Abstract:
AbstractThe new digital technologies have become an effective tool for researchers in different fields. Historians and archaeologists who are studying Greek and Roman Libya have benefited from technical developments in presenting different kinds of data, particularly relating to the epigraphy and toponymy of Libya. They have recently published several resources, and are working on more. This study presents the story of how scholars have collected a variety of Libyan heritage materials and published them online; the account makes it clear that these digital projects are the result of extensive and ongoing collaboration between researchers from different countries, including Libya. They have worked together, and are still working to produce valuable online corpora of inscriptions alongside the Heritage Gazetteer of Libya which records names used at different times, and in a variety of languages, of heritage sites. We also discuss plans for further improving the accessibility of these materials, and encouraging their wider use.

Full text
Abstract:
Enforced linguistic conversion: translation of the Macedonian toponyms in the 20th centuryThe article deals with the issue of forced conversion of Macedonian toponyms, considered as a form of linguistic and cultural dislocation or luxation (the Latin luxatio originating from luxus – dislocated). The toponyms are not just eminently linguistic but also a part of civilization’s memory of nations and of humankind, and that is why they are protected by international regulations. The act of translating toponyms from one language to another, within the frames of culturally and ethnically marked space, is undeniable violence against the cultural heritage. A change of a toponym, its forced translation into another language is, according to these legal acts, a crime against culture. For a toponym is a true reflection of historical facts and historical memories. Toponyms can be transcribed onto a different alphabet, letter‑by‑letter (transliteration), but should not be translated, especially not on the territory which is their civilization’s cradle, where they are practiced and inherited. Violent conversion of toponyms is an introduction to conversion of historical narratives and modern ethno‑cultural identities. History shows that there are violent forms of linguistic, cultural, religious and ethnic dislocations. The example of radical dislocation of Macedonian toponyms is probably one of the few in modern history. It has been taking place over an almost entire century – from the 1920s to the 21st century’s first decade. Macedonian toponyms, for centuries present on the territory of ethnic Macedonia (for which there is indisputable evidence), are being dislocated from their original linguistic/cultural context within several national entities: the Greek, Albanian and – paradoxically – Macedonian states. Such violent translation of toponyms is not devoid of geopolitical consequences. The conversions of Macedonian toponyms are just a step towards a systematic negation of the Macedonian linguistic and cultural identity, and with that, they deny the right of Macedonian people for their own national country, for every negation lies under the intention of re‑interpreting and retouching the historical reality. Wymuszona zamiana prowadzi faktycznie do przekształcenia narracji historycznych i tożsamości etniczno‑kulturowej. Wprowadzone zmiany toponimów świadczą o systematycznej negacji macedońskiej tożsamości językowej i kulturowej, a w konsekwencji o procesie negowania prawa narodu macedońskiego do własnego państwa narodowego, gdyż główną intencją każdej negacji jest reinterpretacja, przetwarzanie i zmiana rzeczywistości historycznej.

Abstract:
Abstract The borders of voivodships in Poland today are not consistent with those of historical regions. The current administrative division is largely based upon imposed boundaries, dividing initial regions. This research topic arises from the dichotomy between the toponymy applied to voivodships because of the administrative reform of 1999 – and the names of historical regions. Implementing such a toponomy, although detached from historical and cultural contexts, has contributed to establishing attachments with current administrative regions, which surpasses identification with historical units. This paper presents the results of empirical research employing a questionnaire survey of the inhabitants of 71 communes (LAU 2 units) in north-eastern Poland. The main objective was to examine the impact of recent administrative reform on territorial identity, with particular emphasis placed on the region of Podlasie. The surveyed communities are to the highest extent attached to national and local levels than to the region, which was only ranked third in the hierarchy of identification with a given area. The regional identity of the population living in north-east Poland is related primarily to the contemporary administrative borders. There are, however, explicit differences in perceptions of the region of Podlasie depending upon respondents’ place of residence, which is an indication that relict borders persist in the residents’ social consciousness.

Abstract:
AbstractDuring and after democratic transition in Poland, the decommunization of urban toponomy became an important aspect of symbolic changes. Although the general course of street renaming was similar in the whole country, the pace of these changes as well as scope of tolerance towards the symbols of the past varied. In this article, the cases of three major Polish cities are analyzed. In Kraków, its long and rich history constituted a background of local identity and certain level of autonomy in defining the symbolic landscape. Warsaw on the other hand was a city whose extraordinary experiences related to the World War II resulted in commemoration of a whole new set of myths and figures through the street names. What is more, its status of the country’s capital caused its identity to influence the canon of Polish history as a whole. This affected the third analyzed case, Wrocław, whose long history of links with German culture resulted in very little symbolic capital which would be compatible with this new patriotic canon. As a result, Wrocław accepted in its urban toponomy a vast number of symbols unrelated to its own memory, in the same time suppressing symbols linked to its local identity. Accepting external heritage turned out to be a strategy of avoiding conflict with the dominant narrative.1

Abstract:
Language and culture are two sides of a coin; they are inseparable because language is a reflection of the culture and identity of its speaker. Toponyms can be used to study various aspects of the local culture and can help to preserve the nation's cultural heritage. The language used in geographical naming shows the cultural richness of a nation. This study aims to describe the toponymy existing in Pandeglang District, focusing on the morpheme Ci- (Sundanese), kadu entry (Sundanese), and hill entry (Sundanese). This research uses analytical descriptive method. The data used in this paper comes from written as well as oral data sources. The findings revealed that the dominant toponyms in Pandeglang District are as follows: 1) using the morpheme ci- (BI: air); using the entry kadu (BI: durian); and using the entry hill (BI: bukit); 2) the naming factor is related to the geographical and sociocultural conditions of the local community.

The article considers the etymology of the toponym Shigali. the spread of chuvash names of settlements as the chuvashes move from the lower reaches of the Volga to the Wild Field. Borrowed elements in the Chuvash language from Arabic, Mari languages are fixed. The identification of a number of historical data on the basis of archival sources allows us to consider the historical and etymological branch of the prevalence of the Shigali oikonym in different lexical variations and phonetic variants. Materials on toponymy of the Chuvash region from the point of view of different scientists are also considered. The key goal of the study, which is described in this article, is simple - to "read" the history of native land in the language of toponymy is very interesting. Everyone reads it as far as possible – who as a simple man, who as a scientific. To understand it correctly, a complex historical analysis and classification of toponyms is needed. The language of our native land is rich and eloquent and a person who can read toponymy, it can tell infinitely many interesting things.

The paper deals with the historical-geographical analysis of Ptolemy's maps known as Table V and Table IX. The maps were found in the "Urbinas Manuscript" of Ptolemy's work "Geography", which originated in the first half of the 2nd century AD, so it is accepted that the maps are from that period also. On the Fifth Map the western part of the Balkan Peninsula was presented, and on the Ninth Map the area of the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula, in the pre-Roman and early Roman era. On maps and in the text, which serves as an explanation of the maps, there are plenty of data from topography and ethnography, and astronomical positions for more places. The data on the maps are not always consistent with the information in the text. Although there are also false geographical representations, these maps were ahead of their time in terms of cartographic methodology, geographical precision and toponomy. For over a millennium, this Ptolemy's work was lost and unknown in Europe, and when it was found in the 15th century, it significantly affected the Renaissance of geography and cartography, and the Renaissance of scientific thought in general. In this paper, the author deals with features and content analysis and identification of toponyms that have been presented on these maps, which have been aged more than two thousand years.

ABSTRACT Tide-influenced deposits of the Pennsylvanian Rock Lake Shale Member, Stanton Formation, Missouri and Kansas (U.S.A.), contain well-preserved evidence of the burrowing activities of protobranch bivalves, including locomotion (Protovirgularia) and locomotion-resting (Protovirgularia-Lockeia) trace fossils. Protovirgularia shows three distinct morphotypes, the morphological variability of which was controlled by external factors such as substrate conditions, toponomy, and undertrack deficiency. Extreme morphological modifications of Protovirgularia and/or Lockeia, represented by irregular bilobate structures, probably result from erosion and subsequent partial passive filling of the original biogenic structures. In addition, very well-preserved trace fossils showing intergradation of a fan-shaped cluster of ridges with Protovirgularia-Lockeia structures are interpreted as a compound biogenic structure that represents locomotion, resting, and feeding activities of burrowing protobranch bivalves.

The character of a proper name, be it an urbanonym or an anthroponym, may bear some stylistic burden, be an accessory of a style, in our case a newspaper one. The material for studying the newspaper is not only its typographical text, but also the marks made in the margins. Some interesting facts related to anthroponymy were extracted, in the course of our research, from various books of famous scientific and literary figures. Further, here are several cases related to toponyms (in the narrower sense, urban names) and their writing. Obviously, the noun-toponym formed by the suffix-prefix way, Подмосковье - has not yet finally entered the codified Russian language at the time of the publication of the newspaper issue for 1910. For the purpose of linguistic comparativization, the most interesting cases related to the anthroponymy and toponymy of today's press are given. Attention is also drawn to the case of accentology, and zoonyms are also discussed. There are cases when the mass media allow for distortion when quoting classics. The features of writing some toponyms are considered (the refusal to incline toponyms with -o). Partly, the article touches upon the theme of occasionalisms, dialectisms, univerbats (univerbs), colloquialisms, hydronyms, and simply names that are interesting for their exceptional rarity; norms of codified language, accentology. The subject of linguistic evolution that is taking place before our eyes is touched upon.

Vadja toponüüme koguti süstemaatiliselt XX sajandi teisel poolel. Sellest ajast pärinevad Eesti Keele Instituudi ja Emakeele Seltsi kohanimekogud. Siinkirjutajal õnnestus aastatel 2001–2004 panna kirja kõigest 40 kohanime. Vadja toponüümikat on seni uurinud peamiselt Paul Ariste. Käesoleval sajandil on väheste toponüümide algupära käsitlenud üksnes Leningradi oblasti Kingissepa rajooni asjaarmastajad. Käesolevas kirjutises, mis lähtub peamiselt mainitud kogudest ning käsitleb loodusja viljelusnimesid, on põhitähelepanu pööratud kohanimede päritolule. See võimaldab paigutada nad atribuutide ehk täiendosade järgi tähendusrühmadesse. Uurimuses tehakse kindlaks samuti kohanimede determinandid ehk liigisõnad. See näitab nende kunagist vahelduvat kasutusala. Kohanimede päritolu uurimisel on selgunud hulk üldnimesid, mida pole registreeritud väljaspool toponüümikat. Abstract. Enn Ernits: Votic names of natural and cultivation objects. A more systematical recording of Votic toponyms took place in the second half of the 20th century. Since then, the place name collections of the Institute of the Estonian Language and the Mother Tongue Society have been dated. The author managed to record only 40 toponyms between 2001 and 2004. Votic toponymy has so far been studied mainly by Paul Ariste (1964, 1965a, 1965b, 1967, 1968). In this century, only the amateurs of the Kingisepp district of the Leningrad region have dealt with the origin of some toponyms (see Demina 2009). This paper, which is mainly based on the previously mentioned collections and deals with the names of natural and cultivation objects, focuses on their origin. This allows us to classify place names by attributes into groups by their meaning. The study also identifies the generic terms of place names. The morphological features of toponyms are not neglected either. In Votic language, there are both primary and secondary place names, often toponyms without a generic term and sometimes term names. Names of natural and cultivation objects are quite similar in origin. They have evolved from the apellatives denoting nature, animals, plants, features, location and other aspects, sometimes deriving from the names of real persons or saints. The principles of toponym forming are similar to those in other Finnic languages (Ariste (1967: 83). The attribute of names occurs mainly in the nominative and genitive of singular, but the generic term is usually in the singular and rarely the plural. The same toponym can simultaneously refer to meadows, marshes, forests and fields. This indicates their former, alternative use. Examination of the origin of place names revealed a number of common names not recorded outside the toponymy.

Abstract:
In this paper, the Turkic elements in the toponymy of South Ossetia were analyzed. Most of these elements have never been previously studied. A brief survey of the history of the study of Turkisms in the toponymy of the region was performed. It was revealed that the proportion of South Ossetian Turkisms is very insignificant: they account for less than 1% of the total number of toponyms of South Ossetia. Here, it should be emphasized that the study of South Ossetian toponymy and, in particular, Turkisms is at the early stage and, therefore, other Turkisms may be discovered in the future. In the toponymy of North Ossetia, there are many more Turkisms, which is explained by the direct Ossetian-Turkic contacts in the North Caucasus without the participation of the ancestors of South Ossetians. A total of 20 toponyms, all borrowed from the Turkic languages, were analyzed. These are mainly names associated with livestock life, as well as names reflecting the realities of mountain landscapes and water objects. The identified Turkisms in the toponymy of South Ossetia, with rare exceptions, do not occur in the toponymy or dialects of North Ossetia, thereby indicating their independent appearance due to the partial infiltration of the Turkic ethnic element into the territory of South Ossetia.

The article deals with the toponymy of Irkutsk region as a significant component of regional linguocultural space. A brief history of the territory development is offered, as well as information on indigenous peoples due to the fact that the toponyms of Eastern Siberia date back to different language sources. The paper examines the ethno-linguistic layers of toponyms, analyses the results of cross-language contacts reflected in geographical names, and draws conclusions on cultural syncretism on the region’s territory. Authors analyze captured in Russian and foreign toponymy peculiarities of the world perception by local old residents, their attitude to a man, family, family line, flora and fauna. Value orientations of the locals are identified. On the material of official and unofficial toponyms the following phenomena of regional ethnic culture are described: ethnic unity, life, traditions, religion, rituals, and symbols.

Abstract:
A number old Bali inscriptions provide informations about past settlements scattered in many parts of Bali, and one of those is in northern part of the island. This research aims to reconstruct cultural history through epigraphic and toponymy studies as a foundation of historiography. Data collected through literature studies and surveys and analysed through textual criticism, both external and internal, and identification of toponyms. Data synthesis was conducted by placing toponym data found in inscriptions in the context of Old Balinese History. The result of this research shows that the characteristic of Old Bali settlements in North Bali could be differentiated into two categories, i.e. coastal area settlements and mountainous area settlements. Coastal area settlements have locational patterns that follow coastal line. These settlements have important roles in trade activites. Mountainous area settlements have mountain as their orientation, and the locational patterns are adjusted according to its mountainous topography and environment, thus its locations are scattered and tend to close to plantation or agricultural area.

Abstract:
The goal of this research is to determine the characteristics of methods in nominating geographical sites in the Chinese and Russian languages. Toponyms (geographical names) are a subsystem in the national language lexicon that describes the vast territory of each country, as well as the names of various specific geographical sites recognized in the geographical environment. Toponyms, being proper names, represent not only geographical nomenclature units, but are rich in historical and cultural connotations. The development of toponymy as an independent scientific field has an extensive background. In the course of time, the toponymic research was often reinforced by scientific data in different fields, such as comparative-historical linguistics, history, geography, and other. In continuation of previous research, this article analyzes the similarities and differences between the Russian and Chinese toponyms. The scientific novelty of the research consists in the following: 1) generalization of the data on the semantics of toponyms from linguistic perspective; 2) characterization of language specifics and significance of toponyms in the Chinese and Russian languages; 3) description of toponyms in connotative and linguocultural aspects. The relevance of the selected topic is substantiated by cultural importance of the Russian and Chinese toponyms, which are analyzed in accordance with principle of nominating motives. The comparison of toponyms in the indicated aspect is of particular importance for broadening the areas of research in toponymy and the theory of cross-cultural communication. As a result, the author reveals the similar and different types of the meanings of toponyms in the Russian and Chinese languages.

Abstract:
Like other areas of linguistic study, toponymy as a domain of analysis does not present itself as being overly reflective of its own assumptions. I ask whether a sub-category or sub-analysis dedicated to toponymy is required at all if we analyse toponyms, landscape terms, and geographical names within the scope of general linguistic analysis (lexical semantics, morphosyntax, and phonology). Or put succinctly: Is toponymy necessary? Data from a longitudinal study of Norfolk Island and Kangaroo Island toponymy indicate there are no marked aberrancies in either sets of data which cannot be accounted for by either more general Norf’k (the Norfolk Island language) or English rules. I conclude by suggesting future studies in landscape terminology should be more mindful of the requirements of the linguistic study of toponymy, especially within lexical, morphosyntactic, and phonological concerns, rather than just within the semantic domain.

Abstract:
The general features of the toponymy of the Ukrainian Carpathians in the context of the diversity of the region and its placement in the area of intercultural interaction are revealed. The origin and distribution of different types of Carpathian toponyms are analyzed. The perspectives of the use of toponymic analysis in local studies and in the organization of tourism activity are outlined. The conclusion is made that the organization of local lore in the field of geographic carpathology by toponymic method attracts the involvement of a wide range of researchers from outside the institutions and organizations, including teachers, students, and schoolchildren. Тoponymic analysis in regional studies should be carried out taking into account the trends of the course of historical and geographical processes and using the methods of typing toponyms, toponymic zoning and determining the boundaries of the distribution of toponyms of a certain type. The emphasis is placed on the fact that when organizing rural green tourism, field surveys of toponymic features of outskirts of settlements and local population surveys are important for determining the correct pronunciation of place names. Research of the Carpathian Toponymy is one of the methods of local ethnographers’ knowledge of the settlements of the Ukrainian Carpathians, the definition of differences between the traditional economy and the traditional culture of Carpathian ethnographic regions, which is relevant for the needs of ethnographic tourism. A detailed description, typing and explanation of the geographical location of the Carpathian place names are of practical importance not only in tourism but also in the context of restoring historical geographical names or making corrections to their spelling. Key words: geographical local studies, tourist resources, toponymy, origin and types of Carpathian toponyms, ethnographic and rural green tourism.

Abstract:
Georeferencing by place names (known as toponyms) is the most common way of associating textual information with geographic locations. While computers use numeric coordinates (such as longitude-latitude pairs) to represent places, people generally refer to places via their toponyms. Query by toponym is an effective way to find information about a geographic area. However, segmenting and parsing textual addresses to extract local toponyms is a difficult task in the geocoding field, especially in China. In this paper, a local spatial context-based framework is proposed to extract local toponyms and segment Chinese textual addresses. We collect urban points of interest (POIs) as an input data source; in this dataset, the textual address and geospatial position coordinates correspond at a one-to-one basis and can be easily used to explore the spatial distribution of local toponyms. The proposed framework involves two steps: address element identification and local toponym extraction. The first step identifies as many address element candidates as possible from a continuous string of textual addresses for each urban POI. The second step focuses on merging neighboring candidate pairs into local toponyms. A series of experiments are conducted to determine the thresholds for local toponym extraction based on precision-recall curves. Finally, we evaluate our framework by comparing its performance with three well-known Chinese word segmentation models. The comparative experimental results demonstrate that our framework achieves a better performance than do other models.

Ethnonyms and historical-geographical names that reflect the names of these ethnoses are also part of the language's interesting vocabulary groups. Without etnonyms or toponyms, it is impossible to get detailed information about the formation of any people. That is why ethnotoponyms in the onomastic system of language are considered to be the oldest lexical units. It is clear from the studies that the history of the origin of many ethnotoponyms belonging to the Turkic language is older than the history of written monuments belonging to this language. Each nation has given its name to the geographical objects since its formation, or named them with words belonging to its own language. As a result, each toponym, is a product of a certain period and keeps the traces of history. Avshar, Az, Alpout, Bayat, Bayandir, Cagatay, Chepni, Chinchavat, Chul, Khalaj, Khurs, Kulus, Kechili, Kangar, Mugan, Garakhanli, Kipchak, Padar, Pechenek, Turkesh, Sag, Sungur, Suvar, Oguz, Uz and hundreds of other such ethnotoponyms bear traces of ancient time in the modern stage of Azerbaijan toponymy.. Among these ethnotoponyms, the Cimmerians // Gamarli tribe is one of the tribes that bear the traces of history in Azerbaijani-Turkic onomastics as both ethnotoponyms (Gamardash-mountain in Lachin region; Gamarvan-village in the administrative-territorial unit of Gabala region; Gamarvan - river in Gabala region, Gamarli-region in Armenia) and anthroponyms (Gamar - person's name; Gamarli-surname). Abstract:
As an important data source for historical geography research, toponyms reflect the human activities and natural landscapes within a certain area and time period. In this paper, a novel quantitative method of reconstructing historical river networks using toponyms with the characteristics of water and direction is proposed. It is suitable for the study area which possesses rich water resources. To reconstruct the historical shape of the river network, (1) water-related toponyms and direction-related toponyms are extracted as two datasets based on the key words in each village toponym; (2) the feasibility of the river network reconstruction based on these toponyms is validated via a quantitative analysis, according to the spatial distributions of toponyms and rivers; (3) the reconstructed historical shape of the river network can be obtained via qualitative knowledge and geometrical analysis; and (4) the reconstructed rivers are visualized to display their general historical trends and shapes. The results of this paper demonstrate the global correlation and local differences between the toponyms and the river network. The historical river dynamics are revealed and can be proven by ancient maps and local chronicles. The proposed method provides a novel way to reconstruct historical river network shapes using toponym datasets.

Abstract:
The writer situates the Island of Orleans and briefly describes its physiography and history of settlement. The toponymy imposed during the early French regime (toponymie primitive)is described —with a few notable exceptions {Orléans, Argentenay, Beaulieu and Cap de Condé) these place names have almost entirely disappeared. Much of the present toponymy was established after 1666 and originates principally from Catholic parish names and from local usage. The major place names of the island were imposed by Church authorities but the minor toponyms were created by the local inhabitants. The island's toponymy is described as dynamic because many of the original place names have either been replaced or altered. The writer is of the opinion that toponymy should conform with reality ; consequently he deplores the fact that local usage is frequently ignored on contemporary maps of the Island of Orleans. An index of place names of the Island of Orleans is appended to the text.

Abstract:
The paper presents a study of toponyms attested by Academician Peter Simon Pallas during his expedition in the Middle Volga region (on the territory of the modern Samara and Ulyanovsk regions) in 1768–1769. The study data is retrieved from his Travels to Different Provinces of the Russian State, published originally in the German language. The book has never been considered as a source on historical toponymy of the Middle Volga Region which explains the authors’ interest to it. The first part of the paper provides various linguo-statistical data on local toponyms found by Pallas: their distribution by types of geographical objects; phonetic, morphological, structural, and other changes that these place names have undergone over 250 years. The second part contains a toponymic map created from Pallas’s records. The map uses GIS technologies and contains information on the geographical distribution of the mentioned Middle Volga toponyms belonging to different cultural strata: most ancient are Iranian, later ones — Finno-Ugric and Turkic, and the latest are Slavic. On the one hand, these materials help restore the linguo-geographic picture of different ethnic groups formerly attested in the Middle Volga region, and on the other hand, they provide a basis for further linguistic research into the regional toponymy.

Abstract:
This article examines the problems of classification of toponymy of the Uzbek people in the research conducted in the 60s of the XX century to the beginning of the XXI century and the role of ethnotoponyms as a separate classification unit. We know that toponyms also include place names formed based on the names of people, nation, tribe, ethnic group, tribe. The field of scientific and practical study of these names is called ethnotoponymy. Ethnotoponyms, on the other hand, are the name of an ethnos, that is, they are the result of the interaction of an ethnonym and a system of toponyms. In this regard, the study of ethnotoponyms as a separate form of classification unit is extremely relevant

Abstract:
The anthropocentric focus of contemporary linguistic research highlights the specificity of individual linguistic worldview which includes a personal sense of toponymy. The studies discussing the ways that toponymic concepts are apprehended, memorized, and retrieved from memory are usually based on experimental data. But looking at irregular changes that toponyms may receive in individual speech is no less informative. Children’s speech proves the most valuable source for this, since it is less bound to the language norms of everyday communication, which makes the modifications more distinct. The author uses a collection (more than 170 items) of St.-Petersburg toponym modifications from children of 3–11 years old, drawing some conclusions about the peculiarities of their auditory perception (the role of individual frequency, phonemic and supra-phonemic word features in building semantic awareness, the specificity of phoneme patterns recognition by children and the processes of etymologizing and rethinking the internal form of the word), memorizing and storing information (the study of the child’s vocabulary connections and semantization of words including proper and common nouns; making up words and grammatical forms in the course of their multiple reproduction). Analysis of this real-life data brings clarity over some structural and functional aspects of individual linguistic systems and their speech manifestations. The information obtained can be used for creating child’s speech, memory, and attention training programs, as well as for studies in local history.
