Considering the reality of text production developed by High School students, the difficulties presented to them and to the professors and the demands of school and the admitance exam (vestibular), we verified the necessity of analyzing the processes of text construction in order to diagnose and diminish these difficulties. The general purpose of this study, developed within the framework of Textual-Interactive Grammar, a dimension of Text Linguistics, is to investigate the process of topic organization in school essays. More specifically, this study aims to (i) analyze the topic organization of school essays, demonstrating, in the intertopic level, the existence of hierarchy complexity and its degree, as well as the predominant kind of linearization and, in the intratopic level, the existence of a general rule of organization and (ii) compare the topic organization of essays considered to be the pattern (published by the media due to the achievement of highest grades on the High School National Exam (ENEM)) and essays produced by public High School students from São José do Rio Preto (SP, Brazil), in order to identify potential differences and similarities between these two groups of texts. To that end, the investigation follows the method of topic analysis (Jubran, 2006), which provides textual analysis based on the analytical category of discourse topic. Our results have shown more similarities than differences: the whole set of texts collected are structured by more than one discourse topic and the transition between each topic is given by continuity. Furthermore, there is a pattern for internal organization of topic segments, which covers most of them: the alternation between the units of Position and Support. In the light of these results and based on Travaglia (2011), we proposed an approach for teaching and learning of reading, comprehension and text production of the text genre of school essay through the topic organization category.

In this work, based on the theoretical framework of Textual-Interactive Grammar, we present a study of the Topic Organization process in newspaper editorials in the state of São Paulo of the 21st century. We broach the two levels of functioning of this process – the intertopic and intratopic levels. With regard to the first level, we analyze the intertopic complexity of editorials from three aspects: (i) quantity of specific discourse topics for each editorial; (ii) degree of hierarchical complexity; (iii) forms of topic sequencing. As for the second level, we investigate the existence of a general rule of internal structuring of minimal Topic Segments (SegTs) in current São Paulo editorials. In the analysis of these two levels of the Topic Organization process, we tried to demonstrate to what extent particularities of Topic Organization in the editorial genre would be related to aspects of the sociocommunicative purpose of the genre. The corpus includes editorials from Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo newspapers, published during August 2016, and the research follows the method of topic analysis, which enables textual analysis based on the abstract category of discourse topic and on the unit of analysis called the Topic Segment. The data show that newspaper editorials from São Paulo can present two, three or four more particularizing discourse topics, organized, in terms of hierarchical complexity, in one or two Topic Frames. Furthermore, our analyzes show that the editorial genre is characterized by presenting continuity as the predominant topical linearization form. Our research also shows that, in the editorial genre, the minimal SegT is organized internally according to the potentially recursive combination of two units of intratopic organization – position and support, that is, our work shows that, in the genre studied, the internal structuring of minimal SegTs involves the potentially recursive combination of groups of utterances the construct central references and groupings of statements that construct subsidiary references to the discourse topic of SegT. We argue that the functioning of the Topic Organization process in editorial of São Paulo newspapers of 21st century is closely related to sociocommunicative purpose of critical position defense of editorial genre. We also assume that the very fixed character of the editorial and restriction regarding the space occupied by the genre in the newspaper determine features Topic Organization in the current editorials of the state of São Paulo.
2016/09046-1

Abstract:
Mean Field Game (MFG) systems describe equilibrium configurations in differential games with infinitely many infinitesimal interacting agents. This thesis is articulated around three different contributions to the theory of Mean Field Games. The main purpose is to explore the power of this theory as a modeling tool in various fields, and to propose original approaches to deal with the underlying mathematical questions. The first chapter presents the key concepts and ideas that we use throughout the thesis: we introduce the MFG problem, and we briefly explain the asymptotic link with N-Player differential games when N → ∞. Next we present our main results and contributions, that are explained more in details in the subsequent chapters. In Chapter 2, we explore a Mean Field Game model with myopic agents. In contrast to the classical MFG models, we consider less rational agents which do not anticipate the evolution of the environment, but only observe the current state of the system, undergo changes and take actions accordingly. We analyze the resulting system of coupled PDEs and provide a rigorous derivation of that system from N-Player stochastic differential games models. Next, we show that our population of agents can self-organize and converge exponentially fast to the well-known ergodic MFG equilibrium. Chapters 3 and 4 deal with a MFG model in which producers compete to sell an exhaustible resource such as oil, coal, natural gas, or minerals. In Chapter 3, we propose an alternative approach based on a variational method to formulate the MFG problem, and we explore the deterministic limit (without fluctuations of demand) in a regime where re- sources are renewable or abundant. In Chapter 4 we address the rigorous link between the Cournot MFG model and the N-Player Cournot competition when N is large. In Chapter 5, we introduce a MFG model for the optimal execution of a multi-asset portfolio. We start by formulating the MFG problem, then we compute the optimal execution strategy for a given investor knowing her/his initial inventory and we carry out several simulations. Next, we analyze the influence of the trading activity on the observed intra-day pattern of the covariance matrix of returns and we apply our results in an empirical analysis on a pool of 176 US stocks

Abstract:

Toxic leadership costs organizations millions at a time in lost employees, lost customers, lost productivity, and even lost health. The literature shows toxic leadership extends beyond just leaders into an interconnected ?toxic triangle? of destructive leaders, conducive environments, and susceptible followers. This study explored, ?Can a free, online mindfulness-based stress reduction course reduce the negative impact of toxic leadership on the organization?? Ten volunteers self-identified as currently working under a toxic leader. The study used an explanatory sequential mixed methods design to measure resistance, compliance, and core self-evaluation along with interviews and journals. The results indicated mindfulness did reduce the negative impact: conducive environments were less conducive and susceptible followers were less susceptible. Additionally, mindfulness had influence on the entire toxic triangle and resulted in unique Toxic Triangle Influence Maps for each situation. Finally, family systems theory was found to be particularly useful for understanding leadership in a toxic triangle.

Abstract:
Since the inception of the United Nations in 1945, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have made public statements regarding the international peace and security organization. To the confusion of many Church members, who often look to their leaders for prophetic guidance on numerous spiritual and temporal topics, these statements have been conflicting. Some Church leaders have clearly opposed the United Nations and others have openly supported it, offering various ideological explanations for their beliefs. Yet, it is evident that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has never made an official position on the topic of the United Nations. Church members are free to exercise their agency and either oppose or support the organization as they deem necessary. Regardless of personal opinions, a relationship has emerged between the Church and the United Nations in the past few decades through joint humanitarian efforts, as well as official and unofficial interactions. Since the United Nations is most likely a permanent fixture of the political world, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is concerned with topics of international importance, it appears this relationship will continue to blossom throughout the future.

This thesis is part of a broader research project named “Projeto de História do Português Paulista” (Almeida, 2006), also known as “Projeto Caipira”, which has studied different aspects of the history of Portuguese spoken in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. One of these aspects is the evolution of a set of text construction processes, including the process of topic organization. In this way, the purpose of this thesis is to analyze the topic organization process in editor’s letters published in newspapers of the State of São Paulo during de 19th century. Both levels of such process are analyzed: intertopic organization, which is the combination of minimal Topic Segments (SegTs); intratopic organization, which is the internal organization of minimal SegTs. The theoretical framework consists in an articulation between Textual-Interactive Grammar (Jubran and Koch, 2006) and Speech Act Theory (Austin, 1962; Searle, 1969). The editor’s letters analyzed are selected from Barbosa and Lopes (2002). These authors, as part of Projeto Caipira, have provided a set of editor’s letters and reader’s letters published in different newspapers of São Paulo during the 19th century. The results show that the letters under consideration are characterized, at the intertopic level, by intertopic unicity, that is, each letter normally has a single topic. At the intratopic level, the letters follow a general rule, which predicts the construction of a unit called Topic Elaboration (through which the editor directs a message to readers/subscribers); according to the rule, this unit may be preceded by a unit called Topic Contextualization (which presents the topic of the letter) and/or it my be followed by a unit named Topic Expansion (where the editor discusses the message elaborated before). The data also show that, as a mechanism to distinguish intratopic units, the letters use different types of speech acts in different units. In addition, these units are differentiated to each other based on the presence/absence of performative verbs.

Abstract:
Industrial Organization concerns the strategic interaction between firms. How do firms take decisions when the reactions of others are taken into account? The goal is to better understand firms' decisions and their consequences in market competition. In chapter 2, I investigate the strategic interaction between research and development (R&D) cooperations and subsequent mergers. I present a theoretical model linking stable R&D cooperation networks with the decisions to merge, followed by the product market competition. I find that mergers and R&D cooperations are complements. This means that there are mergers that only exist because firms construct certain R&D cooperation networks. If cooperations were not allowed, then firms would choose not to merge. I also find that there are cooperations among firms that would not exist if the firms did not anticipate subsequent mergers. I also find that cooperations with non-merging parties are the key links, contradicting the intuition that firms create links to substitute for a merger at a later stage. The consequence is that the non-merging firm gains veto power over the merger and will only enable it if the resulting merged company is not too competitive. In chapter 3 I present a model that sheds light on how differently experienced Venture Capital firms compete and why they cooperate in the early stages of venture financing. I consider that the decision to cooperate is made by the financiers, but it must be approved by the owner of the project. I find that there are welfare gains from cooperating because syndications of Venture Capitalists evaluate projects more effectively and provide more value-added services. When the entrepreneur is taken into account, Venture Capitalists cannot appropriate all the gains from a venture. The entrepreneur retains part of the project by keeping the competition outside option. Therefore I present a model of cooperation without collusion. I also find that projects with greater potential are more likely to be syndicated and that larger investments do not necessarily lead to more cooperation. I test these two implications in an empirical analysis and find that projects with both a larger potential and a larger investment are more likely to be syndicated. Finally chapter 4 analyzes firms' decisions about the entry timing in markets. Specifically, I analyze how these decisions are affected by firms' beliefs about the state of the world. A second contribution of the paper is to study whether firms have incentives to distort beliefs and to become optimistic about the state of demand. The paper considers an endogenous timing model with incomplete information about demand. I show that with Bayesian firms there exists a unique perfect Bayesian equilibrium where firms with optimistic beliefs produce in the first period while firms with pessimistic beliefs only produce in the second period. I also find that when firms could choose to be overconfident they choose not to be. Nevertheless, they are weakly better by having the option to do so.

The research of my PhD dissertation focuses on the study of organizational problems, in the context of collaborative relations. In particular, the dissertation is composed by three chapters, in which I analyze incentives problems in interdisciplinary research and in collaboration agreements between firms and universities.
The first chapter of the thesis, "Incentives for Interdisciplinary Research", is (up to the moment and to my knowledge), the first article that formally characterizes interdisciplinary research: through the presence of complementarities in the production and through an innate cost disadvantage, when developing a new scientific area. My work shows that when the goals for the research are sufficiently demanding, interdisciplinarity is preferred to specialization.
In the second chapter of the thesis, "Business-Science Research Collaboration under Moral-Hazard", I analyze on how the characteristics of a research agreement can be the optimal outcome of a contract between the parties. Furthermore, the type of project can also be an importance incentive tool when some of the resources that are important for the success are non-verifiable and non-contractibe. The analysis is developed in two dimensions: the structure of partnership governance (decentralized and centralized), and the informational constraints that such structures may face. Even if a decentralized structure chooses a type of project that is closer to the interests of the governing party, both structures may optimally use the project as a mechanism to reduce the impact of moral-hazard.
In the third chapter of the thesis, "Patents and Business-Science Research Partnership" (jointly written with Walter Garcia-Fontes), I present an empirical study that relates the characteristics of the patents with the research process that lead to the inventions. Using data from the European Inventors Survey, PatVal-EU, the results of this chapter are aligned with the theoretical predictions of the previous chapter of the thesis: the institutional identity of the research organizations are associated with different basicness levels of the patens.

Abstract:
The Internet technology and the web economy create new types of markets and new relationships between market players. The majority of these new markets can be associated to platforms where two or more sides of the same market meet. Such “multi-sided” industries raise specific issues. Determining the optimal pricing strategy for both the platform and the users selling goods through the platform is one of the main challenges of this new economy. The first two chapters of my thesis analysis Price Parity Agreement (PPA) from a theoretical and an empirical point of view. I first study the effect of Price Parity Agreements from a theoretical perspective. I demonstrate that PPAs on the online booking market are detrimental to consumers if platforms have most of the bargaining power. They attenuate competition between platforms, lead to higher commission fees and higher hotel rooms’ prices. However, MFN clauses may also be welfare improving when hotels own the bargaining power and competition between them is high. The second chapter is dedicated to an empirical analysis of the effects of PPAs. Using a before-after design and controlling for external shocks, I demonstrate that the end of Price Parity Agreements imposed by public authorities to OTAs causes a decrease of about 3.1% to 4.5% in the average level of prices set by hotels. This decrease may be explained by an increase of price discrimination. I show that the level of price discrimination across OTAs increases by 2.3% to 1.4% after the drop of Price Parity Agreements and that the degree of inter-temporal price discrimination also increases by 3.6% to 2.1%. The last chapter of my thesis is focused on the analysis of the financial fines imposed by the French Autorité de la Concurrence to cartels in France between 2006 and 2018. We show that the level of these fines is sub-optimal and doesn’t meet the deterrence objective in the majority of the cases

Du, Toit P. Jacques. "Determining key intelligence topics for Old Mutual (S.A.)." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/85167.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2006.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Making sense of the competitive environment has become an essential condition for organisational survival and growth. The nature of the competitive environment has evolved to a state that all companies in an industry have more or less the same access to information. It is the companies that translate that information into actionable intelligence that will have the best chance of a competitive advantage. However, few organisations have the resources to study every aspect of the competitive environment. Prioritisation is required to ensure that only those aspects of the competitive environment that will really contribute to the performance of a company are studied. Translating information into intelligence requires both a process and a focus. This study was used to derive a conceptual competitive intelligence process model to guide the operations of Old Mutual’s Competitive Intelligence (CI) function. The conceptual model presented is based on a literature study and details the required steps in translating available information into actionable intelligence. The literature study firstly defines the concept of competitive intelligence. Secondly, it describes the conceptual model. Finally, the literature study describes in more detail the first phase of the intelligence process, i.e. the identification of intelligence needs of the organisation, and the translation of those needs into topics that can be prioritised and operationalised for collection and analysis by the CI function. This process is referred to as the Key Intelligence Topics (KITs) process. The identification of needs was done by means of an empirical study and entailed personal interviews with members of the senior management team of Old Mutual. The most significant need identified in the interviews is for forward-looking analysis of industry trends and competitor strategies. The products of these analyses should suggest potential actions to the recipients or users. The interviews and business documentation on strategic and tactical initiatives were used to determine the key intelligence needs of Old Mutual. The process and framework of interpreting the intelligence needs into prioritised KITs is described in Chapter 4. However, on Old Mutual’s request, specifics pertaining to strategic initiatives and intelligence requirements derived from the empirical study have not been documented in this study.

Brown, Courtney P. "The Employee Perspective| A Phenomenological Approach to the After Effects of Toxic Leadership." Thesis, Sullivan University, 2019. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=13810500.

Full text
Abstract:

Toxic leadership harms people and, eventually, the company as well through the poisoning of enthusiasm, creativity, autonomy, and innovative expression. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to investigate the decisions made by employees who were exposed to the actions of a toxic leader, and to explore the lived experiences of employees who were affected by toxic leadership within their organizations. The study explored the lived experiences of 13 participants who experienced and were affected by toxic leadership. This study used the modified Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen phenomenological method of data analysis to examine the participants’ transcripts. Analysis of the data gathered during the interviews developed five themes: 1) Flight: Leave the toxic environment; 2) Hope: Stay within the toxic environment; 3) Damage: Physical & psychological health issues; 4) Trust: Lack of trust at the workplace; and 5) Development: A positive outlook after experiencing toxic leadership. Findings from the study recommended that obtaining the employees’ perspectives whenever conducting research on the after effects of toxic leadership was significant. The results of this study suggested that the adverse effects of toxic leadership may continue past the immediate and adverse physiological and psychological responses. This study was intended to add value to the existing body of knowledge concerning toxic leadership for both the practitioner and scholar communities.

Abstract:
In my dissertation, I examine varied types of knowledge and how they contribute to innovation generation and selection at both the firm and the industry level using the emerging industry context of small satellites. My research is divided into three papers. In Paper One, I take a supply-demand perspective and examine how suppliers of technology—with their unique knowledge of science and technology—and users of technology—with their unique knowledge of demand—contribute to innovation generation and selection over the industry lifecycle. Results show that the contributions of suppliers and users vary based on unique aspects of innovation, such as novelty, breadth, and coherence – and also over the industry life cycle. In Paper Two, I study how firms overcome science-business tension in their pursuit of novel innovation. I examine unique aspects of knowledge: scientists' business knowledge and CEOs' scientific knowledge. I show that CEOs' scientific knowledge is an important driver of firms' novel pursuits and that this impact is higher when scientists do not have business knowledge. In the third paper, I further examine how scientists with high technological and scientific knowledge—i.e., star scientists—impact firm innovation generation and selection. With a focus on explorative and exploitative innovation, I develop theory on the boundary conditions of stars' impact on firm level outcomes. I propose that individual level contingencies—i.e., stage of employment—and organizational level contingencies—explorative or exploitative innovation—both facilitate and hinder stars' impact on firms' innovative pursuits.
Doctor of Philosophy

Abstract:
Leadership has been a much studied area within industrial and organizational psychology. Recently, scholars have begun to focus on the negative side of leadership; however, a lack of research has limited our understanding of toxic leadership. One step forward in this domain has been the development of the toxic triangle, which posits that toxic leaders are aided by toxic followers with a toxic environment. Although the leader has been studied within this triangle, relatively little has been researched regarding the follower or the environment. Specifically, that there has been a lack of research in the organizational environment that allows the rise of toxic leaders is concerning. In this study, a toxic work environment scale was developed to help capture pieces of organizational environments that contribute to the rise of toxic leadership. A refined scale was used along with a qualitative piece. Four other scales were used to establish convergent and divergent validity. From the results of this study, although refinement is needed, support for three of the dimensions was found: favoritism, perceived threat, and overall organizational climate. Additionally, through the qualitative portion, additional themes that emerged (e.g., bullying) could be utilized in future use of measures to help assess toxic work environment features. Finally, I recommend that researchers interested in the toxic triangle endeavor to conduct studies that examine all elements simultaneously.

Abstract:

Toxic leadership is associated with a number of negative consequences to the long-term health and welfare of people in organizations. Destructive leader styles redirect employee efforts from mission accomplishment to self-protection and survival behaviors, undermining the organization. Increased demand and decreased funding are characteristic of the nonprofit sector. Therefore, successful nonprofit organizations tend to rely on creativity and innovation to ensure their communities are appropriately and sufficiently sustained. Supportive, not toxic, leadership helps foster organizational environments that encourage prudent risk-taking and innovation.

This concurrent mixed methods study explored the relationship between toxic leadership and organizational citizenship and turnover behaviors among 471 survey respondents from a sample of San Diego nonprofit paid staff, and considered the influence commitment has on those relationships. An open ended question for those who reported experiencing toxic leadership provided additional context and depth as to why employees stayed in an organization in spite of abusive supervision. The findings of the study are of interest to leaders and managers of nonprofit organizations to develop policies and training processes as they strive to recruit, retain and develop talented employees.

Toxic supervision was found to exist in San Diego nonprofit organizations. However, its effect on organizational citizenship (OCB) and turnover behaviors was inconclusive, as was the influencing effect of commitment, in this study. However, both commitment and OCB-like ideas emerged as stated reasons that participants did not leave the organization, as did career, resilience and opportunity concepts. These identified variables suggest complex relationships that act in concert to influence staff retention indicating possible important opportunities for future research.

Singh, Kanika. "Under the Toxic Dome: An Analysis of China’s Accession to the World Trade Organization and its Impact on Ambient Air Pollution." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2017. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1651.

Abstract:
For the average Chinese citizen, waking up under a sky blanketed with smog is no longer a surprise: since the rise of industrial capitalism, changes in trade policy, consumer preferences and the overall magnitude of industry have resulted in crippling levels of ambient air pollution. Though growth in the manufacturing realm was prevalent in the post-Mao Industrial Revolution era, China’s accession to the World Trade Organization resulted in the proliferation of trade on a grand scale, and due to low manufacturing and production costs, resulted in China assuming its seat in the global market. Unfortunately, this economic success was accompanied by an unhealthy increase in ambient air pollution levels, and has since posed a significant threat to public welfare. This study surveys the impact of different aspects of trade volumes in the 31 provinces of China on the state of ambient air pollution. Findings include that as a result of increased trade due to China’s accession to the World Trade Organization, the volume of sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions from provincial industries is positively correlated with the exports of products manufactured in industrial operating units within China. This study also finds a positive relationship between the imports of products manufactured outside of China, as there is an increase in pollution from road dust due to traveling vehicles with these imported products. Though exports and imports of goods produced in foreign nations contribute significantly to the emissions patterns in Chinese provinces, an analysis of the data indicates that there is a stronger correlation between domestically produced units that are traded, as opposed to those units that are produced outside of the country.

Morris, Jr Jerry A. "Understanding Coping Strategies and Behaviors of Employees Affected by Toxic Leadership." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6359.

Full text
Abstract:
Toxic leaders affect nearly half of the U.S. employee base and create environments in which followers, peers, and staff might be less effective due to stress, devaluation, and potential job loss. A multiple case study approach was used to understand what coping strategies employees use to reduce the negative effects of toxic leadership on themselves, other employees, and the overall workplace; and to understand the behaviors that result from these strategies. The purposeful and snowball sample consisted of 29 participants within the United States, ages 30 to 65, who worked within two or more organizations and who either directly experienced a toxic leader or observed someone who did. The theoretical framework was based on betrayal trauma theory, conservation of resources theory, and the cognitive theory of trauma. Research questions focused on how affected employees coped during and after the toxic event and any coping differences between sample groups. Data were collected via one-on-one telephone interviews. Data were analyzed via data organization, acquaintance, classification, coding, and interpretation. The major themes that emerged were emotional reaction, coping strategies used, effects at work and home, and resulting health issues for both person and family. Seeking resource help was identified as the most effective coping strategy when dealing with a toxic leader. Toxic leadership can have lasting negative effects on both organizations and employees that can extend beyond the workplace. Organizations have an organizational and social responsibility to address toxic leader behaviors and provide resources to employees to counteract toxic leadership to create a more positive work environment where employees can find work rewarding and fulfilling.

Sun, Yixing. "Using the organizational and narrative thread structures in an e-book to support comprehension." Thesis, Robert Gordon University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10059/226.

Full text
Abstract:
Stories, themes, concepts and references are organized structurally and purposefully in most books. A person reading a book needs to understand themes and concepts within the context. Schank’s Dynamic Memory theory suggested that building on existing memory structures is essential to cognition and learning. Pirolli and Card emphasized the need to provide people with an independent and improved ability to access and understand information in their information seeking activities. Through a review of users’ reading behaviours and of existing e-Book user interfaces, we found that current e-Book browsers provide minimal support for comprehending the content of large and complex books. Readers of an e-Book need user interfaces that present and relate the organizational and narrative structures, and moreover, reveal the thematic structures. This thesis addresses the problem of providing readers with effective scaffolding of multiple structures of an e-Book in the user interface to support reading for comprehension. Recognising a story or topic as the basic unit in a book, we developed novel story segmentation techniques for discovering narrative segments, and adapted story linking techniques for linking narrative threads in semi-structured linear texts of an e-Book. We then designed an e-Book user interface to present the complex structures of the e-Book, as well as to assist the reader to discover these structures. We designed and developed evaluation methodologies to investigate reading and comprehension in e-Books, in order to assess the effectiveness of this user interface. We designed semi-directed reading tasks using a Story-Theme Map, and a set of corresponding measurements for the answers. We conducted user evaluations with book readers. Participants were asked to read stories, to browse and link related stories, and to identify major themes of stories in an e-Book. This thesis reports the experimental design and results in detail. The results confirmed that the e-Book interface helped readers perform reading tasks more effectively. The most important and interesting finding is that the interface proved to be more helpful to novice readers who had little background knowledge of the book. In addition, each component that supported the user interface was evaluated separately in a laboratory setting and, these results too are reported in the thesis.

So that we observed classes in two private school groups in Sao Jose do Rio Preto, both in the third year of High School, and enrolled the directions given to textual production – linguistics, interactive, encyclopedic and about the global textual models – as described by the sociocognitivist running of Textual Linguistics, to which we added another knowledge – about topical organization, regulated by the properties of “centration” and “organicity”. The collected texts were analysed in the category of discursive topic, with the intention of observing the topical (dis)organization in the school compositions. As for the rewritten texts, besides the orientation classes, the corrections made by the teachers into the original texts were taken into account, in order to verify if the new orientations contributed in obtaining texts with topical organization. As a result, it was noticed that, in spite of some differences in the way the classes were given in the two observed groups, most of the texts weren’t endowed with topical organization and this result could be explained by the nature of orientation that were given in the classes.

So that we observed classes in two private school groups in Sao Jose do Rio Preto, both in the third year of High School, and enrolled the directions given to textual production - linguistics, interactive, encyclopedic and about the global textual models - as described by the sociocognitivist running of Textual Linguistics, to which we added another knowledge - about topical organization, regulated by the properties of "centration" and "organicity". As a result, it was noticed that, in spite of some differences in the way the classes were given in the two observed groups, most of the texts weren't endowed with topical organization and this result could be explained by the nature of orientation that were given in the classes.
Mestre

Abstract:
Workplace toxicity may negatively influence the well-being and work performance of employees. Best practices of successful leadership approaches and behaviors have been unidentified when addressing low-toxicity work environments. The purpose of this qualitative narrative case study was to develop a deeper understanding of how leaders selected and applied specific leadership strategies and behaviors in nontoxic workplace environments. Data were collected from 10 participants in New Hampshire using a purposive sampling technique and semistructured interviews based on Alvarado's triangular model of workplace toxicity. This study was structured using a narrative approach to explore ways positive leaders practically implemented styles and behaviors to mitigate workplace toxicity. All participants met this study's qualification parameters; they had past experiences with toxic leaders that shaped their personal leadership styles. NVivo was used to compare and analyze data from all interview transcripts entered for recurring themes. These themes were coded according to how answers connected to a specific research question, and findings were collated across interviews to form results. Three major themes emerged from the data: experience with toxic leadership, leadership approaches to toxicity, and leadership behaviors toward toxicity. Insights from this study may help company leaders avoid lawsuits, low productivity levels, and high staff turnover due to toxic workplace elements left unattended or ineffectively managed. The study may contribute to positive social change by generating practical models of and suggestions for creating a less toxic work environment, thereby creating healthier and happier employees, which increases public wellbeing and company success.

Abstract:
98
In order for corporations to survive today’s ever changing business climate, enterprises must tailor overall business operational infrastructure; HR is something have to be focused on and fine-tuned. Centralization HR works best when dealing with small to medium size firms; when organizations gradually grow larger, the centralization HR must be shift to service and proficiency oriented. Companies can be benefited, only by mastering and orchestrating centralization and localization HR functions. Corporation tends to revolutionize its HR structure, headquarter HR has been transformed to Shared Services Center, SSC which carries some innovational and creative concepts. Localization HR has been transformed to Account Services Team, AST. However, company politic still influences HR infrastructure greatly. Pros for passive and localization HR structure. 1. Recruiting. Company can find right employee when it sees fit. 2. Cultivation. Company can tailor orientation and classes for novice workers. 3. Utilization. Company can make use of each employee promptly. 4. Sustain. A career path can be mapped out to curb turnover rate. Cons for passive and localization HR structure. 1. Hard to orchestrate headquarter and local HR functions 2. Local HR has very overall limited authority and ability to manage even daily routine and recruiting. 3. HR itself has the propensity to have high turnover rate . 4. Supervisors tend to practice nepotism to the teeth.

Huang, Xiaoli. "Developing a Cross-Disciplinary Typology of Topical Relevance Relationships as the Basis for a Topic-Oriented Information Architecture." 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/106495.

Full text
Abstract:
This submission reports on a cross-disciplinary inquiry into topicality and relevance, involving an in-depth literature analysis and an inductive development of a faceted typology (containing 227 fine-grained topical relevance relationships arrayed in three facets and 33 types of presentation relationships). This inquiry reveals a large variety of topical connections beyond topic matching (the common assumption of topical relevance in the field), renders a closer look into the structure of a topic, and induces a generic topic-oriented information architecture that is meaningful across topics and domain boundaries. The findings from the analysis contribute to the foundation work of information organization, metadata development, intellectual access / information retrieval, and knowledge discovery. The typology of topical relevance relationships is structured with three major facets: * Functional role of a piece of information plays in the overall structure of a topic or an argument; * Mode of reasoning: How information contributes to the userâ s reasoning about a topic; * Semantic relationship: How information connects to a topic semantically. This inquiry demonstrated that topical relevance with its close linkage to thinking and reasoning is central to many disciplines. The multidisciplinary approach allows synthesis and examination from new angles, leading to an integrated scheme of relevance relationships or a system of thinking that informs each individual discipline. The scheme resolving from the synthesis can be used to improve text and image understanding, knowledge organization and retrieval, reasoning, argumentation, and thinking in general, by people and machines.

Abstract:
This paper reports the findings of a study which was carried out to evaluate the educational preparation of cancer and palliative care nurses in England. The study was carried out in three stages and covered the following areas; documentary analysis of curriculae, assessment of practice, patients and professionals views of threshold and expert practice. The findings suggested that although there was widespread compliance with a national standard for cancer nursing, this was not the case for palliative care nursing. There was uncertainty about what should be assessed in practice and ambiguity about what was actually assessed. Partnership with children and their parents, clinical skills, multi-disciplinary working, and personal attributes were the main foci for expectations of threshold practice but an expert panel had difficulty in describing the attributes of higher level practice. The paper also describes how some of recommendations from the study are being taken forward in current policy and practice.

Abstract:
This work focuses on how micro and small companies can take advantage of trending topics for marketing campaigns. Trending topics are the most discussed topics at the moment on social media platforms, particularly on Twitter and Facebook. While the access to trending topics is free and available to everyone, marketing specialists and specific software are more expensive, therefore small companies do not have the budget to support those costs. The main goal is to search for associations between trending topics and companies on social media platforms and HotRivers prototype is designed to accomplish this. A solution that aims to be inexpensive, fast, and automated. Detailed analyses were conducted to reduced the time and maximize the resources available at the lowest price. The final user receives a list of the trending topics related to the target company. For HotRivers were tested different pre-processing text techniques, a method to select tweets called Centroid Strategy and three models, an embedding vectors approach with Doc2Vec model, a probabilistic model with Latent Dirichlet Allocation, and a classification task approach with a Convolutional Neural Network used on the final architecture. The Centroid Strategy is used on trending topics to avoid unwanted tweets. In the results stand out that trending topic Nike has an association with the company Nike and #World- PatientSafetyDay has an association with Portsmouth Hospitals University. HotRivers cannot produce a full marketing campaign but can point out to the direction to the next campaign.

Elmore, Joshua. "Impact of Gendered Topics in Letters of Recommendation on Perceived Importance for Making a Hiring Decision in Geosciences." Thesis, 2020. https://doi.org/10.7916/d8-5gc1-7q70.

Full text
Abstract:
Scientific fields are perceived of as more masculine than feminine and stereotypes of scientists are more closely associated with stereotypes of men than of women (Carli et al., 2016). Supporting this point, Elmore, Block, Bowers and Dutt (2019) uncovered 31 topics from letters of recommendation for post-doctoral applicants in the geosciences and found that these topics described male and female applicants differently and, in a manner consistent with gender stereotypes. As the number of women in the geosciences declines further up the academic ladder (National Science Foundation, 2017) and as letters of recommendation play an important role in academic hiring (Abbott et al. 2010), it is important to understand if the use of gendered topics in these letters may reduce the likelihood of female advancement. Thus, in the present study we gathered questionnaire data from 250 geoscience researchers and scientists asking them to rate and rank the topics uncovered by Elmore et al. (2019) in terms of their importance when making hiring decisions. Results showed geoscientists valued research productivity and publishing over being a teacher, student, or department citizen. Topics expressed more in letters for male applicants in Elmore et al. (2019) were rated as significantly more important when making a hiring decision than topics expressed more in letters for female applicants. Further, the male topics identified in Elmore et al. (2019) were ranked more often as the most important topics and less often as least important topics when making a hiring decision compared to the female topics. Finally, 68% of participants indicated they attribute 50% or more of their hiring decision to information found in letters of recommendation, underscoring the importance of letters of recommendation to career advancement in the geosciences.

Abstract:
97
In the past, most literatures regarding Internet public relations (PR) assumed that “the viewpoint of traditional PR can be applied to Internet PR”. However, this assumption lacks empirical evidence and validity. This article is a case study on the crisis of toxic milk powder in 2008, focusing on three research questions: (1) What is the relationship between corporate web site design and its target publics? (2) What is the relationship between corporate web site design and its crisis communication messages on web site? (3) What is the influential mechanism of corporate web site performance on the needs for crisis communication? Moreover, for exploring the mediation effect of organization-public relationships (OPR) on influence of web site performance on needs for crisis communication, the current research attempts to link the view of web site design and public perception, which led to the conduction of two studies in an attempt to explore possible answers. Based on the side of web site design, in view of the role of web site designs in the crisis of toxic milk powder, website content analysis was done in study 1. Findings suggest that stockholder-targeting website performed better than non-stockholder-targeting website in relationship establishment. But in the phase of crisis communication, no significant association was found between the public and crisis communication messages. Despite the fact that individual web site designs had an influence over crisis communication messages, they were not strong predictors overall. According to findings of study 1, researcher expect that the factors of public perception will mediate the relationships between web site design and crisis communication. In order to investigating the relationship between web site performance and the needs for crisis communication, an online experiment (N=402) was conducted in study 2. Study 2 added the factors of public perception (e. g., crisis responsibility and self-efficacy) and combined several web site designs to form a factor of web site performance. The research findings suggest that the effect of corporate web site performance on the needs for crisis communication was mediated by a set of mediator variables (i. e., OPR, crisis responsibility and self-efficacy) , with OPR being the most critical mediator in the multiple mediation model. Also, the proposed two-step multiple mediation model reflects the findings from previous studies, yielding the best overall model fit indexes. The results support the assumption that the viewpoint of traditional PR can be applied to Internet PR: Web site performance improves the relationship between organization and publics. Through the mediation of OPR, and the effect of website extends to field of crisis communication. The importance of relationship management in both traditional PR and Internet PR is made evident as a result of this research.

Abstract:
In this master project, the objective is to develop a strategic and operational marketing plan to support the launching of a football academy, designed to ensure the physical, psychological and emotional welfare of its athletes. This football academy will be launched in Portugal, by Nike, during the summer of 2021. In this project, we have identified the potential participants, sponsors and fans, and studied the advantages that this initiative may bring to Nike. To achieve these conclusions, we made a strategic and operational study, that will allow to evaluate the impact the new service for the brand and what resources will be needed to implement this project. We studied the reality in which the current football academies are being developed, to construct terms of comparisons between them, and to understand what the good practices are, and what can be improved in this industry. We defined a marketing strategy and designed marketing-mix components, with the goal of creating a football academy that fulfills the young athletes’ needs, and not only the agents’ and managers’ needs. Our goal was to construct a model of an academy that could be followed by other football clubs, demonstrating the importance that the mental wellbeing of the players has for themselves and for their futures, but also for the clubs where they play in.

Bollette, Maxime. "Two sides of the same industry: an analysis of the relationship between hotels and online travel agencies." Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/18329.

Abstract:
Nowadays most people know brands like Booking.com, Expedia and Airbnb. When someone wants to book an accommodation, they usually book through an intermediary, known as Online Travel Agency or OTA. However, it is not well-understood what is the true influence that OTAs have on hotels, the core strength of their business, nor is it known what the impacts are on consumers. This dissertation tries to define the scope of influence that they have over hotels’ booking channels and the impact on consumers. Since OTAs’ ramifications span the entire world, this paper only defines their influence in Belgium, so as to reduce the scope of this research. This academic paper starts with an analysis of the background of OTAs. Then gives an explanation of OTA business models, pros and cons and what can be expected in the future. The analysis of different types of OTA or related businesses offers an understanding as to how they impact consumers. Next, an overview of the hospitality industry in Belgium is provided with data from 2007 to 2017. Changes in legislation throughout the European Union which are relevant to the subject are explained and the impacts on hotels and OTAs are analysed. After that, a quantitative survey about Belgian consumers is presented, from the way they book accommodations to what services they expect. Lastly, qualitative interviews with hotel managers complete the study. They provide an understanding as to how OTAs influence hotels and how hotel managers cope with this relationship.

In order to respond to these questions, we have based our investigation in the conception of a survey we have distributed and analyzed, a predictive model and clustering analysis. The findings drawn in this study were meaningful and lead us to the confirmation of the biggest fears and discomfort reasons when attending restaurants in a pandemic context but also the causes that make individuals reconsider their attendance in restauration establishments.

"Service recovery strategies to negative online reviews on restaurant business: A case study on Zomato." Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/21263.

Full text
Abstract:
The occurrence of a service failure can take consumers to easily publish negative comments on social media platforms as review websites, which leads to the need for service providers to adopt service recovery strategies. In the online environment these strategies commonly take the form of management responses given by companies to negative reviews. Also, by analysing these comments, companies are able to identify failures and adopt actions and changes in the business to correct them. However, there is a scarcity of studies that explored how restaurants use service recovery strategies to deal with negative reviews. To fill this gap, an exploratory and qualitative analysis was conducted on 531 responses given by the management of 14 restaurants regarding negative comments on Zomato and interviews were carried out with some of these restaurant’ managers. The findings identify 12 management response strategies to deal with negative reviews: thanking, apology, invitation for a new visit, self-promotion, promise of change, explanation, standard reply, express feeling, request a new contact, suggest, deny problem and offer compensation. It was possible to conclude that most of the restaurants use these strategies in a similar way, as well as negative reviews led to business improvements classified in 11 recovery strategies: information update, information sharing, reviews database maintenance, environment adaptation, food quality improvement, packaging quality improvement, change in food and drinks confection, recipes innovation, change in booking procedure, staff training and staff supervision. In relation to these strategies, it was found that restaurants use them in a more diversified way.
