One of the main factors affecting the survival of rhizobia on seed is desiccation stress. The poor survival of rhizobia affects nodulation, nitrogen fixation and legume yield. A better understanding of desiccation tolerance and how it may be enhanced may contribute to the development of strategies to improve survival of rhizobia on seed. This study aimed to improve the survival of rhizobia by enhancing inherent mechanisms of desiccation tolerance through the manipulation of the growth medium. Abstract:
Plant tolerance to salinity stress involves complex physiological traits, metabolic pathways, and molecular and gene networks (Gupta and Huang, 2014, Int J Genomics). Salinity impacts plants by causing osmotic stress and ion toxicity. Salt stress also causes the production of excessive reactive oxygen species (Munns and Tester, 2008, Annu Rev Plant Biol). Salt-stress perception and signalling are required for appropriate responses to these insults. Key components of the signalling pathways induced by salt stress are Ca2+ (Knight et al., 1997, Plant J), NO and the recently re-evaluated H2O2.

The primary mission of the immune system is to defend against invading pathogens. The normal healthy body can distinguish self from non-self antigens. When a new antigen is encountered, such discriminatory capacity would generate a productive immune response against invasive pathogens or exert antigen-specific tolerance, the latter to prevent harmful immune responses against self-components or non-dangerous food or environmental antigens. Peripheral tolerance plays an important role in preventing T cells response to self or harmless antigens. A breakdown in tolerance within an individual can r
