This study examines the labour market outcomes of second-generation migrants in 32 countries (30 European countries, Australia and the United States of America). Drawing on data from labour force surveys and other household surveys contained in the ILO Microdata Repository, it focuses on labour force participation, unemployment, status in employment, wages and self-employment income. The results of the analysis reveal differences between second-generation migrants and other people born in the same country once the specific composition of that population group in terms of age and educational at

This chapter uses both household panel and cross-sectional data to examine the relationship between non-farm diversification and farm labour productivity; is asks whether the gender of the diversifier matters for the relationship. The full sample results provide no evidence that non-farm earning has any effect on farm labour productivity. Region-specific nuances exist, however. The chapter finds that increasing non-farm earnings reduces average farm productivity in poor regions but not in rich regions. The data also provide support for the hypothesis that the gender of the non-farm diversifier

Using decomposition methods, we analyse the role of the changing nature of work in explaining changes in employment, wage inequality, and job polarization in Chile from 1992 to 2017. Changes in occupational structure confirm a displacement of workers from low-skill occupations towards jobs demanding non-routine higher skills (professionals and technicians), and to jobs demanding routine manual and cognitive tasks (services and sales). Changes in occupational earnings have had an equalizing effect, with more substantial gains in favour of lower-skill occupations and also at the top of the skill

Top incomes in India have been rising sharply since the 1980s. In this chapter, we show that this phenomenon may have resulted in delays to female marriage. Our analysis takes advantage of cross-sectional variation in earnings distribution across narrowly defined marriage markets. We find that female marriage rates decline in response to increases in top male incomes. We also find marked effects on women’s educational attainment (in terms of years of schooling, as well as high school and college completion rates). We examine a number of hypotheses, and conclude that the pattern of results sugg

The role each of these sources play in household income and its growth over time across countries is explored, bringing out both the key features of incomes around the middle versus towards the top and bottom of the distribu

This idea is developed by exploring different ways in which self-service through ATMs has been marketed to consumers. ATM networks in the 1990s were still error prone and this gave rise to a growing number of withdrawal transactions (aka ‘phantom withdrawals’) for which neither client nor bank wanted to take responsibility. The aim of this paper is to identify the scope and patterns of the structural transformation as evidenced by changes in occupations and their task content, and their impact on employment, earnings and income distribution in Argentina during the new millennium. Results show that the changes in jobs did not follow the same pattern as those in earnings. In particular, earnings grew but employment shares fell in low-paying occupations. The macroeconomic conditions, production structure, and labour market institutions seem to shape the impact of technology on job demand and on earnings distribution

This article discusses three strands of the literature on optimal redistributional instruments. The first strand concerns what is sometimes referred to as the ‘tax substitution argument’, which supports the proposition that distributional goals should generally be pursued exclusively through taxes (and subsidies) on labour earnings. The argument rests the controversial assumption that, controlling for labour earnings, all individuals are identical. The second strand, a response to the first, attempts to counter the view that labour earnings exclusivity for redistributional policy is the natura
