Abstract:
Modern information systems strive to provide effective use of resources. Supplied with analysis tools, geographical information systems (GIS) can serve its stakeholders with minimal requirements. In this study, GIS capabilities were employed for Turkish Flora. Data related with the threatened plants that are indigenous to Turkey were gathered from the relevant literature and reshaped into a dataset in which spatial locations were represented in a geographically referenced format. Afterwards, this output was used to investigate the affects of different factors on the distribution patterns of these plants by means of functions of GIS and multivariate analysis. At last, overlay analysis was employed in order to reveal the congruence between official protection reserves, spatial locations of the plants in danger and areas of importance for other elements of wildlife specifically birds. Outcomes of the study is three-fold. First of all, a simple algorithm was established which can be used in the formation of a unified database of widely distributed floristic data in Turkey. Geographically referenced data and the analysis results produced in the study is another value added for Turkish botanics. From another perspective, effectiveness of GIS in handling different types of non-standard data were scrutinized. Overlay analysis of locations of the plants and the protection reserves constituted the managerial aspect of the study by pointing large gaps in the actual protection coverage and proposing candidate regions for official reserve choices of the future. In essence, GIS was deemed to be an effective tool for parties working on non-standard spatial data.

Yavuz, Nilay. "The Use Of Non-monetary Incentives As A Motivational Tool: A Survey Study In A Public Organization In Turkey." Master's thesis, METU, 2004. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12605141/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate to what extent non-monetary incentives are utilized in the public sector of Turkey and whether non-monetary incentives have the potential to increase the motivation of public employees as much as the monetary incentives. Incentive is any means that makes an employee desire to do better, try harder and expend more energy. Non-monetary incentives such as participation in decision making, verbal or written recognition of good work etc. are the kinds of incentives that do not involve direct payment of cash. To realize the objectives of the thesis, a survey study was administered at the General Directorate of Investment and Enterprises, under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. According to the results of the study, most of the employees think that the level of utilization of the non-monetary incentives in their organization is inadequate. Also, the findings suggest that they value non-monetary incentives as much as monetary incentives. Thus, within the limitations of the survey study, it may be concluded that non-monetary incentives have the potential to increase the motivation of personnel in this public organization.

Bose, Rana. "Unloading using auger tool and foam and experimental identification of liquid loading of low rate natural gas wells." Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/5890.

Full text
Abstract:
Low-pressure, low-producing natural gas wells commonly encounter liquid loading during production. Because of the decline in the reservoir pressure and the flow capacity, wells can fall below terminal velocity. Identifying and predicting the onset of liquid loading allows the operators to plan and prepare for combating the liquid loading hence saving valuable reserves and downtime. The present industrial applications of artificial lift, wellhead pressure reduction by compressor installation at the wellheads and reduction in tubing size are costly and often intermittent. The thesis examines the above aspects to generate a workflow for identifying and predicting the liquid loading conclusively and also assessing the application of Auger Tool and foam combination towards achieving a cost effective and more efficient solution for liquid unloading. In chapters I-IV, I describe the process of using production surveillance software of Halliburton Digital Consulting Services, named DSS (Dynamic Surveillance Software), to create a workflow of identifying the liquid loaded wells based on well data on daily basis for field personnel and engineers. This workflow also decides the most cost effective solution to handle it. Moreover, it can perform decline analysis to predict the conditions of liquid loading. In chapters V-VIII of the thesis, I describe the effort of handling the problem of liquid loading in a cost effective manner by introduction of an inexpensive Auger Tool in the bottomhole assembly and using WhiteMax surfactant soapstick from J&J Solutions. Four different combinations of well completion and fluid were tested for performance in respect to liquid hold up, pressure loss in the tubing, unloading efficiency and critical flow requirement. The test facilities and instruments, along with the operational methods, are discussed in chapter VI. Except for the reduction of the operational envelope with the inclusion of Auger Tool, the performance improved with the insertion of Auger Tool. The best combination of Auger and foam system could be a result of flow modification by the Auger Tool caused by reduced pressure loss and increase in drag coefficient and also by reduced density and surface tension of foam.

Kendrick, Shelby. "“A Crime Too Terrible for Contemplation:” Samuel Ralph Harlow and Missionary Influence on the History of the Responsibility to Protect." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2014. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/honors_theses/57.

Full text
Abstract:
As a prominent and influential missionary in Turkey in the early 20th century, Samuel Ralph Harlow offers a new perspective that should be included in historical literature on foreign missionaries and human rights. Through his correspondence and academic works, Harlow’s story unveils internal conflict among United States officials and missionaries in regard to Turkish treatment of Greeks and Armenians in the interwar period. Samuel Ralph Harlow represents the position in support of American intervention to rescue Greeks and Armenians from massacre and deportation, but as his superiors’ views on the matter changed, Harlow was silenced. The U.S. may have decided not to intervene after all, but missionaries certainly played a role in the decision. Harlow was an early advocate for foreign intervention for the sake of protecting human rights, and his story shows how American missionaries helped mold U.S. support for protecting vulnerable populations abroad. The Samuel Ralph Harlow Papers at Amistad Research Center are virtually untouched by academics; thus, Harlow deserves a study in his own right. This study involved extensive research on Harlow’s original papers, the United States Government Official Foreign Relations Documents, and the historiography of human rights and missionaries in the Middle East, particularly Turkey.

Abstract:
From the claims of punk rocker GG Allin aiming to shed his own blood for Rock ‘n’ Roll to the religiously tinted narratives of Bruce Springsteen we come to find artists using religious references to color their artistic medium. A question arises: Could these utterances and narratives show a deeper meaning behind Rock ‘n’ Roll such that it can give individuals a way to obtain religious experience? This thesis aims at arguing for the ability of Rock ‘n’ Roll as having a way to incite feelings of religious experience and communitas. Through the usage of auto-ethnography coupled with subsidiary sources from academic to pop culture writers this thesis will investigate if such a creative form helps to enable individuals to experience transcendence and feelings of community while immersed in Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to develop the tool rotating mechanisms of a turret press. A systematic approach for the development is proposed, including specifying engineering specification, structural synthesis, detailed design, prototype machining, assembly, and testing. Firstly, engineering specifications are specified by employing Quality Function Deployment method, which transforms qualitative customer requirements into measurable engineering requirements. Then, the atlas of new designs is generated based on the creative mechanism design approach. Furthermore, a detailed design is performed by selecting a qualified design from the atlas. After that, the solid model of the design is drawn to validate the feasibility. Finally, a prototyping machine is made, and its testing is conducted. The experimental results show that the proposed design can effective produce the motion of the tool rotating, and its accuracies meet the design specification.

Tulomba, Willems Paulino. "Stabilization of the line of sight of a two axis gimballed gun-turret system." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/4879.

Full text
Abstract:
M.Ing.
A two-axis gimbal system in the form of a pitch-roll gimbal and a motion simulating platform were developed to extend the capability of an existing ground-to-air prototype gun-turret. The objective was to stabilize the line of sight (LOS) of the gimbal system despite disturbances introduced by the motion simulating platform in real time. The main sensor used for the stabilization is a two-axis accelerometer which was mounted directly on the inner gimbal (roll gimbal) to form a direct-mass stabilization architecture. The stabilization control algorithm was designed and executed in the Labview® environment on a PC, and the accelerometer data is used to drive the two DC motors used as the actuators of this control system. The design of the motion simulating platform was based on a simplified Stewart-Platform and uses pneumatic cylinders as actuating limbs. All sensors and actuators in the motion simulating platform and the gimbal system are integrated with the National Instrument’s CompactRio® and Labview®. The result was a simple stabilization controller capable of achieving basic stabilization of the LOS. However, the hardware and software of this project are capable of more complex control algorithms and that forms the bulk of the suggestions for further studies.

Machine tool, the foundational industry of the country and the core of machinery development, has inseparable relations with manufacturing industry. Machine tool field is one of Taiwan’s predominant industries. The manufacturing, marketing and consumption abilities of Taiwanese machine tool have taken a very crucial part in the global market. According to American GARDNER magazine in 2004, the output value of Taiwanese machine tool reached US$2.85 billion and this made Taiwan overtake the US to become the world’s fifth manufacturing country, just behind Japan, Germany, Italy and China. The export value of Taiwanese machine tool in 2004 achieved US$2.23947 billion, and this turned Taiwan into the forth export country in the world. The import value of Taiwanese machine tool went up to US$1.98 billion, and which made Taiwan the world’s top three machine tool import country. The total consumption of Taiwanese machine tool was raised to US$2.53 billion, leading Taiwan to the No. 7 consumption country in the global market. In recent decades, Taiwanese machine tool builders have been distributing the sales network in the mainland market ambitiously; however, under the impact of the mainland’s macroeconomic adjustment measures, it has been an imperative issue for Taiwanese machine tool builders to reconsider the distribution to reduce the market risks. With the immigration of global manufacturing industry, Turkey has succeeded China and became a new choice for global manufacturing industry. Located in the center of Europe and Asia, Turkey can offer not only an attractive production environment but great sales potential for its emerging market. This research is from Taiwanese machine tool builders’ point of views, through Qualitative Research, adapting Semi-structured Interview, attempting to present their entry modes into the Turkish market and the decisive factors of their entry modes. Different from quantified research, the paper, by collecting information, references study, actual observation and interview to access the means that Taiwanese machine tool builder’s operation in the Turkish market and their valuable market experience, is expected to acquire more thorough penetration of the entry modes. In addition, actual interviews to the local end user in Turkey are also executed. Learning from the actual experience of target customer and their suggestions as well as the inter-comparison of real market experience among Taiwanese machine tool builders, this study is desired to furnish Taiwanese machine tool builders a reference of decision-making for their entry to overseas markets. The research also disclosed two points: 1. The advantages of enterprise competition affected the strategy of entry mode 2. The features of overseas target market influenced the decision-making of entry mode. Furthermore, from the real interview to Taiwanese machine builders and Turkish end users, it is uncovered that Taiwanese machine builders are tended to run the Turkish market with more active joint venture mode in view of culture differences and selection of partners, when their competition conditions and the target market are getting more mature. The Turkish end users propose that Taiwanese machine tool builders should build a cooperative relation with local partner by joint ventures as well. By doing this, it will be easier to establish reliability with customers, enter deep into the market and be recognized by local customers, actively involve in the market, understand customer’s demand and keep excellent interaction with the market. All these actions will increase the possibility of enlarging market shares, grow and coexist with the Turkish industry.

Rash, Kimberly 1981. "Reconstructing the Assemblage of Iron Artifacts from the Late Hellenistic Shipwreck at Kızılburun, Turkey." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/148373.

Full text
Abstract:
Artifacts found within the context of a shipwreck offer valuable insight into specific events surrounding a vessel’s journey and also have broader implications regarding the time period of the ship’s sinking. A collection of iron objects, excavated from the wreckage of a late Hellenistic ship carrying marble from the quarries at Proconnesus to the site of Claros, provides details of the implements vital to this ship’s passage. It was necessary that the completely corroded and encrusted iron artifacts undergo months of conservation, in the form of replication, stabilization of the iron where it survived, and restoration before they could be cataloged and researched thoroughly. The largest of the iron concretions was found to contain an anchor belonging to the ship. Being found on the same ship with wooden composite anchors, the iron anchor excavated at Kızılburun represents an important step in the transition in the use of wooden and lead composite anchors to their eventual replacement by anchors made solely of iron. The remaining identified objects comprise a collection of tools as well as three fasteners, all of which provide insight into the necessary equipment of an ancient wooden ship. Within the scope of this thesis, the conservation of each iron object is detailed, and a discussion of the implements enhances the understanding of their use aboard a seagoing vessel. Further research into similar objects and the development of each tool type offers insight into their value to the ancient seaman. Finally, a catalog of the artifacts is included, in order to provide measurements and technical drawings so that perhaps the currently unidentified artifacts can be compared to examples from other sites.

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a predictive model that won’t be too complicated for people to use and can be more accurate to predict the demand for the time series data of Taiwan''s machine tools from January 1998 to December 2018. The prediction methods used in this paper include time series, neural network (back propagation network), and SARIMABPN hybrid model that mixes the two methods that mentioned before. In addition, variable industrial production index, real effective exchange rate index, and stock index have been included to see will the model be more accurate. R language program has been use to analyze and predict this data set. After dividing the data into training set and test set. Using training set at first to choose the parameters combinations that may be most suitable for this data by adjusting the parameters such as learning rate, threshold, stepmax to get the most suitable result for each model. And then detect if the parameters combinations we choose through training set are still precise in test set. And then compare which model is the best to this data by using the criteria for comparing the accuracy of various models like average absolute percentage error (Mean Absolute Error; MAE), Mean Square Error (MSE), and Average Absolute Error (MAE). After comparison, found that the SARIMABPN hybrid model with considering industrial production index, real effective exchange rate index, and stock index variable gets the best results no matter on MAPE, MSE or MAE of the eight models which are built in this paper.
