Abstract:
The music we usually listen to in everyday life consists of either single melodies or harmonized melodies (i.e., of melodies “accompanied” by chords). However, differences in the neural mechanisms underlying melodic and harmonic processing have remained largely unknown. Using EEG, this study compared effects of music-syntactic processing between chords and melodies. In melody blocks, sequences consisted of five tones, the final tone being either regular or irregular (p = .5). Analogously, in chord blocks, sequences consisted of five chords, the final chord function being either regular or irre

The article examines some representative tunes by the notable Canadian jazz trumpeter and composer Kenny Wheeler. Though rooted in traditional jazz practices, Wheeler’s own compositions often deviate from tradition. For instance, his chord successions are sometimes highly chromatic and often non-diatonic. Further, he often excludes Mm7 chords, which diminishes the sense of traditional functionality. Yet his melodies tend to promote longer-reaching relationships that prioritize certain pitch-class collections over others. In contrast to the more traditional chord-scale approach commonly used to

Abstract:
The objective includes: Assess commercially available inspection methods to validate integrity of composite repair systems. Identify applicability to inspect composite overwrap and parent metal for both onshore and sub-sea pipelines (where information is available). Identify sources of data to include other users of composite materials(aerospace/aircraft, naval/ship repairs). Identify procedures and technologies to assess inspection effectiveness and provide a gap analysis. STUDY ON SELF-VIBRATION CHARACTERISTICS AND SEISMIC RESPONSE OF LARGE-OPENING DRUM-HONEYCOMB-TYPE QUAD-STRUT SUSPEND- DOME STRUCTURE. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2025. https://doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2025.21.2.6.

Full text
Abstract:
The large-opening drum-honeycomb-type quad-strut suspend-dome structure is a new type of suspend-dome structure, which was improved from the traditional cable dome structure. It replaces the top chord of the cable dome with seamless steel pipes. The structure combines the characteristics of the suspend-dome and the cable dome. The bottom chord nodes connects four struts, two inclined cables and one ring cable. The Ansys finite element model is established to analyze the influence of initial prestress, rise-span ratio, thickness-span ratio, opening span and bottom chord arrangement schemes on t

ANALYSIS OF THE DYNAMIC MECHANISM OF SQUARE TUBULAR T-JOINTS WITH CHORD FLANGES SUBJECTED TO IMPACT LOADING. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2024.20.1.3.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the dynamic mechanical properties of square tubular T-joints with impact loads acting on the chord surface in the joint area. The study first verified the failure modes and behaviors of the specimens under a brace axial force and impact, respectively, where the simulation results demonstrated good agreement with the experimental results. A total of 138 square hollow section tubular T-joint finite element models were divided into T1, T2, and T3 groups based on different tube diameter ratios. The failure modes, displacement-time history curves, and impact force-time history c

BEHAVIOR INSIGHTS AND PLASTIC DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS OF SSTF SYSTEMS BASED ON DETAILED FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSES OF A PROPOSED SUB-STRUCTURE. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2024.20.2.4.

Abstract:
The steel staggered truss framing (SSTF) system has been increasingly utilized due to its large column-free spaces, high construction efficiency, and favorable economic benefits. Despite its advantages, the SSTF system has yet to be incorporated in mainstream seismic design codes and is predominantly applied in low-seismic regions. The primary obstacle hindering the wider application of the SSTF system is the limited understanding of its inelastic behaviors, particularly in regard to diaphragm actions. This study firstly introduces an SSTF sub-structure that precisely reflects the diaphragm ac

APPLICATION OF HYDRAULIC SYNCHRONOUS LIFTING TECHNOLOGY IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF LONG-SPAN HYBRID STEEL STRUCTURES. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/icass2020.p.070.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to solve technical problems, such as uneven structures, multiple lifting points, high accuracy control requirements, and multi-disciplinary collaborative work, in the process of lifting and hoisting long-span hybrid steel structures based on the lifting work of a steel roof and steel beams of the Hunan Radio and Television studio F. First, after conducting research on the comparison and selection of the construction scheme, lifting process, quality control and other aspects, a floor assembly + hydraulic lifting + overhead supplementary bar construction plan was propos

EXPERIMENT STUDY ON THE INFLUENCES OF LENGTH ERRORS OF CABLES AND STRUTS ON SPATIAL CABLE-TRUSS STRUCTURE WITHOUT INNER RING CABLES. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2023.19.2.3.

Full text
Abstract:
Spatial cable-truss structure without inner ring cables (SCSWIRC) belongs to tensile structure, which is composed of three kinds of cable, strut and stiff ring-beam, and its stiffness generates from the pre-stresses of cables. The manufacturing errors of the three kinds of components determine the final formed state and ultimate bearing capacity, so it is essential to study the influences of manufacturing errors of three kinds of components on the mechanical property of structure. The influences of manufacturing errors on SCSWIRC have been studied from four aspects that include elongation or s

Abstract:
"Q Zhang's problem" is a teaching problem proposed by Qian Zhang, a science teacher at Dongjiao Minxiang Primary School in Dongcheng District, Beijing. In 2022, she proposed that: (1) when explaining the knowledge points of frequency in the "Sound" unit, experiments on the vibration of objects such as rubber bands and steel rulers were used to assist students in learning, but the effect was not obvious, because it was difficult for the naked eye to distinguish the speed of vibration of objects such as rubber bands, and it was difficult to correspond to the high and low frequencies; (2) Student
