Abstract:
The Toronto Raptors’ 2019 National Basketball Association (NBA) championship win, a first for the franchise and for a Canadian team, “turned hockey country into basketball nation” ( CBC Radio 2020 ). Canadians’ burgeoning embrace of the team and the sport seemed to point to a growing celebration of Blackness within the nation. However, we problematize the 2019 championship win to tell a more expansive story about how sport and national myths conceal truths about race and belonging in Canada. We explore two particular cases—the “We The North” campaign and the media coverage of Raptors superfan

Abstract:
Background: When the Toronto Raptors competed in the 2019 National Basketball Association playoffs, fans in Toronto participated in a collective spectating experience by watching games in an outdoor space called Jurassic Park. Analysis: This article analyzes how journalists depicted the Jurassic Park watching area as an assemblage of human and non-human matter. In these accounts, bodies and sounds collectively transformed the space into an intimate and emotionally resonant place. Conclusions and implications: These depictions recognize the agency of non-human matter but expose a settler coloni

Abstract:
The National Basketball Association (NBA) faced a major crisis communication challenge following Jontay Porter’s involvement in game-fixing and betting on his own team, the Toronto Raptors. Given the league’s commitment to maintaining integrity and fair competition, the NBA swiftly imposed a lifetime ban on Porter. This study applies Image Repair Theory (IRT) to analyze the crisis communication strategies used by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, Raptors President Masai Ujiri, and Porter himself. Through qualitative rhetorical analysis, the research examines official statements, media

Abstract:
In the summer of 2018, the Toronto Raptors engineered a trade that would forever change the history of their franchise. The blockbuster trade saw NBA superstar Kawhi Leonard in a Raptors uniform in exchange for then franchise cornerstone DeMar Derozan. The trade was heavily criticized with fans and analysts alike claiming the organization gave up its future for a small chance at a championship. The Raptors went on to win the championship with Kawhi as their centerpiece. By studying their performance in the playoffs as two separate Markov chains, when Kawhi was playing and when he was resting,

As the only Canadian team in the professional United States’ National Basketball Association, the Toronto Raptors adopted the slogan “We the North.” The new slogan is designed to invoke historical myths and narratives of what or who Canada is. The slogan emblematically assumes, as a metanarrative, the mythologized national identity of Canada as distinctly “northern,” revealing itself to be a reproduction of banal nationalism in Canada in the process. It is, however, more than that: it is the appropriation of an imagined northern Canadian, and specifically Inuit or authentic northern (indigenou

The use of hashtags has become an important strategy in digital marketing, anchoring online conversations. The conversations stemming from the use of hashtags can comprise both meaningful dialogue between users and brands, and one-off spontaneous sentiments. As such, hashtags can aid in the formation of a team’s online brand community and can be useful to understand and target key segments of users. In this research, an examination of the Toronto Raptors’ #WeTheNorth campaign in the National Basketball Association was engendered to highlight (a) the types of communication networks formed throu

AbstractSports data analytics has been gaining importance over recent years as an essential topic in applied statistics. Specifically, basketball has emerged as one of the iconic sports where the use and immediate collection of data have become widespread. Within this domain, the hot hand phenomenon has sparked a significant scientific controversy, with sceptics claiming its non-existence while other authors provide evidence for it. We propose a Bayesian longitudinal hidden Markov model that examines the hot hand phenomenon in consecutive shots of a basketball team, each of which can be either

When the Philadelphia 76ers dropped their first two games of the 2022-23 season to two legitimate contenders in the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks, the concern level was pretty low. It was the beginning of the season, and the Sixers were trying to incorporate several new pieces while those teams had the advantage of continuity. When the Sixers lost their third game of the season to the rebuilding San Antonio Spurs, eyebrows were raised, but the team then got the first win of the season over the upstart Indiana Pacers, and there was a sense of relief.
