Abstract:
This contribution reviews the recent renovation of Z33—House for Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture in Hasselt, Belgium—in the light of its unique implementation of different levels of interiority. The institute is housed in the former beguinage, a site with a rich and layered history and one of the few green public spaces in the city centre. The intervention by architect Francesca Torzo builds further on and strengthens the existing qualities of the site through a creative process of copying and improving. By doing so, she changed the overall appearance of the beguinage, strengthening its quality as an enclosed public space—an intimate yet collective hortus conclusus.

Abstract:
Editorial Summary In »These Are Only Hints and Guesses« Francesca Torzo explores experience, conscience, and culture as territories to reflect on architecture. Tracing back the narratives and stories from the past as a basic foundation of knowledge, she unravels the resonance of history and knowledge within contemporary experience and design in architecture. Based upon what has been, the thinking and making of architecture is always embedded in the stream of memory and tradition, referring to what was there before. Proceeding from this basis, the personal archive of memories fuels the processes of association and imagination. Any idea is integral to a cultural context, while culture is considered to be this stream of consciousness, forming the background to recent lived experience and its projection into future conception and design.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
The ceramic forms in this thesis project represent a study of the sculptural and figurative qualities of the ceramic process. This study includes a search for a personal form language, development of the slab construction technique, and development of a glazed surface appropriate to the work. The subject of the work is the human torso, with the vessel-like forms focusing on the core of the body as a metaphor for the core of the human spirit.

Abstract:
Medical imaging modalities provide effective information for anatomic or metabolic activity of tissues and organs in the body. Therefore, medical imaging technology is a critical component in diagnosis and treatment of various illnesses. Medical image segmentation plays an important role in converting medical images into anatomically, functionally or surgically identifiable structures, and is used in various applications. In this study, some of the major medical image segmentation methods are examined and applied to 2D CT images of upper torso for segmentation of heart, lungs, bones, and muscle and fat tissues. The implemented medical image segmentation methods are thresholding, region growing, watershed transformation, deformable models and a hybrid method
watershed transformation and region merging. Moreover, a comparative analysis is performed among these methods to obtain the most efficient segmentation method for each tissue and organ in torso. Some improvements are proposed for increasing accuracy of some image segmentation methods.

Abstract:
Extension of the percussion technique is implemented by applying vibro-acoustic excitation to the torso surface and using an array of measurement locations on the torso of three healthy human subjects via noncontacting scanning laser Doppler vibrometry. A 3-dimensional finite element model for simulating the vibro-acoustic response of the human upper torso is also developed. The soft tissue, ribcage, sternum and major internal organs were detailed to create an accurate geometric model. Experimental measurements partially validate the FE simulation model.

Abstract:
Light body armor development for the warfighter is based on trial-and-error testing of prototype designs against ballistic projectiles. Torso armor testing against blast is virtually nonexistent but necessary to ensure adequate mitigation against injury to the heart and lungs. In this paper, we discuss the development of a high-fidelity human torso model and the associated modeling & simulation (M&S) capabilities. Using this torso model, we demonstrate the advantage of virtual simulation in the investigation of wound injury as it relates to the warfighter experience. Here, we present the results of virtual simulations of blast loading and ballistic projectile impact to the torso with and without notional protective armor. Our intent here is to demonstrate the advantages of applying a modeling and simulation approach to the investigation of wound injury and relative merit assessments of protective body armor.
