Abstract:

A qualitative research was conducted to better understand the communication process connected with organizing musical festival for mass audience and the tools used to gain successful communication. Based on data collected by an interview with organizers and data found on the festival web site, theory about communication models of PR Smith and tools used in communication process, described by Kotler, were compared. One of the biggest music festivals in Europe – an Hungarian festival: the Sziget – has been chosen to evaluate its communication.

The findings show that, in terms of communication model, the company chooses the most appropriate to reach mass audience model. Mass communication model with small modifications seem to be the most appropriate for such a big organization like musical event. Communication tools used in case of a big festival also should concern about reaching mass audience. In order to do that, the tools focussed on more personal communication, such as direct marketing or personal selling can be given up in favour of tools such as advertising, publicity and PR or sales promotion, which give possibility to reach bigger audience in shorter period of time.

Abstract:
In distance learning, ICT tools are used to bridge the instructional gap caused by physical distance between the lecturer and the student. Therefore, more effective communication tools can help to enhance the success of a distance learning curriculum. Communication barriers such as disconnectedness, conceptual confusion and lack of social pressure to perform, can negatively affect the success of distance learning. Careful design and implementation of contextually appropriate communication tools is vital in a distance learning curriculum. The University of Cape Town (UCT) Conversion Masters in Information Technology (MIT) originally used a tool called Vula for communication between staff and students, as well as student-to-student communication. Vula is UCT's implementation of the Sakai learning management system. Between 2016 and 2018, a major shift was observed in the adoption and use of communication tools within the programme. There was a noticeable decrease in dialogue between students and lecturers on Vula, and an increase in student-to-student communication using WhatsApp. In 2018, the Slack communication tool wasintroduced to the MIT degree with the objective of increasing communication and collaboration between students and lecturers. This study investigates the adoption and use of the three communication tools (Vula, WhatsApp and Slack) within the context of the University of Cape Town MIT programme. The research aims to provide an understanding of communication needs and practice that can inform the design of distance learning programmes and enable them to harness the potential of social communication tool features. The study describes the nature of communication within the UCT MIT degree. The research also explores the functional features of the tools and how they are used, and the frequency of interaction on the various communication platforms within the MIT programme. This is complemented by a survey of current MIT students and their perceptions. The research analysed 2605 communication messages in Vula (UCT's name for the Sakai learning management system), Slack and WhatsApp communication tools over the three-year transition period 2016-2018. Feedback from a student survey, in which 11 respondents completed a questionnaire after an interview, is also presented. Based on questionnaire responses from MIT students, Vula is viewed as the best tool for administrative matters, WhatsApp is preferred for sharing information and checking on peers, and Slack is perceived as best for communication with all types of participants - students, lecturers and tutors. Most respondents rated WhatsApp as accessible, convenient and providing a good experience, while far fewer did so for Vula and Slack. WhatsApp was also seen to be the tool students used to reinforce or follow up on communications posted on the other tools.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the perceptions of students about using mobile communication tools in web-based instruction. A mobile learning portal that can be used by different mobile devices was designed for this purpose. This portal included a mobile discussion forum and a course information system. Sixty undergraduate and five graduate students from METU/CEIT department used this portal as a supportive learning activity in three different courses throughout two-three, and four-week periods. The discussion subjects related to course content were created by instructors in these courses and students used this portal by sending messages or creating new subjects. Assignment results and announcements were inserted into the system by the instructors of these courses. A user evaluation instrument was developed by the researcher and validated by field experts. At the end of the study, perceptions of students were collected about mobile learning, mobile learning technologies and mobile discussion forums by using this instrument. Descriptive statistics were calculated according to the responses of students. The study results show that most of the students enjoyed using mobile technologies in education and they want to use mobile technologies in other courses. Although they like using mobile technologies, they did not increase the level of learning and motivation of the students much. Furthermore, mobile technologies did not increase the communication between students and between students and teachers despite their highly developed communication capabilities. Students could easily use the mobile technologies but small screen sizes and limited keypads hindered them from performing the operations. According to students, the cost of using mobile technologies is quite important whereas the data communication security is not important.

Abstract:
Electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) has increasingly become an important topic in marketing and consumer research. However, theory construction and methodology development in this area are still in their infancy. This leaves some basic and important questions unanswered including whether eWOM communication is effective, what roles are played by different communication cues, and how valuable information from text reviews can be generated. This study intends to answer these fundamental questions.Based on the Brunswik's Len Model, this study developed the Process Model of eWOM Communication. It extends the Brunswik's Lens Model in several important ways and provides a systematic tool to examine the effectiveness of eWOM communication processes. Furthermore, a simplified model of eWOM communication was developed to test the validity of automatic text analysis as a promising tool in studying eWOM communication.Two focus group interviews and a throughout literature review were conducted first to identify the communication cues employed by eWOM partners. Then, two web-based self-administered surveys were carried out to collect data from both eWOM senders and readers. Last, the data from both eWOM senders and readers were matched, forming a final dataset with 90 reviews. Correlations, regressions, and path analyses were employed to evaluate the models and test the hypotheses.Results showed that eWOM communication is effective, and the relative strength of information flow varies in different eWOM communication links when communicating different types of information.This study identified a list of eWOM communication cues and found that consumers employ different cues in communicating different types of information. EWOM readers' inference structure in decoding may not exactly mirror eWOM senders' encoding structure. Moreover, communication cues especially verbal cues play an important role in eWOM communication and explain additional variance in eWOM partners' intentions and perceptions beyond and above the star ratings. In general, negative emotion words are the most important cues across various situations.In addition, this study provides initial evidence for the validity of automatic text analysis in studying eWOM. Linguistic indicators such as Negations, Negative Emotions, and Money can explain additional variance in eWOM partners' attitudes and emotions beyond and above the star ratings.

Abstract:
The thesis is concerned with the current use of ray-optics based propagation prediction tools for the determination of wideband characteristics of the wireless urban propagation channel. Reliable prediction of propagation channel parameters such as delay spread, coherence bandwidth etc. is important for the deployment of wideband systems. Deterministic propagation models, based on ray-optical techniques make use of site-specific topographic databases, and aimed to yield reliable area coverage and wideband propagation channel parameters. Such models determine wideband wireless channel characteristics by Fourier transforming the radio channel impulse response at a center frequency. This can lead to errors in the derived wideband parameters. A three-dimensional ray-optics based propagation prediction tool is developed. The model uses image theory, Geometrical Optics (GO) and the Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD) to determine wideband characteristics of the urban wireless communication channel. Higher order diffractions which can contribute significantly in shadow region are incorporated in addition to first order diffractions. The model is thoroughly validated with single frequency and swept frequency measurements in scaled down controlled environment. Systematic errors are identified in deriving wideband response. Errors (up to 27 dB and 4.1 rad) in the lit regions corresponds to the individual tiny deep nulls which are quite insignificant. In the shadow region average errors gradually increases away from the center frequency and rises up to 1 dB and 0.05 rad. Error sign reversal is observed in the transition regions. Errors corresponding to realistic bandwidths are less than 0.5 dB and 0.03 rad. Errors in frequency correlation function corresponds to shadow regions and frequency separation of 0.25 GHz to 7 GHz. It is concluded that the coherence bandwidth provides more information of the dispersive nature of the channel compared to delay spread.

Catalyzed by the invention of magnetic tape recording, audio production has transformed from technical to artistic, and the roles of producer, engineer, composer, and performer have merged for many forms of music. However, while these roles have changed, the way we interact with audio production tools has not and still relies on the conventions established in the 1970s for audio engineers. Users communicate their audio concepts to these complex tools using knobs and sliders that control low-level technical parameters. Musicians currently need technical knowledge of signals in addition to their musical knowledge to make novel music. However, many experienced and casual musicians simply do not have the time or desire to acquire this technical knowledge. While simpler tools (e.g. Apple's GarageBand) exist, they are limiting and frustrating to users.

To support these audio-production novices, we must build audio-production tools with affordances for them. We must identify interactions that enable novices to communicate their audio concepts without requiring technical knowledge and develop systems that can understand these interactions.

This dissertation advances our understanding of this problem by investigating three interaction types which are inspired by how novices communicate audio concepts to other people: language, vocal imitation, and evaluation. Because learning from an individual can be time consuming for a user, much of this dissertation focuses on how we can learn general audio concepts offline using crowdsourcing rather than user-specific audio concepts. This work introduces algorithms, frameworks, and software for learning audio concepts via these interactions and investigates the strengths and weaknesses of both the algorithms and the interaction types. These contributions provide a research foundation for a new generation of audio-production tools.

This problem is not limited to audio production tools. Other media production tools—such as software for graphics, image, and video design and editing—are also controlled by low-level technical parameters which require technical knowledge and experience to use effectively. The contributions in this dissertation to learn mappings from descriptive language and feedback to low-level control parameters may also be adapted for creative production tools in these other mediums. The contributions in this dissertation can unlock the creativity trapped in everyone who has the desire to make music and other media but does not have the technical skills required for today's tools.

While knowledge is one of an organization’s greatest assets, it remains a challenge to facilitate knowledge transfer between people within an organization. Social influence has been studied in its role of facilitating information diffusion, which is necessary for knowledge transfer to occur. Among this research, tie strength, a quantifiable characteristic of a social network that determines the link between two nodes, has been measured to determine the impact of social influence on knowledge transfer and information dissemination within a social network. Current research that explores the impact of social influence on information diffusion has been conducted within public social networks due to the availability of data that can be gathered from public social online network systems, such as Facebook. With the emergence of collaboration technologies that exist in online social network tools being utilized within organizations, there is an opportunity to digitally collect information regarding information dissemination within a collaborative network. This study captured data from an online social network, specifically a unified communication tool, being used within a collaborative social network at a mid-sized South Central corporation. A content analysis of Lync messages for 1,749 connections was performed to quantitatively measure the influence of tie strength on information dissemination within a collaborative social network. The results demonstrated that tie strength had a significant impact on information dissemination using a collaborative system. Multivariate analysis of variance showed that tie strength had the largest impact on information dissemination using the instant messaging modality of a collaboration system.

In today’s competitive business environment, banks operate in a severe rivalry due to various factors, including globalisation, fast technological developments and homogeneous nature of banks services. For this reason, building valuable brands is crucial in differentiating banks and adding value to the banking services. The research problem that emerged was: investigating the major bank marketing communication tools to examine their impact on building bank brand equity. The researcher went about in achieving this purpose by: identifying the major marketing communication tools used by banks that help build bank brand equity via the customer-based brand equity (CBBE) dimensions from customers’ perspective; and testing and analysing the hypotheses in order to develop the final research model. In order for this purpose to be attained, two research questions were answered: what are the major bank marketing communication tools that help build bank brand equity? Which hypotheses regarding the impact of the major bank marketing communication tools on building bank brand equity via the CBBE dimensions are supported in this study? This research was carried out in the Egyptian banking sector from the customer perspective. Mixed-method research was used. The first phase was the qualitative research approach, which consists of conducting and analysing semi-structured interviews. These interviews were carried out with fifteen bank customers based on judgmental sampling technique. The purpose of these interviews were to identify the major bank marketing communication tools that help build bank brand equity via the CBBE dimensions; to help develop a proposed conceptual framework; to help develop the research hypotheses; and to help develop the intended questionnaire survey. According to the findings, advertising, personal selling and direct marketing were the most popular marketing communication tools in the Egyptian society for banks. Once the needed insights were emerged, the second phase, the quantitative phase, was conducted. The researcher distributed and collected large-scale questionnaire survey. These questionnaires were carried out with 465 bank customers based on a quota sampling technique. These questionnaires were then analysed by using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to test and analyse the research hypotheses; and to help develop the final research model. Findings showed that the major bank marketing communication tools consist of personal selling, direct marketing and advertising respectively according to their importance on building bank brand equity. Given the fact that all CBBE dimensions are interrelated, not all of them directly impact bank brand equity. Only brand loyalty and brand perceived quality were found to have a significant positive direct effect on bank brand equity. When conducting this study, the researcher faced several limitations. The data were collected only in Cairo and Alexandria; only the major controllable marketing communication tools were assessed, and non-probability sampling was used.

A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters in Communication Science at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2013.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the extranet as a communication tool in higher education institutions. The study used the case study of myUnisa - an extranet used at the University of South Africa. This was a mixed-methods research and had applied the quantitative and qualitative methods. This was a multistage study which went through two stages. In the first stage the researcher utilised the questionnaire to collect data from the students. Initially, the questionnaire was intended to be self-administered to allow students to complete them on their own, but difficulties to meet some of the sampled students on one-to-one encounter alternatively led to telephonic interviews on which the role of the researcher was to interview, and to tick and write down the responses of the respondents. Four hundred students were sampled using the online randomizer programme available on the internet. Statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 18 was used to analyse qualitative data. In the qualitative phase, in-depth interviews with two key staff members from each of the department sampled were held and an analysis was done using thematic categorization. The study found that myUnisa is used by different UNISA departments and students for communications. However, although many students and staff members considered myUnisa useful, not all regarded it as effective. In-depth interviews with lecturers showed that myUnisa is both a useful and an effective online communication channel for engaging into communications with the students. An analysis of the responses led to the development of an extranet model for implementation in higher education institution. A number of recommendations were made and suggestions for future research considerations were also given.

Abstract:
The current models for health care hold at their core a pathologization of fat bodies informed by discriminatory methods and ideologies leading to an explicit lack of quality medical care for those who fail to meet normative standards of health and size. This project is interested in examining alternative public health models that provide interventions into those systems. Specifically, this work will seek to understand how the grassroots movement, Health at Every Size (HAES), serves to interrupt current limited understandings of health and weight. HAES individualized, weight-neutral approach to health and wellness exists in seeming opposition to contemporary ideas around healthcare practices. In studying this alternative model, conventional ideas of health care towards fat patients will be understood to be informed primarily by discriminatory structural and ideological practices. In addition, by highlighting the healthcare industries’ investment in the medical industrial complex, this project aims to deconstruct and critique notions of health while increasing access to care that is informed by the realities of bodily difference. In addition, this thesis will argue for zines as important health information dissemination tools by first mapping and complicating its history, expanding on zines as an artistic and politicized medium, and finally emphasizing its capacity to communicate through alternative knowledges and distribution networks.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the degree to which selected communication tools used by teachers who teach online are positively perceived by their students in improving feelings of self-efficacy and motivation, and which tools may be perceived to be significantly more effective than the others. Students from the Florida Virtual School, a leader in online course delivery for grades 6-12, were surveyed to find their perceptions about how their teachers' use of email, Instant Messaging, chat, the telephone, discussion area, whiteboard, and assignment feedback affected their motivation and success in an online high school course. Correlations were done to discover if there were any significant relationships between variables that relate to teacher interaction and motivation. In addition, distributions of student responses to survey questions about digital communication tools and demographics were examined. It was found that there is a high degree of correlation between frequency of teachers' use of digital communication tools and student's perception of their level of motivation. It was also found that the digital communication tools most frequently used by teachers in communicating with their students were email, the telephone, and assignment feedback, and that the students found these same tools the most helpful in their learning. In addition, no significant demographic differences were found in students' perception of teacher's use of tools to enhance learning and motivation in their courses except in the number of previous online courses taken. These findings can help direct online high school teachers in their selection of digital tools used to communicate with their students.

Effective internal communication is an important factor for organizational success. Organizations need to evaluate and improve their internal communication especially in an increasingly difficult and competitive economic environment. In this regard, measurement instruments enable organizations to monitor communication effectiveness of internal communication systems (Ruck & Welch, 2012). The focus for this study will be the concept of internal communication within an organization. In order to establish and identify the purpose of the study a literature review was        performed that examined the existing research within the field.The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that influence the effectiveness of internal communication from the employee perception at the logistic department of Electrolux. Three research questions were then conducted in order to answer the purpose. The study has been conducted through a case study in the form of in-depth interviews. The study was carried out through 11 interviews with employees from the logistic department of Electrolux Laundry System AB in Ljungby. In the current business environment a formal way of strategically handle the              communication that is practiced within an organization is needed in relation to higher competitive advantage. The study reveals that Electrolux logistic center is not practicing this in any higher degree in accordance to the theory of effective communication. No clear goal regarding communication or measuring communication was identified. In accordance to this practical managerial implication was concluded based on these findings. The presented research model done was suggested to be developed as a further research

When accidents occur, it is essential that fire and rescue service respond quickly and efficiently to the accident site to reduce suffering and save lives and property. Planning and coordinating of fire and rescue resources is therefore important in order to maintain a safe society. Firefighters in Sweden have by tradition worked in teams of five, and they have been allocated to fire stations strategically located in populated areas. However, this working approach has recently started to change and the fire and rescue services have started to deploy smaller groups of firefighters. These smaller units can be, for example, strategically located near high-risk areas or roads, or used for preventive work. The complexity of the resource planning process thus increases since the decision makers have to keep track of a large number of small units spread over the area. The new way of working has resulted in an increased need of support tools that can help the fire and rescue services in decisions regarding the resource management. In this thesis, optimization based decision support tools are developed in order to to support the fire and rescue service so they can efficiently manage, coordinate and dispatch fire and rescue resources with respect to the present demand for service. To find appropriate strategic and tactical locations for different types of response units, an optimization model that minimizes the response time to expected accidents is developed. The model considers both the response time for the first responding unit as well as the response time for the last responding unit. Furthermore, the model is flexible enough to incorporate any type of accidents or resources. The results show that the model can be used to produce practical support for various types of location decisions. To support the more complex operational planning, three optimization based decision support tools are developed. The tools can help the fire and rescue service to always maintain an adequate level of preparedness for handling accidents. To evaluate the preparedness, a quantitative measure has been defined and serves as the basis for the tools. The first tool can help illustrate the preparedness, the second tool to select appropriate vehicles and firefighters to dispatch to accidents, and the third tool to suggest how resources can be relocated to maintain an adequate preparedness for new accidents. The developed decision support tools are evaluated through tests and experiments with fire and rescue services in Sweden. Results from the experiments indicate that the three tools can support the fire and rescue service in operational decisions and in maintaining an adequate preparedness for handling accidents, but also that the planning time seems to increase when using the support tools. However, the participants’ experiences of the tools were in general positive, and they thought the tools were useful and that the tools could support their daily work. The perception of preparedness, which usually varies quite a bit among individuals, also seems to become more uniform with access to the tools.

Abstract:
Overlay networks is a popular method to deploy new functionality which does not currently exist in the Internet. Such networks often use the peer-to-peer principle where users are both servers as well as clients at the same time. We evaluate how overlay networks performs in a mix of strong and weak peers. The overlay system of study in this thesis is Bamboo, which is based on a distributed hash table (DHT). For the performance evaluation we use both simulations in NS-2 and emulations in the testbed PlanetLab. One of our contributions is an NS-2 implementation of the Bamboo DHT. To simulate nodes joining and leaving, NS-2 is modified to be aware of the identity of overlay nodes. To control experiments on PlanetLab we designed Vendetta. Vendetta is both a tool to visualize network events and a tool to control the individual peer-to-peer nodes on the physical machines. PlanetLab does not support bandwidth limitations which is needed to emulate weak nodes. Therefore we designed a lightweight connectivity tool called Dtour. Both the NS-2 and PlanetLab experiments indicate that a system like Bamboo can handle as much as 50% weak nodes and still serve requests. Although, the lookup latency and the number of successful lookups suffer with the increased network dynamics.

Product development is continually becoming more challenging as global competition requires more efficient design methods. The reuse of company knowledge, specifically the design rationale that occurs during projects is essential to success. This thesis presents a method for integrating engineering and communication tools for purposes of automating the capture of communication-based design rationale. The method is based on four basic principles: to integrate, to make data retrievable, to minimize user interaction, and to store as much DR as possible. The core method consists of two primary operations, the first being to capture the design rationale, and the second being to provide for effective retrieval. An implementation of this method that uses NX as the engineering tool and Skype VoIP software as the communication tool was created for the purpose of testing integration as a means of DR capture. The implementation was evaluated using four separate tests, which focus on efficiency of capture and retrieval, cost analysis, and user satisfaction. These results show that the tool provides improvement in each of the tested categories. From this testing I conclude that integrating communication and engineering tools is an excellent way to capture communication-based design rationale. The tool presented is more efficient than traditional methods in the test cases and provides a user-friendly solution to DR capture. This tool also has various other important applications, such as global collaboration and expectation management. It also provides an excellent framework for upcoming multi-user CAx tools.

Em Portugal, mais de 25 % dos habitats da Rede Natura 2000 dependem da manutenção de práticas associadas à agricultura extensiva, sendo o valor médio da UE-15 de 18 %. No seguimento dos objectivos da Rede Natura 2000, os Estados-membros apresentaram uma lista de sítios de importância comunitária (SIC) e de zonas de protecção especial (ZPE) de aves, com requisitos especiais em termos de gestão e restrições às actividades desenvolvidas dentro e nas suas fronteiras. De acordo com o Instituto de Conservação da Natureza a ZPE de Castro Verde, no Alentejo, é a área mais importante a nível nacional para a conservação de aves estepárias, como a Abetarda (Otis tarda), o Tartaranhão-caçador (Circus pygargus) ou o Peneireiro-das-torres (Falco naumanni). A principal unidade paisagística desta ZPE é caracterizada por um mosaico de campos de cultivo extensivo de cereais, restolho, terrenos lavrados e terrenos em pousio, estes últimos utilizados normalmente como pastagem de ovelhas. As principais ameaças à ZPE estão identificadas e resultam do processo dual de abandono dos terrenos agrícolas menos férteis e intensificação da agricultura nos restantes. Com o objectivo de avaliar os efeitos da agricultura tradicional e da sua intensificação, nomeadamente o aumento da utilização de herbicidas e aplicação de lamas de etar usadas como fertilizantes, foi desenvolvido um modelo conceptual e avaliado com a abordagem probabilística. Este modelo inovador foi utilizado numa avaliação de risco de alto nível onde foram tidos em consideração os parâmetros biológicos das populações de aves desta área protegida. Considerou-se um cenário em que a transferência de químicos ocorre maioritariamente ao longo da cadeia trófica, de acordo com os diferentes comportamentos alimentares das diferentes espécies, mas também dentro da mesma espécie quando se verificam hábitos alimentares diferentes (e.g. adultos e juvenis). Foi também estudada, através de um inquérito, a percepção aos riscos na ZPE de Castro Verde de diferentes intervenientes, de forma a contribuir para o desenvolvimento de um directório para comunicação do risco da agricultura tradicional num sítio Natura 2000.
In Portugal more than 25 % of Natura 2000 Network habitats depend upon the continuation of extensive farming practices whereas the average EU-15 value in 2004 was of 18 %. Following the Natura 2000 Network objectives, Member States have proposed a list of sites of communal interest (PSCIs) and special protection areas (SPA) for birds, with specific management requirements and necessary restrictions on activities carried out within and around their borders. According to the Portuguese Institute for Nature Conservation the SPA of Castro Verde in southern Portugal, Alentejo, is the most important Portuguese area for the conservation of steppe bird species such as the Great Bustard (Otis tarda), the Montagu’s Harrier (Circus pygargus) or the Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni). The main landscape of this SPA is characterized by a mosaic of extensive cereal fields, stubble, ploughed fields, and fallow land that is frequently used as pasture for sheep. The main threats to the SPA of Castro Verde are identified and result from the dual process of the abandonment of the less fertile agricultural soils with the intensification of agriculture in the remaining land. In order to assess the effects of traditional agriculture and its intensification, namely the increase in the input of herbicides and sewage sludge used as fertilizer, a conceptual model was developed and assed with a probabilistic approach. This innovative model was used in a high tier risk assessment by taking into account the biotic parameters of bird populations from this protected area. The transfer of chemicals was considered to occur mainly through a realistic trophic chain scenario according to the different feeding behaviour among different species and even within the same species when having different feeding habits (e.g. adults and juveniles). The perception of risks to the SPA of Castro Verde to different stakeholders was also studied with a questionnaire-based survey thus contributing for the development of a risk communication framework for risks posed by extensive agriculture in a Natura 2000 Network site.

Nurse-Physician Communication Tools to Enhance use of Nursing Evidence-Based Protocols by Tochi Onyenwe Ubani MSN, Walden University, 2011 BSN, Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2009 Project Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Nursing Practice Walden University February 2015 In the current health care environment, consumers are demanding collaboration among clinicians even when traditional attitudes minimize nurses' input on the direction of clinical care. Compounding this problem is that nursing practices have not always been derived from randomized clinical trials, but instead from personal experiences. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of nurses, physicians, and administrators on clinical protocols, including the use of nurse evidence-based practice (EBP) in practice settings. The study aimed at fostering clinical decisions anchored on shared knowledge, collegiate interactions, and emotions. A survey designed using nurse-physician communication tools was disseminated among a convenience sample of 50 nurses, 12 physicians, and 3 administrators. Content analysis was applied to survey responses. The findings revealed that effective communication between nurses, physicians, and administrators enhanced the use of nursing EBPs; these findings were used to generate the Nurse-Physician Communication Tools (NPCT) as a mechanism to enhance the translation of nursing EBP in clinical setting. The use of NPCT provided a mechanism for practice changes needed to improve clinical collaboration and enhance use of nursing EBPs in patient care.

This PhD research adopts an interdisciplinary approach to answer the following research question: to what extent could Members of the European Parliament incorporate social networking tools (SNT) as part of their communication resources in engaging with other actors when carrying out their work as legislators? The methodological framework chosen to conduct this study is exploratory and combines two qualitative methods: elite interviews and observation. Interviews with MEPs and their staff aimed to explore MEPs’ understanding of SNT use, their motivations and their perceived benefits of using SNT when carrying out their work as legislators. Interviews with officials of the EP and members of the European civil society were purposely designed as validating interviews. In total, 29 interviews were conducted in 2011-2012. Observation of MEPs’ communication patterns during parliamentary weeks has allowed me to assess, on the one hand their communication patterns from an organisational perspective and on the other hand the potential for introducing new communicative tools into MEPs’ communicative practices. Observation was conducted with two MEPs and their staff during two weeks each. The theoretical framework of this study relies strongly upon communication network theories and organisational studies that explore the adoption of SNT in the workplace. Based on a grounded theory approach, this exploratory study suggests an emergent model of use of SNT for MEPs in carrying out their legislative work, based on MEPs’ motivations and perceived benefits of using these tools. Findings suggest that there are four domains in which MEPs could use SNT in their legislative functions: to democratise lobbying practices in the EP, to raise their awareness of public opinion, to reshape their relationship with journalists and finally to coordinate their actions as representatives with the European civil society’s. Thus, this study explores the adoption of SNT by elected members of the European Parliament by focusing on their understanding of their use of SNT when carrying out their role as legislators.

The human mind is a churning engine, processing all forms of sensory input. Information that reaches these senses is powerful, facilitating and deepening understanding. Animations access sight. They provide a rich visual model that portrays not only information about the system graphically, but they also present information about the relationships and interactions in that model over time. However, the complexity of today's software for constructing animations limits their use and isolates animations to a small set of scenarios. One such eliminated scenario is being able to create and manipulate animations in real time, while a conversation takes place. The human mind comprehends from manipulation, trial, and error. Animations are productions. Instructors cannot manipulate and recreate animations within the time constraints of a classroom. Developers cannot recreate animations within the time constraints of a meeting. This thesis explores the engineering of a modeling environment prototype for creating animated models. By building an environment designed to leverage the capabilities of Microsoft's Tablet PC operating system, this thesis contributes a new approach to creating animations and visualizations. This prototype demonstrates a pen-based user interface that decreases the time and effort required to create an animation by enabling users to create an animation by simply drawing a model and animating it. The Tablet PC hardware and software provide developers with the capabilities necessary to create software that works as naturally as the pen and paper. With the Tablet PC's Ink technology, users can draw models and simply draw the paths where the objects in that model should follow. This thesis explores the design of the environment, the research prototype named Model Pad, and explores its importance, its contribution, and its unique design based on the capabilities of the Tablet PC. As mobile computers become increasingly central to the workplace, the ability to create animations quickly and easily while talking with others, while presenting in front of an audience or a class, or while working with a team of engineers allows animation to become a natural part of the way we visually communicate information. The Model Pad environment is merely a first step in the direction of creating fully pen-based modeling and animation tools. The concepts it builds form the foundation of understanding how to express animations that are more complex. This thesis and the Model Pad environment provide the initial framework for building pen-based animation tools on the Tablet PC, allowing simple models to be expressed in methods as simple as using a pen and paper. Despite the globalization and cultures’ convergence, it is scholarly recognized that cross-cultural issues are important in a business context, especially for companies extending their activities internationally. However, existing theory does not provide an explicit answer of how cultural differences between countries influence customers’ perception of different aspects of marketing communication mix. That is why the underlying task of the current paper is to investigate if cross-cultural differences within the same geographic region are big enough to affect customers’ perception of marketing communication mix used. To facilitate a data collection, Central and Eastern European region represented by Ukraine and Czech Republic were chosen. As a reference tourism industry was used, due to its’ current significance, scale and global nature. Data was collected by conducting secondary and primary research, both having quantitative nature. Secondary data was collected through statistical offices and official on-line sources. For the primary research purposes a questionnaire survey was conducted among pre-defined target audience in Czech Republic and Ukraine. 300 responses obtained provided a solid basis for the further analysis.  Based on the relevant theory and secondary research findings four hypotheses were developed to address the research question “Does cross-cultural differences within Central and Eastern Europe affect the marketing communication mix in a specific industry?”. The study results provided that cultural differences exist not only between different regions, but also found within the same geographic region. When considered from marketing perspective, they are significant enough to influence customers’ preferences and perceptions of different aspects of marketing communication mix. The results obtained are specific for a particular case, so they can not be applied to some other countries. However, when it comes to marketing communication perceptions, the results can be used as guidelines by other industries then tourism

This thesis explores the use of the World Wide Web asinfrastructure for collaboration among small or middle sizedgroups. A collection of Web-based tools has been developed,whose main characteristic is that they allow users to makeannotations to shared documents. These Web annotations form adialogue that is persistent and immediately accessible to theusers. Special interest has been devoted to observing howcollaborators make use of a common space where Web-documents aswell as Web-annotations are organized and stored. This commonspace has been called a domain.

We have also tried a novel method for the design ofcollaborative Web-based systems, called“designing frominside”. It is based on communication between the usersand the designer in the form of a dialogue, which is generatedand presented“inside”the system that is beingdeveloped. In this way, users can make comments about theirexperience using the tool while in the appropriate context.Comments by the users as well as the designer's replies areshared with other users. In this way the users become involvedunobtrusively in the design process of the tool.

One of the tools, DHS, has been used in longitudinal studieswithin courses where students also met regularly in theclassroom. In one contextthe students used the DHS as adiscussion or annotation tool for documents that they hadwritten. Within this framework, we also explored how secondlanguage students collaboratively made use of the tool toaccomplish a task that is normally done individually (readingcomprehension).

Col·lecció is the latest version of the DHS. Themost important change in this tool is that users can add theWeb-documents to the domain themselves. This gives a newperspective to the tools because it can work as a collectivebookmark system. This system has been used in three casestudies in which a distributed and co-located group discussed acollection of Web-documents.

Another system in the family is Col·laboració,which is oriented to supporting collaborative writing tasks. Itfocuses primarily on the communication needs co-authors mighthave around a shared document that is being produced. Thesystem also allows for on-line revision and for generatingversions of the document. This system has been used in 8 casestudies, where we have observed the users’interaction andexplored the possibilities that the Web offers to collaborativewriting. For example, co-authors can use the commenting spaceas a“window to the Web”, as the Web provides a hugeamount of information that can be relevant during the writingprocess.

One of the characteristics of all these tools is that theypresent the comments in chronological order. No threadingmechanism is used, although several users have requested athreaded presentation of the comments. This design choice isbased on the belief that with threading of comments, the focusof the discussion could drastically divert from its originaltopic, the document. In our observations, a dual discoursecontext is often found in the comments referring both to aprevious comment and to the shared document. To facilitateorientation in the discussions, we have also developed avisualization tool called Domain Interactivity Diagram (DID),designed to work together with the other systems.

The studies show that the Web offers a suitableinfrastructure for text-based discussions in which the documentcan be given a prime role. It also emerged that the integrationof email was appreciated by users mainly because it wasconsidered as a reminder of the task. In educational settings,students valued the possibility to go through many exampleswritten by other students in comparison with the traditionalway. Also the dialogue formed by the comments was astraightforward way to promote collaboration amongstudents.

Abstract:
The study focuses particularly on the effects digital tools may have on language learning for students with special needs. The qualitative empirical material was collected through interviews and observations in a Norwegian school. The observation involves four students from two school years (the first and the second students comes from year 8, and the third and fourth students comes from year 9). The data also comes from two different qualitative interviews with the headmaster of the same school. The main findings are that, digital tools are adapted for the majority of the students in the classroom by the school board. Students with disabilities, however, need more tools, and more support. Only the school board can change their own recommendations for the use of digital tools. A comparison between Norway’s and Sweden’s curriculum is also included, to contextualized the headmaster’s point of view upon the Norwegian curriculum when it comes to digital tools.

This master's thesis deals with the internal communication. The main goal is to examine and assess the current level of the internal communication in the international advisory organization, to identify any problems and try to propose more effective internal communication in the company. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical parts. The first part focuses on the clarification of key concepts such as communication, communication process, internal communication, assumptions and objectives of the internal communication, internal communication tools. In the practical part an international advisory company is presented and the current situation of the internal communication is described and there is evaluation of the internal communication by employees. In the conclusion of the thesis, there are suggested measures to improve the effectiveness of communication within the company.

The usage of social media such as YouTube, Twitter and Facebook has expanded drastically. Today almost every organization has a Facebook page and a Twitter account that complements their webpage and their physical stores. However, why and how are they using these social medias?  This research focuses on why and how organizations are using Facebook and Twitter in their business strategy. More specifically, what methods and organizational strategies are used. The requirement for our research was that the organization had to had some success on these social medias but due to time and budget limitations, the research is restricted to three local organizations that have a national presence. Conducting primary data with three face-to-face semi-structured interviews and obtaining secondary data such as books, theses and academic journals we had the data to make an analysis about how Facebook and Twitter could make these three organizations gain competitive advantage.  By correctly utilizing the tools that social networking sites (SNS) provide; organizations can make way for a differentiation path that provides competitive advantage, build brand awareness, and provide statistical tools for evaluating customer behavior. One of the benefits of SNS is that they are virtually free to implement, both from a capital and human resource investment point of view. This research shows that organizations utilizing SNS in order to gain competitive advantage need to focus on creating a committed and engaged user base. By keeping in mind the drivers of differentiation: timing, location, linkages and scale, organizations transform their competitive advantage into a sustained competitive advantage.

Abstract:
The objective of this research paper was to examine how effective communication can be perceived in construction projects by presenting an overview of the current proven methods and recorded experiences. The study was conducted by a combination of a literature review and qualitative data retrieval process that included questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. This examination process focused not only into the organizational structure but also into the project perspective. The findings present a general good performance in terms of organization and project communication as well as suggestions for communication improvement and can be used by researchers as future research in the area of successful construction project communication.
Syftet med rapporten är att undersöka synen på en effektiv komminikation på ett byggprojekt genom att presentera analys av befintliga metoder och dess utveckling med tiden. Studien har huvudsakligen utförts genom granskning av literaturstudier, kvalitativ enkätundersökning och intervjuer med berörda personer. Den utförda studien har inte enbart fokuserat på kommunikation inom organisation, utan har även studerat kommunikation inom projekt. Resultatet visar att det inte föreligger några större brister i kommunikation inom de studerade projekten. Den generella synen är att kommunikation fungerar bra. De synpunkter som har presenterats i rapporten ligger till grund för ett antal åtgärder som föreslås för att kunna uppnå ytterligare förbättrad kommunikation.

Abstract:
Revisiting a crime scene is a vital part of investigating a crime. When physically visiting a crime scene there is however always a risk of contaminating the scene, and when working on a cold case, chances are that the physical crime has been altered. This thesis aims to explore what tools a criminal investigator would need to investigate a crime in a virtual environment and if a virtual reconstruction of a crime scene can be used to aid investigators when solving crimes. To explore these questions, an application has been developed in Unreal Engine that uses virtual reality (VR) to investigate a scene, reconstructed from data that has been obtained through laser scanning. The result is an application where the user is located in the court of Stockholm city, which was scanned with a laser scanner by NFC in conjunction with the terror attack on Drottninggatan in April 2017. The user can choose between a set of tools, e.g. a measuring tool and to place certain objects in the scene, in order to draw conclusions of what has happened. User tests with criminal investigators show that this type of application might be of use in some way for the Swedish police. It is however not clear how or when this would be possible which can be expected since this is a new type of application that has not been used by the police before.

Abstract:
Globalisation is increasing, reason for people working more and more cross-culturally and with the use of computer-mediated tools. The field of research on both of these individual topics is existent and has thoroughly been discussed. Nevertheless, the integration of these topics in the field of research is still scarce and relatively unknown. The purpose of this study is therefore to understand the communication issues that arise between people from different cultures when interacting through textual computer-mediated communication tools, and how these issues are dealt with. These communication issues and their consequences will therefore be identified and investigated, in order to get a better understanding of what this entails. A qualitative study has been done to fulfil this purpose. Data has been collected through nine semi-structured interviews with people from different locations around the world. With this way of data collection, the focus lied on extracting the perspectives of the individuals on these topics. Thereafter the data has been analysed according to seven steps for a grounded analysis, in order to create a theory. The results of this study have shown that there are mainly three communication issues arising from the use of textual computer-mediated communication tools across cultures. These issues are named as linguistic barriers, cultural differences in communication, and the absence of nonverbal communication. It has shown that these issues have a significant impact on this type of communication, causing several consequences. The direct, negative consequences coming from these issues are the deterioration of professional relationships and a decrease in productivity. Next to these consequences, the study has shown that people also tend to develop certain counterstrategies against these issues. That is so to say, ways of minimising the negative impact that the issues have on the communication.
