Abstract:
In this paper, I present some directives concerning the ethical use of speech and conversation. I focus on three areas – linguistics, philosophy and religion – and moral rules elaborated there with regard to what should and what should not be revealed by words. From the point of view of linguistics, I analyse modern principles of politeness and maxims of conversation. From the point of view of philosophical reflection, I consider ancient ethics of speech, and in particular: the three sieves of Socrates, rhetoric (lat. ars bene dicendi), and the Aristotelian golden mean. From the point of view of religion, I show the moral rules for words in Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Confucianism, and the Toltec faith.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThis article advances a new account of Kant’s views on conceptualism. On the one hand, I argue that Kant was a nonconceptualist. On the other hand, my approach accommodates many motivations underlying the conceptualist reading of his work: for example, it is fully compatible with the success of the Transcendental Deduction. I motivate my view by providing a new analysis of both Kant’s theory of perception and of the role of categorical synthesis: I look in particular at the categories of quantity. Locating my interpretation in relation to recent research by Allais, Ginsborg, Tolley and others, I argue that it offers an attractive compromise on this important theoretical and exegetical issue.

Abstract:
This Article examines how the metaphors in judicial opinions reveal judicial theories of lawmaking and judicial philosophies. It does so through a close reading of Justice Ginsburg’s majority opinion and Justice Gorsuch’s dissenting opinion in Artis v. District of Columbia, 138 S. Ct. 594 (2018).
Artis was about what the phrase “shall be tolled” means in the federal supplemental jurisdiction statute, 28 U.S.C. §1367. Does it pause the statute of limitations while a state-law claim is in federal court or keep it running? In holding that Congress used “stop the clock” tolling, an “off-the-shelf” legal device that pauses the statute of limitations, Justice Ginsburg’s majority opinion uses conventional, mechanistic metaphors. Justice Gorsuch’s dissent uses more elaborate, agrarian metaphors to argue that Congress used a stricter “grace period” version of tolling because “[w]hen Congress replants the roots of preexisting law in the federal code, this Court assumes it brings with it the surrounding soil.”
This Article shows that Justice Ginsburg’s mechanistic metaphors describe lawmaking like engineering and bespeak a mode of judicial interpretation based on purpose and precedent—while Justice Gorsuch’s agrarian metaphors hark back to a pastoral conception of lawmaking and interpretation “rooted” in a mythical common-law history and tradition. It then compares Justice Ginsburg’s moreunderstated use of conventional metaphors to Justice Gorsuch’s more performative metaphorical technique, arguing that their different rhetorical strategies reflect their different visions of lawmaking and interpretive philosophies. And it closes by showing how close attention to the metaphors theyuse can reveal the flaws in each approach.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Recently David Best has advanced the claim that sport is not an art form, and that although sport may be aesthetic, it is not artistic. Such a claim is false and runs counter to ordinary usage and sport practice. On behalf of sport practice, let me cite as an example the world-class Canadian skater, Toller Cranston, who thinks there are such things as ‘artistic sports, those being gymnastics, diving, figure skating’. (I might add trampolining and power- or weight-lifting to this category.) Best claims that athletes like Cranston are conceptually confused and that they endow sport with greater respectability than should be allowed. Ascribing the predicate ‘artistic’ to sport performances reflects ‘barbarous usage’. Why does Best exclude the artistic from the realm of sport? Upon examination of his argument, one finds that this exclusion derives mainly from his concepts of art and sport. He thinks that art has a subject-matter, a content, and that sport does not. Sport is contentless, so ‘sport’ and ‘art’ are two logically distinct regions. But is this so? Are we to accept Best's argument or are we to listen to accomplished, reflective athletes in the area of artistic sports? It seems the most reasonable analytic procedure would be to listen to Cranston's case and decide whether such a piece of intentionalist criticism5 should override Best's premises.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This work analyses the controversy that arises at the end of the XIX century around the passage of Confessions VIII, 6-12 where Augustine reveals his decisive crisis, which took place in Milan during the summer of 386, and that apparently lead him to the definitive conversion to Christianity. The main reasons of the controversy are two. First of all, and in relation of what we understand by autobiographical genre, we need to understand if a narrative like Confessions can be related to autobiography, and so, if this work tells us a chain of events historically lived by Augustine, or if we must interpret the events that the author develops along the narrative as a symbolic whole that stands beyond the surface of the narrative. The second question, directly related to the first one, is the sense we have to give to this conversion in relation to the concept of philosophical form of life, and the influence that this notion will have in Augustine's biography and thought.

Atkins, Joseph B. "The Musician and Philosopher." In Harry Dean Stanton. University Press of Kentucky, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5810/kentucky/9780813180106.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores Harry Dean Stanton's music and philosophy of life, both very important in understanding him. Music had always been important, an inheritance from his family. His role as the guitar-playing Tramp in Cool Hand Luke (1967) introduced him to many moviegoers both as an actor and a musician. After decades on screen, he confessed to musician and close friend Jamie James that he had a dream of leading a band. He realized that dream in bands that performed everything from old standards to Mexican ballads at venues such as The Mint and The Troubadour. Sometimes both musician and philosopher were on stage, as when Harry Dean asked an incredulous James to stop playing and allow silence to work its magic. Harry Dean had early on rejected the Christian fundamentalism of rural Kentucky and turned toward the teachings of Zen Buddhism, ancient philosophers like Lao Tzu, and modern-day thinkers like Jiddu Krishnamurti, Alan Watts, and Eckhart Tolle. Alex Cox saw "utter mishmash" in Harry Dean's frequent philosophical musings, but others like Ed Begley Jr. said Harry Dean changed their lives by helping them focus more on the present than on the past or the future.

Abstract:
This chapter looks to provide a more thorough account than has yet been offered of how far, and to what ends, Friedrich Nietzsche’s sceptical ‘realism’ was fashioned with an eye on Cynic styles of argument. Starting with the reappearance of Diogenes of Sinope in The Gay Science, it explores the histrionic characterization of der tolle Mensche and his ‘untimeliness’ in ways that open up Nietzsche’s sense of the typology and stylistic gambits of Cynicism as helpful but inadequate models for the lived practice of philosophy. The focus then moves to how Cynicism helps to drive Nietzsche’s thinking in two main respects: first, his attempts to articulate what may be required to be ‘free-spirited’ in one’s philosophizing and fashion a philosophical style in the assumption of that freedom; and, second, the important role of Cynicism in the articulation of the genealogy of morality.

Sia, S. "Operation of Gas Lift Compressor Without Discharge Cooler in Handil Field – Pertamina Hulu Mahakam." In Indonesian Petroleum Association - 46th Annual Convention & Exhibition 2022. Indonesian Petroleum Association, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.29118/ipa22-f-149.

Full text
Abstract:
Handil is a mature oil field in Mahakam Block which has been producing for more than 45 years. Following its depletion challenge, more than 90% of Handil’s oil production relies mainly on gas lift, which is circulated from Compressor in the process area. The HEOR (Handil Enhanced Oil Recovery) Compressor is one of the compressors used to supply gas lift in Handil field. HEOR is equipped with two air coolers, namely the interstage cooler (E-5550) and discharge cooler (E-5530). Based on inspection findings, the discharge cooler E-5530 is leaking and out of service. Consequently, HEOR compressor cannot be operated, thereby reducing the rate of gas lift to field and resulting to lower oil production from Handil field. Further study was then carried out to review the feasibility of running the HEOR compressor without its discharge cooler (discharge cooler operation by-passed). Several efforts were performed to ensure the process safety condition as follows: Jumper line size to ensure the deliverability of gas lift rate. The existing 6” jumper line with a rating 1500# is capable to deliver 48 MMscfd with potential debottlenecking to 8” line with a capacity of 86 MMscfd; Stress analysis on piping & pipeline is performed to review the impact of increasing temperature; Water condensation study along the pipeline discharge cooler to check the Top of Line Corrosion (ToLC) issue; Corrosion mitigations with sampling liquid (e.g. pH analysis) and corrosion monitoring requirement (e.g. routine UT measurement at critical sections and chemical injection on critical points as per sampling result); Field trial of the by-pass discharge cooler by utilizing existing configuration were carried out to examine the temperature profile along the pipeline and its impact on the performance of HEOR compressor. The new philosophy of running HEOR compressor without discharge cooler was successfully implemented in the Handil field. The modification is succeeded to boost oil production up to 2,000 bopd thanks to great collaboration among engineering, production method, and site Operation team. All efforts from engineering studies up to implementation in the field are a good lesson learns that can be implemented to other oil and gas field.
