Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract:
Regular micro-surface structure in the form of micro-pores produced on the face of mechanical seals by laser technology can be used to improve the friction performance of the seal mating rings. A test rig with variable axial load was used to test laser-textured seal rings with micro-pores of various pore depth and pore ratio to study the effect of the laser-textured seal face structure parameters on the friction performance of mechanical seals. It is found that there are optimum texturing face parameters at which the friction torque and the face temperature rise of seal rings are minimum. Results of these tests show that the micro-pores on one of the seal mating faces can generate substantial hydrodynamic effect. Heat generation due to frictional contact on seal-ring surfaces is a major factor that causes deterioration of face seals and shortens their service life[1,2]. Excessive temperature rise can be avoided by improving structure of a seal surface. By means of laser technology return-flow structure, oblique line groove and spherical micro-pores are engraved on the seal face[3-5]. The research shows that substantial hydrodynamic effect can be generated between the seal faces with micro-pores[6-8]. In this study experiments are performed on laser-textured micro-pores seal faces at various axial loads to investigate the effect of the face structure and operating parameters on friction torque and face temperature rise.

Abstract:
The concentric torque-split face gear transmission is mainly developed for the rotorcraft which demands high power density and large speed reduction ratio. This paper aims at predicting the load sharing behaviours among paths. An original quasistatic load sharing analysis model, which is a hybrid finite element/lumped parameter quasistatic gear model, is presented. The connection between spur gear and face gear is also established. A number of numerical simulations of load sharing behaviour analysis are conducted. The mechanism of uneven load sharing is revealed. It is observed that the support stiffness of pinion and backlash have significant influences on the load sharing behaviours of the concentric torque-split face gear transmission.

Abstract:
For centuries, cosmetics have been used in the most diverse societies. However, when it comes to facial makeup, the process of choosing a product is still a challenge because it is a manual work that takes time, to consumes the makeup itself and other materials for application and cleaning. This manual process also makes it difficult to experiment a number of different products due to the need to clean the face to remove a previously applied product. Thus, a makeup simulation system using augmented reality can facilitate this process, allowing experimentation with the combination of products and the comparison of the results, as well as allowing to experience the products virtually and remotely, through the internet for example. Exis- ting works on this theme allow the user to apply the makeup on a photo or even a video of the user himself by means of a mouse or touch of a finger on a touch-sensitive monitor, as if the user applied makeup on a third person. In this dissertation we propose the development of SelfMakeup, an augmented reality system that allows the self-application of virtual makeup by means of touches made directly on the face, rather than touches on the monitor. Our hypothesis is that this interaction form is more natural and gives the user a better experience when testing virtual make-up products. The first step in enabling SelfMakeup was the develop- ment of a method to estimate the applicator touch position on the face using an RGBD camera. We performed tests to evaluate the performance of this method and verified that its accuracy and precision was adequate for the purpose of this research. Next, we designed the graphical interface of the system for applying vir- tual makeup. The interface allows highlighting and shading effects that simulate the effects of real makeup products. Results from a pilot experiment of our prototype with 32 volunteers suggest that SelfMakeup, by using touches directly on the face, provides a better user experience to try on virtual makeup products.

Abstract:
The increasing number of indoor soccer players, both in amateur and in professional teams, has given rise to more injuries to the musculoskeletal system, calling more attention and demanding greater care of healthcare providers. AIMS: To assess the parameters of isokinetic dynamometry in knee flexors and extensors muscles during pre-season period, detect the incidence of lower limb musculoskeletal injuries in indoor soccer players and establish a relation between injuries and muscular function. METHOD: Ninety-two indoor soccer players were assessed. Isokinetic assessment was conducted by using a Cybex isokinetic dynamometer, Norm model at angular velocities of 60o/sec. and 180o/sec. During the regular soccer season all injury events were recorded. Peak torque, total muscular work and flexor/extensor ratio corrected for body mass were analysed and expressed as a percent scale. Descriptive analysis of data (mean, standard deviation and percentage), as well as Wilcoxon and Kruskal-Wallis tests for comparison of quantitative and qualitative variables (P<.05) were performed. RESULTS: In the run-up to the season, significant differences were found for flexor peak torque, flexor/extensor ratio at 60o/s and total flexor work for the two speeds. The dominant side showed higher values. Ankle strain was the prevailing injury in both limbs, and the difference was not significant between both. No statistically significant differences were observed concerning injuries and isokinetic dynamometry variables. CONCLUSION: The results of the study suggest that indoor soccer players have changes in isokinetic variables, in both dominant and non-dominant limbs, depending on the angular velocity, although no relation between musculoskeletal injuries and such isokinetic variables was found

Abstract:
The main task of this work is to provide a contribution to help a more deep understanding on the operation of the asymmetrical twophase induction motor with return for applications in places where a possibility of a two-phase network feeding exists. important contributions where obtained with the help of a time domain dynamic model for symmetrical and asymmetrical two-phase machines developed as part of this work. With such contributions it was possible to show that a threephase induction motor can work as a two-phase asymmetrical induction motor with return through a phase or neutral conductor, without the need of some starting devices, such as, centrifugal switch and capacitors. this was proved through load and no-load tests and by way of comparisons between theoretical and experimental results. Hence, with such a work, we are seeking for the revitalization of the asymmetrical two-phase induction motor theory, a machine that presents a non-uniform magnetomotive force and electromagnetic torque.<br>O objetivo principal deste trabalho é fornecer uma contribuição que ajudará no entendimento com maior profundidade sobre o funcionamento do motor de indução bifásico assimétrico com retorno para aplicações em locais onde exista a possibilidade de uma rede de alimentação bifásica.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中山大學<br>機械與機電工程學系研究所<br>95<br>The mechanical grinding processes is the most popular way to fabricate the end face of optical fibers, although there are some other methods like chemical etching and leaser machining. In cases of fabricate the wedge type and wedge-cone type optical fiber end faces, the mechanical grinding is the typical way. Professor Y. C. Tsai’s research group has successfully fabricated the optical fiber with elliptical-cone-type end-face in a single grinding process by adopting a mechanism with eccentric mass on the commercial optical fiber grinding machine. In this study, a torque motor is equipped on the commercial optical fiber grinding machine for controlling the normal pressure between the optical fiber and the grinding film during the grinding process. While the optical fiber rotating, the normal pressure, as well as the material removed rate and the final shape of the optical fiber, can be controlled in different periodical mode shapes by applying different voltages with different periodical mode shapes. The merit of this system is its capability of fabricating fiber with elliptical-cone-shape and polygon-cone-shape (polyhedron-tip) end faces in a single grinding process that will increase the efficiency and the accuracy of grinding. It is believed the grinding machine system developed in this study can be successfully applied for fabricating the optical fiber lenses as well as different types of micro probes for other applications.

Abstract:
Interaction frames—the conventions that tell us to look at the stage, to focus in the passport booth—serve as technologies for intuition. Frames work this way because they are both imaginary and material at the same time as they fix or nudge, as Bateson remarked, our ideologies and practices for reading signs at all. Broken frames serve just as well or better. In fact, it is people’s capacity to break frames or layer competing ones that sets many questions for intuition in motion. Artists and then social theorists have called this process estrangement. But we cannot rest with mapping frames like intersecting circles, we need still to probe the tropes by which people differently recognize a frame—or anything—as broken or fragmented. The bits of ruin interpreted as signs of working-class evil in the United States, for instance, were badges of ingenuity and survival in post-WWII Russia. This chapter explores the local and geopolitical forces that torque perceptions and readings of conflict and rupture and that enchant dreams of wholeness. Contact does not become an issue for intuition to solve until some space of rupture or distance is made meaningful (or even imagined). Meanwhile, theatrical and psychic training in flexible framing separates phatic experts from the rest.

Appropriate flange tightening methods for flat face flanges with full face gaskets are discussed to improve the sealing performance of the bolted flange joints and the workability of flange tightening work. In general, relatively larger tightening torque is required for a flat face flange with a full face gasket compared to the flange with a ring gasket when we calculate the required tightening torque based on the latest Non-mandatory Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) evaluation method, “JIS B 2205-1991, Basis for calculation of pipe flanges”[1]. Especially, for the flat face flanges with large diameter and with fewer tightening bolts, this tendency becomes stronger. This problem sometimes causes a conflict when the flange torque calculation of the minimum required torque value to resist hydrostatic end force at the maximum design pressure of the flange is larger than the maximum allowable torque derived from flange or bolt strength. So, in this paper, surface stress of several diameter flange faces were measured to clarify whether or not the required stress is applied on the surface of the flat face flanges with full face gaskets. In addition, pressure tests were carried out to clarify the sealing performance under the condition of circumferentially non-uniform tightening load in each diameter flat face flange with full face gasket. Based on these test results, minimum flange-tightening bolt axial loads have been summarized to ensure the sealing performance of the flat face bolted flanges with full face gaskets.

Abstract:
Bolted connections where proper alignment is critical usually require the use of lap joint flanges. The ability of lap joint flanges to swivel around the pipe enables the connection to be installed with no rotational stress applied to the attached piping and equipment. The majority of lap joint flanges on the Enbridge Pipelines system are ANSI 600 and are located at pump nozzles. In these applications, Enbridge Pipelines’ standard specifies the use of spiral wound gaskets with inner rings. Problems with lap joint flanges typically occur at the time of assembly. There are a number of factors that contribute to the challenges of properly seating a gasket in these joints: • Since the raised face is separate from the flange, there is some flex in the face that could unevenly load the gasket; • The flange may not be concentric with the raised face that is welded to the pipe because of clearance between the pipe OD and the flange ID. Using the bolt holes to align the flange does not necessarily ensure that the raised faces are aligned; • Line up pins are not recommended on pump nozzles in order to ensure that no stress is placed on the pump. Consequently, the bottom studs are used to center the gasket and it is possible for the gasket to sit in the stud threads, increasing the misalignment between the gasket windings and the flange raised faces; • Specified torque values for a given flange size may be too high for use in a lap joint application. The perfect bolt alignment in these joints may result in a lower nut factor and subsequently a higher bolt stress for a given torque value. All of these factors can cause damage to the windings on a spiral wound gasket, eventually resulting in a leak. This paper will discuss ways to mitigate these issues.

Abstract:
Synchronous belts generally exhibit higher transmission efficiency than frictional transmission belts because of their meshing transmission. However, synchronous belts are subject to torque loss due to flexural rigidity when the belt is wound on a pulley. Torque loss also occurs due to incomplete meshing between the belt and pulley teeth at the beginning and end of meshing. If these torque losses can be reduced, synchronous belts can achieve higher transmission efficiency. In the present study, the torque loss in synchronous belt drives under the no transmitted torque and a pulley speed ratio of 1:1 is experimentally investigated with regard to installation tension, belt width, thickness of the belt back face, pitch difference, number of pulley teeth, and temperature of the atmosphere surrounding the belt. It is found that the torque loss in synchronous belt drives increases with increasing installation tension, belt back face thickness, belt width, and pitch length, and with decreasing pulley teeth number and temperature of the atmosphere surrounding the belt.

Abstract:
Abstract The use of face gears in helicopter transmissions was explored. A light-weight, split torque transmission design utilizing face gears was described. Face-gear design and geometry were investigated. Topics included tooth generation, limiting inner and outer radii, tooth contact analysis, contact ratio, gear eccentricity, and structural stiffness. Design charts were developed to determine minimum and maximum face-gear inner and outer radii. Analytical study of transmission error showed face-gear drives were relatively insensitive to gear misalignment, but tooth contact was affected by misalignment. A method of localizing bearing contact to compensate for misalignment was explored. The proper choice of shaft support stiffness enabled good load sharing in the split torque transmission design. Face-gear experimental studies were also included and the feasibility of face gears in high-speed, high-load applications such as helicopter transmissions was demonstrated.

Abstract:
Abstract Bolted flange connections are heavily used within the chemical production/processing, transportation, marine, and power generation industries to contain processes while minimizing leaks. These leaks could cause unsafe working conditions, environmental hazards, and/or loss of product which, in turn, can cause fines or higher operating cost for plants. A way to deter this from happening is to correctly load the fasteners of the bolted flange connections to ensure the fasteners are properly stretched to apply an adequate contact stress to the gasket. Good understanding of how bolted flanged connections are optimally loaded limits leakage. When applying load via controlled torque to a fastener, the torsional energy applied is translated into a perpendicular force acting on the nut’s face and threads that is mirrored on the other side of the fastener thus inducing the clamping force on the connection. To determine the clamping force generated from the applied torque, a typical torque equation is applied using an empirically derived composite friction term called the nut factor. The nut factor is a dimensionless constant that includes all of the friction effects in the torque-clamping force relationship. The friction occurs between the surfaces of bolt and nut threads and the faces of the nut and flange or washer. The higher the friction, the higher the nut factor resulting in a higher fastener torque to achieve the same clamping force load. This study looked at several variables that can cause changes in assembly nut factor magnitude including bolt grade, bolt load, lubrication, washer presence, and bolt diameter.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to develop a high-performance face gear set for aircraft. The geometrical design method of the face gear has already been proposed, and how to decide an effective engagement area under the design parameter has been clarified. A numerical example is presented based on the proposed method. Before machining test, the modified-tooth was decided by the developed Tooth Contact Analysis (TCA) program in order to control the tooth contact pattern. The influence of alignment error of each axis of gear was investigated using TCA. The designed modified-tooth was processed by the Multi-Tasking machine. Finally, running test was performed at a pinion rotating speed of 970 rpm. The face gear set can be operated continuously at an maximum load torque 1390 N · m, without any trouble. The transmission efficiency reached 98.9% under maximum load torque. This cutting method of the face gear introduces a new degree of freedom for defining optional shapes of tooth modification.

Abstract:
The behavior and life of a tilted flat thrust washer bearing is modeled by a comprehensive numerical code. The goal is to investigate the conditions that distress thrust washer bearings through numerical techniques. This work includes thermo-mechanical deformations (which have been neglected in previous studies). The thrust washer bearing supports non-axisymmetric loads within the planetary gear sets of automatic transmissions and consists of flat-faced washers placed between an idle helical gear and its contacting face. Various coupled numerical schemes model sliding friction, boundary lubrication, asperity contact, thermo-mechanical deformation, thermo-viscous effects, and full film lubrication. The model provides predictions of frictional torque, bearing temperature, hydrodynamic lift and other indicators of bearing performance. The experimental and numerical results show that the bearing is very susceptible to the mechanism of thermoelastic instability (TEI). Theoretical predictions indeed predict that the washer may operate in the range of TEI.
