Abstract:
According to the Russian Primary Chronicle, when St. Anthony settled in his cave near Kiev, people joined him and he tonsured them as monks. We know, however, that in certain cases he did not tonsure the newcomers but sent them to be tonsured by a priest (hieromonk). Obviously St. Anthony was not a priest. Why, then, in some cases did he do it himself and yet in other cases, he did not? If he was not a priest, how could he tonsure people? The author of the present article attempts to answer these and similar questions with reference to historical, philological, and liturgical data. The article

Monastic tonsure of citizens of the Russian Empire abroad became a particularly complex issue during the latter half of the nineteenth century, when Mt. Athos became a favorite destination of those interested in assuming the monastic habit outside the empire. The Russian authorities sought to control and regulate such tonsures by establishing procedures for checking their validity, and by ruling out automatic recognition of them in the empire. Individuals who were tonsured as monks abroad manipulated or tried to manipulate such regulations in order to facilitate travel back and forth from the

This paper describes a rare rite of female tonsure that is known from five Slavonic Euchologia (Trebnik) of the 13th–16th centuries and attempts to investigate on the basis of historical sources how this rite of tonsure could be applied in the Balkans and in Early Russia. N. F. Krasnosel′tsev suggested that this tonsure was of a very ancient origin and was intended for tonsuring virgins who took the vow of celibacy. The Greek original of this rite is preserved only in one known Euchologion Coisl.213 (1027). We argue that its Slavonic translation is of a Serbian origin and was made not earlier

There were two ways of the clerical tonsure in the Orthodox Church during the middle Ages. The cutting of four locks of hair in the shape of cross and circular tonsure. The wreath of hair around the shaved top of the head symbolized Christ?s crown of thorns. The archpriests of the Serbian Orthodox Church were practicing circular tonsure, from its founder Sava until the middle of the 17th century.

The features of the species composition of diatoms from the Ancient and New Azov deposits of the Sea of Azov were studied. For New Azov deposits, the dominance of several taxa was revealed: species and varieties of Actinocyclus octonarius, Actinoptychus senarius, resting spores of the genus Chaetoceros spp., Thalassiosira decipience. Actinocyclus octonarius var. tonsure and A. pseudopodolicus should be considered indicator taxa, which mark the Novoazovsk layers. The Ancient Azov layers are characterized by a significant decrease in the abundance of A. octonarius, the absence of such taxa as A.

Abstract:
This dissertation provides the first full-scale musicological study of Stuttgart 95, a thirteenth-century song book, formerly thought to be from the abbey of Weingarten. Upon further examination, it is clear that rather than a single unified corpus of Latin songs, the musical portions are composed of three separate layers. Furthermore, I argue that these layers were best understood as separate entities. This delineation between writing campaigns indicates that the original musical project likely constitutes a mostly intact collection, with only one or two folios missing from the beginning of t
