Abstract:
AbstractWe modeled six interventions to study the scenarios’ impact on agrifood systems, undernutrition, access to healthy diets, and the environment. We also assessed the interventions as a group to consider the impact of synergies and complementarities. Our baseline showed that 690 million people were undernourished, and 3 billion people could not afford healthy diets in 2019. The first finding confirmed that ending chronic hunger at a 5% level by 2030 is possible, with key structural interventions to ramp up agrifood systems’ efficiency. Through increased farm productivity and reduction of food loss and waste, the number of chronically hungry people could be cut by 314 million. In addition, 568 million people would be able to afford healthy diets by 2030. The cost of ending hunger represents 8% of the size of global food markets, a sum that can be mobilized and invested to generate impact through food value chains, national economies, and social safety nets. Furthermore, the use of well-targeted social safety nets could provide an additional 2.4 billion people with access to healthy diets. The second critical finding was that various interventions could create synergies. This would become apparent through addressing different causes of hunger. Moreover, aiming to minimize the total cost of interventions and seeking, at the same time, the highest return interventions in terms of reduction of undernourishment and an increase in access to healthy diets could create significant trade-offs in regard to sustainability. Countries would have to redistribute $1.4 trillion annually to fill the income gap of the 3 billion people who cannot afford healthy diets. However, by investing in various interventions, countries can drive down the cost of their safety nets by about two thirds or $428 billion globally, in 2030. Combined interventions can also address environmental trade-offs that are bound to occur.

We have correlated the number of PIs by country with the financial contribution of those countries to the ESA Science programme. We have also investigated issues associated with age and gender of the PIs. Abstract:
Abstract The escalating climate crisis demands urgent action to mitigate the environmental impact of energy-intensive technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI). Lowering AI’s environmental impact requires adopting energy-efficient approaches for training Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). One such approach is to use Dataset Pruning (DP) methods to reduce the number of training instances, and thus the total energy consumed. Numerous DP methods have been proposed in the literature (e.g., GraNd and Craig), with the ultimate aim of speeding up model training. On the other hand, Active Learning (AL) approaches, originally conceived to repeatedly select the best data to be labeled by a human expert (from a large collection of unlabeled data), can be exploited as well to train a model on a relatively small subset of (informative) examples. However, despite allowing for reducing the total amount of training data, most DP methods and pure AL-based schemes entail costly computations that may strongly limit their energy saving potential. In this work, we empirically study the effectiveness of DP and AL methods in curbing energy consumption in DNN training, and propose a novel approach to DNN learning, named Play it straight, which efficiently combines data selection methods and AL-like incremental training. Play it straight is shown to outperform traditional DP and AL approaches, achieving a better trade-off between accuracy and energy efficiency.

Abstract:
AbstractThe 21st century is a perilous time for international collaboration among university actors. Mobility and international exchange have come to a total standstill as the world shelters in place, trying to slow down the course of a pandemic. However, the crisis of hospitality in higher education has been long in the making. Within universities, internationalization has been driven by profits and revenues for decades, while discussions of core values have been cast aside as utopian or idealistic. There are thousands of displaced, imprisoned and exiled academics, and there are millions of university-aged refugees in the world, with only a tiny fraction of them entering universities. Beyond university walls, scepticism toward the other has been brewing, popularizing xenophobic nationalism and construing mobility as a threat that must be curtailed or regulated to new extremes. As some governments have turned to authoritarianism, universities have become targets, and government actions have resulted in significant numbers of displaced and unemployed academics, many of whom look beyond national borders to find spaces where the pursuit of their ideas is less threatening and where they can exercise their intellectual calling. Responding to these needs requires hospitality, which is not unprecedented, but that has become a lower priority among many others such as the constant pressure to move up the rankings or league tables.

Abstract:
AbstractHere we describe a simple and inexpensive protocol for preparing ex vivo rodent phantoms for use in MR imaging studies. The experimental animals are perfused and fixed with formaldehyde, and then wrapped with gauze and sealed with liquid latex. This yields a phantom that preserves all organs in situ, and which avoids the need to keep fixed animals and organs in containers that have dimensions very different from living animals. This is especially important for loading in MR detectors, and specifically the RF coils, they are usually used with. The phantom can be safely stored and conveniently reused, and can provide MR scientists with a realistic phantom with which to establish protocols in preparation for preclinical in vivo studies—for renal, brain, and body imaging. The phantom also serves as an ideal teaching tool, for trainees learning how to perform preclinical MRI investigations of the kidney and other target organs, while avoiding the need for handling living animals, and reducing the total number of animals required. This protocol chapter is part of the PARENCHIMA initiative “MRI Biomarkers for CKD” (CA16103), a community-driven Action of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) program of the European Union, which aims to improve the reproducibility and standardization of renal MRI biomarkers.

An increasing number of articles in professional journals in safety field address the natural fit between safety and quality. As a group, safety professionals strive to improve organizational performance through application of loss control and safety management techniques. The total quality management (TQM) philosophy also emphasizes improvement of overall organizational performance via application of quality management concepts and techniques. Abstract A predictive model for helical end milling forces is developed using a predictive machining theory, which predicts cutting forces from input data of workpiece material properties, tool geometry and cutting conditions. In the model, each tooth of a helical end milling cutter is discretizised into a number of slices along the cutter axis to account for the helix angle effect on the cutting forces. The cutting action of each of the slices is modeled as an oblique cutting process. For the first slice of each tooth, it is modeled as oblique cutting with end cutting edge effect and tool nos

Abstract: Introduction. An analysis of labor intensity as a factor in the labor process that can affect flight safety is of great importance in assessing the working conditions of civil aircraft pilots. At the same time, the existing approaches to assessing labor intensity have a number of shortcomings that do not allow an objective quantitative assessment of the load on the central nervous system and sensory organs, do not take into account the many algorithms of the pilot's actions at different stages of the flight, and a number of criteria for sensory loads do not reflect the real levels th

Abstract Traditionally, fatigue analyses of offshore bridge structures are calculated separately for the wind and the wave load processes. The total accumulated fatigue damage is often calculated by combining the calculated accumulated fatigue damages from these two processes by using analytic expressions. One widely used approach to combine fatigue damage from wind and wave load is the method from DNV-RP-C203 [1]. It is demonstrated that the use of this method may lead to conservative estimations of the fatigue damage for certain hot spots. Applying conservative values for the accumulated fat

Based on this, the core of work is to maximize the maintenance return on investment (ROI). Maintenance ROI is the ratio between invested money in maintenance to mitigated risks due to maintenance actions. The objective is to minimize maintenance cost while maximizing assets integrity and availability. The increasing automation of high-stakes decisions with direct impact on the lives and well-being of individuals raises a number of important considerations. Prominent among these is strategic behavior by individuals hoping to achieve a more desirable outcome. Two forms of such behavior are commonly studied: 1) misreporting of individual attributes, and 2) recourse, or actions that truly change such attributes. The former involves deception, and is inherently undesirable, whereas the latter may well be a desirable goal insofar as it changes true individual qualification. We study misreporting
