Abstract:
In this interlude, the author talks about some of her fellow ballroom dancers at the Regent Ballroom and Banquet Center. She begins with Tony and Sarah, one of the many “empty-nester” couples who arrive at the Regent hoping to reconnect now that their children are grown and gone. When they are on the dance floor, you can see them exchanging gestures of affection and sweetness. Next is Doris, a divorced, independent, small-business owner who runs a seamstress shop from her home. The author then turns to Marty, a middle-aged dentist who says nothing before, during, or after his dance with the author; Don, a computer programmer who works for another ballroom dancer; and Laurie, a lawyer who also competes at the national level in amateur dance competitions with William as her partner. William, one of the most accomplished dancers at the Regent, invites her to dance the rumba.

Abstract:
At the heart of America’s slave system was the legal definition of people as property. While property ownership is a cornerstone of the American dream, the status of enslaved people supplies a contrasting American nightmare. This book considers how writers in works from 19th slave narratives to 21st century poetry employ gothic tools, such as ghosts and haunted houses, to portray the horrors of this nightmare. Out of all of slavery’s perils, the definition of people as property is the central impetus for haunting because it allows the perpetration of all of the other terrors. Property becomes the engine for the white accumulation of wealth and power fueled by the destruction of black personhood. Specters often linger, however, to claim title, and haunting can be a bid for property ownership. Through examining works by Harriet Jacobs, Hannah Crafts, Mark Twain, Herman Melville, Sherley Anne Williams, William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Toni Morrison, Octavia Butler, and Natasha Trethewey, this study reveals how writers can use the gothic to combat legal possession with spectral possession. The book thus reimagines the southern gothic, which has too often been simply equated with the macabre or grotesque and then dismissed as regional. Instead, gothic tales of slavery are the very distillation of the anxieties about race and property located in the larger American literary tradition.

Beaman, Lori G. Conclusion. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198803485.003.0007.

Abstract:
Drawing on a range of sources including the animated film of William Kentridge, Kenneth Gergen’s work on complex futures and the role of social scientists, and Tony Kushner’s play Angels in America, the conclusion of this book illustrates the multiple vectors of deep equality. It also addresses obstacles to the achievement of deep equality, including critiques that deep equality is utopian and naïve. Other obstacles include the persuasive power of the dominant narrative of competition and the seductive power of law. Acknowledging the fragility of deep equality, the author argues that the next challenge on the horizon in terms of living well together in diversity is not religious diversity but the increasing polarization between those who self-describe as ‘none’ and those who claim a religious identity.

Abstract:
The transition between the reigns of Charles II and James II brought controversy, with an openly practicing Catholic on the throne, the Duke of Monmouth’s rebellion, and the consolidation of the Whig and Tory parties in Parliament. Poets and dramatists responded to these national events. while also dealing with increasing attempts by both court and clergy such as Jeremy Collier to reform the libertine court and stage. A new generation of dramatists appeared, including William Congreve, Thomas Southerne, and the so-called Female Wits, Delarivier Manley, Mary Pix, and CatharineTrotter.

Coyer, Megan. The Rise of Public Health in the Popular Periodical Press: The Political Medicine of W. P. Alison, Robert Gooch, and Robert Ferguson. Edinburgh University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474405607.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the construction of the ‘political medicine’ of William Pulteney Alison (1790–1859) and Robert Gooch (1784–1830) and its development and popular dissemination through Blackwood’s. This humanistic ‘political medicine’ critiqued liberal political economists and utilitarianism and promoted the importance of moral feelings and Christian sentiments in informing public health policy. Alison’s contribution to the debates regarding poor law reform and Gooch’s proposal for a religious order of nurses – a project supported by his friend Robert Southey – are discussed as components within a progressive Tory social medicine. By way of contrast, the chapter closes with an examination of Robert Ferguson (1799–1865), the key medical contributor to the Quarterly Review from 1829 to 1854. Although Ferguson also contributed to what David Roberts terms ‘the social conscience of Tory periodicals’, writing on issues relevant to public health and promoting a paternalistic approach, his writings more clearly reflect the counter-revolutionary agenda of the Quarterly, as opposed to the more explicit humanism of Blackwood’s.

Sandy, Mark. Transatlantic Transformations of Romanticism. Edinburgh University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474421485.001.0001.

Abstract:
This book presents innovative readings of literary works of British Romanticism and its influence on twentieth- and twenty-first-century American literary culture and thought. It traverses the traditional critical boundaries of prose and poetry in American and Romantic and post-Romantic writing. Analysing significant works by nineteenth-century writers, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau and Emily Dickinson, as well as the later writings of William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Saul Bellow, Toni Morrison and Wallace Stevens, the book reasserts the significance of second-generation Romantic writers for American literary culture. Sandy reassesses our understanding of Romantic inheritance and influence on post-Romantic aesthetics, subjectivity and the natural world in the American imagination.

Richards, Jennifer. Voices and Books in the English Renaissance. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198809067.001.0001.

Abstract:
Two ideas lie at the heart of this study and its claim that we need a new history of reading: that voices in books can affect us deeply; that printed books can be brought to life with the voice. Voices and Books offers a new history of reading focused on the oral and voice-aware silent reader, rather than the historical reader we have privileged in the last few decades, who is invariably male, silent, and alone. It recovers the vocality of education for boys and girls in Renaissance England, and the importance of training in pronuntiatio (delivery) for oral-aural literary culture. It offers the first attempt to recover the voice—and tone—from textual sources. It explores what happens when we bring voice to text, how vocal tone realizes or changes textual meaning, and how the literary writers of the past tried to represent their own and others’ voices, as well as manage and exploit the voices of their readers. It offers fresh readings of the key Tudor authors who anticipated oral readers: John Bale, Anne Askew, William Baldwin, Thomas Nashe. And it aims to rethink what a printed book can be, searching the printed page for vocal cues, and exploring the neglected role of the voice in the printing process.

Abstract:
This chapter turns from a historical account of the development of the US literature of experience and the Latin American literature of reading to a textual analysis of the US and Latin American historical novel. Hemispheric/inter-American scholars often cite William Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom! (1936), Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967), and Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon (1977) as exemplifying instances of literary borrowing across the North–South divide. As I demonstrate, however, each of the later texts also realigns its predecessor’s historical imaginary according to the dominant logics of the US and Latin American literary fields. Whereas the American works foreground experiential models of reconstructing the past and conveying knowledge across generations, García Márquez’s Latin American novel presents reading as the fundamental mode of comprehending and transmitting history.

Cruise had erred in charging the arrested men solely on the evidence of an accomplice (McGlynn), and the recantation of McHugh had then further weakened the case against them. With the exception of McHugh, the prisoners were released on bail at the July assizes to stand trial the following March. Then, five men—McHugh, John Breslin, William Maxwell, James Gallagher, and Cormac Gillespie—were convicted and sentenced to twenty months with hard labour; McHugh’s conviction was soon overturned on appeal. The case garnered considerable press attention, with the involvement of national teachers in the Molly Maguires drawing much negative comment in Tory newspapers. Meanwhile, the other men named by McGlynn—or at least those who had turned up in court—were now scheduled to appear at the summer assizes.

Abstract:
Literary history often positions Dryden as the precursor to the great Tory satirists of the eighteenth century, like Pope and Swift. Yet a surprising number of Whig writers expressed deep admiration for Dryden, despite their political and religious differences. They were particularly drawn to the enthusiastic dimensions of his writing. After a short reading of Dryden’s poem to his younger Whig contemporary William Congreve, this concluding chapter presents three case studies of Whig writers who used Dryden to develop their own ideas of enthusiastic literature. These three writers are Elizabeth Singer Rowe, John Dennis, and the Third Earl of Shaftesbury. These case studies are used to critique the political polarizations of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century literary history and to stress instead how literary friendship crossed political allegiances, and how writers of differing ideological positions competed to control mutually appealing ideas and vocabularies.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Ray Bradbury's continued relationship with his mentors, offering advice to them while affecting the tone and diction of his apprentice years. In early 1952 William F. Nolan published The Ray Bradbury Review, a booklet documenting Bradbury's creative output as projected through the end of the year. The next year Nolan privately printed a supplemental Bradbury Index and also offered a detailed account of Bradbury's major works-in-progress as well as his media work. This chapter first considers Bradbury's mentorship of emerging and young writers such as Nolan, Charles Beaumont, and George Clayton Johnson during the early 1950s, interacting with them and giving them encouragement. It then discusses Bradbury's conscious efforts to repay the blessings he had received from his old friends and mentors a decade earlier, including Edmond Hamilton, Leigh Brackett, Hank Kuttner, and C. L. Moore.
