Full textIn this work, we suggest a collection of novel models for the representation of music. These models are endowed with two main features. First, they originate from a topological and geometrical inspiration; second, their low dimensionality allows to build simple and informative visualisations. We tackle the problem of music representation following three non-orthogonal directions. First, we propose an interpretation of counterpoint as a multivariate time series of partial permutation matrices, whose observations are characterised by a degree of complexity. After providing both a static and a dynamic representation of counterpoint, voice leadings are reinterpreted as a special class of partial singular braids, and their main features are visualised. Thereafter, we give a topological interpretation of the Tonnetz (a graph commonly used in computational musicology), whose vertices are deformed by both a harmonic and a consonance-oriented function. The shapes derived from these deformations are classified using the formalism of persistent homology. Thus, this novel representation of music is evaluated on a collection of heterogenous musical datasets. Finally, a combination of the two approaches is proposed. A model at the crossroad between the signal and symbolic analysis of music uses multiple sequences alignment to provide an encompassing, novel viewpoint on the musical inspiration transfer among compositions belonging to different artists, genres and time. Then, music is represented as a time series of topological fingerprints, allowing the comparison of pairs of time-varying shapes in both topological and musical terms

Full textThis thesis presents a generalizations of the neo-Riemannian PLR-group, that acts on the set of 24 major and minor triads. The work begins with a reconstruction on the history of the Tonnetz, a graph associated with the three transformations that generate the PLR-group. The thesis presents two generalizations of the PLR-group for seventh chords. The first one acts on the set of dominant, minor, semi-diminished, major and diminished sevenths, the second one also includes minor major, augmented major, augmented, dominant seventh flat five. We considered the most parsimonious operations exchanging two types of sevenths, moving a single note by a semitone or a whole tone. We also classified the most parsimonious transformations among the 4 types of triads (major, minor, augmented and diminished) and studied the group generated by them. Finally, we have introduced a general approach to define parsimonious operations between sevenths and triads, but also the operations already known between triads and those between sevenths

Full textMusical symbolic representations and spatial computing. The notion of symbolic space is frequently used in music theory, analysis and composition. Representing sequences in pitch (or chord) spaces, like the Tonnetz, enables to catch some harmonic and melodic properties that elude traditional representation systems. We generalize this approach by rephrasing in spatial terms different musical purposes (style recognition, melodic and harmonic transformations, all-interval series classification, etc.). Spaces are formalized as topological collections, a notion corresponding with the label- ling of a cellular complex in algebraic topology. A cellular complex enables the discrete representation of a space through a set of topological cells linked by specific neighborhood relationships. We represent simple musical objects (for example pitches or chords) by cells and build a complex by organizing them following a particular neighborhood relationship defined by a musical property. A musical sequence is represented in a complex by a trajectory. The look of the trajectory reveals some informations concerning the style of the piece, and musical strategies used by the composer. Spaces and trajectories are computed with MGS, an experimental programming language dedicated to spatial computing, that aims at introducing the notion of space in computation. A tool, HexaChord, has been developped in order to facilitate the use of these notions for a predefined set of musical spaces

Full textGrand unification theories are a possible extension of the stan~ dard model. These theories imply the existence of an extra gauge boson, Z'. The study of the parameters of this boson in its electronic decays, especially its width, needs a good uniformity and a good resolution of the electroma- gnetic calorimeter. The first part of this thesis is dedicated to the study of the response of the barrel of the electromagnetic calorimeter to a 245 GeV electron beam. The major part of this work was the measurement of the uni- formity. To perform this analysis the search of problematic channel has been made and corrections have been developed to take into account effect from the detector and to use aIl the recorded events. I~ the second part, 1 have studied the potential of ATLAS in the study of the Z' decaying into lepton pairs (mainly in electron pairs). A study of the kinematic and of the back~ ground has been firstly performed. This analysis deals with the possibility to distinguish différent grand unification models, and with the possibility to discover the Z' boson, for masses from 1 TeV up to 4 TeV

Full textCell morphogenesis is crucial to plant development and depends on the cytoskeleton, especially the microtubule arrays. Study of Arabidopsis thaliana mutants with altered microtubule arrays not only allows to identify the molecular mechanisms governing their organization, but also provides further understanding of how these arrays control cell morphogenesis, and thus plant morphogenesis. We have studied the tonneau mutants (ton1 and ton2), which exhibit profound morphological alterations resulting from defective organization of two plant-specific microtubule arrays: the preprophase band and the interphase cortical array. The ton1 mutation disrupts two similar genes encoding 30 kDa proteins that are highly conserved among higher plants and associate to the interphase microtubular cytoskeleton. The gene affected by the ton2 mutation codes for a putative regulatory subunit of a type-2A protein phosphatase. .

Full textThis study deals with verse or formal satire and prose or Menippean satire. Our starting point is Hudibras by Samuel Butler (1612-80) and A Tale of a tub by Jonathan Swift (1667-1745). A comparison between both satirists showed that they agree on the major points. A previous study of the two modes of writing, verse and prose, determining the characteristics and functions of each one had been undertaken. The thematic analysis revealed that both satires tackled almost the same subjects, namely the abuses of religion and learning, but also politics, science and the society at large; both satires being topical before reaching a universal level through the study of man in general. This is part of the strategy adopted by Menippean satire. The analysis of Hudibras and the tale from this angle allowed us to understand and explain a number of obscure points. For although butler wrote in verse and swift in prose, both used the characteristics of Menippean satire, which is mainly concerned with ideologies besides particular vices and goes against all conventions; its sole purpose being questioning, even its own vehicle

Full textThe start up of the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC is planned for the year 2007. The physics program of the experiment covers a wide field, going from tests of Standard Model (Higgs boson discovery) to new theories beyond the SM (Supersymmetry, extra. Dimensions. . . Etc). The work presented in this thesis returns within the framework of preparation to the starting of this experiment. After having presented the 2004 combined run, its installation, pedestal data and calibration data analysis, we develop a method for calibrating the energy measurement based on Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation of the combined run. These simulations are done in the general framework developed for the analysis of the ATLAS data. We present then the performance studies of the electromagnetic calorimeter as well as the results obtained: a sampling term of the energy resolution of 10. 6% GeV0. 5 and local constant term of 0. 43%, a non-uniformity of response of 0. 44% giving a total constant term of 0. 6% and a linearity better than 0. 2% for electrons energies between 20 and 250 GeV. Concerning the "physics" side of this thesis, we show a first study on the determination of the effective weak mixing angle, sin²"theta"lepteff with one precision better than the current results, ~10-4. To reach such a precision it will be necessary to identify the electrons in the forward regions of the detector. This point is the subject of the last part of this manuscript, it shows that one can reach an electron-jet rejection of 100 with an efficiency of the electrons reconstruction of 50%, by using a discriminating analysis based on the methods of Fisher, the likelihood and the neural networks

Full textThe Standard Model is the theory which describes the fundamental interactions most accurately. However, the Higgs mechanism and its associated boson have not yet been discovered. The ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter will play an important role in its discovery if it exists. In the first part of this work, a final mapping of all barrel electromagnetic calorimeter cells, and in particular the problematic ones, was made. Then, the code for the calorimeter calibration was migrated into the ATLAS software environment (ATHENA), where it was tested and validated with the 2004 test beam data. In this code, the optimal filtering coefficients, which enable to reconstruct the energy deposited in the calorimeter while minimizing the electronic and pile-up noises, are calculated. For this, a model was developed to predict the physics signal waveform from the calibration waveform. In a third part, two algorithms for reconstructing and identifying τ leptons in their hadronic decay mode were studied and compared. Finally in a fourth part, amongst the most important Standard Model Higgs production and decay channel was investigated, namely the weak boson fusion production followed by the Higgs decay into a tau lepton pair, for a low mass Higgs (115 < mHiggs < 145 GeV/c2). This study was performed for 30 fb-1 of integrated luminosity using fast and fully simulated data. A study of the dominant background Z + n jets (n ≤ 5) was also performed

Full textThe Rhone River, in conjunction with its tributary the Saone River, form an axis of penetration inside the Gaul used during the Roman period to link the Mediterranean sea to the north of the empire. Short land connections enabled the trades to flourish over the basins of the Loire, the Seine, the Rhine and the alpine lakes. Short land connections have allowed the pursuit of the trades over the basins of the Loire, the Seine, the Rhine and the alpine lakes. Only the southwest quarter seems to have escaped the influence of the Rhone. This corridor formed the major artery of the Gallic river network, even before the Roman conquest. The waterway at the time was the primary means for transporting goods inland, up until the arrival of the railway. The Rhône and Saone rivers alone would have conveyed nearly half of river traffic of all Gaul. These waterways have also clearly contributed to the development of riverside towns often corresponding to river stops and points of cargo redistribution. The interest of the subject is of paramount importance. The intention of this work is threefold. First, provide an overview of the navigation of the Rhone and the Saone as evidenced by series of discoveries of the 2000s (Lyon and Arles wrecks) ; then disprove two commonly held misconceptions of the Roman "landlubber": the use of archaic navigation technique and the ease of the river environment. Finally, the main intention is to show the specifics of navigation on the Rhone and Saone in Roman times. This will be covered in three parts. A first part related to the navigation parameters (goods, packaging, crafts, corporations, river environment) to identify in detail the characteristics and issues related to each of them. A second part is dedicated to given navigation conditions : weather, boat morphology (draft, air-draft), dynamic conditions (possible propulsions), legal and religious conditions, risk of attack, etc. Based on the navigation parameters and navigation conditions presented, the last part describes the possibilities of navigation that were offered at that period. It is a tool to simulate transport situations. The reader has the option to "compose" a transport scenario by selecting the parameters of the first part, and by confronting them to the navigation conditions of the fluvial axis defined in the second part. In the end, it is possible to to give answers to several questions such as the use of oar or sail against the current, the possible drafts that could be used, the presence of marine ships or dolia ships upstream of Arles, the most favorable conditions to barge navigation, the speed or travel time

This thesis is centered on John Towner Williams’s (b. 1932) music composed for the movie Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980). It concentrates on extra-diegetic music, that is, music that originates outside the fictional world where the story takes place. The interest for this repertoire originates in its conception, which is based on classical Hollywood film scores, specifically in its high degree of correspondence with narrative content. This study proposes an analysis of pitch organization (chords, strata in a multi-layer texture) and seeks to establish the narrative connections that the music maintains with the image throughout selected scenes. Rather than relying on traditional tools drawn from functional or Schenkerian approaches, here analysis borrows from the theoretical method of Neo-Riemannian theories such as transformations and Tonnetz. These are used in a conventional way, but also as representations of harmonic spaces capable of encompassing broader musical events aside from simple triadic progressions. For example, they may represent motives, or the connections between the different strata comprised in a layered texture. This allows musical material to unfold through the diatonic, hexatonic or octatonic axis from the Tonnetz. Furthermore, the reiteration of particular transformations suggests harmonic spaces that establish the identity of thematic material in a way similar to that of orchestration or scales. Finally, because this type of soundtrack is punctuated by frequent breaks and changes, we will consider its construction throughout multiples shifts between harmonic spaces.

By adapting the theory first developed by Jonathan Pinto, Carrie Leana and Frits Pil, it shows that the most common type of corruption is not individual but organizational and spreads through political parties. More precisely, the case studies are used to compare the phenomena of Corrupt Organization (CO) and Organization of Corrupt Individuals (OCI), respectively. In Romania, the two types coexist. However, due to its extent and strength revealed by the case studies, the phenomenon of Corrupt Organization in its manifestation within political parties has more negative consequences on the economic and political development as well as on the European integration of the country.

Abstract In Taiwan, long-line fishing has been the major technique in fishery. With the enhancement of fishing techniques, the fishing zone of Taiwan has spread all over three of World Oceans, and Taiwan has been regarded as one of five largest pelagic fishing countries. Pelagic long-line fishery plays a crucial role in economic development in Taiwan. In recent years, the fishery environments, whether in domestic or foreign fishing zone, have been dramatically changing. Since the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea has been resulted, all of coastal nations have subsequently set up the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) or marine economic development zone, which is stretched out 200 nautical miles from a nation’s coast. However, the establishment of marine economic development zone also brings about the high seas’ largely shrinking. Since the past, the increasing extinction of fish species is mainly resulted from illegal fishing techniques, fishing in the fishing-prohibited zone or during the prohibited period, catching fingerlings and using illegitimate fishing gear. Under such a decreasing fishing circumstance, those Taiwanese long-line fishing vessels under 100 tonnes, mostly fishing in the South Pacific Ocean, are struggling with many changes, such as international fishing limitation, the fishing vessels decreasing policy, the diminishing amount of fish caused by climate changes, the raising oil price and cost. Respecting the situation that most of long-line fishing vessels are managed by ship owners instead of fishery companies, and the fishing-related records are too scarce to provide for reference, this research will explore how the 100-tonne-under long-line fishing vessels owners can manage their business in South Pacific Ocean. All information in this study is acquired from Fisheries Agency in Taiwan and interviews with long-line fishing vessels owners. The questions asked in those interviews mainly target fishing benefit, cost, method of supplies, and the policy on captain and crew management. Based on the analysis of those cases mentioned above, we can figure out the practical operation and management of the 100-tonne-under long-line fishing vessels owners in Taiwan. Furthermore, this study also points out current difficulties in fishery management, providing for those vessels owners as the crucial reference of increasing competitive advantages.
