a specialized theme on water values and urban areas. Tripkovic, Bosko. Values and Normative Judgment. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198808084.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter develops an account of value and normative judgment by exploring the tension between the theoretical and practical perspective. The theoretical perspective explains moral values as contingent upon our evaluative attitudes, and the practical perspective presents values as independent from these attitudes. To overcome this tension, the chapter develops the notions of confidence and reflection. It describes how confidence in our practical perspective emerges through reflection: this process involves seeking greater coherence, introspection, and imagination to discover more authentic and self-definitional evaluative attitudes, and accommodation of other evaluative perspectives through openness, flexibility, tolerance, and persuasion. The chapter argues that values are both revealed and reshaped in this process, and that dynamics between confidence and reflection provides an apposite model for making normative judgments, including judicial moral judgments.

Spencer, Vicki A., ed. Toleration in Comparative Perspective. The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Inc, 2017. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781978739840.

Full text
Abstract:
Toleration in Comparative Perspective is a collection of essays that explores conceptions of toleration and tolerance in Asia and the West. It tests the common assumption in Western political discourse and contemporary political theory that toleration is a uniquely Western virtue. Toleration in modern Western philosophy is understood as principled noninterference in the practices and beliefs of others that one disapproves of or, at least, dislikes. Although toleration might be seen today as a quintessential liberal value, precedents to this modern concept also existed in medieval times while Indigenous American stories about welcome challenge the very possibility of noninterference. The modern Western philosophical concept of toleration is not always easily translated into other philosophical traditions, but this book opens a dialogue between various traditions of thought to explore precisely the ways in which overlap and distinctions exist. What emerges is the existence of a family of resemblances in approaches to religious and cultural diversity from a program of pragmatic noninterference in the Ottoman Empire to deeper notions of acceptance and inclusiveness amongst the Newar People in the Kathmandu Valley. The development of an Islamic ethic of tolerance, the Daoist idea of all-inclusiveness, and Confucian ideas of broad-mindedness, respect, and coexistence to the idea of ‘the one in the many’ in Hindu thought are examined along with sources for intolerance, tolerance, and toleration in Pali Buddhism, early modern Japan, and contemporary India.
