Abstract:
The present work examines top-down shielding from distraction in visual attention; that is, under which circumstances can the intentions and goals of an observer counteract the bottom-up salience of irrelevant distractors. Several factors of influence will be considered: First, prior experience with distractors, i.e. did observers previously acquire an effective distractor shielding strategy; second, intra- vs. cross-dimensionality of distractors, i.e. are irrelevant distractors defined in the same feature dimension (e.g., shape, color) as the target or in a different feature dimension; third, time, i.e. how effective is distractor shielding early vs. later in processing; and finally, the incentive for effective distractor shielding.

Abstract:
In the last 15 years, an immense amount of research has gone into developing high efficiency Gallium Nitride based light emitting diodes (LED). These devices have become increasingly popular in LED displays and solid state lighting. Due to the large difference in refractive index between GaN and Air, a significant amount of light reflects at the boundary and does not escape the device. This drawback decreases external quantum efficiency (EQE) by minimizing light extraction. Scientists and engineers continue to develop creative solutions to enhance light extraction. Some solutions include surface roughening, patterned sapphire substrates, and reflective layers. This study proposes to increase external quantum efficiency and optimize light extraction efficiency of several LED structures using finite difference time domain analysis (FDTD). The structures under investigation include GaN based LEDs with nanoscale top gratings, patterned sapphire substrates in combination with SiO2 nanorod arrays, and reflective surfaces below and above the sapphire substrate. First, we optimize GaN based nanoscale top gratings and increase light extraction by 17.8%. Next, we simulate ITO based top gratings and enhance light extraction by 40%. Third, we optimize patterned sapphire substrate period and width and the vertical position of a SiO2 nanorod array. We achieve as high as 51.8% improvement in light extraction. Finally, we increase light extraction by 160% with the use of a silver reflection layer.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This PhD thesis provides an in-depth insight on various crucial aspects of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on (In,Ga)N/GaN heterostructures grown along the axis of nanowires (NWs) by molecular beam epitaxy on Si substrates. In particular, the growth parameters are adjusted so as to suppress the coalescence of NWs; in this way the photoluminescence (PL) intensity emitted from the NW-LEDs can be increased by about ten times. The opto-electronic properties of the NW-LEDs can be further improved by exclusively employing indium tin oxide instead of Ni/Au as top contact. Furthermore, the compatibility of selective-area growth (SAG) of GaN NWs on AlN-buffered Si substrates with device operation is demonstrated, thus paving the way for a new generation of LEDs based on homogeneous NW ensembles on Si. Ordered arrays of ultrathin NWs are also successfully obtained by combining SAG and in situ post-growth thermal decomposition. A double-line structure is observed in the electroluminescence (EL) spectra emitted by the NW-LEDs; it is likely caused by compressive strain introduced by the (Al,Ga)N electron blocking layer in the neighbouring (In,Ga)N quantum well. An in-depth analysis of temperature dependent PL and EL measurements indicates that carrier localization phenomena do not dominate the EL emission properties of the NW-LEDs. The forward bias current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of different NW-LEDs are analysed by means of an original model that takes into account the multi-element nature of LEDs based on NW ensembles by assuming a linear dependence of the ideality factor on applied bias. The transport mechanisms in reverse bias regime are carefully studied by means of deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) and temperature dependent I-V measurements. The physical origin of the detected deep states is discussed. Then, a physical model able to describe quantitatively the peculiar I-V-T characteristics of NW-LEDs is developed.

Abstract:
Abstract The perforation strategy of Dynamic Underbalance (DUB) created the surging effect to remove debris from the perforation tunnels, thus reducing skin for optimal injectivity in this offshore development water injector well in Malay Basin, Offshore Sarawak. The objective was to inject up to 18,000 bwpd for pressure maintenance purposes. In the design phase, perforation software was used to perform the simulation iterations by sensitizing on the number of empty tubing conveyed perforation (TCP) gun chambers added at the top and bottom of perforation intervals. However, due to small gun size (4-½ in.), limited rat hole length and high static underbalance (1,000 psig), the desired amount of DUB using conventional empty gun volume only was not possible to be achieved. As a result, an innovative approach using two Pressure Operated Tester Valves (POTV's) was proposed, to create additional empty space inside the tubular between the POTVs above the packer. However, this created additional challenges which had to be overcome. Presence of empty tubulars in between the POTVs prevented the required hydraulic pressure transmission through the tubulars to activate the perforation guns via normal hydraulic TCP firing head. Therefore, a specialized firing system was required, which consisted of an acoustic communication system triggering downhole electronics to actuate a standard TCP firing head (Top-Fire Dual) - a first for this type of firing head. The POTV was activated by applying a pre-set annular pressure. Opening lower POTV, after the perforation fired, will create the required DUB surge, around 1,000 psi, which help cleaning up the perforation tunnels. Downhole fast gauges (recording in microseconds range) were run as part of the assembly to measure and to confirm the created DUB effect. Both fast gauges as well as acoustic gauges confirmed that 300 psi DUB was created upon gun firing and around 1,000 psi surging was achieved after the two POTVs were opened. Maximum losses recorded at 525 gallons per minute were observed following perforation. The well's injectivity performance was evaluated by performing step rate test and the result confirmed the well was able to meet higher injection rate than the plan.

Abstract:
High Velocity Oxy-Fuel thermal spray systems (HVOF), also known as High Velocity Combustion systems (HVC) are high energy thermal spray combustion processes, producing very hard, high density coatings. These coatings are used in areas where high wear resistance is of particular importance, with metal carbide coatings being typical in gas turbine applications. Gas turbines use hard face coatings in such areas where vibration is the initial source of the problem. The areas tend to be in the hot end of the gas turbines although certain areas of the cold end are also affected. To date the hard face coating that has been predominately applied in gas turbines particularly in the hot end, is the Praxair (Union Carbide) “D” gun coating. As a result to date, the “D” gun system has had a virtual monopoly with regards to the overhaul/repair of gas turbine components where hard face coating was required. However new HVOF systems have come on to the market Examples are: CDS, Plasma Technik; Diamond Jet, Metco; Top Gun, UPT U.K. (Miller); Jet Kote, Deloro Stellite; Gun. Metallisation and JP 5000, Hobart Tafa. As a result gas turbine overhaul bases are now in a position to offer a more competitve coating service, producing comparable, and in some cases superior, coatings to those produced by the “D” gun process. This paper covers, from the Rolls Wood Group point of view, the developments of the HVOF systems, where they appear to be today and how these systems, now allow overhaul bases to offer services not previously available and the ability to develop new coating applications.

The Center for Electromechanics at the University of Texas in Austin, has developed a 9 Megajoule Electromagnetic gun system which will fire projectiles at hypervelocities of Mach 8. The compulsator (compensated pulsed alternator) is powered by a 5000 HP GE LM 500 aeroderivative gas turbine. This turbine and a 650 SHP Pratt and Whitney APU are mounted on a compact power skid. The APU drives lubrication pumps and the main variable displacement hydraulic pump for the starter and hydraulically operated heat exchanger cooling fans. The skid is a compact 12 ft by 12 ft by 2 ft deep aluminum and stainless steel structure. The fuel, lube and hydraulic tanks are rubber cells mounted inside compartments in the skid. The two turbines are mounted on top of the skid. The LM 500 turbine drives the pulsed alternator through a speed increaser gearbox. This paper details the innovative packaging designs and hardware and control system requirements. The design concepts used are different from the traditional approach because of severe constraints on weight, dimensions and abnormal performance requirements. Results of tests conducted are also provided.

Abstract:
Abstract High velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) experiments were carried out with Diamond Jet (DJ) 2600 and 2700, P-5000, Jet Kote and Top Gun to investigate the influence of the spray system and of the spray parameters on microstructure and properties of Cr3C2-NiCr coatings. The results show that with all applied HVOF systems Cr3C2-NiCr coatings of high density, high bond strength and high wear resistance can be produced. However, microstructure and properties of the coatings mainly depend on the degree of oxidation and carbon loss of the material during the spray process. Due to the relatively low heating of the spray material the decarburization of CrsCa-NiCr was found to be very low using the HVOF systems DJ 2600, DJ 2700 and JP-5000. Additionally favored by the increased particle velocities coatings sprayed with the Diamond Jet systems and the JP- 5000 exceed coatings produced with the traditional HVOF systems with regard to hardness, wear resistance and bond strength.

Abstract:
Abstract The paper reports a series of experiments with various HVOF spray systems (Jet Kote, Top Gun, Diamond Jet (DJ) Standard, DJ 2600 and 2700, JP-5000) using different types of WC-Co and WC-Co-Cr powders. The microstructure and phase composition of powders and coatings were analyzed by optical and scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Carbon and oxygen content of the coatings were determined in order to study the decarburization and oxidation of the material during the spray process. Coatings were also characterized by their hardness, bond strength, abrasive wear and corrosion resistance. The results demonstrate that the powders exhibit various degrees of phase transformation during the spray process depending on the type of powder, the spray system and the spray parameters. Within a relatively wide range, the extend of phase transformations has only little effect on coating properties. Therefore coatings of high hardness and wear resistance can be produced with all HVOF spray systems when the proper spray powder and process parameters are chosen.

Abstract:
Abstract High velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) spray experiments were carried out using various spray systems. A comparison is made of the systems introduced as a first and second generation (Jet Kote, Diamond Jet, Top Gun, CDS) with the more recently introduced systems of the third generation (JP 5000, DJ 2600, DJ 2700). The comparison is based on particle velocities and experiments to evaluate the heat transfer to the particles. The results show that the systems of the new generation with a converging-diverging nozzle section can produce up to 50% higher particle velocities. The higher kinetic energy allows to reduce the thermal energy and to reduce thermally activated phase transformations of the coating material during the spray process. Carbide coatings produced with one of the new HVOF systems exhibit a higher density, higher bond strength and higher hardness as compared to coatings produced with one of the systems of the first and second HVOF generation. Furthermore, the reduced thermal energy yields less oxidative loss of carbon and opens the possibility to spray coatings with neutral or compressive internal stresses, a prerequisite to produce carbide coatings up to a thickness of several millimeters.

Abstract:
Abstract PTA (Plasma Transferred Arc) reclamation of aluminum alloys by hard materials with a much higher melting temperature is very difficult. This is due to the high thermal diffusivity of these al1oys. Below a critical heat flux φc nothing happens and over φc the substrate melts very rapidly contrarily to what is observed with steel substrates. That explains probably why PTA is mainly used for steel reclamation. Thus the knowledge of heat flux transferred to the anode is a critical point to develop PTA reclamation on aluminum alloys and this is the aim of this paper. An experimental set-up was built to study the heat transferred to three substrates made of different materials : cast iron for reference, aluminum alloy and copper for its high thermal conductivity. The plasma torch was a Castolin Eutectic gun and allowed to inject a sheath gas around the plasma column. The copper, aluminum alloy and cast iron substrates, easily interchangeable, were the top of a water-cooled calorimeter allowing to determine the variation of the received heat flux with the working parameters : arc current, stand off distance, plasma forming gas momentum, sheath gas composition and momentum. The determination of the arc electric field allowed to calculate the arc diameter which was compared first with pictures taken with a video camera and second, with wear traces left on the anode material. Several correlations have been established to characterize the arc voltage and the anode heat flux.
