Abstract:
As part of my work as a development consultant and therapist working with senior executives, the aim of this study is to ascertain whether the personal attitudes of senior executives who are successful at leading change impact on change within their organisations through their leadership style and behaviour. In addition, the project is to assess what are the personal qualities that contribute towards their own feelings of positivity towards change. I have sought to examine the personality profiles of 'successful' executives to look at attitude formation and development within their own psyche with regard to change through a qualitative in-depth case study approach. I worked with eleven successful senior leaders of change from the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. One of the objectives of the project was to theorise whether interventions may be made to assist senior people who are less successful at leading change to examine their own attitudes and self-concept in order to influence their resulting behaviour and hence improve their leadership performance. Ethnographic and auto-ethnographic methodologies were used with reflexive and inductive ways of researching. I carried out approximately six to eight hours of semi-structured one-to-one interviews with each of my participants and the group met together on one occasion. To analyse the data, word tables were produced which correlated through cross-case synthesis. The main correlation from the personality profiles showed that all the participants were very 'driven' in order to achieve excellence. Their motivators were mainly intrinsic and tended to derive from their backgrounds in childhood which were mostly either deprived of parental emotional affirmation, where in some way and at some point in participants' formative years, families were dysfunctional or striving to 'better themselves' from a practical perspective. Interesting aspects emerged relating to Attachment Theory, together with influences from participants' background class, education routes and role models. The main conclusion to be drawn from the project, and agreed by participants, is that a high degree of self-knowledge is essential for successful leadership. Recommendation is made that senior executives who are not particularly self-aware may, if they were prepared to accept it, benefit from development in which they examine their self-concept in an attempt to understand how past experiences influence and impact on their present attitudes and behaviour. This could then present an opportunity for them to recognise where attitudes resulting from past experiences are still affecting their present lives and perhaps to bring such experiences to conscious thought in order to deal with them and move on. It is considered that this greater self-knowledge and perhaps greater self-acceptance would benefit them through the prevention of any of their own negative issues influencing their behaviour as leaders of change. One way of enabling such a development process may be through individual coaching where the coach has an understanding of how past experience impacts on present (and future) behaviour. It has been recommended by my participants that I continue with this research post-doctorally and I am particularly keen to explore in more depth the relationship between Attachment Theory and successful leadership.

Gardner, Ambar Alexis, and Ambar Alexis Gardner. "Sustainability Toolkit: An Education Tool for Behavioral Change Strategies." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/625288.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose: There is a worldwide movement towards sustainability. A stepping-stone towards a sustainability conscience population starts in the education of the younger generation. Focusing on improving sustainability education will shift and shape youths' interests and lifestyles into an educated community that will work sustainably. A sustainability conscience community will continue to make moral sustainable decisions in their future endeavors. The gap between theory and practice of sustainability is substantial. Educational institutions must be the leaders in this subject to mold future generations’ incoming leaders into sustainability conscious critical thinkers. Current environmental issues such as climate change, CO2 Emissions, poverty and so on must impact these educational institutions to make sustainability education a priority in its curriculum. Addressing this problem requires a holistic approach which integrates sustainability education earlier on to grasp further understanding of sustainability actions in higher education and in society. Sustainability education exists in all levels. Although, sustainability education is much more prominent in higher education institutions as opposed to Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. Consequently, less students are prepared with the desired sustainability knowledge needed in higher education and students' future careers to instill in their disciplines since behavior is achieved through repetitive actions that were not set as a foundation earlier in their education. Approach: There were two approaches in this research. The first research approach was conducting a survey in 120 students, half of them in secondary education and the other half in higher education. The survey was formatted to analyze three different questions: 1) whether students in high school and higher education knew about sustainability 2) whether students' lifestyle consisted of pro-environmental actions, 3) and whether they learned to perform these actions in secondary education or higher education. The second approach was to create an educational tool to implement sustainability behavioral change strategies in their everyday lifestyles. Findings: Study found that most students are aware about sustainability. However, most students engage in pro-environmental actions in higher education because they started learning about them in higher education. Therefore, although most secondary education students are aware about sustainability, they aren't engaging in pro-environmental actions. In conclusion, a sustainability toolkit was created based on behavioral change strategies to reduce water usage, CO2 emissions, energy consumption, and waste output in their school and everyday lifestyles. Value: The efforts of sustainability in Higher Education have been clear in most recent years, although, there is still much resistance to change, transform and reimagine society and education for sustainability. The future of life and social world on Earth is in jeopardy since poverty, climate change, and lack of peace is occurring worldwide. Sustainability education must respond and act on this challenge subsequently to respect all forms of life and future generations. The mission of the sustainability toolkit is to create a pedagogy to assist educational institutions and communities to develop the skills and knowledge to work sustainably.

Wilson, Brenda G. "Exploration of mind mapping as an organizational change tool." Thesis, Pepperdine University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10100912.

Full text
Abstract:

Mind mapping is a communication tool that has been around for decades though it is rarely discussed as a tool for facilitating organizational change. It is possible for this underutilized communication tool and the ever-present challenge of organizational change to work in harmony on a more consistent basis. This exploratory research asked Change Leaders and Change Participants about their current mind mapping usage or experience, and requested their input on the use of mind mapping for organizational change efforts. There were 76 Change Leaders and 11 others who self-described themselves as Change Participants who responded to a virtual data collection process. Overall change readiness levels were predominantly at the moderate level, 37% of Change Leaders and 45% of Change Participants, an encouraging statistic for organizations considering change. Respondents reported that mind mapping is mostly used as a personal tool for organization, planning events, setting goals, and writing papers. Change Leaders (n=20) who reported using mind mapping professionally, commented they used it primarily for communication and collaboration, and project and systems planning and design. Specific practices included coaching, clarifying objectives, evaluating and monitoring projects, assessing lessons learned, redesigning curriculum, realigning resources, setting expectations, objectives and goals, and establishing timelines. One study conclusion was that these change practitioners understood how change is inevitable, and indicated their willingness to actively participate. This makes it important for organizations to capitalize on change participants’ knowledge and enthusiasm to enable successful change and enhance employee well-being. Concluding that attitudes, behaviors, and feelings toward change vary based on the role one plays, Change Leaders can benefit from the efforts of Change Participants by simply respecting their role and knowledge and involving them in the entire process, from planning to implementation. It is a foregone conclusion that communication is essential for any change process regardless of what specific tool is used, but the importance of selecting an appropriate method(s) based on the situation, message, and the recipients is critical. Using mind mapping as a change management tool specifically designed for certain aspects of organizational change is highly recommended, as it allows for both linear and non-linear communication.

We developed a prototype system to detect and flag changes between pairs of geo-tagged videos of the same scene with similar camera trajectories. The purpose of the system is to help human video analysts detect threats within a set of videos. While computers cannot differentiate threat from non-threat events, they can assist analysts by guiding their attention to sections of video where interesting events are more likely to appear. The system generates a single output video representing the difference between the input pair as well as a set of regions denoting sections of the world where changes occurred between the input videos. These regions represent segments of video where interesting events are likely to be seen. The difference video allows a video analyst to quickly see the differences between the two input videos and decide whether further analysis is required. The system is based on the video matching work by Seth Teller and Peter Sand [14].

Abstract:
Sweden is facing problems with housing shortages in several cities, this calls for new solutions to solve the housing shortages, and temporary housing could be seen as one. In the new proposal of legislation it is stated that the social consequences of temporary housing is not yet examined. Hence, the thesis aims to map out and investigate the social consequences of temporary housing in Sweden, within the context of social sustainability. To achieve this aim a case study has been conducted, including three different cases. Further a literature review and interviews have been conducted to develop a theoretical framework and defining important concepts and deepen the understanding. Furthermore three different levels of social sustainability have been identified; The built environment, Structural changes and Collaboration & Inclusion. Several municipalities stated in interviews that temporary housing is not something they strive to develop but rather a necessity due to crisis. Several attributes have been identified regarding establishing social sustainability when developing temporary housing related to location, development and the process. Apart from these aspects, social sustainability should be defined with a basis in the project, important aspects needs to be developed with the specific project in mind. Temporary housing is today seen as a necessity, where municipalities develop temporary housing as the only solution to a housing crisis, but have a potential of becoming a tool for positive change and a platform from inventions.

Wall, Thomas A. "A risk-based assessment tool to prioritize roadway culvert assets for climate change adaptation planning." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/50393.

Full text
Abstract:
There is growing concern in the United States and abroad that changes in climate may have serious adverse impacts on communities and their civil infrastructure systems. In response, governments and agencies have begun to investigate adaptation: actions taken to reduce the vulnerability or increase the resiliency of natural and human systems in light of expected climate change. In the transportation sector, adaptation planning has predominantly pursued risk-based strategies that seek to identify climate impacts, and assess infrastructure vulnerabilities across multiple asset types, in network-level planning. However, given the complexity of the myriad asset types of which engineered civil infrastructure systems are composed, these frameworks may not adequately address the unique concerns of these various individual asset types. This research develops a risk-based framework to assess and prioritize at a network-level the risks of highway culvert assets to the projected impacts of climate change, specifically focusing on increases in extreme precipitation, and the associated potential for flooding. The framework is applied in a series of case studies using culvert management data provided by four state DOTs, and national climate change projection and infrastructure datasets. The framework developed proposes a new characterization of infrastructure climate change risk, based upon the catastrophe model, to address the need for qualitative approaches to risk given the uncertain nature of climate change, and the sometimes sparse inventory and attribute data for various assets. This characterization proposes three “dimensions” of infrastructure climate risk (climate change impact exposure, asset climate impact vulnerability, and asset criticality) to assign culvert asset priorities. The research develops a method to project the geospatial extent and changes in magnitude of extreme precipitation events; it also develops two measures of culvert vulnerability to increased flow conditions based upon data collected in general culvert management activities. This research demonstrates that existing data sources can be reasonably combined in an analytical assessment framework to identify climate change impact risks to highway culvert assets, providing an additional resource to the existing climate change adaptation planning and risk management toolkit in the transportation infrastructure sector, and also laying a foundation for further refinement of these methods. The results of this research demonstrate that existing climate change projection data, when used alongside culvert inventory and attribute data, provides a reasonable means by which to analyze the projected exposure of culvert assets to climate change impacts. This research also demonstrates that existing culvert management data provides a reasonable foundation upon which to assess the relative vulnerability of culverts to increased flow conditions, although additional research is necessary to develop these methods. The structure of the proposed framework provides a viable means by which quantitative climate change projections, asset vulnerability, and asset criticality data can be combined in a mixed-methods approach to qualitatively characterize climate change impact risks to highway culvert assets despite uncertainty in climate change projections and other inputs.

Abstract:
Recent prolonged droughts make the urgent need to revise the criteria for water use permits in Brazil, especially in basins under conflicts for water use. Mechanisms for water risks transfer are an important adaptation tool. However, in Brazil, there is no established methodology that adapts this technique to assist the water use permit instrument. Moreover, there is no water risk insurance methodology with uncertainty analysis that complements its effectiveness in reducing losses from extreme events. Hydrologic modelling is the basis for development of these tools, which carries uncertainties that must be considered in decision-making. The objectives of this project were: i) coupling climatic, hydrologic and water insurance models to evaluate the use permit decision-making; ii) analyse sensitivity of performance indicators of a water risk insurance model through the application of different hydrologic models driven by climate change projections. The methodology was applied in donor basins of the Cantareira Water Supply System, which supplies water to an important metropolitan region that showed itself vulnerable to hydrologic extremes in the last years. The MHD-INPE and SWAT hydrologic models were applied, driven by the Eta- HadGEM2-ES climate model projections to characterize the future hydrologic regime in the region and also to compare the structure, performances and gaps of the models. Structural differences are most likely the greater responsible for the results differences, though no result could be identified as \"more certain\". With the hydrologic models outputs fitted the the Gumbel extreme values distribution, a proposed insurance fund simulator, MTRH-SHS, was run with 100 equiprobable scenarios of 50-year annual low-flow events to calculated an optimized premium capable of paying all indeminities of hydrologic drought. Besides the future hydrologic regimes, water demand scenarios were also tested. The optimized premiums were compared to the local GDP to assess the apparent affordability of the insurance, with some premium representing up to 0.54% of local GDP, but in the water resources management framework, the decision should be made collectively by several actors within the basin's committee.

Abstract:
Background: Organizations today are having to initiate the necessary changes as they are pressured to keep up with market environments that often yield unpredictable and complex events. When initiating, and more importantly, attempting to implement these changes, the theory states that 70% of these efforts fail. One of the reasons behind this high rate of failure is the ineffective internal communication during strategic change, which results in misunderstandings and perhaps even resistance among employees. Here, building on previous research, it is argued that visual management can play an important role. However, the current theory lacks empirical research that investigates or examines the current usage of visualizations as a strategic tool during change, as the majority focuses on providing literature reviews or theoretical frameworks. Research question: To what extend do organizations use visualizations within the process of organizational change? Purpose: The purpose of this dissertation is to get a better understanding of the usage of visualizations as a strategic tool during the process of organizational change. Method: In order to fulfil the purpose of the thesis and to be able to explore the research question, a quantitative research design was chosen. The data for this thesis was collected through a web-based questionnaire among organizations situated in The Netherlands. A specification was made towards organizational structure whereas the retail sector can be characterised as having multiple hierarchical levels. The survey consisted of three parts each dedicated to a sub-question relating to the main research question. In total, 282 respondents participated in the research. Theoretical framework: An overview of the current literature is provided starting with describing the topic of change, where several aspects such as the factors supporting and hampering change and the process of strategic change are discussed. In addition, a specification is made towards communication, where especially internal communication during change is highlighted. The final component in this theoretical framework is visualizations, which is discussed by summarizing what the current theory states regarding characteristics, types, strategic usage and the field of visual management. All of this through a strategic scope and within the setting of organizational or strategic change. Findings: In this dissertation, it was discovered that a very low amount of organizations perceives their change efforts to be successful. This may be due to things not always going according to plan, where interestingly, a high number of organizations did state that plans are created during strategic or organizational change. Secondly, the data showed how organizations are already showing a significant use of visualizations as a strategic tool during change. However, the more ‘complex’ visualizations scored noticeably lower on usage and frequency. Lastly, within the findings of this thesis it became apparent that organizations perceive the usage of visualizations during change to be very positive. Especially high numbers were found on how using visualizations can lead to employees better understanding why the changes are needed.

Abstract:
In recent years, there has been increased reliance on the use of risk assessment in the juvenile justice system to predict and classify offenders based on their risk to reoffend. Over the years, the predictive validity of risk assessments has improved through the inclusion of actuarial assessment and dynamic risk factors. The predictive validity of certain assessments, such as the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (YLS/CMI), has been well established through numerous replication studies on different subgroups of the population. The validity of other instruments, such as the Positive Achievement Change Tool (PACT), is in its infancy having only been validated on the sample of the population for which it was created. The PACT, a relatively new juvenile risk assessment tool, was adapted from the Washington State Juvenile Court Assessment and validated on the Florida juvenile population. This study sought to demonstrate the predictive validity of the PACT risk assessment, analyze gender differences in juvenile recidivism, and determine the relative importance of individual-level, social-level, and community-level variables in the prediction of recidivism for a sample of juveniles in Tarrant County, Texas. The results of this research confirmed the predictive validity of the PACT for juveniles served by Tarrant County Juvenile Services (TCJS). Despite possessing adequate predictive validity for the entire population, gender-specific analyses revealed differences in the ability of the PACT to accurately classify female delinquents based on risk to reoffend. Not only did gender differences emerge in the predictive validity of the PACT, but males and female recidivism was also predicted by different social-level indicators. The results of this research provided further evidence for social-causation theories of crime and delinquency, with social-level indicators exerting the strongest relationship with recidivism when compared to individual-level and community-level predictors. The inability of community-level predictors to enhance the predictive accuracy of the assessment suggest broad application of the PACT across jurisdictions. TCJS has invested a considerable amount of time, resources, and funding in the implementation and maintenance of the PACT. The results of this study provided support and direction for the continued use of the PACT at TCJS. In addition, establishing the predictive validity of the PACT on the Tarrant County juvenile population satisfied the legislative requirement for a population specific validation of the risk assessment implemented in each county.

Abstract:
Bringing about positive teacher change in physical education is often a slow process not supported by traditional professional development practices. The purpose of this study was (a) to assess the usage and satisfaction with the online site PE Central and (b) to ascertain whether PE Central constitutes a valid source of professional development leading to changes in teaching practices and student learning outcomes. Participants (45 pre-service and 288 in-service teachers) completed an online survey assessing the effects of using PE Central on their perceptions of usage, satisfaction, professional development, teacher change, and student engagement. Results indicated no significant differences between pre- and in-service teachers in usage and satisfaction of PE Central, but that on average the sample population uses it monthly and are more satisfied than not with the site. Results further indicated that PE Central is positively related to provisional and permanent teacher change and increased student engagement. However, the researcher recommends changes in order for the site to become a viable professional development option for teachers.

This research explores the relationship between the Ethiopian women’s movement, the state, and the law. It looks at how women’s activism that focuses on legal change and personal rights may also make a contribution to political culture and the process of democratisation more generally. The study outlines Ethiopia’s recent political history and its transition to democracy, exploring in particular the history of women’s activism. In Ethiopia, as its civil society has emerged, particular women’s or women-focused organisations have been at the forefront of the changes. One organisation in particular, the Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association (EWLA) has emerged as a driving force in Ethiopian civil society. The study explores how this organisation is using a legal change to try and improve women’s rights. With a focus on violence against women, the study shows how a gap existed between legislation at different scales in Ethiopia. The commitments Ethiopia has made to international human rights conventions and the protections for women enshrined in the Ethiopian Constitution were not reflected in national legislation. The research explores how EWLA tried to close this gap through lobbying for legal reform, and examines the role that international human rights frameworks played in this process. The study then addresses the implementation of the law, analysing the difficulties encountered in using the law in practice to protect women’s rights.

Abstract:
Within the context of healthcare delivery, human lives are at risk when health care professionals fail to communicate effectively. Audits by The Joint Commission from 1995 to 2005 revealed that 65% of sentinel events occurred as a result of staff miscommunication, prompting the requirement that standardized handoff tools be deployed. Therefore, this project was completed to improve safety in the hospital through implementation of a standardized tool that could enhance the quality of nurse handoff communication. Mohorek & Webb's (2015) linear model of communication, which emphasizes the importance of encoding, transmission, and decoding in the communication process, provided the framework for this project. Participants included 11 registered nurses (RNs) and 14 licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) who completed the pre-and-post intervention survey using the Handover Evaluation Scale. The RNs reflected significant difference in improvement in the perceived quality of handoff following the implementation of standardized handoff tool: pre-test (M = 66.91, SD = 7.27) compared to post-test (M = 80.91, SD = 7.45); t(10) = -5.09, p = 0.000. On the other hand, there was no statistically significant change noted with the LVN group before implementation of standardized handoff tool: pre-test (M = 70.71, SD = 9.72) compared to post- test implementation (M = 73.57, SD = 7.73); t(13) = -1.06, p = 0.309. The findings resulting from this project suggest that there are important differences in provider types when using standardized handoff tools and that more attention to this dynamic is warranted. The social change mandate of protecting the safety of patients is enhanced through effective communication among nurses and was demonstrated in the project.

Abstract:
In the field of war studies there is an ongoing debate about the understanding of the doctrine. A common understanding of the doctrine is important not only within the field of research but also because it creates a common language among its users which reduces the risk of misunderstandings. Harald Høiback, an important player in the matter, claims that a nations prolonged geostrategic situation predicts its doctrines content with regard to its function. These functions are to act as tools of command, education and change. The main aim of this essay is to make a contribution to the debate by testing Høiback´s predication. In a case study of the Swedish strategic doctrines MSD12 and MSD16, Høiback´s predication is tested using qualitative text analysis. The main finding of this essay is that a doctrine can change its function as tool of command faster than Høiback's assertion predicts.

Abstract:
[EN] Global Warming, and the climate change (CC) it produces, is one of the most global and urgent threats humankinds is responsible for. The challenge of mitigating and adapting to CC, among others, is a responsibility that has reached all disciplines, including the research and innovation (R&I) process. For more than 10 years, and as a way to tackle these great challenges of our time, with the intention of fostering responsible research, the European Commission has been promoting a cross-cutting issue named: "Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI)". The aim is to bring the problems (such as research integrity, non-inclusion of stakeholders, application of ethical or sustainability principles, etc.,.) related to R&I to light, to anticipate the possible consequences of R&I process and outcomes, and to engage society in the discussion of how science and technology can help create the kind of world and society we want for generations to come. This thesis emerges as a bridge between the great challenge represented by CC and the demand for responsibility from R&I process and outcomes, addressed in the context of RRI. Research funders and society as a whole claim that R&I teams must provide socially desirable, ethically acceptable, and sustainable outcomes. Hence, the general question to be answered in this thesis is: how does a research team, while not being specialists, know if its research is responsible for relevant contributions to CC, and how can they include measures to reduce or compensate such contributions (Greenhouse Gas emissions, GHG)? To respond to this question, the present dissertation begins with the main foundations that are central to it: CC and RRI. As regards the former concept, we explain the importance and means to calculate the contribution of GHG to CC, mainly the carbon footprint approach. In addition, regarding the latter, how this thesis aligns with the key RRIs' area of environmental sustainability, its substantive frameworks and its anticipation and reflexivity dimensions. Once these two foundations are established, CC is addressed in the context of RRI, reviewing the literature on RRI projects and proposals, which include environmental sustainability, and CC in particular. As a result, two avenues of research arise, which are developed in the following sections. An avenue about how to assess the stakeholders' influence in a research project within the context of RRI, which is developed in chapter 3, and an avenue about the need for new tools based on open-access databases to help practitioners to integrate CC prevention in their R&I activities. Chapter 4 presents the design of a novel tool with a didactic algorithm for anticipatory carbon footprint measuring in R&I projects. This tool allows researchers who are untrained in environmental impact assessment to estimate the greenhouse gas emissions of their R&I projects at early stages, when anticipation and reflexivity are the core RRI dimensions.

Abstract:

The higher education setting is a unique environment in which individuals are tasked with facilitating change. Numerous internal and external factors are causing institutions to need to change how they perform tasks and deliver educational opportunities to students. Therefore, institutional leaders must explore techniques for facilitating change. Within institutions, the people are the ones who lead change initiatives. However, there is limited empirical research on how personnel within institutions perceive change management programs.

This study provides empirical research regarding how personnel in higher education institutions perceive change management initiatives. More specifically, this study was a program evaluation of personnel at a single institution with a Six Sigma change management program. Document analyses as well as one-on-one and focus group interviews were used to evaluate the Six Sigma program. The interviews were used to understand how personnel perceive the Six Sigma program in the higher education setting and its ability to prepare them to facilitate change.

The themes developed from the interviews allowed for the conclusion to be drawn that Six Sigma does help prepare individual to facilitate change. Although, participants found the program in its entirety to help prepare them to facilitate change, they also acknowledged many shortcomings of the program. The helpful aspects included: the training program, the trainer(s), providing a process to follow, started the change conversation, knowledge can change, and confidence to lead change. The challenges included were rigidity of the program, statistical calculations, ability to influence change, and scope of the program. Additionally, participants did not perceive Six Sigma to align with the types of problems found in the higher education setting.

Abstract:
Climate services, often refers as decision support tools, are developed to provide information with a view to aid in decision making and policy planning for adaptation due to climate variability and change. This study investigated different publicly available climate services and decision support tools based on previously proposed evaluation framework. This evaluation framework originally consists of four design elements which are divided into nine evaluation metrics for this study. These evaluation metrics are: identification of decision making context, discussion of the role of climate information in decision making, discussion of non-climatic factors, uncertainty of the data presented, accessibility of information, discussion on the development process, sustainability/ ongoing process, discussion of funding sources, and evaluation of the tool through survey, modeling or contingent valuation method. Tools were then given "High", "Medium", and "Low" score for each of the criterion. A total of 19 tools were evaluation for this study. Tools performed relatively well in "characteristics, tailoring, and communication of the climate information" and "governance, process, and structure of the climate service" whereas they got average scores in "problem identification and the decision-making context" and "value of the service provided". Additionally, four case study evaluation of tools showed detail evaluation of how the tools performed against each of the criterion. The results of this study showed the relative strengths and weakness of the evaluated tools which can be used to improve existing climate services to aid in adaptation decision needs for climate change. This will also help in better decision making and policy planning for different sectors impacted by the changing climate.

Abstract:
This study takes as a starting point that climate change must be seen as interrelated with other social, technological, political, and ecological challenges of our times, and that it is closely linked to the local arena of policy and planning. By this, the study is guided by the notion that sustainability transitions are needed to combat climate change. The aim of this study is to explore if and how local carbon budgets can be a tool for municipal governance in facilitating sustainability transitions. Through an analysis of narratives of change and modes of governing, the aim is pursued by studying how the local carbon budgets developed at the Climate Change Leadership node at Uppsala University approaches a framework for transition, and how these local carbon budgets have been received by municipal planning and policy actors in two case studies: Nyköping and Järfälla municipality. The study uses a qualitative case study approach with semi-structured interviews, document analysis and participatory observation as its methods. From the results and analysis, three narratives of change emerged: Tweak the system, Re-invent the system, and Shake the system. The three narratives suggest different pathways for sustainability transitions, as well as different approaches to local governance. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that the local carbon budgets can be several different tools for sustainability transitions, and what kind of tool it becomes is dependent on what narratives of change and approach to local governance that shapes it. Finally, the study highlights the importance of using local carbon budgets to their full potential, allowing them to question, challenge and reimage what kind of change is needed and how it can come about, if more transformative sustainability transitions are to be reached.

Abstract:
In the business sector there is increasing pressure for organisations to embrace Sustainable Development - but what does it really mean for the Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Sector? While this concept has received considerable attention in the academic literature, legislation and common language, it has perhaps inevitably lost some of its precision. Within business ventures in the industrialised world, sustainable development has only been applied in a few bigger enterprises. Given that Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) make up the majority of manufacturing capacity in industrial economies it is -worthwhile to examine the concept in order to assess its relevance to the specific needs of SMEs. The author proposes in this research that a very successful way for SMEs to contribute positively towards sustainable development and indeed to survive in a highly competitive environment is to embrace waste minimisation. The author reports that smaller businesses appear to see waste minimisation as peripheral rather than integral to sound and competitive business practice. She argues that waste minimisation can in fact be the key driver for sustainable change within the Small and Medium-Sized sector. The author reports upon her participation in two European Regional Development-funded projects, namely the Environmental Enterprise Project, and the Environmental Mentoring Project, assisting SMEs to establish waste minimisation programmes. These projects served the purpose of gathering raw data for analysis. The projects spanned 3 years and, during that time, a novel -waste minimisation methodology was developed -which generated cost savings and environmental benefits. The principal findings of this research are (i) the waste rninimisation methodology can be effectively used to achieve cultural change within the organisation, (ii) defining waste as "anything that doesn't add value to the customer" enabled the companies to more readily understand waste and thus positively contribute to business improvement.

Abstract:
This research project aims to contribute to the field of communication and social change through the analysis of different humoristic subversive mechanisms used by feminist comedians in Spanish society and their potential as a transformative tool in the country’s socio-political context. The personal stories of three feminist comedians interviewed for this research are analysed through the feminist standpoint theory, valuing the epistemic knowledge of women’s experiences and the potential of their communication through comedy as a contestation tool. Understanding knowledge as socially situated, through the experiences of the interviewed women, this research provides an analysis of the evolution of subversive mechanisms through comedy to contest the existing sociopolitical barriers.Comedy provides a safe space for the communication of subversive feminist messages that generate alternative points of view contesting existing hegemonic structures of knowledge and contribute to break gender stereotypes regaining subjectivity for women. Sharing marginal personal stories could promote connections among women through the identification of the oppressions suffered, creating a sorority movement that contributes to the evolution of feminism.

Abstract:
Thesis (MComm (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
This study recognises that innovation and renewal is instrumental in gaining competitive advantage. However, large firms often face a renewal dilemma. Despite the fact that many firms recognise the need for innovation and renewal, they find it challenging to implement innovation. Thus, the need for renewal is complicated by finding a suitable business development tool to bring about the renewal needed. The problem is further aggravated by a fundamental managerial conflict of exploration and exploitation. This conflict causes a reluctance to engage in exploration activities (searching for new resources, knowledge, and competence), due to the operational focus of exploiting current resources, knowledge, and competence. To overcome the renewal dilemma, this study investigated the relationship and linkages between Internal Corporate Venturing (ICV) and corporate renewal to determine how Internal Corporate Venturing (ICV) can be used as a tool to initiate corporate renewal and overcome the renewal dilemma. The study made use of a qualitative, mixed-method methodology and investigated the research problem in two phases. The first phase of this study used Grounded Theory to propose a theoretical framework that illustrated how ICV provides a firm with a strategic process that effectively balances exploration and exploitation activities, providing the linking mechanisms needed between a firm’s corporate context and its external environment, enabling the firm to initiate corporate renewal. In the second stage of this study, the theory was assessed, by comparing the proposed theoretical framework to a case study involving an internal venturing programme at an established financial services firm in Southern Africa. Based on a comparison between the proposed theoretical framework and the case study, this thesis concludes that ICV could theoretically be used to address the renewal dilemma; however, it was not possible to confirm this proposition, due to the stage in which the corporate venturing programme the case examined found itself,. The case study did however suggest that ICV could enhance a firm’s ability to instigate corporate renewal, through its ability to create idiosyncratic endowments from a firm’s endowment base.

Abstract:
In recent years the NHS has moved towards a patient-centred approach, placing the emphasis on changing health -related behaviour and developing the communication skills of healthcare staff. Registered Dietitians (RDs) have an important role in supporting patients with health -related behaviour change and are required to communicate effectively with patients. The aim of this research, using a mixed methods approach, was to explore and develop the area of Communication Skills for Behaviour Change (CSBS) within one-to-one consultations between patients and RDs in the UK. A cross-sectional survey of British Dietetic Association (BDA) members was undertaken to ascertain their views on the use of CSBC in dietetics and preferred teaching methods at both pre- and post- registration level. A tool for the assessment of CSBC within dietetic patient consultations (DIET-COMMS) was developed and tested for its psychometric properties and utility in practice. Finally semi-structured interviews were undertaken with experienced RDs who had undertaken inter-rater reliability testing with DIET-COMMS to explore their views on best practice for CSBC in dietetics.

Abstract:
Tourism in Cornwall represents over 24% of Cornwall's annual GDP. It is "the county's largest single industry", providing work for one in five Cornish inhabitants, and is responsible for almost a quarter of the money the county makes each year (Objective One, 2001, p. 10). However, in its current form, this vibrant but carbon-intensive business sector does not contribute to low-carbon development in Cornwall. It remains un-sustainable in a number of environmental, social and economic ways (Cornwall Sustainable Tourism Project, 2011a; 2014b). Thus, there isa recognized need for "sustainable tourism" (Butler, 1999), also defined as "ethical and responsible tourism" (Goodwin et al, 2003), due to the global growth of tourism and its various damaging by-products. According to Moscardo (1996) and Pearce (2005), one of the most effective ways to achieve sustainability in tourism is by influencing the behaviour and attitudes of visitors and tourism operators. Therefore, distinguishing Tourism as a form of consumption, this research project studies tourists as consumers, and aims at encouraging sustainable consumption in order to promote sustainable tourism in Cornwall. Since human behaviour, not technology, lies at the heart of sustainable consumption, this project addresses the challenge of promoting sustainable tourism from a behavioural point of view, not a technical one; understanding and influencing the behaviour of tourists visiting Cornwall towards more environmentally and socially friendly patterns. More specifically, due to the fact that sustainable consumption requires sustainable behaviour not just at the 'point-of-sale' but most importantly during the 'use-phase' of a product/service/system's lifecycle (Pettersen and Boks, 2008, p.119), this project focuses on influencing C02-related Human-Artefact interactions within the context of Cornish accommodation-provision industry, the second largest sector of Tourism that contributes to C02 emissions and climate change (Cohen et al, 2014). In the contemporary framework of sustainable design, many authors argue for the importance of design as a powerful means of furthering behaviour change towards more sustainable practices (Lilley, 2009; Thackara, 2005; Walker, 2006; Bhamra et al. 2008). Thus, this research project addresses social and environmental issues as they pertain to Tourism and aims to demonstrate the importance of Sustainable Design as a medium to change touristic behaviour, lessen its impact and support sustainability in Tourism. As original design research, this thesis draws upon a multi-disciplinary literature review, including the emerging field of 'Design for Sustainable Behaviour' (DfSB), Behavioural Economics (Dolan et al's 'MINDSPACE model'), Environmental and Social Psychology, Social Science (Cialdini's 'Six Universal Laws of Influence'), and Community-based Social Marketing, bringing together their developed understandings on what it takes to communicate and influence human behaviour, along with illustrated examples, into a comprehensive chart called "Elements of Persuasion". In turn, "Elements of Persuasion" creates the basis upon which new knowledge is consolidated in the form of a webtool called "Triggers for Change"; a digital platform, developed and evaluated through an iterative Human-Centred Design process, that aims to become an online resource framework for the Cornish tourism industry, that improves the persuasiveness of their sustainability communications with tourists visiting Cornwall. This would therefore minimise the industry's contribution to C02 emissions and climate change and, thus, further Sustainable Tourism in Cornwall.

Abstract:
This master thesis deals with a design of technological process description for a mechanical engineering part called „pressure plate“. The component is analyzed in regards to its mechanical engineering design and used material. Some brief theoretical prerequisites for an effective solution of the problem are summarized in the paper. A detailed research of current technological methods is provided, together with an analysis of the State-of-the-Art in manufacturing, introduction of technological possibilities of the company and a timeline records of the manufacturing process. In regards to the current methods and technologies, changes to the technological process are applied. Among these changes is a unification of machinery used in the process. This leads to an innovation of the methodology and the ways to clamp the component. Other applied alternations focus on a stabilization of the drilling process, which is reached by a choice of new tools and adjustment of cutting parameters. Furthermore, a variable coding of tools in case of automatic tool change is designed. This paper then provides two possible solutions based on proposed changes and alternations. These solutions, together with the tools mentioned, are subjects to a techno-economical assessment.

Abstract:
This study aims to answer the question of how pre-deployment gender training affects knowledge and attitudes regarding gender in the mission area among military personnel in peace support operations (PSOs). A common explanation to why attitude change occurs is through the introduction of new information. It is hypothesized that gender training leads to increased knowledge levels and more positive attitudes towards gender mainstreaming in PSOs. Unique longitudinal data is collected through a survey conducted among participants of a gender training session in the Swedish Armed Forces. The theory is tested through difference in means test of the participants test scores on knowledge and attitudes as well as a list experiment included in the survey. The study finds a substantial effect on change in knowledge levels and marginal support for attitude change due to the training. However, the result of the list experiment questions suggests that the marginal support on attitude change could in part be due to social desirability bias. The study concludes that increased attention needs to be placed on integration of gender perspectives into the general training and everyday service of peace support operation personnel.

Abstract:
With 60% of the youth population under 25 (OECD 2007), West Africa possesses an abundance of potential, but also faces major challenges. It is currently unable to provide this youth with adequate opportunities or provide them with a voice that could influence their regions to their own advantage. This research explores aninitiative developed with the aim of engaging the youth of West Africa in the promotion of children's rights through the medium of Rap music. This initiative was launched in 2006 at the behest of AURA, a network of seventeen African Rap artists who have come together for the promotion of Hip Hop and to put their musical talents at the service of the development of Africa. AURA’s first project was an awareness raising campaign focusing on the promotion of children's rights called Poto Poto which means mud in Wolof. My research focused on audience response to the Poto Poto cultural products through the participation of eight young people in a focus group organised in September 2010. Although based on a very small number of respondents, findings indicate interesting and useful trends with regards to Rap as an effective tool for social engagement.

Luhandjula, Yasmine. "Assessing the Prospects for Climate Action in the form of Climate Litigation as a tool to safeguard Human Rights." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/76560.

Full text
Abstract:
Climate change poses major threats to human life in the form of food and water shortages, health issues, loss of property and more. Climate change amplifies existing environmental, social, economic and political challenges and has increased the risk of displacements, accelerates social injustices, inequalities, and threatens human rights, including the right to life itself. Consequently, States can no longer overlook their obligations to effectively address climate change to safeguard human rights. States have agreed to mobilize stronger and more ambitious climate actions. However, their pledges on carbon emission caps, adaptation practices and climate change funds under the Paris Agreement, are not as ambitious as they ought to be. The aim of this research to assess the value and effectiveness of climate litigation as a substantial form of climate action to safeguard human rights. This research reveals that there has been a significant increase in climate litigation procedures and outcomes which reflect multiple ways in which climate litigation has influenced States to enhance and adopt laws to increase climate action on mitigation and adaptation practices. This research also reveals that climate litigation is amplified through public and civil society mobilisation as well as collaboration efforts between lawyers, scientists and activists across the world, and it is recognised as a valuable tool for those who seek accountability and justice for climate-induced harms.

Hostettler, Yara, and Maurik Britt Van. "Gamification for Sustainability - An experts' perspective on the opportunities and challenges of gamification as a tool to foster sustainability practices within organisations."

Abstract:
Gamification and sustainability are two topics that have gained a lot of attention in the past few years, both from the corporate sector and the academic community. Yet, the connection between the two concepts has seldom been made. This study addresses this research gap, by presenting the novel concept of gamification and connecting it to established theories in the field of organisational change. It then creates a discussion around the question of the potential of gamification as a tool to foster sustainability practices within organisations. To answer this question, this thesis followed a qualitative research design. By performing semi-structured interviews with experts in the field of gamification, the study explored different aspects of gamification, namely its definition, the opportunities and challenges it faces in regards to sustainability, the organisation’s responses towards the concept and the hypotheses for the further development of gamification. The results of this study suggest that gamification has great potential to foster sustainable practices within organisations. With its element of fun, gamification has the power to engage employees in sustainability issues, create a deeper understanding of the topic and relate it directly to the employees’ personal values and decision-making process. By offering different perspectives and helping employees see the bigger picture, gamification can inspire a sense of meaningfulness and contribution to something bigger than oneself. However, this can only happen when the tools are designed and used in the right way. Building an understanding of the user and implementing the fitting game design elements to create an impactful experience for the player is, however, a complex and time-consuming process, and therefore put forth as one of the biggest challenges. Furthermore, gamification should strive to expand beyond the commonly used game design elements of points, badges and leaderboards to tap into the user’s intrinsic rather than extrinsic motivation.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The objective of this study is to gain an understanding of the role and function of Communities of Practice in managing organizational knowledge. This thesis views the organization as a learning system and focuses on key characteristics of a learning organization and Communities of Practice. The interrelationship as well as the details of these themes is described in detail. Some organizations seek to become learning organizations. Yet, implementation is elusive and is not often based on research about what constitutes a learning culture. The goals of this study is to review and analyze the key characteristics of learning organizations and Communities of Practice how they develop, and where does one start if a learning organization is to be created. A qualitative research methodology to answer the why and how question is followed to describe, explain and interpret the findings. The literature review covers specific definitions, aspects and general factors concerning CoP's and learning organizations.
