Abstract:
In February of 2017 after a period of heavy rainfall, a slope destabilized behind Fremont Hall on the campus of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The geology of this slope stability failure is the Franciscan Complex. The Franciscan Complex, when weathered in place, results in clay soil that makes up the typical soil mantle on the hills throughout the region. Peak strength is the typical parameter tested to assess the strength of the soil. For the Franciscan-derived clay, the residual strength is the focus of this study to understand slope failure since the clay is the weakest portion of the matrix in

This thesis presents the design details of an automated modified ring shear apparatus for the testing of unsaturated soils using the axis translation technique. The system is fully automated and it can be used for conducting Constant Load and constant Suction (CLS) shear tests, Constant Volume and constant Suction (CVS) shear tests, Constant Load and constant Water content (CLW) shear tests as well as Constant Volume and constant Water content (CVW) shear tests. In addition to shear tests, the soil-water retention curve (SWRC) can also be generated for the same specimen in the same testing dev

The work deals with issues of evaluation of the shear properties of timber structural materials, particularly CLT elements. The work contains an overview of extensive research so far presented scientific studies dealing with the characteristic shear properties of wood. In the practical part was carried out the experiment dealing with the failure mode of transverse lamellae of CLT elements that were exposed to shear stress. There were observed individual effects that this may affect the material properties. In the first part of the experiment were performed numerical models using FEM. In the se

A period of cement hydration is one of critical in the life span of concrete structures. One of the reasons of collapse of concrete structural elements during and after construction is the error in determining the concrete characteristics at early age. Recently, non-destructive test emerged as a popular way to evaluate the properties of cement-based materials. This test offers continuous measurements of concrete properties as well as ability to monitor any changes in the current state of structural materials. This thesis developed an alternative laboratory element testing method to evaluate the response of the unsaturated soils of rail track foundations under repeated moving wheel loadings. The novel laboratory testing method is more capable of producing the realistic strength-deformation characteristics of the unsaturated soils with the effects of principal stress axis rotation (PSAR), which can be used to redesign the conservative rail track guidelines.

This project aims to study the material mechanics of the soft rock relevant to common slope failure in soft rock. Unlike brittle rock, soft rock often contains few joints. Unless for slope failure resulted from structural instability, relevant material characteristics of soft rock related to slope failure might include (1) degradation, (2) strain softening, (3) creep, and (4) local stress failure. Abstract:
The natural variation of strength properties within brittle materials leads to size effect, a well-known phenomenon whereby the mean strength of a material is observed to decrease as the stressed volume increases. An important implication of size effect is that size adjustment parameters must be incorporated into multi-axial constitutive and failure models used in numerical simulations to predict material response to loading. This experimental study seeks to verify and quantify the presence of depth effect under shear failure in the orthotropic principal material directions of parallel strand

In addition, the formations located at the southwestern Taiwan are usually consisted of the interlayers of sandstone and mudstone. Thus, the weather and geologic conditions are the natural reasons to cause frequent landslides during the raining season on the southwestern Taiwan.
Discrete element method (DEM) modeling is a common way to model particulate systems and processes. Since the number of particles in most pharmaceutical processes is incredibly large, modeling these substantial magnitudes of particles individually using DEM is not computationally reasonable. To simplify the DEM modeling, agglomerates or groups of particles are modeled instead. This change creates a disconnect between the real particle parameter values and the simulated particle parameter values. Thus, efficient and accurate calibration is needed for effective modeling.

The methodolo
