Abstract:
As a topic, organization design is poorly understood. While it is featured in most management textbooks as a chapter dedicated to organizational structures, it is unclear whether organization design is a one-off event or an ongoing process. Thus, it has traditionally been understood to be the same as an organizational configuration, with neat lines of communication and distribution of responsibilities, following pre-set typologies. However, what can be said to constitute organizational structure in this first half of the 21st century? The extraordinary growth of digital communications, the decreasing relevance of hierarchical bureaucracies, and the general demise of command-and-control have all but decimated the traditional notion of organizational structure. In this book it is argued that organization design needs a theoretical revamping. Using a mix of design and social sciences theories and concepts, the new approach is divided into three parts: design logics, design processes, and design leadership. A generic definition of organization design logics is offered, as a set of beliefs shared by managers and entrepreneurs in given sectors of the economy about the way organizations should be designed. Five logics and three types of designing processes are put forward. Logics: (1) the identity logic, (2) the normative logic, (3) the service logic, (4) the logic of effectual reasoning, (5) the logic of interactive structure. Processes: (1) intended design, (2) emergent design, (3) perceived design. For the leadership part, a model of leaderful organization design(ing) is proposed, with the following distinguishing features: (a) practice-based, (b) guided by values of democratic participation, (c) places meaning-making and meaning-taking at the centre of organizational life, (d) driven by design logics, which can be adopted and adapted to suit different internal and external environments.

Abstract:
The social organization of science as a topic of philosophy of science mostly concerns the question of which kinds of social organization are most beneficial to the epistemic aspirations of science. Section 1 addresses the interaction among scientists for improving epistemic qualities of knowledge claims in contrast to the mere accumulation of contributions from several scientists. Section 2 deals with the principles that are supposed to organize this interaction among scientists such that well-tested and well-confirmed knowledge is produced. Section 3 outlines what is supposed to glue scientific communities together and how society at large is assumed to affect the social organization of these communities. Section 4 attends to social epistemology (i.e., to attempts to explore the influence of social roles and characteristics on the system of scientific knowledge and confirmation practices).

Gasbarri, Lorenzo. The Concept of an International Organization in International Law. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192895790.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite their exponential growth in number and activities, international law lacks a comprehensive legal concept of an international organization. The book tackles this topic from the perspective of the legal nature of the legal systems developed by international organizations. It is the first comprehensive study of the different concepts under which international organizations’ legal systems are commonly understood: functionalism, constitutionalism, exceptionalism, informalism. It has a threefold purpose: to trace the historical origins of the different concepts of an international organization, to describe four families under which these different notions are subsumed, and to propose a theory which defines international organizations as ‘dual entities’. The concept of an international organization is defined looking at the nature of the legal systems they develop. The notion of ‘dual legal nature’ describes how organizations create particular legal systems that derive from international law. This peculiar condition affects the law they produce, which is international and internal at the same time. This conceptualization allows the development of a common legal framework applicable to all international organizations, despite their differences in terms of powers, membership, size, and other descriptive features. In particular, the most valuable consequence of this conceptualization is to rebut a frequent argumentative motif, under which organizations are either perceived as vehicles for member states’ interests or as autonomous entities. The effects of the dual legal nature are discussed, analysing international responsibility, the law of treaties, and the validity of organizations’ acts.

Mace, John, ed. The organization and structure of autobiographical memory. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198784845.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The topic of autobiographical memory has held a prominent role in memory research for the past 30 years, as it has proven indispensable to the understanding of human memory and cognition. An important focus of autobiographical memory research is uncovering the basic structure, nature, and organization of the autobiographical memory system. This edited volume addresses the organization and structure of autobiographical memory. Based on over 30 years of research, and the latest empirical findings, this volume presents the major theories and problems in the science of autobiographical memory organization. At its core are two influential global views on the organization, structure, and function of autobiographical memory (chapters 2 and 3). In addition, the volume examines the organization of autobiographical memory from a developmental perspective (chapter 4), a chapter examining the neuroscience of autobiographical memory organization (chapter 7), and a chapter examining organization from a functional perspective (chapter 6). Also covered is the role of culture in forming autobiographical memory (chapter 5), the role of the self in organizing autobiographical memory (chapter 8), insights from the reminiscence bump on organization (chapter 9), and a chapter on the organization of episodic autobiographical memories (chapter 10).

Abstract:
This chapter turns to the topic of organizational cultures and their relation to morality. Although a somewhat elusive topic, organizational cultures deserve to be taken seriously from a moral perspective, because they can make it more or less difficult for individuals in organizations not to violate basic moral norms. For example, by influencing ‘sensemaking’ in organizations, they can make the moral dimensions of decisions more or less visible to them. But organizational cultures often change, especially when individuals send signals that are reinforced in ‘spirals’ of repeated actions that can lead to ‘slippery slopes’. Often, the best strategy for maintaining a morally supportive culture is a firm commitment to moral principles. However, the importance of organizational culture for an organization’s moral life also points to the importance of opportunities of dialogue about this culture.

Abstract:
This book is the product of an institutional research project that seeks to carry out a theoretical and empirical contribution on culture and organizational change, variables important in organizational dynamics. This work addresses the perspective of organizational culture considering various topics that allow understanding their relations with other variables and in turn identifying how the organizational change is a construct that has an important impact on the organization. Therefore, the acceptance or rejection of changes in organizations will depend somehow on the organizational culture that is reflected in the organization. Finally, the connection between the variables under study is presented as a case study.

Abstract:
What happens when you take one of the most fundamental concepts in social science and apply it to one of the most ubiquitous forms of human collectives? This handbook strives to answer this question by exploring what has become a “root construct” in the field of management and organization studies: organizational identity (OI). The handbook provides a road-map to the OI field, both theoretically and methodologically, across seven sections: 1) Mapping the Organizational Identity Field; 2) Critical Perspectives on Organizational Identity; 3) Integrative Models of Organizational Identity; 4) How Individuals Relate to Organizational Identity; 5) Sources and Processes of Organizational Identity; 6) Identity and the Organization’s Environment; and 7) Implications of Organizational Identity. Each chapter not only offers a broad overview of its particular topic but also advances new knowledge and discusses the future of research in its area of focus. The handbook is introduced and concluded by the four editors who invite the reader to join the future development of OI.

Abstract:
Companies that can hire and retain military veterans will have a strong competitive advantage over their competitors that lack this capability. This book will help business leaders obtain that advantage. The chapters in this book draw from the research and findings from Industrial/Organizational (I/O) psychology and Human Resources (HR) research to describe how to find, communicate with, recruit, develop, lead, and retain military veterans and their family members as civilian employees. Unlike other books on this topic that lack evidence-based content, this book draws upon science, research, and best practices to provide guidance organizations can implement to drive their success. Topics in this book include sourcing, communications, and recruiting military veterans and their spouses; reviewing résumés to extract cross-corporate competencies; branding your organization to successfully appeal to this population; understanding and challenging your misconceptions of the military and doing the same with veterans’ misperceptions of civilian employment; addressing culture mismatches between civilian and military cultures and improving cultural communication and understanding; improving person-job-organization fit for veterans and military family members to retain them in their jobs; providing culturally sensitive mentoring and leadership; understanding the training veterans receive and their personality traits and culture—and how these can benefit your organization; hiring and retaining wounded warriors and veterans with disabilities; creating and utilizing veteran mentoring programs and affinity groups; providing effective supervision for veteran employees; supporting National Guardsmen and Reservists working as civilian employees, and retaining these employees to gain a further competitive advantage for your organization.

Abstract:
This book is the product of an institutional research project and looks towards making a contribution to those who work in the organizational field. Both organizational change and engagement are important variables in organizations because they are part of a mechanism and, as such, can affect the development and growth of the organization. This book, which addresses various aspects that contribute to give an extensive approach to the topics, allows us to observe how these variables are related to each other. In this way, it starts from the management of human talent in organizations and how positive psychology can be framed in the organizational field. Therefore, what is the role of organizational change, and finally the relationship between the variables under study is presented from the perspective of positive psychology.

Yeoman, Ruth, Catherine Bailey, Adrian Madden, and Marc Thompson, eds. The Oxford Handbook of Meaningful Work. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198788232.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Meaningful Work examines the concept, practices, and effects of meaningful work in organizations and beyond. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this volume reflects diverse scholarly contributions to understanding meaningful work from philosophy, political theory, psychology, sociology, organizational studies, and economics. In philosophy and political theory, treatments of meaningful work have been influenced by debates concerning the tensions between work as unavoidable and necessary, and work as a source of self-realization and human flourishing. This tension has come into renewed focus as work is reshaped by technology, globalization, and new forms of organization. In management studies, much empirical work has focused on meaningful work from the perspective of positive psychology, but more recent research has considered meaningful work as a complex phenomenon, socially constructed from interactive processes between individuals, and between individuals, organizations, and society. This Handbook examines meaningful work in the context of moral and pragmatic concerns such as dignity, alienation, freedom, organizational ethics, and corporate social responsibility. Representing some of the most up-to-date academic research, the collection illuminates the relationship of meaningful work to organizational constructs of identity, belonging, callings, self-transcendence, culture, and occupations. Researchers and practitioners will be inspired and equipped to identify new directions and methods with which to deepen scholarly inquiry into a topic of growing importance.

Abstract:
Organizational contradictions and process studies offer interwoven and complementary insights. Studies of dialectics, paradox, and dualities depict organizational contradictions that are oppositional as well as interrelated such that they persistently morph and shift over time. Studies of process often examine how contradictions fuel emergent, dynamic systems and stimulate novelty, adaptation, and transformation. Drawing largely from rich conversations at the Eighth International Symposium on Process Organization Studies, this volume unpacks these relationships in more depth. In this introduction, the authors provide an overview of the topic at hand, review the papers in this volume, outlining how the varied lenses of dialectics, paradoxes, and dualities help articulate the interplay between organizational process themes and contradictions, and offer suggestions for further research.
