Abstract:
Technical practice uses a lot of cutting tools made of different materials. According to selecting workpiece have to be defined technological conditions. For all selected technological conditions is important prescribe parameters for machining. The basic parameters for every cutting process are cutting speed, feed and cutting depth. These technological conditions are defined by means of calculation or by means of mechanical engineering tables. Specification of tool wear by means of calculation is very difficult. Very important cutting tool property is its durability. Durability of cutting tool defines lifetime of this cutting tool and it determines its suitability for select technological operation. This material is usable for actuator (actuators and reduction gears) too. Description of cutting ceramic durability could mean for bearings manufacturer determination of optimal cutting parameter with maximum possible use of tool lifetime. Standard ISO 3685 contains instructions how to create T-vc dependence for cutting tools made of cutting ceramic. In this standard are only instructions how to create T-vc dependence according to Taylor. The article compares T-vc dependencies for various cutting ceramics (Al2O3, Al2O3+ZrO2, Al2O3+TiCN) with T-vc dependence defined in standard ISO 3685, because this standard describes T-vc dependence for all entered cutting materials together.

Abstract:
Durability of the cutting tools is very complex process that is influenced by more factors. To the Identify these factors is necessary execute many experiments. The technical science defines the basic method for determining durability of the cutting tool according to results and knowledge F. W. Taylor. The Literature from renowned authors indicates that durability of the cutting tool is defined on the base of T-vc dependence. T-vc dependence like a elementary durability dependence was described according to Taylor´s graphics dependence VB=f(s) for different cutting speeds in 1906. From this theory were later derived others theories, that became the basis of theories durability of cutting wedge for the different cutting materials. For the durability identification of the cutting tool are in technical practice used two basic tests. The First is the short-term durability test and second is machining long-term test method. Both these tests have some advantages and some disadvantages that are described in Introduction of this paper. This paper describes how to create and analytically express new durability dependence for ceramic cutting tool on the base of vc-VB dependence. This dependence consists from vc - cutting speed and VB - criterion of blunting. The whole procedure and its analytical expression is the subject of this paper.

Abstract:
The process effectiveness of blade cutting is defined considerably with the prediction accuracy of cutting tool durability term. But, in spite of that cutting processes have a probabilistic character, in modern mechanical engineering there are used durability de-pendences describing only the dependence of an average period of blade cutting tool durability upon cutting modes without taking into account a stochastic nature of tool wear depending upon many factors. For ac-counting cutting process variability there are offered stochastic models of cutting tool failure, but they hold good for a cutting tool with one cutting edge and in the case with a multi-blade cutting tool they must be speci-fied. In the paper it is defined that at a fan wear model with the increase of the blade number the period of cutting tool durability decreases, as failure likelihood of even one blade increases because of the blade properties spread of one tool. The factor of a durability period variation decreases with the growth of the blade number because of the decrease of an average durability period decrease. In the case of a wear accumulation model the multi-blade tool reliability does not depend upon the blade number. The dependences of an average period of durability and a factor of variation at a complex model of wear are similar to the case with the fan model of wear, but their values will be higher. In the case of a destruction model the factor of multi-blade tool durability variation does not depend upon the blade number, but an average durability depends considerably upon the blade number, but the dependence appearance corresponds to the dependence of an average durability at a fan model of wear. The type of the dependence of durability average period upon on the blade number at a generalized model of failures is similar to the cases considered previously, and a kind of the dependence of a variation factor changes depending on model parameters

Abstract:
Essential factors of each new discovery or piece of knowledge in science are predetermined, prepared and realized experiment. Every successfully realized experiment with obtained outputs and measurements indicates the gauge of asset that has been achieved by its execution. After analyzing of outputs final dependencies can be described that generalize whole experiment and allow entire process to be analytically identified. The production of bearings is very difficult process. Especially production of bearing rings is very complicated. Optimization of this process means significant savings for the company. Bearing rings are produced by turning. One of the most important parts of the turning process is cutting tool. On the base of cutting tools are determined many factors for example: quality, price, cutting speed, etc. All these factors of cutting tools are the only consequence of these cutting tools durability. Cutting tool durability determines its cutting properties and machinable ability. Specification of tool wear by means of calculation is very difficult. Durability of cutting tools is defined in standard ISO 3685. In standard ISO 3685 is definedT-vcdependence for different cutting materials and standard included process evaluation of tool durability for cutting materials made of high speed steel, sintered carbide and cutting ceramic. The article describes evaluation ofT-vcdependence on the selected type of cutting materials and theirs comparison with measured values T-vc dependence that are defined in standard ISO 3685.

Abstract:
Durability is the most important factor in the design of heat-exchangers to meet the specifications of the customers. To predict the durability, endurance tests are carried out. In this thesis, one of the endurance tests, thermal cycling is performed for three different internal coolant flows until failure which is known as Wöhler test. A tool is developed in MATLAB that could import data from all kinds of endurance tests and visualizes time histories of every channel of the test (test parameters such as temperature, pressure, flow). An algorithm is developed for Level Crossing counting method which works based on the Markov cycle counting method. This produces Level crossing curves (LCC) for all the channels of the test which says how well a test has been performed and the total number of cycles of the test. It was observed that the LCCs obtained from the tool gives accurate results when compared with those obtained from LMS software whose approach of producing LCCs is Rainflow cycle counting method. Strain measurements are performed for the same flowrates as that of the Wöhler tests. The results from strain measurements and Wöhler tests are used in the determination of Basquin’s coefficient of the Wöhler curve. It was observed that the optimal value of Basquin’s coefficient is 3.4.

Abstract:
Vehicle durability assessment in the automotive industry requires a good knowledge of the road load input the vehicle will experience while in service. This research explores the approach of artificial intelligence for predicting the road load input for road load simulation in the CAE environment prior to the development of a vehicle prototype. The multi-body dynamics (MBD) simulation of a quarter vehicle test rig, built with the specification of a commercial SUV, and the full vehicle of the same SUV were modelled and validated in SIMPACK using a simple tyre model developed using the tri-axial tyre test rig at the University of Birmingham. The models were used to carry out a road load data characterisation based on the variation in vehicle parameters. An artificial road input tool (ARIT) based on an optimised NARX artificial neural network architecture was developed to predict the road input for variants of vehicle for a particular vehicle behaviour over a road event. The results of the ARIT were used to run MBD simulations and compared with those from drive file iteration. The results of this research show a successful method of artificial intelligence for the generation of road load data from CAE simulations.

Abstract:

The built environment usually constitutes a very importantpart of the real capital of a nation and the constructionsector represents more than 10% of the yearly Gross NationalProduct of the industrialised world. The importance of goodplanning of all construction, where the service life of thework is considered, is of great interest and an importantaspect in sustainability considerations. The need for increasedknowledge about degradation of materials, for structuredmethodology, and for working tools for those involved in theplanning process, has resulted in an extensive effort inpre-normative research and standardisation regarding thisfield.

This thesis presents a discussion on service life planningand the role of the Factor Method in such a work, andespecially, discussion of modification and development of themethodology. In the design process, the need to evaluate theservice life of products is great, and this is a formidableproblem to solve, as the results will depend on both materialproperties and the environment in which the material is placedor used. A practical solution has to be based on a goodknowledge in the field, but also on a sound working strategy,to ensure that different design scenarios can be compared in astandardised or structured way. The Factor Method is apromising working tool for such an evaluation and comparison, but is as such, still more of a methodology, than a method.Examples of the use of the methodology are still very limitedand the method as such, is much discussed by researchers. However, its future will depend on how practical it will be toapply in use. The method is useful to estimate the service lifeof products, based on a known reference service life and anumber of modifying factors that will depend on the conditiondifferences between the specific project and the referencein-use conditions. The required precision of such a methodologyis discussed, especially in the light of inherent distributionin material properties and the fact that often the consequencesof failure are very limited. In such cases, the standardisedFactor Method is considered to be of great use and should giveparties involved a good means for working in a structured andsystematic way.

Abstract:
This research focuses on sustainability assessment in the upstream phase of an architectural project. This thesis points out the need to assess the impacts of pre-design's phases decisions on the sustainable development aspects. The upstream phase is very important because of their low cost and the large range of possible solution. As a consequence a tool or model is required that can help designers/Architects to identify sustainability potential in pre-design phase : this will constitute a "Decision aids tool" for architecture. Taking into account the impacts of sustainability in the upstream phase, the designer/Architects can achieve a different view and take advantage of these environmental effects to increase the level of sustainability of the project. The "Design to Objective" method (DTO) is used as an approach to provide a tool for decision support. This approach helps architects making decision. In addition, due to the DTO, all stakeholders in the field of construction can contribute to the programming phase. On the other hand, attention is directed toward the socio-cultural aspect which has been neglected by existing methods. This tool / software (SustainPro) has been experimented on four real projects in Iran. Experimental outcomes attest of the pertinence of the proposed approach

Abstract:
The report aims to bring together industry-based data for evaluation of sustainable building that shows the importance of the choice regarding exterior wall construction for apartment buildings. The construction industry has focused on reducing the energy and environmental impact on buildings during the management phase for a long time. The results have been positive and to this date, the management phase stands for 50 percent of sustainable buildings total energy use. Designing with a long-term perspective is the key to sustainable building, because small changes can have a big impact over time. The importance of energy efficiency during the construction phase has increased. The results of the development regarding sustainable building have increased the production of zero energy- buildings and passive houses. The new concepts of building technology are placing higher demands on the technical properties of the building envelope. A building envelope includes roofs, foundation, windows, doors and exterior walls. All components have a major impact on the technical properties of a building, but the report only highlights significant aspects of sustainable exterior wall constructions and how they should be evaluated. The goal of the report is to develop an adapted assessment tool with evaluation data from 9 different aspects. The aspects that we will review in the report is constructability, fire, moisture, aesthetics, management, indoor environment, energy losses from the exterior wall construction, life cycle cost and environmental impact. The assessment tool is portrayed as a template that rates and scores different exterior wall construction. This enables clear comparisons between structures. The basic facts for the report are retrieved from a literature study. Interviews with a structural engineer and a fire- and moisture consultant have been conducted for a deeper view on how the construction industry evaluates and scores exterior wall construction. To apply the assessment template for trade and industry, 6 exterior wall constructions with different structures and properties were selected. They were suitable for conceptual houses with sustainable building technology and are the basis for achieving requirements from National board of housing and passivehouse rules. The different exterior wall constructions were tested on the template and the results show that the model can be applied positively on them. The different constructions receive a general grade and a weighted grade. The weighted grade is based on a customizable weight factor. The assessment template illustrated the differences between them. Possibilities for further development of the assessment template exist. It’s possible to apply the template on structures with different kind of properties than the ones chosen for this project. The template can be a tool for choosing a construction based on the demands from a client and it can be adapted to different kind of climate zones.

Abstract:
The concepts employed to understand cities around the world are sourced form a limited set of urban experiences. Comparative urbanism seeks to address this problem, but has yet to offer concrete tools to do so. This book engages with comparative urbanisms as one of the most critical debates facing urban studies. Rather than corrective inclusion, an analysis of the premises behind comparative urbanism suggests that the focus should be on how cities and cases are compared. An epistemic inversion is necessary to redraw the relationship of models and cases. Employing an empirical study of art spaces in Beijing and Berlin to engage with this experiment, the qualitative investigation delves into their motivations and practices, discovering how non-profit art spaces claim and sustain their space in a competitive urban landscape. The nature of these art spaces as temporary is considered in the context of precarity and nomadism, but also challenged as the durability of many art spaces transcend the material space. The spaces of possibility that are exposed in a context of perceived inevitabilities reveal the function of aspiration. Aspiration, as a navigational capacity, is not only a function of the individual but also about the presence of elsewhere. This was significant for the imagination of the possible, and for their attainment.

Abstract:
Abstract3D concrete printing (3DCP) has been successfully and widely applied in the fields of civil structure, infrastructure, architectural decoration etc.,due to its unique advantages of automation and flexibility, and has shown great potential for development. One of the key steps in the execution of 3DCP is the tool-path planning process. However, 3DCP typically utilize the flowable composite materials which changes with time, and it is easy to induce interface joints or filling defects due to uneven path distribution when constructing the irregular-shaped construction. To solve the problem of printing path planning in 3DCP, this paper proposes tool-path planning based on mapping method, which integrates the rheology and necessary continuity of concrete materials into the printing process parameters, improves the mutual adaptability of printing process and material characteristics, improves the continuity of printing, the compactness of filling, and then ensures the stability and durability of printing structure.

Abstract:
Durability and reliability of solder joint interconnections between electronic parts and printed wiring assemblies (PWA) in a vibration environment is increasingly important since the introduction of lead-free solder, which is known to be an order of magnitude more susceptible to fatigue failure than its tin-lead counterpart. In this paper, an integrated hierarchical durability design tool is introduced to analyze the Line Replaceable Units (LRU) as a whole under a vibration environment. The results will be used for solder joint fatigue analysis. This paper describes the automation of box-, board-, and part-level analyses. The box-level analysis combines PWA’s and the mounting chassis in an automated fashion. The construction of PWA’s is also through this automated tool. NIKE3D-based acoustic analysis tool is conducted on the assembled model for vibration analysis. The results are exported to the automated part-level analysis for final solder joint fatigue analysis and to subsequent visualization display. This paper illustrates this detailed processes and presents a simple example will be presented.

Abstract:
Results are presented on durability analysis of an electronic module subjected to thermal and power cycles, and vibration. A hierarchical analysis process for analyzing the durability of the module is described. The initial step is a transient thermal analysis of the unit in which the module is located. The three operating modes of the unit are modeled and analyzed using a commercially available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tool. The tool generates a time history of the temperature at all points within the unit and module. The second step comprises exporting temperatures from the transient temperature analysis to a durability prediction tool. The temperatures calculated by the global analysis are mapped to the printed wiring assembly (PWA) mounted within the box, yielding the temperature distribution of the PWA as functions of time. The durability tool utilizes a modified Coffin Manson formula together with the transient temperature profile to estimate the durability of each lead and solder joint included in the module. Thermomechanical fatigue level of leads and solder joints within the unit are reported as a cumulative damage index (CDI). The CDI is the ratio of the number of cycles required for the test item to endure under a life time to the number of cycles the item is predicted to sustain before failure. Durability analysis of solder joint due to vibration is performed separately. The environment is specified according to the location where the unit is mounted. CDI due to vibration is added to form an overall CDI based on Miner’s rule.

Abstract:
A new power impact tool design has been developed and tested using advanced engineering polymers to replace traditional metal components. The new polymer-metal impact mechanism generates less noise, lower vibrations, and potentially reduces biomechanical injuries. Power tools are known to cause several medical ailments including Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAV), Raynaud's phenomenon, and Vibration White Finger unless the daily exposure and/or dosage is limited. To evaluate the effects of a polymer-metal impact mechanism on tool performance, a non-linear model describing the equations of motion and resulting output forces were developed. In addition, a number of experiments with a high frequency Instron test machine and prototype tools were performed to validate the model and compare performance of conventional power tools to the new polymer based design. The results show that although adding a polymer does reduce noise and vibration, the reduction in impact force is relatively small and statistically insignificant. Various polymer materials and shapes were evaluated and results show that for durability and performance, the optimum appears to be a plug inserted in a cavity in either the piston or the cutting tool, thus creating a state of confined compression on the polymer. The polymer used in this research was Minlon® (mineral reinforced Nylon66), and durability was improved when the polymer inserts were cycled with compressive loads before use in the power tool.

Abstract:
Report B1: This report therefore aims at displaying the Status Quo of PVT Characterization in order to support PVT technology in its further development and applications. The report is hence of interest for researchers as well as public and private sector stakeholders. A key finding is that the reliability and durability of PVT modules are especially challenged at elevated temperatures and higher humidity loads. The test methods available from the IEC and ISO standards are covering the specifics of PV and ST module’s, most of which are similar for PVT modules, too.

Abstract:
High-volume fly ash concrete (HVFAC) has improved durability and sustainability properties at a lower cost than conventional concrete, but its early-age properties like strength gain, setting time, and air entrainment can present challenges for application to concrete pavements. This research report helps with the implementation of HVFAC for pavement applications by providing guidelines for HVFAC mix design, testing protocols, and new tools for better quality control of HVFAC properties. Calorimeter tests were performed to evaluate the effects of fly ash sources, cement–fly ash interactions, chemical admixtures, and limestone replacement on the setting times and hydration reaction of HVFAC. To better target the initial air-entraining agent dosage for HVFAC, a calibration curve between air-entraining dosage for achieving 6% air content and fly ash foam index test has been developed. Further, a digital foam index test was developed to make this test more consistent across different labs and operators. For a more rapid prediction of hardened HVFAC properties, such as compressive strength, resistivity, and diffusion coefficient, an oxide-based particle model was developed. An HVFAC field test section was also constructed to demonstrate the implementation of a noncontact ultrasonic device for determining the final set time and ideal time to initiate saw cutting. Additionally, a maturity method was successfully implemented that estimates the in-place compressive strength of HVFAC through wireless thermal sensors. An HVFAC mix design procedure using the tools developed in this project such as the calorimeter test, foam index test, and particle-based model was proposed to assist engineers in implementing HVFAC pavements.
