Recent Broadway theatre seasons consistently saw record-breaking numbers of admissions and grosses, with musicals’ ticket sales making up 78–89% of annual Broadway grosses. The annual Tony Awards continue to serve as an influential theatre industry establishment that helps define a Broadway musical as exceptional and worthy of audiences, especially the awarding of the ‘Best Musical’ category (which can statistically have a profound impact on a production’s longevity). This article offers comprehensive surveying and discussions of significant components of a musical’s initial Broadway success i

This was the legal position in Australia from the reception of English law until well after federation. Digital writing and handwriting are cognitively different activities; thus, it is interesting to verify what happens to the written language when it is conveyed through a keyboard and no longer a pen. On the Net, where the text is stripped of all non-strictly linguistic clues such as tone of voice, facial expression, proxemics, gestures, etc., written words assume a large part of the communicative burden: in other words, we are what we type. Despite this, it often seems that users are not fully aware of how much their linguistic choices affect the construction of their reputation on the net. In this contribution, we reflect on the current state of the typed Italian, trying to hypothesize some future strategies to improve the condition of millions of novice and unprepared users.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Ajaokuta Steel Project has been a widely visible symbol of Nigerian industrialization through steel production for 50 years. At the writing of this book, at least $5 billion have been spent, and a workforce of 3000 people live and work on site to maintain it, but not one ton of steel has been produced. The project started as an ambitious industrialization project in 1971, awarded to a Soviet contractor. After delays from limited financial and manpower capacity, it was stopped by a new government in 1983 under corruption charges and lay fallow for 17 years. In 2000, civilian President Obasanjo restarted the project that he had initiated in 1971 as military president, now in a public–private partnership (PPP) scheme. But this again fell apart because of corruption charges and then lawsuits from the firm that had purchased the licence and did not want to be pushed out. Today, the government is looking for a new private partner. The case also discusses the fundamental question of whether the idea of industrialization through steel (rather than other technologies) is still sufficiently relevant to justify the reviving of equipment that was designed 40 years ago.

If Perry now functions as a platform onto himself, his career began with seemingly much less broad, but no less significant, aspirations. In her analysis of taste, class, and the popular, in Chapter TwoRashida D. Shaw places Tyler Perry’s career within the context of a Black performance and theatre history that extends back to the nineteenth century, as she centralizes the history of the “Chitlin Circuit” or “Urban Theatre.” After establishing a literary cultural history that frames and restages the popularity, appeal, and reception of Perry’s plays, Shaw’s analysis more closely explores the ramifications of Perry’s behind-the-scenes role and onstage presence at the 2012 Tony Awards during a year that resulted in numerous historic successes for not only African American theatre-makers, but also for African American–centric productions in general.

Abstract:
The call for a separate Research Council for humanities was initially met with unfavourable comment. Although the government eventually announced support for the creation of such a research council, it was only after lengthy deliberations that the Dearing Report recommendations were finally granted, hence creating the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). This chapter discusses the early years of the AHRC. During these years, the funding of the ARHC was under the prerogative of the Higher Education Funding Council of England (HEFCE). The Funding Council was then initiating new models of funding institutions of higher education and the AHRC was generally given less funding. This neglect of the funding of AHRC discouraged humanities scholars to entail directed research. In 1998, the British Academy through Tony Wrigley asked for additional funds from the HEFCE. Upon the commencement of its official existence, the AHRC with its first chief executive Paul Langford prepared the new Board, planned the creation of the research awards department, and planned the integration of the postgraduate awards section in the British Academy within the overall structure of the new organisation. This new organisation was driven by the goal to improve the breadth and depth of the knowledge and understanding of human culture in the past and in the present and thereby enhance the quality of life and the creative output of the nation.

This chapter examines Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men and Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man in the context of their winning of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, respectively. While considering the authors’ resistance to reading overt political commentary in their work, favoring a moral reading instead, the chapter argues that their insistence dovetails with the purpose of such large, national literary prizes: to reward works that best demonstrate the values important to the nation. Therefore, literary prizes such as the Pulitzer and National Book Award, as well as other cultural prizes (such as the Grammys, Academy Awards, Tonys, and Emmys) reveal themselves in the context of the Cold War to be awards that reinforce and reward correct ideological perspectives in the guise of good, democratic art.

Abstract:
While Tony Harrison’s career as a poet was perhaps inevitable by the early 1970s with the publication of his award winning volume The Loiners (1970), this chapter argues that it was not a given that a significant portion of Harrison’s poetic output would be for the stage, nor that the British Theatre would readily welcome a contemporary poet writing verse plays. I argue that Harrison’s career in the theatre was fostered by his early commissions from the National Theatre and the collaborators he worked with in those early years, especially director John Dexter. Their work together on Harrison’s translations/adaptations of two seventeenth-century French plays—Molière’s Le Misanthrope (1666) and Racine’s Phèdre (1677), staged as The Misanthrope (1973) and Phaedra Britannica (1975)—allowed Harrison to bring to bear on his theatrical translations for the modern stage the ideas that he had been exploring in his doctoral thesis on Vergil and translation. Moreover, the close involvement of Harrison from commission to production served to reinforce his belief that writing for the stage and the page are very different things, with theatrical texts needing to facilitate a three dimensional performance. This would shape the nature of Harrison’s dramatic verse for decades to come. The success of The Misanthrope, which critics praised for the brilliance of its translation, was essential in establishing the claim of contemporary poets to a place on the modern British stage.

What happens in the transitional zone between a mass of accumulated historical research and the shaped, written text that follows as its distillation? Which is closer to the essence of history: the research or the writing? Isaiah Berlin set the same question in his essay on Tolstoy, “The Hedgehog and the Fox,” where the former knows one big thing and the latter many things. How bring these two creatures together? Berlin set the question but did not exactly answer it. Two almost exactly contemporary historians, Tony Judt on modern Europe and Michael O’Brien on the US South, have given us history writing that explores the tricky borderland between history and writing history. Both leave traces—Judt in Postwar and other works, O’Brien in Conjectures of Order and his earlier work—of actively taking Berlin’s observation to heart and mind. Their responses to the fox/hedgehog dilemma energize their work and our reading by keeping us constantly aware of the creative tension between event and the reporting of event.
