Abstract:
Hollywood comedies of the 1950s saw the decline of a specific kind of female comedian, as unruly comediennes in the screwball tradition transformed into silly sexy vixens or tamed into homely sexless housewives. There are, however, some comedies which self-reflectively negotiate this shift. In this article, I would like to suggest that the voice of the comedienne serves as a marker of distinction. My article accordingly explores two pivotal examples of such transformative processes: Judy Holliday as Billie Dawn in Born Yesterday (1950) and Jean Hagen as Lina Lamont in Singin' in the Rain (1952). Both heroines feature what critics have called "the horrors of the harsh female voice." Whereas Billie's voice "survives" through schooling and refinement, Jean's voice resists all training and remains shrill and rowdy, leading to the violent expulsion of her character altogether. With the transformation and eventual disappearance of these extraordinary female actresses and their roles, such voices remained silent for a long time, until loud and brassy comediennes of a new generation were allowed to reappear on the silver screen and to raise their harsh and distinctive voices once again.

Abstract:
Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) methods have demonstrated impressive results for skilled motion synthesis of physically based characters, and while these methods perform well in terms of tracking reference motions or achieving complex tasks, several concerns arise when evaluating the naturalness of the motion. In this paper, we conduct a preliminary study of specific quantitative metrics for measuring the naturalness of motion produced by DRL control policies beyond their visual appearance. Namely, we propose to study the stiffness of the control policy, in anticipation that it will influence how the character behaves in the presence of external perturbation. Second, we establish two baselines for strength that allow evaluating the use of joint torques in comparison to human performance. Third, we propose the study of variability to reveal the unnatural precision of control policies and how they compare to real human motion. In sum, we aim to establish repeatable measures to assess the naturalness of control policies produced by DRL methods, and we present a set of comparisons from state-of-the-art systems. Finally, we propose simple modifications to improve realism on these axes.

Abstract:
A striatal toe is a misalignment of the hallux in dorsal flexion that frequently presents as a symptom of Parkinson’s disease and also atypical Parkinson syndromes. It can negatively impact patients during activities such as walking, putting on socks and shoes, and particularly while wearing shoes. It causes pain and thus induces a loss of quality of life. But, to date, we have few data on the topics of the prevalence, genesis, and therapy of striatal toe. Publications available on botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) have demonstrated a positive effect in the treatment of striatal toe, although the current study data are also rather limited in this area. Commensurate approval studies have not yet been performed. We will introduce our contemporary data on therapy for striatal toe with BoNT and we will also discuss possible questions open for further study.

Abstract:
AbstractScholarship and advocacy work regarding reproductive health have often focused on women’s experiences. Concerns about men’s sexual and reproductive healthcare (SRH) have historically been on the margins in this context. In the United States, young men are at the greatest risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), yet are the least likely to seek SRH. Based on research with 18 healthcare providers in a large public Florida university clinic, we examined providers’ perspectives about expanding men’s SRH provision and utilisation. Research findings demonstrate inconsistent provider strategies in treating men’s SRH needs and a clinical environment that has low expectations of men receiving preventive care, further perpetuating the placement of SRH responsibility upon women. This article contributes to applied and medical anthropology scholarship on health inequalities through its discussion of the challenges and barriers that contribute to poor SRH for young men and the critical role of providers in this context.

Abstract:
A slightly modified transcript of the Bernard Stiegler Memorial Lecture given on August 5, 2023, at the invitation of Yuk Hui and the Research Network for Philosophy and Technology, Hong Kong. From a reflection on Engels reflecting on the too-soonness and too-lateness of the French Commune government, via a film by Huillet and Straub to which these words of Engels gave birth, the author begins to reflect on Stiegler’s memorial text for Jacques Derrida. In an effort to reflect on Stiegler’s own position of advance and delay, three philosophical viewpoints on the significance of ChatGPT are offered, as a way into grappling with Stiegler’s most private, idiolectal concept: the idiotext. The recursions of AI are thereby distinguished from the recurrences of idiotextual “protension”, which invokes the question of desire. The latter leads to a little-known text by Stiegler on his time in prison, and on the meaning of prison as a locality of sublimation: a place in which time is in a way freed up, but also a place of sexual deprivation – how to think this conjunction?

Abstract:
Demographic trends in developed countries are marked by low birth rates and rising life expectancy in the last decades, as a result their population is shrinking and aging. Demographic change has always existed throughout history, but the extent of these shifts is unprecedented and will require major socioeconomic adjustments in many countries. The European Union (EU) is unfortunately one of those hit hardest by demographic change: Europe is the only continent that is expected to have a population decline until 2070, and even more alarmingly, the EU’s working-age population (20–64 years) is projected to decrease by around 20% during the same period, while the share of older age groups (65 years or older) in its total population will be the second highest globally among large economies. This will not only have a major impact on the EU’s position in the world, as population and economic size play an important role in the world’s power structures, but it will also lead to a number of significant negative consequences that have the potential to undermine its economic and social model. In addition, demographic challenges will affect EU Member States to a different degree, as there are substantial differences between and within countries, which, if not addressed adequately, will aggravate existing economic, social and territorial disparities and create political divisions. Therefore, while most of the matters associated with demographic change still remain within the exclusive competence of Member States, the EU is increasingly active in addressing these challenges ranging from areas such as pension and employment policies or issues related to health and long-term care to education policies. The aim of this article is first to give an insight into the most recent demographic trends in the EU, as well as their main economic and social consequences in order to provide a basis for better understanding the magnitude of the challenge.
