Due to specific mission goals, many satellites are subject to cone constraints on the thrust direction. For example, James Webb Space Telescope, launched on December 25, 2021 toward a Halo orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 libration point, has a thermal shield that must prevent the telescope and other instruments from overheating [1]. Therefore, it is constrained to always keep its attitude such that the angle between the normal to the shield and the Sun direction is smaller than 53 deg. It results in conical constraints for the propulsion directions. Using chemical propulsion to perform small imp

Abstract Subsea centrifugal compressors commonly using labyrinth seals (LS) and pocket damper seals (PDS) must withstand the flow of oil in gas mixtures with a liquid volume fraction (LVF) up to 5%. This paper presents experimental results for the leakage and rotordynamic coefficients of a uniform clearance PDS and a similar size LS both supplied with wet gas. The shaft diameter D = 127 mm and the seal axial length L = 48 mm. In the tests, the seals’ pressure ratio (inlet/exit) = 2.5 and the shaft speed reaches 5.25 krpm (surface speed = 35 m/s). The LS has a 17% larger radial clearance (Cr,LS

Abstract New techniques in Information Technology are now changing not only our daily life, but also the professional practice of product design and manufacturing for new product development. Internet technology in particular opens up another domain for building future CAD/CAM environments. This environment will be a global, network-centric environment with various members providing different software tools, manufacturing facilities, and analysis services for distributed design and fabrication. In this paper, we first briefly describe a vision and current development in a distributed design an

The proposal was aimed to identify and functionally characterize key genes/enzymes in the citrus flavanone neohesperidoside biosynthetic pathway and to use them as tools for metabolic engineering to decrease bitterness levels in grapefruit. The proposed section on fruit seediness was dropped as suggested by the reviewers of the proposal. Citrus flavor and aroma is composed of complex combinations of soluble and volatile compounds. The former includes mainly sugars, acids and flavanones, a subgroup of flavonoids that includes bitter compounds responsible for the bitter flavor of grapefruit and

Original objectives: Understanding the regulation of abscission competence by exploring the nature and function of auxin-related gene expression changes in the leaf and pedicelAZs of tomato (as a model system), was the main goal of the previously submitted proposal. We proposed to achieve this goal by using microarray GeneChip analysis, to identify potential target genes for functional analysis by virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS). To increase the potential of accomplishing the objectives of the previously submitted proposal, we were asked by BARD to show feasibility for the use of these two

Two groups of Hansenula polymorpha mutants were screened by their fatty acid requirement, one requires saturated fatty acids for growth (sfa- mutamts) and the other requires unsaturated fatty acids (mfa- and pfa- mutants). Two of the sfa- mutants, S7 and S16, showed significantly difference in the fatty acid composition. S7 clearly defected in the production of C18:2∆9,12 and C18:3∆9,12,15, while S16 significantly accumulated medium-chain saturated fatty acids, C12:0 and C14:0. By tetrad analysis, the results showed that S7 had double mutation which composed of fatty acid synthesis mutation (H

[Extract from Executive Summary] The competition for space from competing sectors in the coastal waters of Scotland has never been greater and thus there is a growing a need for interactive seascape planning tools that encompass all marine activities. Similarly, the need to gather data to inform decision makers, especially in the fishing industry, has become essential to provide advice on the economic impact on fishing fleets both in terms of alternative conservation measures (e.g. effort limitations, temporal and spatial closures) as well as the overlap with other activities, thereby allowing
