This paper, and indeed the project it represents, is about moving from theory to practice. It is about doing so under trying circumstances—certainly for the professionals involved, but more for the clients and intended beneficiaries. It is about a search for "the right stuff" in one community's quest to better serve refugees and immigrants, particularly those that have been severely traumatized and/or tortured. At the broadest level, it is about applying anthropology and psychology as part of a multifaceted effort to deal with mental health and human rights issues.

PTSD does not include many of the symptoms shown by adults exposed to multiple, sustained interpersonal trauma. Disorders of Extreme Stress Not Otherwise Specified (DESNOS), Enduring Personality Change after Catastrophic Experience (EPCACE) and Adult Onset Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (AO-CPTSD) are ways of defining the syndrome that is believed to develop after such events. The central aim of the current study is to examine structural models of posttraumatic stress symptoms, as measured by the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire-Revised (HTQ-R; Mollica et al., 1992; Mollica, McDonald, Massagli, & Silove, 2004). Participants were international torture survivors who sought psychological treatment from a torture rehabilitation center in the United States.
