Abstract:
Tongkonan is a style of vernacular architecture famous in Toraja, a mountainous region in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The Tongkonan traditional house is a symbol of the Toraja people, representing the ancestors and the entire cosmos of life – from birth to death. The houses and their arrangement within a settlement form a social and cultural space that gathers the extended family of the Tongkonan. This article explores the landscape of Tongkonan architecture and coffee cultivation, showing how Tongkonan is essential to Toraja's cultural landscape and a foundation of Toraja coffee culture. The study draws together literature reviews, interviews, photographic and video observation, as well as photo-elicitation interviews. The research reveals that although the existence of Tongkonan architecture precedes the introduction of coffee cultivation, the Tongkonan's geographical closeness to the coffee farms, the historic economic importance of coffee, and the social and cultural relevance of Tongkonan creates a cultural landscape entangling Tongkonan settlements and forests, coffee farms and coffee culture activities. Tongkonan and coffee form Toraja's unique cultural landscape. The space of the Tongkonan, which includes coffee community activities, serves as a basis of Toraja coffee culture.

Abstract:
Indonesia has a cultural heritage of traditional architecture that is environmentally friendly and sensitive to sustainability issues. Toraja architecture, namely tongkonan (traditional house) and alang (traditional barn) are still widely standing. Toraja architecture is not value-free and vulnerable to social, economic, and cultural conditions, so this study aims to reveal how the Toraja people respond to adapt, transform to these influences for the sustainability of Toraja architecture in the future. This study is a type of revealing knowledge with qualitative case study method. Using the Miles and Huberman model analysis technique in the form of descriptive and pattern matching, the results of the study obtained that Toraja architecture has resilience in adapting and transforming to face current social, economic and cultural changes in the form of adaptability to current building material technology, carpentry skills, curved roof shape as Toraja identity, customary rules and adaptive-responsive abilities, social status symbols, low costs, customary preservation, are elements of resilience for the sustainability of alang architecture. The resilience of Toraja architecture is a model for sustainable development of Indonesian traditional architecture.

Abstract:
Title: Study of Toba and Toraja Batak Architectural Forms as a Result of Collective Austronesian Memory The archipelago (Indonesia) that we live in today is the distribution of the Austronesian people who lived in riverine areas in South China and North Vietnam in the mid-4th BC. Cultural development in an area results from a mixture of internal and external things. The mixing of culture and art by early settlers and new settlers resulted in diverse architectural forms, even though they share the same principles of traditional values (Austronesian collective memory). Toba and Toraja Batak architecture is hollow architecture with a similar roof shape that resembles the shape of a boat, a typology of houses and barns facing each other, and a housing complex oriented to form a particular axis. This research used an exploratory-qualitative approach, using literature sources combined with direct observations in the field. This research aims to find the level of closeness between Toba and Toraja Batak architecture based on the collective memory of the Austronesian people.

Abstract:
The socio-technical architecture of constructing a community's traditional house is a zine-qua-non at the locus of developing tourism destinations in several areas worldwide. A socio-technical system is an old approach that is realigned with developing integrated tourism components, especially various tourist attractions based on local cultural treasures. The results of this qualitative research with a phenomenological approach analyze and explain the noumena (meaning) behind the phenomena (facts) regarding socio-technical architecture based on Tongkonan traditional houses in Tana Toraja, Indonesia. The study results found that architectural works are full of symbolic meaning in constructing Tongkonan traditional houses. The crystallization of basic values and value orientation as the noumena (meaning) behind the socio-technical architectural phenomenon of the Tongkonan traditional house that stands upright is because five pillars support it as a representation of 5A (Attractions, Accessibility, Accommodation, Amenity, Ansilarity) as a component of tourism development. The Tongkonan roof model, which at first glance looks like a person praying by raising their hands up or to God, the Creator of the universe, is proof of the basic values and orientation of the socio-cultural and spiritual values of the Toraja people. The image of a rooster, sun, and arrangement of horns mounted on the Tongkonan wall proves the rich treasures of local socio-cultural life (local wisdom, local genius) of the local community as a result of creativity and innovation that sustainably has value.

Abstract:
Tongkonan is a traditional Toraja house from South Sulawesi that attempts to remain as an example of Archipelago (Nusantara) architecture. Nonetheless, due to concerns about longevity and compatibility with modern lives, timber-built houses have begun to be abandoned. The purpose of this research is to examine the Tongkonan building's structural principles, sustainability, resilience, significance, and relationship to the environment. The research methodologies included doing a descriptive-qualitative literature review and exploratory analysis to gather evidence that was difficult to get from the field survey. The findings revealed that, first and foremost, Tongkonan House's environmentally friendly design is a sort of architectural reaction to the site's natural circumstances, climate, and geography. Secondly, the Tongkon structure applied a sustainable construction system and was highly resilient in terms of structure and construction. Finally, in Tongkonan, sustainability is about physical form and meaning through the language of form. According to this report, the general architectural design principles have allowed this home to exist till now. Therefore, Tongkonan House is still relevant, and it has to be updated and improved in modern Indonesian architecture.
