Nanopartículas multicomponentes magnéticas/metálicas tem atraído muito atenção devido as suas propriedades magnéticas e ópticas únicas. Essas heteroestruturas podem ser aplicadas em terapia biomedicinal e imagem ou podem ser utilizadas também como carregadores de droga. Neste trabalho foram preparadas nanopartículas multicomponentes de CoFe 2O4/Ag atrav és do método de Tollens. A síntese de nanopartículas de ferrita de cobalto (CoFe 2O4) foi feita pelo método de co-precipitação química, usando como bases precipitantes, metilamina (CH3NH2) e o hidróxido de sódio (NaOH). Posteriormente as nanopartículas magnéticas foram colocadas em solução contendo o complexo diaminprata e deixadas sob agitação por um determinado tempo. Por _m, este complexo foi reduzido à prata metálica por glicose. Os diâmetros das ferritas puras e das estruturas multicomponentes foram obtidos por meio de difração de raios x do pó. A análise estrutural revelou a formação de única fase cristalina para as nanopartículas de ferrita de cobalto. Para os nanocompósitos multicomponentes o padrão de DRX mostrou a presença de picos de difração correspondentes as estruturas cúbicas das ferritas e da prata. Foi observado que a intensidade dos picos de difração das partículas híbridas tem dependência da razão Ag=CoFe2O4: Do ponto de vista macroscópico, ao serem submetidas a um imã as nanopartículas multicomponentes foram atraídas pelo mesmo, con_rmando assim, o seu comportamento magnético. As medidas de microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET) com espectroscopia de energia dispersiva (EDS) possibilitaram a visualização da interação entre as superfícies das duas estruturas. Foi possível através desta técnica obter a composição qualitativa e quantitativa dos materiais em regiões específicas.
Magnetic/metallic nanoparticles multicomponent has attracted much attention due to their unique magnetic and optical properties. Such heterostructures can be applied to biomedicinal therapy or image and can also be used as drug carriers. In this work, multicomponent nanoparticles CoFe2O4/Ag were prepared by Tollens method. The synthesis of cobalt ferrite CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were made by chemical coprecipitation method and, as precipitating bases, we have used methylamine (CH3NH2) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Subsequently, the magnetic nanoparticles were placed in the solution containing the complex diamin silver and left stirring for a certain time. Finally, this complex is reduced to metallic silver by glucose The diameters of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles and multicomponent structures were obtained from the powder diffraction X-rays patterns. Structural analysis showed the single spinel phase for ferrites. For the hybrid nanocomposites, the XRD patterns showed the presence of peaks corresponding to the cubic structure of ferrite and silver. It was observed that the intensity of the diffraction peaks of multicomponent particles is ratio dependent. From a macroscopic point of view, the hybrid particles have been subjected to an external magnetic field and were attracted confirming the magnetic behavior. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) allowed the visualization of both silver and ferrite structure. It was possible with this technique to obtain qualitative and quantitative materials analysis in specific spots.

Reducing AgNO3 by glucose at basic pH coated the surface of silica spheres with a high density of hemispherical silver nanoparticles (average diameter 3.2±1 nm). A much lower silver concentration than is standard favored heterogeneous nucleation of silver on the silica surface at the expense of homogeneous nucleation in solution. The slow growth rate of the nuclei promoted the formation of discrete silver particles rather than a continuous shell. Based on scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, the surface coverage of silver seed particles was as high as 25% at 10 °C without prior functionalization of the silica. The particles were composed of metallic silver based on x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. There was a sharp increase in the silver surface coverage and decrease in the particle size when the temperature was raised from 5 °C to 10 °C and the amount of silica was decreased from 0.2 to 0.025 V/V. The size was controlled by the diffusion barrier through the ion shell surrounding the silica spheres and by maintaining reaction conditions where the particles on the surface compete for silver.

Abstract:
Detection and identification of pesticide residues on objects of cultural heritage is a serious and urgent challenge that currently faces many museums, Native American communities, and private collections worldwide. Organic artifact materials, such as wood, animal hide, basketry, textiles, paper, horn and bone, have traditionally been treated with pesticides to eradicate and prevent infestation by insects, rodents, and mold. These poisonous substances can persist for years in the controlled environment of a museum storeroom and present a potential poisoning risk to people who come in contact with the objects. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has the potential to detect volatile organic pesticides in this context. The technique can overcome the insensitivity of normal Raman spectroscopy and fluorescence interference, and make possible detection of many organic compounds in parts per million concentration. This investigation is aimed at evaluating SERS for the detection and identification of volatiles in museums, with emphasis on naphthalene vapor. The potential of several SERS-active materials; Tollens mirrors, gold film over nanosphere arrays, citrate-stabilized colloidal silver, and nanoporous gold; to detect Rhodamine B and naphthalene is investigated. The research also highlights the mechanisms that underlie SERS, and the relationship between substrate nanostructure and SERS performance.

Abstract:
El objetivo principal de este trabajo fue el desarrollo y optimización de un proceso de síntesis de nanopartículas de plata en películas delgadas analizadas mediante la técnica SERS (Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering) para la detección de arsénico en soluciones acuosas. En efecto, se sintetizó nanopartículas de plata siguiendo la reacción Tollens en medio acuoso bañando la superficie de láminas de vidrio con movimientos pendulares a fin de generar una morfología de nanopartículas alargadas y tamaños inferiores a los 100 nm. La reducción de iones plata con glucosa se realiza en un vickers con agitador magnético para luego ser vertido de inmediato sobre el dispositivo con movimiento pendular controlado, con ello es posible relacionar el tamaño de crecimiento de las nanopartículas en función al número de oscilaciones que presenta la programación del dispositivo y al tratamiento del sustrato donde es depositado. El enjuague de la película formada se realiza con metanol para evitar la coalescencia de las nanopartículas, este solvente se volatiliza posteriormente en una campana colocando los sustratos en ángulos de 50° a 60° con respecto a la base del soporte. Esto con la finalidad de que el solvente pueda disiparse rápidamente y no deje marcas dentro de la película. Los resultados obtenidos son cualitativos en la identificación de As 5+ con técnica SERS en los cuales se ha encontrado respuesta desde 10 ppb hasta 0.5 ppb y muestran tendencia para la cuantificación. Además, las láminas conteniendo las nanopartículas fueron caracterizadas a través de técnicas de espectroscopia UV-VIS, difracción de Rayos X (XRD), espectroscopia de energía dispersiva (EDS), microscopia interferencial y se ha tomado imágenes de las nanopartículas con el microscopio de barrido electrónico (SEM).

Abstract:
This thesis examines the development of the political outlook of the German author and revolutionary politician, Ernst Toller. It begins by looking at Toller's early years and explains how his experience as a front-line soldier during the First World war transformed his views, causing him to reject the conservative-nationalist ethos he had grown up with and to become, in his own description, a revolutionary pacifist. It then looks at his involvement in the revolutionary events which took place in Bavaria at the end of the First World War, the so-called Räterepublik, examines how they affected his understanding of social and political reality and traces their artistic reflection in the plays he wrote in the following period. A recurrent theme in Toller's political thinking throughout the years of the Weimar Republic was the idea of an Einheitsfront, a defence block of workers' organisations, which he advocated as the only means of halting the rise of National Socialism. Unfortunately, Toller's appeals to the main workers' parties to form such a block went unheard, yet they are significant all the same in that they reveal the acute political insight of a man whom many of his contemporaries dismissed as a hopeless utopian. Interestingly, and a point often missed in studies of his politics, Toller abandoned the Einheitsfront after he went into exile in 1933 and came to favour instead the creation of a Volksfront a broad, cross-party anti-fascist coalition which the Soviet Union vigorously promoted all through the 1930s until the signing of the Stalin-Hitler Pact in 1940. Toller's support for this idea, in part a corollary of his support for the Soviet Union itself, had a profound impact on his political outlook in exile, and caused him to close his eyes to the repression suffered by the opponents of the Stalin regime both inside and outside Russia, and, most significantly, led him to ignore the nascent socialist revolution which flourished in Spain after the defeat of Franco's coup d'etat in 1936. This study examines in some detail, therefore, Toller's involvement in the Volksfront, redefines his attitude towards Communist Russia and shows how his efforts to suppress his revolutionary beliefs and to become instead a mere anti-fascist affected his creative spirit during his years of exile.

Abstract 3200 years ago a massive battle took place at the river Tollense in MecklenburgVorpommern, Germany, possibly involving thousands of people. 130 victims have been found so far. Several show signs of former violence. Axes, wooden clubs, knives and a vast number of arrowheads have been found among the human skeletal remains. According to isotope analyses on tooth enamel from human remains at the site, a considerable amount of the victims did not originate from the local area. The isotope analyses divided the victims into two major groups, one local and the other probably originating from Central Europe. In other words, the battlefield of the Tollense were not fought by local farmers and craftsmen. This, together with the extent of the battle, the weapon finds and traumata on the human remains, has led archaeologists to assume that the battle was fought by professional warriors. If this is true, the battlefield of the Tollense would be the first of its kind in the Northern European Bronze Age. Sammanfattning Uppsatsen diskuterar omfattningen och karaktären av slaget vid floden Tollense som utspelade sig för 3200 år sedan i vad som idag är Nordtyskland. Slagfältet har uppmärksammats för att vara den första konflikten med professionella krigare i bronsålderns Nordeuropa. Tidigare forskning om ämnet saknar en konsekvent definition av begreppet professionell krigare. För att avgöra om det var professionella krigare som stred vid Tollense definierar uppsatsen begreppet utifrån teoretiska perspektiv såsom antropologiska klassifikationer av hövdingadömen, krigare och soldater, men också genom att belysa kontaktnätverken och den långväga handel som växte fram under bronsåldern. Omfattningen och karaktären av slaget vid Tollense beskrivs utifrån hur många människor som deltog på slagfältet samt vilka arkeologiska fynd som talar för huruvida de var professionella krigare och inte lokala bönder och hantverkare som drabbade samman. Uppsatsen är en klassisk litteraturstudie. Utgrävningarna vid Tollense pågår i skrivande stund, vilket innebär att det inte finns någon slutpublikation med färdigställda resultat. För att besvara frågeställningarna om antalet deltagare i konflikten samt huruvida de var professionella krigare eller inte, redogör uppsatsen för analyser av de mänskliga kvarlevorna som återfunnits vid Tollense och vapnen som användes på slagfältet. Avslutningsvis ger uppsatsen en personlig tolkning av vad fyndmaterialet säger om hur många människor som var involverade i konflikten och vad som talar för att de var professionella krigare. Diskussionen lyfter fram hövdingadömen som centraliserade och hierarkiska samhällsstrukturer och hur detta möjliggör organiserad krigföring.

Companies have been faced with the decision of whether or not to comply with e-tolling since its inception in 2013. Media coverage on e-tolling has reflected many negative opinions, though these are mostly from private citizens. Despite the dismissal of legal challenges against e-tolling s implementation, collections of e-tolls remain well short of SANRAL s budgeted figures. Responsible decision makers within companies ultimately make the compliance decisions. This research aimed to investigate business compliance to e-tolling. Relevant academic literature was reviewed in order to form a basis for exploration of this topic. The constructs identified from the literature were fairness of the e-tolling system, the efficiency of public spending with respect to the construction of the upgraded freeways, the financial impact that e-tolling is having on companies and whether companies are complying with e-tolling. Quantitative research was conducted on the responses received from surveys sent to members of the RFA. The findings reveal that e-tolling is perceived to be an unfair system. E-tolling was having a negative impact on company finances yet, companies displayed an overwhelming compliance toward e-tolling. The findings also revealed that much of the literature relevant to individuals was not applicable to companies.

Traffic congestion can incur serious costs on society, and reducing these costs is of high importance. This paper assesses the feasibility of a price change or other demand shift on the toll roads in Southern California in alleviating traffic on the public freeways, using California State Road 73 and Interstate 5 as a case study. State Road 73 is found to have the ability to take on additional traffic density, which would increase the flow for all drivers on both Interstate 5 and State Road 73. Alternatives to traditional tolls are also offered as potential solutions to congestion in Southern California.

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to examine the traffic safety impact of upgrading Toll Plazas (TP) to Open Road Tolling (ORT). The ORT could enhance safety but could also pose some traffic safety concerns at Toll plazas. Crashes from eight years were investigated by evaluating the crash data before and after the implementation of the ORT. The study was conducted by using two approaches: 1) a simple before and after study and with a comparison group; 2) a modeling effort to help understand the relationship between the crash frequency and several important factors and circumstances such as injury severity, collision types, average daily traffic (ADT) and Toll plaza characteristics. The study investigated 11 Toll plazas on State Roads 408, 417, 528 and 429 that have been changed to the ORT design. Several maps showing the Toll plazas and identifying the relevant crash locations were generated. Negative Binomial (NB), Log Linear model and two-way contingency table were examined. Two log-linear models with three variables in each model with all possible two-way interactions were developed. Categorical data analysis of the 2009 and 2010 crash dataset was performed. In order to compare the differences in response between the crash frequency and a particular crash-related variable, odds ratios were computed. The effects of crash frequency and crash-related factors were examined, and interactions among them were considered. The results indicated significant relationships between the crash frequency and ADT, crash type and driver age. It is worth mentioning that the expressway network understudy was continuously experiencing constructions throughout the study period. There is indication that ORT reduced the total crash number; also there is indication of changing the crash types and locations; and the majority of crashes occurred at the diverging and merging areas and resulted in more severe crashes. More data may be needed to confirm these results especially after all constructions and upgrades are made. The Implementation of open road tolling, the locations of Toll plazas, Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) subscription rate, traffic demand, and plaza geometry all may have a high influence on traffic safety concerns at Toll plazas, as concluded from the negative Binomial Model's results. The changing of sign locations, reducing the speed limit, installing variable message signs, configuring plazas properly, and other considerations may be the solution to overcome the potential safety problems in the vicinity of Toll plazas. The change of design to ORT was proven to be an excellent solution to several traffic operation problems, including reducing congestion and improving traffic flow and capacity at Toll plazas. However, addressing safety concerns at Toll plazas should take priority.

Abstract:
E-tolling was recently implemented on roads in Gauteng, South Africa. This gave rise to a great deal of protest by road users and a court battle between the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) and the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance, a body representing road users. The e-tolling system was criticised at various levels and on numerous grounds, some financial and others appearing to be emotional. This thesis attempted to analyse the various grounds for objection against the system, the main goal of the research being to analyse e-tolling in Gauteng to ascertain whether or not the introduction of e-tolling was justified or whether an alternative method of taxation to pay for the upgrading of Gauteng roads would have been more cost-effective. Secondary data in the form of documents from multiple sources was used in the analysis, including an Economic Impact Assessment that was one of the key inputs into the decision to introduce e-tolling. It was found that there are multiple problems plaguing the e-toll system and e-tolling is not the most cost-effective taxation method of paying for Gauteng roads. Using a fuel levy or general tax revenue available to the National Treasury were both found to be more cost-effective methods as they would have achieved the same result (repairing and upgrading specific Gauteng roads), at a cost of R20,0913 billion less than e-tolling. It was suggested that the best taxation method/s to pay for the roads would have been using a fuel levy and general tax revenue as the primary funding methods, with vehicle licensing fees and long distance toll roads as secondary methods to aid the primary methods.

ORT represents the next generation of Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) and this research report will assess to what extent the GFIP scheme is in line with other comparable tolling schemes; and is the institutional environment amenable to ORT. This will allow one to gauge the feasibility of the scheme and its potential for acceptability and success. The research report outlines the number of risks that come with an ORT scheme and these include amongst others collection risk, enforcement, technology, privacy and public acceptance. The success of the GFIP will largely be determined by how well these risks are mitigated and how the benefits can be marketed to the users. The literature review illustrates that whether road pricing schemes have failed to move forward, have been implemented, are currently under development, or still in the planning stage as a concept there are several consistent lessons and critical success factors one should apply when structuring a scheme. In the discussions with stakeholders, the following conclusions with regards to the feasibility of ORT and its development in South Africa were as follows: The factors which need to be addressed include political risk, effective marketing of the scheme to the public, obtaining political will and support, building trust between the scheme developer and the user, managing perceptions and acknowledgement of the fact that the scheme will need to prove itself over time. Inadequate demonstration of equity for the user along with poor communication would compromise public acceptance and the success of the scheme. Incorporating interoperability yields benefits in terms in terms of network externalities, the ability to use a single transponder for multiple tolling plazas and points, along with the potential for alternative uses for the transponder. ORT as a viable solution for the GFIP is feasible from a technical point in that it's the only way in which one can collect tolls from a high volume network and not cause disruptions in the flow of traffic. However, there are a number of persistent residual risks that SANRAL cannot entirely mitigate and some fall under the realm of political risk. While SANRAL has applied best practice principles in structuring the GFIP with the aim of providing value for money for the user and as far as possible tackling the issue of affordability, there are certain realities, such as the recent global financial crisis, the infrastructure backlog of the country, users paying for roads which were free and challenges with overall service delivery which place a strain on the legitimacy of the GFIP ORT scheme.

Ernst Toller was a German playwright best known for his expressionist plays and for his participation in post World War 1 political upheavels in Münich, Bavaria. In my thesis I focus on three of Toller’s plays - Masses Man (1921), Hinkemann, the German (1923), and Hoppla, We're Alive! (1927) to discuss the relationship between man and masses in Toller’s work. To support my argument I will discuss the importance of theater as Mass Ornament and its implications for the creation of a political theater that saw as its main goal to inform the working class about living conditions in a capitalist society and to urge them to political action against inhuman conditions. Depicted as the battle of a single man who rises from the masses to urge his fellow workers and human beings to a non-violent revolution and change of mind, the pacifist hero in Toller's plays is rejected and treated as an outcast. In Masses Man the heroine is as a woman that is alienated from her husband because of her dedication to the proletarian cause whilst at the same time scorned by the masses for refusing to join their armed battle. In Hinkemann, the German the conflict between man and masses is depicted less as the struggle between conflicting ideas and more like the personal tragedy of a single man who is unable to gain the respect of his fellow beings after a war injury. In Hoppla, We're Alive – a play that is less programmatic and pessimistic than the other two plays – the conflict between man and masses plays out in the life of a revolutionary who after his release from a mental institution is unable to adapt to the changes in political rhetoric after the revolution.

As many variable pricing projects are still in the implementation stage, long-run driver responses to the variable tolls are largely unknown. This research examined the long-run changes in driver behavior in an existing variable pricing project in Lee County, Florida. Using empirical evidence, it was found that over time the price elasticities of demand on the Lee County toll bridges have decreased from -0.42 to - 0.11 (Midpoint Memorial Bridge) and from -0.31 to -0.06 (Cape Coral Bridge) during the early morning discount period. The elasticities have decreased, but to a lesser extent, during the late morning and early afternoon discount periods. A discount period volume spreading ratio was also developed to analyze these changes. The results from this analysis confirmed the elasticity results. In addition to the empirical analysis of travel patterns discussed above, a telephone survey of drivers was conducted. The survey results indicated that certain driver characteristics such as higher frequency of trips, commute trip purpose, full-time employment status, more people in the household, higher education, and age between 25-34 years, were all indicators that the participant may increase his or her variable pricing usage over time. Other characteristics, including being retired and having a household income less than $16,000, were indicators that the driver may not increase variable pricing participation. Binary logit and semiparametric models were also developed to examine socio-economic and commute characteristics that may influence a driver increasing his or her participation in a variable pricing program. The results from these two variable toll bridges in Lee County indicated a decrease in variable toll price elasticity over time. However, these results may not be typical for variable pricing projects. Factors such as alternative routes, different traveler demographics, traffic congestion levels, and size of the toll discount may influence the results obtained from other variable pricing projects. However, the methodology developed in this research can be applied to other projects in order to determine those toll price elasticities of demand.

Ernst Toller (1893-1939) wrote a substantial body of poetry which has received negligible critical attention. This thesis argues that the poetic styles he adopted enabled him not only to examine past experiences but also to evolve strategies for the challenges he faced. His early poetry (1908-1915) shows his attempts to come to terms with love and his enthusiasm to participate in the First World War. The poetry provided him with emotional models which were then revised in the light of experience. The early Expressionist poetry (1915-1919) documents his disillusionment with the war and furnishes insights into his growing political awareness. Toller then adopted the sonnet form (1919-1921), principally in order to express the vicissitudes of prison experience in a controlled manner, and this contributed to his adjustment to incarceration. Das Schwalbenbuch (1922-1924) combines this formal control with a growing sensitivity to the potential of Expressionist verse and delivers insights into his metaphysical thinking. Vormorgan (1924) summarises his experience of war, revolution and imprisonment, in verse of considerable richness and suggestivity, indicating the positive values he intended to apply to his life on release. After its publication, Toller practically ceased to write poetry except for a very few isolated examples, one of which ('Am Fluss, an unpublished poem) points to the possibility of a sixth and masterful poetic phase of which, apart from this one poem, there is no record. This study puts forward explanations for the apparent cessation of his poetry writing after 1924, arguing that his lyrical tendencies nonetheless found expression in his writing in other genres. The thesis provides an index of Toller's entire poetic production and a collection of the unpublished poems and those no longer easily accessible.

Stereo camera systems can be utilized for different applications such as position estimation,distance measuring, and 3d modelling. However, this requires the cameras to be calibrated.This paper proposes a traditional calibration solution with Aruco-markers mounted on avehicle to estimate the pose of a stereo camera system in a tolling environment. Our method isbased on Perspective N Point which presumes the intrinsic matrix to be already known. Thegoal is to find each camera’s pose by identifying the marker corners in pixel coordinates aswell as in world coordinates. Our tests show a worst-case error of 21.5 cm and a potential forcentimetre accuracy. It also verifies validity by testing the obtained pose estimation live in thecamera system. The paper concludes that the method has potential for higher accuracy notobtained in our experiment due to several factors. Further work would focus on enlarging themarkers and widening the distance between the markers.

Aquest treball gira entorn a la controvèrsia que, des de finals del segle XIX, va generar el passatge de les Confessions (VIII, 6-12) on Agustí relata la seva crisi decisiva, viscuda a Milà l'estiu de l'any 386, que l'acabaria portant a l'aparent definitiva conversió al cristianisme. Els motius de fons de la controvèrsia són dos de clars. En primer lloc, i a la llum del que nosaltres entenem per gènere autobiogràfic, s'imposa aclarir si un relat com el de les Confessions s'hi pot adscriure, i per tant si ens relata una sèrie d'esdeveniments viscuts per Agustí històricament, o bé si cal interpretar els elements que l'autor desplega al llarg de la narració com a símbols d'un missatge que supera la narració que es troba a la superfície. La segona qüestió, directament vinculada a la primera, és el sentit que cal donar a aquesta conversió en relació a la noció de forma de vida filosòfica, i la influència que tindrà aquesta noció en la biografia i el pensament d'Agustí.
This work analyses the controversy that arises at the end of the XIX century around the passage of Confessions VIII, 6-12 where Augustine reveals his decisive crisis, which took place in Milan during the summer of 386, and that apparently lead him to the definitive conversion to Christianity. The main reasons of the controversy are two. First of all, and in relation of what we understand by autobiographical genre, we need to understand if a narrative like Confessions can be related to autobiography, and so, if this work tells us a chain of events historically lived by Augustine, or if we must interpret the events that the author develops along the narrative as a symbolic whole that stands beyond the surface of the narrative. The second question, directly related to the first one, is the sense we have to give to this conversion in relation to the concept of philosophical form of life, and the influence that this notion will have in Augustine's biography and thought.

The unbalanced traffic flow in the three Road Harbour Crossings (RHCs) connecting Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula is a very serious transportation problem in Hong Kong. A very important question about the toll structures, i.e. how to set the toll for different vehicle types, is raised during the study of the utilization of the three RHCs. Traditionally, the toll structure is determined according to the cost of maintenance contribution. A per axle pricing system is being adopted in many examples in the world. In transportation economics, the toll charge is studied extensively. However, no study has been done on the methodology to determine the optimum toll structure. This dissertation suggests a new methodology to determine the optimum toll structure. It suggests each type of vehicles should pay the same full cost, i.e. monetary cost plus the time cost. Value of time and occupancy are emphasized during the consideration of the time cost of each type of vehicles. As the time cost of the vehicles varies with the congestion level, the optimum toll structure depends on the congestion level of the road. This dissertation investigates the factors affecting the demand and supply of the RHCs. They are used to predict the total travel time and social welfare under different toll structures. It shows the suggested methodology can maximize the social welfare generated from the tunnel. Optimum toll for CHT is found using the suggested methodology. Optimum toll for EHC and WHC after their franchises expire in 2016 and 2023 are also found. Recommendations are also made in this dissertation to reduce the possible objections from the general public due to the toll adjustments.

For Whom the Bell Tolls is Ernest Hemingway's story of the Spanish Civil War. This war has often been seen as a conflict between good and evil, and the novel is frequently viewed as a way of illustrating the brotherhood of man in its portrayal of how Robert Jordan fights as a volunteer for the republicans against the fascists. This essay shows that Jordan actually loses his faith in the war. I instead propose that his determination to perform his mission is regained through Maria, and that he integrates with her as he finishes his mission. Initially, Jordan becomes alienated because he discovers the hopelessness and immorality of the republican struggle. The fascists are really not true enemies, and the republicans seem to have become the very evil that they originally set out to destroy. His faith in his mission is regained through Maria, and the completion of his mission becomes entwined with his integration with her. It becomes clear that she, a character whose thematic importance has often been neglected, is a part of the natural world. By becoming a part of nature, Jordan can thus become an eternal part of her. As he finishes his mission, his integration with nature intensifies. As he awaits death after having finished his mission, he literally becomes a part of nature and thematically a part of Maria, and even though he will die, the lovers are united. This, I suggest, is the complete integration that Jordan experiences.
