Abstract:
The goal of this research was to examine the linguistic properties of Western Ukraine’s toponymy as presented on Austrian, interwar-Polish, and Soviet topographic maps from the late 18th century to the 1980s. The research question was, “To what extent does this toponymy include languages other than Ukrainian?” As this article demonstrates, the changing toponymy corresponds with general language policies implemented in Western Ukraine by foreign states. The analysis in this work comprises 1,741 toponymic forms that refer to 207 geographical features on nine multi-sheet topographic maps. The toponyms examined are mainly oikonyms. The data collection was limited to the districts of eastern Galicia where Ukrainian speakers outnumbered Polish speakers by at least three to one. Given that linguistic context, it comes as no surprise that examples of non-vernacular “polonized” toponym forms were found to be especially prevalent in this examination. The general finding of this research is that the toponymies of Austrian and Polish maps comprise a mixture of Ukrainian and Polish/Polonized forms. The toponymic “polonization” was quite inconsistent and may reflect the diverse periods and forms of Polish policies.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article discusses the toponyms related to the Beskaragay, Borodulikha, and Shemonaikha districts of the East Kazakhstan region. By considering the notions of toponymic space, system, and worldview, the authors study toponymy from linguo-regional, linguo-cognitive, and ethnolinguistic aspects. The toponymy of the given districts is touched upon as a part of the whole toponymic system of Kazakhstan, with its own specifics defined by geographical location, settlement history, and the ethnographic state of the region. The authors highlight the origin and semantic structure of the toponymes under consideration. The nominations are systematized in accordance with their etymological, derivational, and semantic features. As the article refers to toponymic studies, it draws certain conclusions on the contribution of toponymy to the development of modern humanitarian science.

Abstract:
The article focuses on the taxonomic study оf toponyms, based on semantic and etymological information. A toponym is a word or phrase used to indicate, denote, or identify a geographic locality. The purpose of the study is to describe comprehensively the toponymic system of the German language on a broad typological background. The object of the study is a toponymy localized in the modern borders of Germany. The subject of scientific consideration are the semantic and linguistic-cultural features of German toponyms. German-language toponymy is described as an object-system in the general language system. Toponymy divides place-names into two broad categories: habitation names and feature names. A habitation name denotes a peopled locality, and usually dates from the locality’s inception. Feature names refer to natural or physical features of the landscape and are subdivided into hydronyms (water features), oronyms (relief features), and places of natural vegetation growth (meadows, glades, groves). The systematicity of toponymy stems from the recognition of language as a system with appropriate structures and internal relations. The toponymic system is a part of the general linguistic system, while it is an object-system of a higher rank in relation to systems of a lower rank (hydronymic, oikonymic, oronymic, etc.). The choice of potential toponyms used for the nomination of geographical objects is determined by the physical and geographical environment and social conditions, which leads to the manifestation of compression and minimization of linguistic means used in the toponymic system of a certain territory. All types of toponymic derivation are based on the associative nature of human thinking. Speakers establish associations by contiguity by reinterpreting the meaning, so toponymic derivatives are different in semantics from the original units.

Abstract:
The article considers the possibility of implementing an integrated approach to the representation of a toponym in reference systems and databases, taking its linguistic and cultural specifics into account. It is shown that their informative field contains both linguistic and encyclopedic information, it is revealed that various information is encoded in the basics of toponyms: historical, geographical, social, cultural, ethnographic, linguistic aspects. Based on the material of the toponyms of Smolensk region, which are included in the electronic information system "Toponymy of Russia", created at the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the implementation of an integrated approach in the presentation of a meaningful plan of toponyms is demonstrated. Cultural codes, which are contained in toponyms and reflect the national and cultural specifics of geographical names are characterized: anthropomorphic, faunal, spiritual, industrial (landscape), topomorphic (hydromorphic), emotional and characteristic, and cases of combining different codes in one toponym are described. Special attention is paid to cultural codes reflected in toponymic units with the names of geographical objects of the Russian-Belarusian border area. As a result of the conducted research, it is proposed to include information about cultural codes in the description of toponyms and present it as a separate parameter in the information system "Toponymy of Russia", which will allow users to expand their knowledge about the nominated object and its national and cultural specifics.

Abstract:
The paper presents morphemic-derivational structure of toponymic derivatives (toponymy-derived formations) of proper name “Cибирь”. In revealed derived words authors identify morphemes, specify the methods of their production, provide statistics on word-formation activity of morphemes in the process of secondary nomination of toponymy-derived appellatives. Based on regional material of dialectal dictionaries they define the peculiarities of toponym’s word-formation family of words, as well as its paradigmatic relations with derived categories. Horonym “Cибирь” is considered in the context of perception by regional linguistic persona in the national toponymic space. Examples of semantic toponymy-derived word-formation are given. Thereby, in Russian language world picture it is possible to identify a set of regionally marked background knowledge, perceptions of values as well as historical and cultural characteristics of the analyzed toponym.

The following methods were used in the research process: continuous sampling, field research, quantitative analysis, semantic analysis, functional analysis, contextual analysis. The result of this work is the compilation of classifications of toponyms included in the toponymic space of the novel "The Moscow Crank", based on the frequency of their use, the degree of reality / occasionality, semantics and the designated object. The field of application of the research results is fundamental and applied research in the field of philology. The novelty of the research lies in the fact that for the first time the structure of the toponymic space of A. Bely's novel "The Moscow Crank" is highlighted, and a comprehensive analysis of all toponyms used by the writer is carried out. The novelty of the research lies in the fact that for the first time the structure of the toponymic space of A. Bely's novel "The Moscow Crank" is highlighted, and a comprehensive analysis of all toponyms used by the writer is carried out. As a result of the work done, it was concluded that the core of the toponymic space of the novel is the toponym Moscow, which unites around itself numerous urbanonyms associated with this city and toponyms of various types, opposed to the core of the toponymy of the work. The results obtained can be used both in further research on the analysis of Moscow microtoponymy and macrotoponymy, and for the general analysis of the onomastic and, in particular, the toponymic system of the Russian language. The results of this study also reveal the peculiarities of the influence of extralinguistic factors, in particular, cultural and socio-political factors on the development and change of both the form and semantics of geographical names.

Abstract:
Toponyms are a valuable source of language learning in diachrony, they also carry the features of national culture, national identity. Their appearance, change and disappearance are associated with the development and change of certain phenomena of the historical process. However, the value of toponymic data is not limited to the value for science and cultural studies, they also have applied value: in solving national economic problems, in the development of tourism and the formation of a single integral tourist image of the region. Taking into account the relevance of toponymic data, the article discusses the principles of creation and structure of toponymic data in the Republic of Bahskortostan. When determining the structure of the base of toponymy itself, the authors of the article consider it necessary to determine the choice of the type of classification of toponymic material. In the article, based on the consideration of existing classifications of toponyms, a database is proposed that includes the following linguistic and non-linguistic information fields: toponym in Russian, toponym in Bashkir language, object class, object subclass (object type), etymology, variant of the object name (used in language of the local population), the etymology of the variant, the type of word formation, the nature of the nomination, documentation, administrative referencing, geographical coordinates, historical and cultural content, illustrative content. The authors of the article disclose the current state of the process of creating a database, determine the stages of the upcoming work.

Abstract:
The article examines the sources of the unstressed a/o variation in Russian toponyms spelling. This type of variation is known from the works of previous researchers of Russian toponymy and is also presented in Russia’s State Index of Place Names (SIPN), namely in the category of toponyms requiring spelling clarification. The material of the study is constituted by toponyms from the SIPN with variation in the spelling of unstressed a/o. The sources of the study are normative legal acts of the subjects of the country and municipalities, reference books of political divisions, lists of settlements and topographic maps of the 18th–21st centuries. Using different methods of onomastic research such as the analysis of name variants, etymological analysis, geolinguistic analysis, etc., the following sources for spelling variation of toponyms are identified and illustrated with examples: the influence of local dialects, de-etymologization of toponyms, hypercorrection of toponyms, the use of practical transcription rules, oral adoption of borrowed toponyms, phonetization of toponyms. The main prerequisite for variation is the unstressed position of the a/o vowels. The influence of local dialects may affect the spelling of a toponym, particularly in the case of de-etymologization, but it is not mandatory. De-etymologization manifests itself in the loss of connection with a specific appellative or anthroponym the toponym derives from. Toponymic variation is aggravated in the case of a known variation in the spelling of the corresponding appellative or anthroponym. Hypercorrection results from the urge to render a toponym in some form that feels intuitively correct. Hypercorrection and phonetization ignore both the traditions of the use of the toponym and its linguistic origin. The use of practical transcription leads to variation in the toponyms borrowed into Russian, particularly if these have traditional spellings. In the case of oral adoption of borrowed toponyms, variation occurs because of the adaptation of unfamiliar phonemes. It is noted that variation is often complex, and de-etymologization plays a crucial role.

Abstract:
The study examines a representative sample of toponyms located in the territory of Kazakhstan, that can potentially be of Mongolian origin. These toponyms are classified into three categories: 1) settlement names (oikonyms), 2) water body names (hydronyms), and 3) geographical feature names (oronyms). In cases of duplicate toponyms (oikonym and oronym), precedence is given to the geographical feature name, following the most common direction of toponymic transfer. The analysis investigates the significance of Mongolian names in the Kazakh language, encompassing motivational, word-formational, and etymological aspects, and proposes new hypotheses of their origin while considering earlier theories. The authors identify the main challenges faced by etymologists and toponymists and review previous authors’ unsuccessful etymological solutions. Errors detected in the data include references to Russified place names borrowed into contemporary Kazakh, inattention to early toponym records, neglect of phonetic changes in Kazakh and Mongolian, as well as their relative chronology, and disregard of potential phonetic adaptation patterns that one could expect based on the phonological peculiarities of both the source and receiving languages. The study aims to categorise place names according to the time and source of borrowing, each name being evaluated based on whether it was initially borrowed as a toponym or an appellative word that later integrated a Kazakh toponym. The analysis concludes that Kazakh toponymy of Mongolian origin (i.e. place names that were borrowed as toponyms) is predominantly recent and associated with the borders of two historical Mongolian states — the Dzungar and Kalmyk khanates.

Abstract:
gabrielaraujo@um.edu.mo ABSTRACT. This study describes the toponymic profile of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe (STP), a former Portuguese colony. Here, we consider (i) its linguistic contact situation, reflected in the toponyms of non-Portuguese etyma (mainly from national languages), and (ii) the structure of the toponymic syntagma in Portuguese. Toponyms are created according to a place's geographic, social, historical, and linguistic reality. Therefore, STP's toponyms are the locus of the Santomean linguistic ecology and memory. Due to its linguistic diversity, the study of Santomean toponymy is transdisciplinary. It contributes to understanding different languages that share São Tomé and Príncipe's ethnicity and linguistic heritage, including multilingual synchronic and/or diachronic conjunctures and the political importance of Portuguese. STP's toponymy expresses a multilingual conjuncture common to the country since the arrival of the Portuguese and (mainly) enslaved Africans from different regions of Africa. Although the Portuguese language and culture have influenced most local toponymy, the Santomean toponymic profile contains endemic linguistic and cultural specificities. Thus, natural phenomena, along with political and historical events, among others, play a role in forming toponyms and characterizing the local toponymy as unique.

The article attempts to present the possibilities of using the modeling method to study the toponymic space in Dagestan languages. A field model of the toponymic space of Avar, Dargin and Kaitag settlements is proposed, taking into account the methods of nomination and education considered through the prism of the case system of these languages. The reference to the category of space in our work is primarily due to the fact that Dagestan languages have a developed system of spatial cases, the forms of which are reflected in their rich toponymic nomenclature. The toponym, as you know, is the “name of the place”, the designation of a point on the surface of the earth. The article discusses approaches to the definition of space functions in the toponymic system of Dagestan languages. The purpose of the work is to identify and compare various functional explanations of the essence of space in the toponymic system of related languages. The article describes the toponymic systems of the Avar, Dargin languages and the Haidak dialect of the Dargin language as the most interesting linguistic units in terms of expressing locative meanings in Dagestan toponymy. The characteristics of toponyms considered from the standpoint of their cognitive and cultural understanding are shown. Dagestan toponymy is defined by names formed by means of spatial case formants, the model of which is the most characteristic, ancient and archaic.

Toponyms represent language units denoting elements of topographic environment. Toponymy is a bridge connecting geography and linguistics. The study of this kind of terms requires not only knowledge of the history of the emergence of geographical objects, but also the linguistic features of the language. The relevance of the study is caused by the need to develop the theory of toponymy and to systematize all the existing toponymic classifications. Classifying toponymic nominations, one must consider the multifaceted (intra- and extra-linguistic) principles of allocation of toponymic units. This article examines the classifications of foreign authors, proposed in various historical periods, personifying views on the problems of typologization of toponyms.

Today, determining the origin of names, distinguishing their semantics are one of the difficult and complex tasks facing toponomastics. Scientists, local historians and even amateurs who want to look into the life of the early era, yesterday, delve into toponymic facts, analyze their etymology and try to reveal the meaning of the local name. Each area of toponymy is studied at different levels. Currently, there is a need to develop a scientifically based methodology for the semantics of a toponym, including a substratum toponym. Considering that such a technique can be developed only with a comprehensive study of the semantics of toponyms in each territory, in each language, along with the general, specific features of toponyms, this article draws attention to the hydronyms reflecting the criticism of the object. Also, depending on the water quality, color, shape of the hydro-object, appearance and characteristics of plants, animals, etc., a group of general semantic models is determined. This commonality, along with the national, linguistic peculiarities of the peoples, makes the main nominational criticism of the satisfaction of their consumer abilities, taking into account the benefits of the hydro-object for a person.

Abstract:
Etymological analysis in toponymy involves the disclosure of the semantics of the name. The semantic aspect of the study is of great importance. Although almost all research scientists are focused on the semantics of the name, this aspect has not yet been fully analyzed. Currently, there is a need to develop a reliable, scientifically based reasoned methodology in the study of the semantics of a toponym, including a substratum toponym. Such technique can be developed only with a comprehensive study of the semantics of toponyms in each territory, in each language, along with the general, specific features of toponyms. The methodology for determining these features of semantics can be implemented through a linguistic typology that has not yet been used in toponomastics. It is clear that the work on identifying typological similarities and differences in the semantics of the toponymic system should be carried out on the basis of a large amount of material. An attempt to compare the Turkic (Kazakh) and Russian hydronyms of the northern region of Kazakhstan in this aspect and create their semantic typology is a natural phenomenon. This article will concern the hydronyms of the northern region of Kazakhstan from the point of view of semantic typology and consider the etymology of substarate hydronyms.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to identify the specifics of the transfer of fantasy toponyms in French-language translated literature. The article examines the toponymy of fiction of the fantasy genre, where, in addition to real-life geographical objects, there are author’s neologisms, the translation of which into a foreign language is fraught with significant difficulties. The scientific novelty of the work consists in the fact that, for the first time, the key characteristics of the interpretation and recreation of toponymic units in fantasy literature are described and systematized on the basis of the French-language translations of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series of novels. As a result of the study, it was found that the actual strategies for the transfer of toponymy are exclusion and domestication, while the choice of specific linguistic means is directly correlated with both linguistic and non-linguistic characteristics of the unit. From the point of view of language, the etymology of the toponym is decisive, whereas the pragmatics of the unit is an extralinguistically significant factor. Considerable attention is paid to the semantics of lexical units and their correlation with reality, which often determine the choice of specific linguistic means of transmitting a fantasy toponym in French.

The article investigates the evaluative component of the toponymic vocabulary in the English and Russian languages. The material of the research (evaluative toponyms and toponymic nicknames) was received from the geographic information systems GNIS and the dictionary of Russian toponyms by E.M. Pospelov. The purpose of the study is to identify the ratio of positive or negative evaluation components in the sphere of toponymy in different languages and to explain the cognitive reasons for the predominance of positive semantics among the toponymic vocabulary. The methodology used in the research combines continuous sampling method, method of quantitative and comparative analyses. The results of the investigation show that the axiological aspect of toponymy is universal and that there is a significant asymmetry towards positive evaluation when reflecting the sensory perception of the surrounding reality. This fact can be explained by the work of the language consciousness and the advertising function of toponyms aimed at creating a positive perception of a geographical space.

Abstract:
Purpose. The article is a review of scientific research on toponymy in the cognitive aspect. Toponyms as proper names contain communicative pragmatics, the ability to transmit national and cultural information about the objects of reality. For a long time, researchers have tied a toponym to a geographical object, ignoring the sensory side of cognition, from which the perception of the object of reality (geographical object) begins. The study of toponyms in the cognitive aspect goes back to objects and their perception, to the anthropological paradigm in linguistics. It is quite obvious that the problem of “person / language” is becoming increasingly relevant in linguistics, its solution making it possible to go beyond the language and pay attention to the person. We have made an attempt to systematize scientific research, establish links between existing theories and expand the range of toponymic research. Methodology. As a method of scientific research, we have chosen a review of the scientific literature on the chosen topic, which allows us to systematize research and propose a direction that has not been thoroughly studies so far, while being, in our opinion, of particular importance. Results. The main research paradigms are analyzed, the features of regional toponymic systems are highlighted, the need for expanding toponymic research in the direction of forming a toponymic picture of the world of a particular region is justified. Practical implications. The results of the study may be of interest for the theory of language, archeology, history, ethnography, geography, as well as for further toponymic studies.

Abstract:
Objective: Research shows that parallel toponyms exist in different types of toponymy, including oikonymy, oronymy, and hydronymy. Comparative analysis of parallel toponyms reveals that the people's ethnic origin, household, economic activity, and other areas are reflected here. Agriculture, cattle breeding, primarily sheep and horse breeding, crafts, and other fields had a special place in the life of the Turkic peoples. The mentioned economic fields are also of some importance in the toponymy of Azerbaijan. The large number of toponymic parallels of Azerbaijan and other Turkic-speaking countries once again proves the settlement of Turkic-speaking peoples in these areas since ancient times. Method: Every event or object can be studied from a certain point of view, which reflects the ultimate task of cognition. In the research process, certain concepts were clarified by using analysis and synthesis methods. Results: Examining the dictionary of geographical names of Turkic-speaking countries, information books, maps, and other materials shows that the toponyms of the countries of the Turkic world correspond to each other according to their linguistic affiliation, origin, and meaning. It is known that each of the Turkic peoples has its own ethnic name and language. Conclusions: Examining the residing areas of Turkic-speaking peoples elucidates that unlike peoples of Indo-European origin who settled in different continents, Turks live in the areas where they historically lived. These areas mainly cover a large extent, including some parts of the Asian continent, southeastern Europe, the northern part of the Caucasus, the South Caucasus, and South Azerbaijan. The units involved in the processes of the generation of names in the Azerbaijani system of toponyms are different, and this difference is clearly manifested. Toponyms are created gradually and in a consistent manner. When giving a geographic name to any object, all aspects of the language to which the name belongs are carefully contemplated. In this case, when conducting research on the origin of a toponym, it becomes easier and more reliable to find out to which language the object belongs. Research conducted for many years shows that most toponyms in the region, as well as paleotoponyms, are of ancient Turkish-Azerbaijani origin. These geographical names occupy a vital place in the toponymic stratification of Azerbaijan.

Abstract:
The subject of the study is the toponymy of the Ryazan district of the Ryazan region, which belongs to one of the concentration zones of the Old Russian toponymy of the region. The purpose of the study is a comprehensive survey of the toponymic landscape of the Ryazan villages of Dyadkovo – Vyshgorod with the identification of the most ancient layer of local names, their linguistic and chronological attribution. The sources of the material are Russian chronicles, scribal books, historical and modern topographic maps, as well as data from the author's toponymic expedition of 2021. In the analysis of the material, etymological, structural-semantic, formant, areal methods, the method of comparing linguistic, archaeological, geographical and historical data are used. The novelty of the research lies in the collection and systematization of the modern toponymy of the studied area, a comprehensive description of the Old Russian group of toponyms, identification of links with the territories of earlier Slavic settlement. It is established that the toponymy of this area does not reveal traces of a toponymic substrate, which indicates that the territory was fully developed in the past by the ancient Russian population. The etymology of the names is related to the traditional Slavic geographical terminology (city ‘fortified settlement’, Vyshegorod ‘fortified settlement on a hill’ or ‘city laid upstream from another city’, bystrets ‘small river with a fast current’, raka ‘river with a narrow channel and high steep banks'), Slavic terms kinship or Old Russian namesake (uncle "father's or mother's brother", personal name Uncle). The existing etymologies of names that go back to geographical terms are confirmed by the geographical realities of the area. The appellatives of Ryazan toponyms reveal areal connections with the territories of the basins of the Dnieper, Dniester, Desna, the Carpathian zone, and toponyms – with the Kiev toponymy. The study confirms the importance of conducting toponymic expeditions in the comprehensive study of the toponymic landscape of local territories, even taking into account temporary changes in relief, fauna and hydrographic network. The results of the study are of interest for historical lexicography, regional and interregional toponymy, toponymic cartography.

Abstract:
The work is devoted to the study of Mongolian place names in the toponymic system of one of the regions of the Russian Federation – the Republic of Bashkortostan. The study aims to discover in the Bashkir toponymy the geographical names of Mongolian origin to analyze their word formation structure, semantics, origin, and spatial distribution in the districts of the republic. The study is significant for the interpretation of foreign toponyms as it reveals the features of their functioning in the toponymic system of the Southern Urals. The scientific novelty of the study consists in the fact that it makes a short excursion into the study of the Mongolian layer in Bashkir toponymy and, for the first time, presents the etymology of many geographical names formed from oikonymic, oronymic, hydrographic terms, drimonims and ethnonyms of Mongolian origin and tries to systematize them. The study was conducted using descriptive, structural, and comparative-historical methods of toponym analysis, as well as ethnolinguistic reconstruction and lingua-cultural interpretation methods. The analyzed material shows that toponyms of Mongolian origin represent a small layer in Bashkir toponymy. Ethnotoponyms of Mongolian origin in Bashkir toponymy result from the intermingling of Mongolian and Bashkir tribes and clans due to the Mongol conquest. Toponyms of Mongolian origin, formed from geographical terms, characterize Bashkortostan's natural and anthropogenic landscape. Mongolian geographical names are also associated with the common beliefs of Mongolian and Turkic tribes.

Abstract:
Enforced linguistic conversion: translation of the Macedonian toponyms in the 20th centuryThe article deals with the issue of forced conversion of Macedonian toponyms, considered as a form of linguistic and cultural dislocation or luxation (the Latin luxatio originating from luxus – dislocated). The toponyms are not just eminently linguistic but also a part of civilization’s memory of nations and of humankind, and that is why they are protected by international regulations. The act of translating toponyms from one language to another, within the frames of culturally and ethnically marked space, is undeniable violence against the cultural heritage. A change of a toponym, its forced translation into another language is, according to these legal acts, a crime against culture. For a toponym is a true reflection of historical facts and historical memories. Toponyms can be transcribed onto a different alphabet, letter‑by‑letter (transliteration), but should not be translated, especially not on the territory which is their civilization’s cradle, where they are practiced and inherited. Violent conversion of toponyms is an introduction to conversion of historical narratives and modern ethno‑cultural identities. History shows that there are violent forms of linguistic, cultural, religious and ethnic dislocations. The example of radical dislocation of Macedonian toponyms is probably one of the few in modern history. It has been taking place over an almost entire century – from the 1920s to the 21st century’s first decade. Macedonian toponyms, for centuries present on the territory of ethnic Macedonia (for which there is indisputable evidence), are being dislocated from their original linguistic/cultural context within several national entities: the Greek, Albanian and – paradoxically – Macedonian states. Such violent translation of toponyms is not devoid of geopolitical consequences. The conversions of Macedonian toponyms are just a step towards a systematic negation of the Macedonian linguistic and cultural identity, and with that, they deny the right of Macedonian people for their own national country, for every negation lies under the intention of re‑interpreting and retouching the historical reality. Wymuszona zamiana prowadzi faktycznie do przekształcenia narracji historycznych i tożsamości etniczno‑kulturowej. Wprowadzone zmiany toponimów świadczą o systematycznej negacji macedońskiej tożsamości językowej i kulturowej, a w konsekwencji o procesie negowania prawa narodu macedońskiego do własnego państwa narodowego, gdyż główną intencją każdej negacji jest reinterpretacja, przetwarzanie i zmiana rzeczywistości historycznej.

The general features of the toponymy of the Ukrainian Carpathians in the context of the diversity of the region and its placement in the area of intercultural interaction are revealed. The origin and distribution of different types of Carpathian toponyms are analyzed. The perspectives of the use of toponymic analysis in local studies and in the organization of tourism activity are outlined. The conclusion is made that the organization of local lore in the field of geographic carpathology by toponymic method attracts the involvement of a wide range of researchers from outside the institutions and organizations, including teachers, students, and schoolchildren. Тoponymic analysis in regional studies should be carried out taking into account the trends of the course of historical and geographical processes and using the methods of typing toponyms, toponymic zoning and determining the boundaries of the distribution of toponyms of a certain type. The emphasis is placed on the fact that when organizing rural green tourism, field surveys of toponymic features of outskirts of settlements and local population surveys are important for determining the correct pronunciation of place names. Research of the Carpathian Toponymy is one of the methods of local ethnographers’ knowledge of the settlements of the Ukrainian Carpathians, the definition of differences between the traditional economy and the traditional culture of Carpathian ethnographic regions, which is relevant for the needs of ethnographic tourism. A detailed description, typing and explanation of the geographical location of the Carpathian place names are of practical importance not only in tourism but also in the context of restoring historical geographical names or making corrections to their spelling. Toponyms (place names) represent language units denoting elements of topographic environment. The relevance of the study is caused by the need to develop the theory of toponymy and to systematize all the existing toponymic classifications.Place names have a complicated (multidimensional) nature, which should be taken into account while classifying them. This research is an attempt to highlight various principles according to which it is possible to group the place names. The research is based on 15000 British and 17000 American toponyms, received from toponymic dictionaries, reference books and electronic toponymic search systems GNIS (Geographic Names Information System) and Get-a-map. Toponyms can be classified according to the following principles: 1) parametric characteristics of an object, 2) ontological characteristics of an object, 3) type of toponymic basis, 4) etymological characteristics of place names, 5) motivational characteristics of place names, 6) chronological characteristics of place names, 7) structural characteristics of toponyms, 8) toponymic polysemy, 9) degree of toponymic nomination, 10) variety of toponymic nomination, 11) localization of an object. It is obvious that it is impossible to create a unified classification of place names, which would reflect the entire multidimensional nature of the toponymic vocabulary. Classifying toponymic nominations, one must consider the multifaceted (intra- and extra-linguistic) principles of allocation of toponymic units.

The article presents evidence of a comprehensive linguistic analysis of the toponymy of Panama. The relevance of the topic is due to the fragmented research of Panamanian toponymy and the need for a comprehensive study of socio-historical and linguocultural factors in the formation of the Panamanian toponymicon. The hypothesis of the article is as follows: toponymy of Panama has a unique heterogeneous and polystrate character, semiotically determined by historical facts, ethnic composition of the population, natural conditions of the country and migration processes. Maps, GoogleMaps, GeoNames electronic systems were used as materials and tools. It was found that Hispanic geographic names make up the largest percentage in comparison with autochthonous toponyms and hybrid (blended) toponyms. The authors identified Spanish-Indian and Spanish-English blended place names. It is substantiated that Panama is a unique area of functioning of the general Spanish toponymic vocabulary. Historical and cultural events in the country were reflected in toponymy, capturing the topographic relief, including metaphorically perceived, names of first settlers, names of famous Panamanian personalities, perception of topographic objects at various stages of the country's development, influence of English language, which together form the toponymic dominants of the Panamanian society, heterogeneity and unique hybrid Indian-Spanish-English character of toponymicon, on the basis of which the term “toponymic multilinguism” is proposed.

Abstract:
This paper represents the results of the pioneering research work that studied the toponymic heritage of real historical personality like Ahmad Yasawi. It proposed that the name-giver of the city of Turkestan is Ahmad Yasawi by means of conducting intensive toponymic research and by considering Ahmad Yasawi’s ‘Diwan-i Hikmat’ and Suleyman Baqirgani’s ‘Aqirzaman’ as historical documents. Also the research paper analyzes the legends and stories related to the life of Ahmad Yasawi by Bolatbek Qorganbekov and Mashkhur Zhusup as the toponymic legends, which can be considered as etymological foundations of some place names. The author of the current research work made the classification of Ahmad Yasawi’s toponymic heritage, which can be regarded as the first classification of historical personality’s toponymic heritage suggested by scholars. Moreover, the research work discovers Ahmad Yasawi’s deed from a new angle. All place names, which are regarded as the toponymic heritage of Ahmad Yasawi, were divided into three main groups. They are as following: 1. The place names whose author was Ahmad Yasawi himself; 2. Ahmad Yasawi’s, his relatives’, and followers’ graveyards, which are considered here as sacral places of Kazakhstan, and also they are nekronyms that can be accepted as toponymic heritage of Yasawi; 3. The place names which appeared under the influence of Yasawi’s relatives and followers. The total number of toponyms that are classified as Yasawi’s toponymic heritage is 33. They are 13 econyms, 2 hydronyms, one oronym, and 17 nekronyms. Keywords: Toponym, Toponymic Heritage, Nekronym, Hydronym, Econym, Intensive Toponymy, Khwaja Ahmad Yasawi, Turkestan.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Vadja toponüüme koguti süstemaatiliselt XX sajandi teisel poolel. Sellest ajast pärinevad Eesti Keele Instituudi ja Emakeele Seltsi kohanimekogud. Siinkirjutajal õnnestus aastatel 2001–2004 panna kirja kõigest 40 kohanime. Vadja toponüümikat on seni uurinud peamiselt Paul Ariste. Käesoleval sajandil on väheste toponüümide algupära käsitlenud üksnes Leningradi oblasti Kingissepa rajooni asjaarmastajad. Käesolevas kirjutises, mis lähtub peamiselt mainitud kogudest ning käsitleb loodusja viljelusnimesid, on põhitähelepanu pööratud kohanimede päritolule. See võimaldab paigutada nad atribuutide ehk täiendosade järgi tähendusrühmadesse. Uurimuses tehakse kindlaks samuti kohanimede determinandid ehk liigisõnad. See näitab nende kunagist vahelduvat kasutusala. Kohanimede päritolu uurimisel on selgunud hulk üldnimesid, mida pole registreeritud väljaspool toponüümikat. Abstract. Enn Ernits: Votic names of natural and cultivation objects. A more systematical recording of Votic toponyms took place in the second half of the 20th century. Since then, the place name collections of the Institute of the Estonian Language and the Mother Tongue Society have been dated. The author managed to record only 40 toponyms between 2001 and 2004. Votic toponymy has so far been studied mainly by Paul Ariste (1964, 1965a, 1965b, 1967, 1968). In this century, only the amateurs of the Kingisepp district of the Leningrad region have dealt with the origin of some toponyms (see Demina 2009). This paper, which is mainly based on the previously mentioned collections and deals with the names of natural and cultivation objects, focuses on their origin. This allows us to classify place names by attributes into groups by their meaning. The study also identifies the generic terms of place names. The morphological features of toponyms are not neglected either. In Votic language, there are both primary and secondary place names, often toponyms without a generic term and sometimes term names. Names of natural and cultivation objects are quite similar in origin. They have evolved from the apellatives denoting nature, animals, plants, features, location and other aspects, sometimes deriving from the names of real persons or saints. The principles of toponym forming are similar to those in other Finnic languages (Ariste (1967: 83). The attribute of names occurs mainly in the nominative and genitive of singular, but the generic term is usually in the singular and rarely the plural. The same toponym can simultaneously refer to meadows, marshes, forests and fields. This indicates their former, alternative use. Examination of the origin of place names revealed a number of common names not recorded outside the toponymy.

Abstract:
ABSTACT This Community Service Activity is an activity based on community assistance to write and produce a local history product for its own environment. This is based on an analysis of the situation and needs of the people who do not have historical records and only rely on memories. The method used is service learning, which is divided into two activities that are synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous consists of delivering material and presentations, while asynchronous is in the form of guidance on writing Karawang toponyms. The participants who took part in this Community Service Activity were 62 history teachers who produced a history book on the toponym of Karawang. The results of this dedication show that history teachers have a strong interest in toponymy or local history. The process of finding sources, both literature study and field visits, provides an experience of researching history that strengthens soft skills in historical research. Abstract:
The aim of the research is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of numerative toponyms on the material of the USA toponymic system. The material of the research was toponyms containing numerals from 1 to 10 in the amount of 20709 units, obtained by the method of continuous sampling from the USa toponymic database. The numerals transition process into the category of toponymic lexicon is investigated. The structural models of toponyms with numerals, the most frequent forms of writing numerals, as well as the most productive numerals on the map of the USA are revealed. The main numerals functions in the toponyms composition are determined. The percentage ratio of the studied units depending on the type of the designated object is revealed, which shows the preferable occurrence of numerals in the natural objects names composition, mainly hydronyms. The states of the USA with the largest and the smallest numeralized toponyms were identified. The prevalence of numerative toponyms on the territory of the USA is analyzed and the results are presented on the map. The numerative toponyms share in the USA toponymic lexicon is determined. The research makes a significant contribution to the toponym creation process knowledge, the role that numerals play in this process, and the peculiarities of their semantics and functioning. The research can be a starting point and a tool for further research in the field of toponymic naming, helping better understand and explain the place name formation cognitive mechanisms.
