Full textMind mapping is a communication tool that has been around for decades though it is rarely discussed as a tool for facilitating organizational change. It is possible for this underutilized communication tool and the ever-present challenge of organizational change to work in harmony on a more consistent basis. This exploratory research asked Change Leaders and Change Participants about their current mind mapping usage or experience, and requested their input on the use of mind mapping for organizational change efforts. There were 76 Change Leaders and 11 others who self-described themselves as Change Participants who responded to a virtual data collection process. Overall change readiness levels were predominantly at the moderate level, 37% of Change Leaders and 45% of Change Participants, an encouraging statistic for organizations considering change. Respondents reported that mind mapping is mostly used as a personal tool for organization, planning events, setting goals, and writing papers. Change Leaders (n=20) who reported using mind mapping professionally, commented they used it primarily for communication and collaboration, and project and systems planning and design. Specific practices included coaching, clarifying objectives, evaluating and monitoring projects, assessing lessons learned, redesigning curriculum, realigning resources, setting expectations, objectives and goals, and establishing timelines. One study conclusion was that these change practitioners understood how change is inevitable, and indicated their willingness to actively participate. This makes it important for organizations to capitalize on change participants’ knowledge and enthusiasm to enable successful change and enhance employee well-being. Concluding that attitudes, behaviors, and feelings toward change vary based on the role one plays, Change Leaders can benefit from the efforts of Change Participants by simply respecting their role and knowledge and involving them in the entire process, from planning to implementation. It is a foregone conclusion that communication is essential for any change process regardless of what specific tool is used, but the importance of selecting an appropriate method(s) based on the situation, message, and the recipients is critical. Using mind mapping as a change management tool specifically designed for certain aspects of organizational change is highly recommended, as it allows for both linear and non-linear communication.

We developed a prototype system to detect and flag changes between pairs of geo-tagged videos of the same scene with similar camera trajectories. The purpose of the system is to help human video analysts detect threats within a set of videos. While computers cannot differentiate threat from non-threat events, they can assist analysts by guiding their attention to sections of video where interesting events are more likely to appear. The system generates a single output video representing the difference between the input pair as well as a set of regions denoting sections of the world where changes occurred between the input videos. These regions represent segments of video where interesting events are likely to be seen. The difference video allows a video analyst to quickly see the differences between the two input videos and decide whether further analysis is required. The system is based on the video matching work by Seth Teller and Peter Sand [14].

[EN] Global Warming, and the climate change (CC) it produces, is one of the most global and urgent threats humankinds is responsible for. The challenge of mitigating and adapting to CC, among others, is a responsibility that has reached all disciplines, including the research and innovation (R&I) process. For more than 10 years, and as a way to tackle these great challenges of our time, with the intention of fostering responsible research, the European Commission has been promoting a cross-cutting issue named: "Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI)". The aim is to bring the problems (such as research integrity, non-inclusion of stakeholders, application of ethical or sustainability principles, etc.,.) related to R&I to light, to anticipate the possible consequences of R&I process and outcomes, and to engage society in the discussion of how science and technology can help create the kind of world and society we want for generations to come. This thesis emerges as a bridge between the great challenge represented by CC and the demand for responsibility from R&I process and outcomes, addressed in the context of RRI. Research funders and society as a whole claim that R&I teams must provide socially desirable, ethically acceptable, and sustainable outcomes. Hence, the general question to be answered in this thesis is: how does a research team, while not being specialists, know if its research is responsible for relevant contributions to CC, and how can they include measures to reduce or compensate such contributions (Greenhouse Gas emissions, GHG)? To respond to this question, the present dissertation begins with the main foundations that are central to it: CC and RRI. As regards the former concept, we explain the importance and means to calculate the contribution of GHG to CC, mainly the carbon footprint approach. In addition, regarding the latter, how this thesis aligns with the key RRIs' area of environmental sustainability, its substantive frameworks and its anticipation and reflexivity dimensions. Once these two foundations are established, CC is addressed in the context of RRI, reviewing the literature on RRI projects and proposals, which include environmental sustainability, and CC in particular. As a result, two avenues of research arise, which are developed in the following sections. An avenue about how to assess the stakeholders' influence in a research project within the context of RRI, which is developed in chapter 3, and an avenue about the need for new tools based on open-access databases to help practitioners to integrate CC prevention in their R&I activities. Chapter 4 presents the design of a novel tool with a didactic algorithm for anticipatory carbon footprint measuring in R&I projects. This tool allows researchers who are untrained in environmental impact assessment to estimate the greenhouse gas emissions of their R&I projects at early stages, when anticipation and reflexivity are the core RRI dimensions.

Full textThe higher education setting is a unique environment in which individuals are tasked with facilitating change. Numerous internal and external factors are causing institutions to need to change how they perform tasks and deliver educational opportunities to students. Therefore, institutional leaders must explore techniques for facilitating change. Within institutions, the people are the ones who lead change initiatives. However, there is limited empirical research on how personnel within institutions perceive change management programs.
This study provides empirical research regarding how personnel in higher education institutions perceive change management initiatives. More specifically, this study was a program evaluation of personnel at a single institution with a Six Sigma change management program. Document analyses as well as one-on-one and focus group interviews were used to evaluate the Six Sigma program. The interviews were used to understand how personnel perceive the Six Sigma program in the higher education setting and its ability to prepare them to facilitate change.
The themes developed from the interviews allowed for the conclusion to be drawn that Six Sigma does help prepare individual to facilitate change. Although, participants found the program in its entirety to help prepare them to facilitate change, they also acknowledged many shortcomings of the program. The helpful aspects included: the training program, the trainer(s), providing a process to follow, started the change conversation, knowledge can change, and confidence to lead change. The challenges included were rigidity of the program, statistical calculations, ability to influence change, and scope of the program. Additionally, participants did not perceive Six Sigma to align with the types of problems found in the higher education setting.

Full textMaster of Science
Climate services, often refers as decision support tools, are developed to provide information with a view to aid in decision making and policy planning for adaptation due to the adverse impacts caused by climate variability and change. This study investigated a total of 19 publicly available climate services and decision support tools based on previously proposed evaluation framework. This evaluation framework originally consists of four design elements which further classified into nine evaluation metrics and each of tools were given "High", "Medium", and "Low" score against these criteria. These metrics are: identification of decision making context, discussion of the role of climate information in decision making, discussion of non-climatic factors, uncertainty of the data presented, accessibility of information, discussion on the development process, sustainability/ ongoing process, discussion of funding sources, and evaluation of the tool through survey, modeling or contingent valuation method. Evaluated tools performed better than average in terms of uncertainty of the data presented, accessibility of information, discussion on the development process, sustainability/ ongoing process, discussion of funding sources, and feedback/ evaluation criteria whereas they performed below average in problem identification and decision making context, discussion of the role of climate information in decision making, and discussion of non-climatic factors. Four case study evaluation were also presented in this study for better understanding of how the evaluation process works for the tools. The results of this study provide an insight about the relative strengths and weakness of the evaluated tools and these can be used to improve existing climate services tools. This will also help in better decision making and policy planning for different sectors that are being impacted by the changing climate.

Full textThis study recognises that innovation and renewal is instrumental in gaining competitive advantage. However, large firms often face a renewal dilemma. Despite the fact that many firms recognise the need for innovation and renewal, they find it challenging to implement innovation. Thus, the need for renewal is complicated by finding a suitable business development tool to bring about the renewal needed. The problem is further aggravated by a fundamental managerial conflict of exploration and exploitation. This conflict causes a reluctance to engage in exploration activities (searching for new resources, knowledge, and competence), due to the operational focus of exploiting current resources, knowledge, and competence. To overcome the renewal dilemma, this study investigated the relationship and linkages between Internal Corporate Venturing (ICV) and corporate renewal to determine how Internal Corporate Venturing (ICV) can be used as a tool to initiate corporate renewal and overcome the renewal dilemma. The study made use of a qualitative, mixed-method methodology and investigated the research problem in two phases. The first phase of this study used Grounded Theory to propose a theoretical framework that illustrated how ICV provides a firm with a strategic process that effectively balances exploration and exploitation activities, providing the linking mechanisms needed between a firm’s corporate context and its external environment, enabling the firm to initiate corporate renewal. In the second stage of this study, the theory was assessed, by comparing the proposed theoretical framework to a case study involving an internal venturing programme at an established financial services firm in Southern Africa. Based on a comparison between the proposed theoretical framework and the case study, this thesis concludes that ICV could theoretically be used to address the renewal dilemma; however, it was not possible to confirm this proposition, due to the stage in which the corporate venturing programme the case examined found itself,. The case study did however suggest that ICV could enhance a firm’s ability to instigate corporate renewal, through its ability to create idiosyncratic endowments from a firm’s endowment base.
