Motivated by these previous findings, the authors conduct numerical simulations of the spindown of eddies initialized in idealized topographic bowls. This contribution develops a broader understanding of well-being in premodern towns and by using digital methods to map social and economic inequalities, thereby drawing on insights from research on socio-spatial equity from urban studies. The key questions are how socio-economic inequality was reflected in the urban social topography and to what extent these spatial patterns reproduced inequality. Taking sixteenth-century Leiden as a case study, the spatial patterns of economic inequality and social segregation in this town are first examined. Next, the level of location-based inequality is explored by mapping and calculating urban spatial patterns of service accessibility.

AbstractThe paper presents a case study on the application of Geomatics to terrain’s deformation monitoring. Within the EU H2020 LiquefACT project, the Laboratory of Geomatics of the University of Pavia (Italy) was appointed to quantify the subsidence suffered by the terrain due to some trials conducted in the test site of Pieve di Cento, Northern Italy. Geomatics has long been used for deformation monitoring, but present paper deals with two peculiar elements: the constraints given by the test field, its layout, the allowed and forbidden actions, that forced the surveyors to elaborate an unconventional surveying design, and the use of a state-of-the-art instrument, the Trimble SX10. It mainly is a high-level topographic total station; being robotized, it has interesting laser scanning capabilities. In the paper, the survey design will be illustrated and discussed, and a selection of the obtained results will be presented. They highlight how much geomatics can be flexible and adaptable and, at the same time, precise and accurate.

Looking at photographs of Parisian construction (and destruction) sites by artists Marc Petitjean and Stéphane Couturier, Chapter One proposes that pictures of urban landscapes in various stages of mutation depict the city not merely as a bounded physical reality, but as a dialectical process. Both Petitjean’s series on the evolution of the neighborhood surrounding the Pompidou Center and Couturier’s views of the innards of nearby buildings in his “Urban Archaeology” series bear witness to the processes of an architectonic form of creative destruction in Paris’ city center. As they elicit the past, present, and future life of the buildings they picture, their images consider how the production and use of space factors into the larger historical processes of Paris’ becoming. When examined closely and in tandem, however, Petitjean’s and Couturier’s photographs also hint at the logic of speculation, in both the visual and commercial sense of that term, that subtends their production, dissemination, and display. In doing so, both projects study the construction site as part of a strategy to lay bare what the rhythms of modernization and capitalism often obscure and leave behind.

This chapter summarizes archaeological data and interpretations regarding 13 E Groups from the Cival region mapped and excavated by the Holmul Archaeological Project between 2000 and 2015. In the Middle (1000-350 BCE) and Late Preclassic (350 BCE-0 CE) periods Cival was the main political and ritual center in this region of northeastern Petén. Over the course of the Late Preclassic Period, four additional E Groups were built at Cival and nine more have been found so far at surrounding minor centers. These data from E Group complexes provide a coherent sample of architectural chronology, dimension, orientation and evidence of ritual behavior. Excavations in the Cival Main Plaza provide the most complete example of a Middle Preclassic E Group available to date. The ritual function of Cival’s earliest E Group focused on solar hierophanies that uniquely connected, calendrical, metereological and geomantic observations within a single locality. Subsequent Late Preclassic complexes in the region were built following the same principles according to each site’s peculiar topographic setting. In accordance with their initial function as place-making devices for emerging communities, E Groups in the Late Preclassic Period were associated with the emergence of regional political systems as centers of religious and political interactions.

From the third/ninth century onwards, the writing of local histories in Arabic flourished across the Islamic world. A great number of these works dealt with the history of individual cities and this chapter examines how they depicted those cities. Did they tend to portray cities as topographical landscapes or as social communities? If the former, what aspects of urban topography were they most interested in? If the latter, were the communities presented as cohesive or diverse? This chapter addresses these questions by comparing two works: Abū Zakariyya’ al-Azdī’s (d. 334/946) history of Mosul and Ḥamza al-Sahmī’s (d. 427/1035-36) history of Jurjan. It seeks to demonstrate that local historians thought very carefully about how to invest cities and their topographies with socially relevant meanings.

In 1996, the World Heritage Committee added the Historic Center of Oporto, Portugal, to the World Heritage List, recognizing its outstanding value, identified by its urban fabric and its many historic buildings. The area’s value is the result of a complex topography, articulated through streets, lanes, alleyways, stairs, and squares, while its architecture (residences and monuments) projects cultural values accumulated over successive eras. In the state of art section, this chapter presents some significant references and visual resources that contribute to the understand city´s urban development and to visualize the city in the past. This chapter presents two case studies of the authors’ attempts at visualization of that historic district. One describes a 3D scale model—Oporto’s Medieval Scale Model - and the other is a virtual reality project—Virtual Porto in the Sixteen Century—both shown as examples of thorough research, careful documentation of processes, and clear and approachable presentation. The authors also consider the potential of expanded development of such presentations, in light of uses in tourism and furthering greater knowledge, with the goals of facilitating the process of heritage conservation and the dissemination of information. As such, the two case studies are viewed in terms of principles of the London Charter regarding the creation of virtual heritage, as well as cite other examples of projects in European cities.

Visual attention can be seen as a computational resource that aids perception in any part of the visual field to which it is applied. This resource is limited, however, as it cannot be applied everywhere at the same time, but constitutes an attentional "focus". It has been known since the groundbreaking work of Helmholtz (1896) that attention has mobility and can be willfully deployed in the periphery of the visual field.
