Abstract:
A method for in vivo determination of orientation and relation in space of components of total hip prosthesis is described. The method allows for determination of the orientation of the prosthetic components in well defined anatomic planes of the body. Furthermore the range of free motion from neutral position to the point of contact between the edge of the acetabular opening and the neck of the femoral component can be determined in various directions. To assess the accuracy of the calculations a phantom prosthesis was studied in nine different positions and the measurements of the space oriented parameters according to the present method correlated to measurements of the same parameters according to Selvik's stereophotogrammetric method. Good correlation was found. The role of prosthetic malpositioning and component interaction evaluated with the present method in the development of prosthetic loosening and displacement is discussed.

The applicable bending moment equation of LIPCA is necessary even though the fiber layer ply orientation is changed. The aim of this research is to evaluate the relationship between the total effective moment (ME) and Bernoulli-Euler bending moment (M) when the ply orientations of unidirectional CFRP, which is one of the various laminate configurations in LIPCA, are changed. Since the related previous equation between the performance stroke range (h) and the radius of curvature (ρ) was just applicable to the CFRP ply orientation [0], it will be modified using these results. The related modified equation, which has nothing to do with the various CFRP ply orientation, is also suggested and compared with the previous equation.

PurposeThis study aims to examine the joint effect of entrepreneurial orientation (EO), market orientation (MO), total quality management (TQM) and organisational performance in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA's) small and medium enterprise (SME) sector.Design/methodology/approachThis paper used a quantitative research design. A total of 393 questionnaires were distributed to and collected from owners/managers of SMEs in KSA to acquire requisite data for examining the hypothesised model of the study. Partial least squares structural equation modelling was used to analyse the research data.FindingsThe results indicate that EO, MO and TQM are positively and significantly related to the organisational performance of SMEs. In addition, the findings reveal that TQM has contributed the most to the enhancement of organisational development, which is followed by EO and finally, MO.Practical implicationsDeveloping economies consider SMEs as an approach to generate new jobs and enhance economic growth. The results provide owners/managers, practitioners and academicians with an enhanced understanding of the relationship and effects of EO, MO and TQM on organisational performance, particularly in the SME sector. Thus, owners/managers are guided to develop improved and further effective decisions for the implementation of TQM practices with strong EO and MO. Consequently, firms realise superior performance and continuously compete within their market.Originality/valueFrom the perspective of developing countries, this study contributes to the existing literature by providing empirical evidence regarding the effects of EO, MO, TQM and SMEs' performance. This study is the first to empirically examine the SME sector within the KSA's economy regarding the new orientation among decision makers in terms of increasing the significance of non-oil activities. This study also confirms the usability of resource-based view theory and strategic orientations variables in the KSA SMEs.

The main goal of this study is to compare the impact of Web-based information on surface, deep and total learning, on satisfaction and on navigation information of subjects with different study orientations. Three subject groups were selected and each group included only subjects with a specific study orientation: A meaning study orientation, a reproduction study orientation and a disorganized study orientation. After studying a Web-based presentation on ‘Global Warming’, subject's performance was evaluated regarding surface, deep and total learning, satisfaction and navigation style. Results show that, first, subjects with a disorganized study orientation score lower on deep learning and on total learning than subjects with a reproduction study orientation and, second, subjects with a disorganized study orientation felt easier to navigate in the Web-system than subjects with a meaning study orientation (although they visit more pages and spend less time in each one than subjects with a meaning study orientation).

Abstract:
Aims The aims of this study were to determine the change in pelvic sagittal alignment before, during, and after total hip arthroplasty (THA) undertaken with the patient in the lateral decubitus position, and to determine the impact of these changes on acetabular component position. Patients and Methods We retrospectively compared the radiological pelvic ratio among 91 patients undergoing THA. In total, 41 patients (46%) were female. The mean age was 61.6 years (sd 10.7) and the mean body mass index (BMI) was 20.0 kg/m2 (sd 5.5). Anteroposterior radiographs were obtained: in the standing position preoperatively and at six weeks postoperatively; in the lateral decubitus position after trial reduction intraoperatively; and in the supine position in the post-anaesthesia care unit. Pelvic ratio was defined as the ratio between the vertical distance from the inferior aspect of the sacroiliac (SI) joints to the superior pubic symphysis and the horizontal distance between the inferior aspect of the SI joints. Changes in the apparent component position based on changes in pelvic ratio were determined, with a change of > 5° considered clinically significant. Analyses were performed using Wilcoxon’s signed-rank test, with p < 0.05 considered significant. Results Intraoperatively, in the lateral decubitus position, the pelvic ratio increased (anterior tilt) in 69.4% of cases, did not change significantly in 20.4%, and decreased (posterior tilt) in 10.2% of cases. When six-week postoperative radiographs were compared with preoperative radiographs, the pelvic ratio decreased in 44.9% of cases, did not change significantly in 42.3%, and increased in 12.8% of cases. This change in alignment correlated with a change in acetabular component version of > 5° in 79.6% of cases intraoperatively and 57.7% of cases at six weeks postoperatively. Conclusion Changes in pelvic sagittal pelvic position occur throughout THA that, if unaccounted for, introduce errors in acetabular component placement. Abstract:
The effects of hedonic and eudaimonic orientations on individual well-being have received much scholarly attention. However, the empirical findings from previous research are not consistent, raising the question of when the pursuit of hedonia and eudaimonia lead to actual improvements in individual well-being. We argue that the relationship between orientations to happiness and well-being outcomes are moderated by orientation priorities, which reflect the relative level of importance individuals place on eudaimonic motives compared to hedonic motives. A total of 312 Chinese undergraduate students completed surveys assessing hedonic and eudaimonic orientations, orientation priorities, and well-being outcomes, including psychological well-being, positive affect, and negative affect. The results revealed that a eudaimonic orientation was positively related to psychological well-being, a hedonic orientation was positively related to positive affect, and both relationships were moderated by orientation priorities. For individuals who prioritized eudaimonia over hedonia, both orientations improved well-being. For individuals who prioritized hedonia over eudaimonia, the benefits related to well-being from both orientations decreased or disappeared. These findings suggest that orientation priorities are of equal importance in regard to hedonic and eudaimonic orientations.

DNAs of individual chromosomes violate, albeit perhaps by only one in a thousand bases, Chargaff's second parity rule, which is that Chargaff's first parity rule for duplex DNA (A = T, G = C) applies, to a close approximation, to single stranded DNA. If the "top" strand of one chromosome has A > T and the "top" strand of another has T > A, can they complement to approach even parity (A = T)? Assignment of orientation to the six chromosomes of Caenorhabditis elegans is said to have been arbitrary and, of 26 (= 64) possible combinations of top (T) and bottom (B) strands, the GenBank orientation (designated "TTTTTT") is but one. Yet, for the W bases (A and T) the chromosomes in the GenBank orientation complement to reduce the Chargaff difference (A–T) to only 200 bases (i.e. only one in 323,658 bases does not have a potential Watson-Crick pairing partner). This suggests that the assignment was not arbitrary. However, the GenBank orientation for the S bases (G and C) allows an approach to even parity less well than many other orientations, the best of which is BBBBTT (indicating a disparity between the GenBank orientations of the first four autosomes and those of chromosomes V and X). Although only the euchromatic regions of Drosophila melanogaster chromosomes have been sequenced, there are orientations that allow an approach to even parity. We conclude that, with respect to their Chargaff differences, the chromosomes of C. elegans have the potential to engage in interdependent base accounting. Since this might also apply to D. melanogaster, even when heterochromatin-associated DNA rich in tandem repeats (microsatellite DNA) is excluded, then heterochromatic DNA might not normally participate in the hypothetical accounting process.

Aim: To evaluate the changes in ankle joint line inclination in patients who had total knee arthroplasty due to degenerative osteoarthritis. Material/Method: Sixty-two knees (with a mean age of 71,66±6,78 years, follow-up 52,34±27,42 months) which had undergone total knee arthroplasty between November 1996 and May 2014 were included in this retrospective study. The knee joint line orientations (KJLO) of the prosthesis and ankle joint line inclination (AJLI) relative to the floor were evaluated on postoperative standard standing long-leg X-rays. The AJLI relative to the floor was defined as the angle between the tangent to the subchondral plate of the talus and the horizontal grid line on radiographs. In order to determine the effects of KJLO and high varus on AJLI, patients were divided into two each groups that were pre-operative mechanical axes (MA) as <20° (n=35, group1) and >=20° (n=27, group2) and post-operative MA <3° (n=32, group a) and >=3° (n=30, group b). In addition, the changes in AJLI were compared between each group. The patients were regrouped as either <=3° (n=28, group i) or >3° (n=34, group ii), in terms of the postoperative KJLO. Inclination angles of the prosthesis were compared between each groups. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS v18. Results: Mean MA of pre-operative and post-operative were 16,35±6,56° and 3,92±3,35°, respectively. All ankle inclinations were lateralized. AJLI, were significantly decreased from pre-operative mean 7,37°±3,19° to post-operative mean 3,71°±2,22° (p<0,0001). The mean of change was 3,65°±3,03°. However, pre-operative AJLIs were significantly increased in high varus group (group1: 6,34°±2,54°, group2: 8,70°±3,48°, p=0,003); post-operative AJLIs did not differ significantly (group1: 3,55°±2,36°, group2: 3,92°±2,05°, p=0,516) with respect to the MA. The changes in preop-postop AJLI’s were significantly higher in high varus group again (p=0,009). When the KJLO groups were compared, pre-operative AJLIs were significantly different (group i: 6,25°±2,33°, group ii: 8,29°±3,53°, p=0,004) while post-operative AJLIs did not differ significantly (group i: 3,46°±2,38°, group ii: 3,92°±2,08°, p=0,489). Conclusion: Pre-operatively high varus knees also had high ankle varus, hence ankle deformity was corrected by the restoration of the optimal lower limb aligment. Obtaining parallel orientation of the components relative to the ground, restored the AJLI. Pre-operative planning and convenient implantation of the components lead to achieve optimum knee orientation which restored the ankle joint line orientation independent from mechanical axes. Not only the goal of optimum mechanical axes but also optimum knee joint line orientation’s importance was demonsrated.

Aims.Findings that describe the mental health risk associated with non-heterosexual orientation in young and middle-aged adults are from cross-sectional designs or fail to discriminate homosexual and bisexual orientations. This study examines the mental health risk of homosexual and bisexual orientation over an 8-year period.Methods.Participants were from the age-cohort study, the Personality and Total Health Through Life Project, were observed twice every 4 years, and aged 20–24 (n = 2353) and 40–44 (n = 2499) at baseline.Results.Homosexual orientation was unrelated to long-term depression risk. Risk for anxiety and depression associated with homosexual and bisexual orientations, respectively, were attenuated in fully-adjusted models. Bisexual orientation risk associated with anxiety was partially attenuated in fully-adjusted models.Conclusions.Non-heterosexual orientation was not a major risk factor for long-term mental health outcomes. Instead, those with a non-heterosexual orientation were more likely to experience other mental health risk factors, which explain most of the risk observed amongst those with a non-heterosexual orientation.

We investigate the use of different surface orientations for collaborative design tasks. Specifically, we compare horizontal and vertical surface orientations used by dyads performing a collaborative design task while standing. We investigate how the display orientation influences group participation including face-to-face contact, total discussion, and equality of physical and verbal participation among participants. Our results suggest that vertical displays better support face-to-face contact whereas side-by-side arrangements encourage more discussion. However, display orientation has little impact on equality of verbal and physical participation, and users do not consistently prefer one orientation over the other. Based on our findings, we suggest that further investigation into the differences between horizontal and vertical orientations is warranted.

A CT-based navigation system is helpful to evaluate the reamer shaft and the impactor position/orientation during unilateral total hip arthroplasty (THA). The main objective of this study is to determine the accuracy of the Navitrack system by measuring the implant's true anteversion and inclination, based on pre- and postoperative CT scans (n=9patients). The secondary objective is to evaluate the clinical validity of measurements based on postop anteroposterior (AP) radiographs for determining the cup orientation. Postop CT-scan reconstructions and postop planar radiographs showed no significant differences in orientation compared to peroperative angles, suggesting a clinical validity of the system. Postoperative AP radiographs normally used in clinic are acceptable to determine the cup orientation, and small angular errors may originate from the patient position on the table.

Purpose The Purpose of this paper is to examine the difference in the performance of Small Business using Entrepreneurial and market orientation. There is solid empirical evidence confirming the importance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in economic development. Using entrepreneurial and market orientations, this paper investigates the extent to which this strategic orientation contributes to the superior performance of manufacturing SMEs. Design/methodology/approach A total of 171 SME managers participated in the survey research. Multiple and linear multiple regression were applied to test the hypotheses. Findings The empirical result reveals that integrating entrepreneurial and market orientations into the operation of SMEs contributes to superior performance, which in turn enables them to thrive in institutionally complex and economically turbulent environments. Except for innovativeness, each dimension of entrepreneurial orientation along with market orientation has a positive influence on business performance of small businesses. Practical implications Developing economies see SMEs as a path out of poverty, thereby realizing industrialization and sustainable growth. There is a keen interest to adopt proactive policies so as to create competitive domestic industries. Conversely, this can only be realized if states develop policy measures that prioritize or at least emphasize on highly growing SMEs rather than creating jobs that are neither productive nor decent. Originality/value The present paper confirms previous findings and contributes additional evidence that suggests working on entrepreneurial and market orientations of SMEs will improve performance and compensate the multi-dimensional constraints imposed by the existing market in developing economies. The finding of this study offers important insights for managers and policymakers.

This study explores the factors that contribute to problematic gaming among players of Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMOs for short), in particular, the game World of Warcraft. It examines motivations based on the Self Determination Theory (SDT) and motivations based on Yee’s player orientations. A total of 128 gamers participated in the online survey. Results showed that achievement and immersion player orientations are correlated with extrinsic motivation in terms of external, introjected and identified regulations, as well as intrinsic motivation. Social orientation is only correlated with identified regulation and intrinsic motivation. Problematic gaming is also correlated with all types of extrinsic motivation, and intrinsic motivation, as well as with achievement and immersion player orientations but not with social player orientation. Achievement orientation and introjected regulation both positively predicted problematic gaming, while identified regulation negatively predicted it.

It has long been recognized that varying achievement goals elicit varying motivational patterns with varying behavioral consequences. Several sets of contrasting goal orientations have been proposed to explain differences in language students' achievement behaviors. A total of 135 third-year (n = 54 male; n = 81 female) students in a preservice English teacher education program participated in this study of goal orientation. The proposed goal orientations were measured by adapting the Goal Orientation Scale developed by Skaaalvik (1997) for the L2 learning domain, and students' language achievement was measured by a TOEFL test. Results indicated that students placed most emphasis on task mastery goals and that this was related to language achievement. Task mastery goals are negatively correlated with work-avoidance. Self-defeating ego orientation is positively correlated with both work-avoidance and self-enhancing ego orientation. The analysis also suggested that male students had a stronger tendency to avoid work.

Abstract:
Purpose: To assess the accuracy of total knee replacements (TKRs) performed using CT-based patient-specific instrumentation by postoperative CT scan. Method: Approval from the Ethics Committee was granted prior to commencement of this study. Fifty prospective and consecutive patients who had undergone TKR (Evolis, Medacta International) using CT-based patient-specific instrumentation (MY KNEE, Medacta International) were assessed postoperatively using a CT scan and the validated Perth protocol measurement technique. The hip-knee-ankle (HKA) angle of the lower limb in the coronal plane; the coronal, sagittal, and rotational orientation of the femoral component; and the coronal and sagittal orientation of the tibial component were measured. These results were then compared to each patient’s preoperative planning. The percentage of patients found to be less than or equal to 3° of planned alignment was calculated. One patient was excluded as the femoral cutting block did not fit the femur as predicted by planning and therefore underwent a conventional TKR. Results: Ninety-eight percent of patients were within 3° of planned alignment in the coronal plane reproducing the predicted HKA angle. Predicted coronal plane orientation of the tibial and femoral component was achieved in 100% and 96% of patients, respectively. The sagittal orientation of the femoral component was within 3° in 98% of patients. The planned sagittal positioning of the tibial component was achieved in 92% of patients. Furthermore, 90% of patients were found to have a femoral rotation within 3° of planning. Eighty-six percent of patients achieved good-to-excellent outcome at 12 months (Oxford Knee Score > 34). Conclusion: We have found that TKR using this patient-specific instrumentation accurately reproduces preoperative planning in all six of the parameters measured in this study.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and total quality management (TQM) on the performance of small- and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises. Design/methodology/approach Frameworks for describing EO and TQM derived from the literature were reviewed and used to develop a questionnaire. The hypothesized relationships of this model are tested with the data collected from 121 manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by using AMOS. The approach has been directed toward justification of EO and TQM strategy for its support to competitive manufacturing in the context of Indian manufacturing industries. Findings The results indicate that EO plays an influential role on the adoption of TQM strategy, and also has a direct effect on firm performance (FP). The results also indicate that the significance of the direct effect of EO on FP is reduced when the indirect effect of EO through TQM is included in the total effect model. Firms with higher level of EO will be more successful in adopting TQM strategy, which helps them in developing new capabilities that allow them to achieve better performance. Research limitations/implications The research is cross-sectional in nature and, therefore, it does not permit us to account for the lag between implementation and performance. Second, the performance measures are subjective and may be subject to response bias. Practical implications The study presented in this paper offers entrepreneurs, academics and practitioners a better understanding of the relationship and impact of the EO and TQM on the manufacturing performance. Thus, entrepreneurs and practitioners will be able to make better and more effective decisions about the implementation of TQM practices. Originality/value By linking EO strategy and TQM practices to world-class manufacturing practices and performance in Indian manufacturing SMEs, this research adds a new dimension to study of world-class manufacturing and more generally to the best practices and practice-performance debates. This knowledge is important and unique, because it emphasizes that in addition to quality management practices, which are focused on efficient process management aspects of the organization, EO should also be given equal emphasis, in order to improve manufacturing performance of SMEs.

Introduction: Despite having been largely understudied, one of the crucial components of a team’s success in rugby is accurate passing. This study identified biomechanical correlates of the rugby ground pass and accuracy performance.Methods: Sixteen club players (height 1.77±0.04 m; mass 86.8±16.8 kg) undertook a combined total of 96 passes and their respective body kinematics were analysed concurrent with measurements of pass accuracy at 10 m. Two distinct types of body orientations were found to be utilised by the players: a side-on orientation (pelvic rotation >80 °) and a front-on orientation (pelvic rotation <80 °).Results: Side-on body orientation passes were more accurate than front-on body orientation passes (p<0.0001). Fair relationships were present between the pass accuracy and upper body and hip kinematics for the two distinct body orientations individually. However, no common relationships were observed between the different orientations.Conclusion: Therefore different strategies exist within players to perform the ground pass with varying grades of accuracy.

It is based on standard antero-posterior radiographs and computes the angle between prosthesis and film plane from the shortening of predefined distances in the projection. The error of the method is less than 5 per cent for the stem orientation and less than 10 per cent for the neck orientation. The method allows accurate control of stem orientation by means of standard equipment in orthopaedic practice.

Abstract A 2-yr study was conducted on a Tifton loamy sand (fine-loamy, kaolinitic, thermic Plinthic Kandiudults) soil near Sasser, GA during the 2001 and 2002 growing seasons to determine the effects of three plant row orientations (single, twin, and multi-row) and two plant populations on the pod yield, market grade, and stem rot disease incidence of peanut when irrigated with subsurface drip irrigation (SDI). Seeds were planted at the recommended rate [20 seeds/m; 1.0R (recommended rate)] and half the recommended rate (10 seeds/m; 0.5R). Plots were irrigated daily to replace estimated daily evapotranspiration (ETa). Twin row orientation had the highest pod yield with 5407 kg/ha compared with the other row orientations, which averaged 4897 kg/ha. Market grade (total sound mature kernels, TSMK) for the twin and diamond row orientation was 1% point higher (74.7%) compared with the single row orientation. Pod yield was 8.5% greater for the 1.0R seeding rate compared with the 0.5R seeding rate. Stem rot incidence was highest in the single row orientation and lowest in the diamond row orientation. Within the three row orientations, kernel size distribution characteristics showed jumbo kernels had mixed percentages, with medium and ones showing no differences. The 1.0R plant population did have 4.4 % more jumbo kernels than the 0.5R plant population. This study indicates that twin row orientation and planted at the recommended rate (1.0R) had the best pod yield and market grade compared with single row orientation when irrigated with SDI.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand the relationship between two business orientations, namely, entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation, and innovativeness taking into account the moderating influence of environmental munificence. Design/methodology/approach This is a multiple respondent quantitative study. A total of 312 marketing managers middle level and above from 79 firms participated in the survey. Multiple regression and hierarchical multiple regression was the method of choice for data analysis. Findings Findings indicate that environmental munificence moderates the entrepreneurial orientation – innovativeness relationship. Findings reveal that even though a significant impact of entrepreneurial orientation is not present on innovativeness, this insignificance may be due to environmental munificence. Market orientation has a direct positive impact on innovativeness, and environmental munificence negatively moderates this relationship suggesting that when the environment is less munificent, the market orientation – innovation link becomes stronger. Practical implications Managers should be aware that the more munificent an environment becomes, having an entrepreneurial orientation will be more important for innovativeness. In addition, results of this study suggest that being market oriented more strongly impacts a firm’s ability to innovate in non-munificent environments where growth opportunities are undesirable. Originality/value This study is unique in that it is a multi-respondent study with respondents from different layers of each participating organization, incorporating the moderating impact of the business environment’s munificence on business orientations–innovativeness relationship.

Participants from an individualistic society (USA) were compared with participants from a collectivistic society (Turkey) in terms of moral reasoning and orientation (justice and care). A total of 396 undergraduates (203 U.S. students, 193 Turkish students) between the ages of 18 and 46 years were administered the original version of the Defining Issues Test and the Measure of Moral Orientation. Turkish participants received higher mean principled scores than did the U.S. participants, and female participants received higher mean principled scores than did male participants. Turkish participants also scored significantly higher on the justice and care orientations than U.S. participants, and female participants scored significantly higher on the justice and care orientations than male participants.

The present study examined the relationship between religious orientation and mental health symptoms among Turkish students. A total of 341 undergraduate students between the ages of 18 and 26 completed the Brief Symptom Inventory and Age Universal Intrinsic-Extrinsic Scale. Extrinsic orientation was found to be correlated positively with symptoms of anxiety and depression. There were also significant correlations between hostility scores and both intrinsic and extrinsic religious orientations. Patterns were similar to those reported previously, but correlations were mostly in the .10–.14 range. In multiple-regression models, extrinsic orientation emerged as the only significant predictor for hostility, anxiety, and depression; however, only 2% of the variance was explained.

The main aim of this study was to investigate the mediating role of general causality orientations within Self Determination Theory in the relationship between adult attachment styles and various psychopathological symptoms (depression, OCD symptomology, and general psychological symptoms). Total 750 participants were consisted of 558 female and 192 male. Results of a mediation analysis demonstrated that: autonomy orientation have shown positive effect to statistically significant predictors for various psychopathological symptoms, but having impersonal orientations have shown negative effect. Control orientations have negative effect to statistically significant predictors only for OCD symptomology. Different level causality orientations for each individual was found to be suited for the role of partial mediation this relation, and autonomy orientation was found to have more positive roles than control and impersonal orientations. This relationship is differential with respect to gender effect and anxious or avoidant attachment patterns.

The texture sheet in the surface region and in the central region consists of a set of stable orientations. The surface region mainly consists of recrystallization orientations; the texture of the central region is formed by a set of deformation orientations. The surface orientations of the sheet are rotated by 90° around the transfer direction relative orientations of the central region. The recrystallization texture components reproduce deformation texture components. Recrystallization replaces texture in the local region. With transverse flow (near the edges) in hot rolling, the stable orientation {112}<110> is formed in the surface region. The recrystallization process does not take place at the edges of the strip.

This paper proposes a novel approach for estimating vehicles' orientations from still images using "eigen color" and edge map through a clustering framework. To extract the eigen color, a novel color transform model is used for roughly segmenting a vehicle from its background. The model is invariant to various situations like contrast changes, background, and lighting. It does not need to be re-estimated for any new vehicles. In this eigen color space, different vehicle regions can be easily identified. However, since the problem of object segmentation is still ill-posed, only with this model, the shape of a vehicle cannot be well extracted from its background and thus affects the accuracy of orientation estimation. In order to solve this problem, the distributions of vehicle edges and colors are then integrated together to form a powerful but high-dimensional feature space. Since the feature dimension is high, the normalized cut spectral clustering (Ncut) is then used for feature reduction and orientation clustering. The criterion in Ncut tries to minimize the ratio of the total dissimilarity between groups to the total similarity within the groups. Then, the vehicle orientation can be analyzed using the eigenvectors derived from the Ncut result. The proposed framework needs only one still image and is thus very different to traditional methods which need motion features to determine vehicle orientations. Experimental results reveal the superior performances in vehicle orientation analysis.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of Swedish school leaders’ relational and management work orientation, in terms of both techno and socio structure dimensions. The background is the neoliberal policy regime, underpinned by OECD and PISA, and an increased focus on school leaders’ management work. Design/methodology/approach In total, 26 school leaders in a Swedish municipality were interviewed, and their responses were analysed to score their expressed orientations in terms of techno structure (object and formal) and socio structure (person and symbolic) dimensions. Findings The school leaders had predominantly formal work orientations, expressed in comments about organising teams, scheduling teacher meetings, shaping working routines in meetings, making plans and (in some cases) creating an infrastructure. Scores for object (goal and result) and symbolic dimensions of their management orientation were low. Practical implications The results suggest a need to increase Swedish school leaders’ attention to object aspects, and both person and symbolic aspects of the formal or organising dimension, of their work. They also indicate the importance of establishing and communicating core symbols in compulsory schooling, like democracy and equity, to avoid external accountability pressures instrumentally shaping schools’ management. Originality/value In contrast to previous research, the analysis indicates that Swedish school leaders have a predominantly formal and organising work orientation, frequently with little clear goal and results orientation, or attention to professional needs and motivations of the teachers (important aspects of person orientation).

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of implant orientation and implant material on tibia bone strain, implant–bone micromotion, maximum contact pressure, and wear depth at the articulating surface due to total ankle replacement. Three-dimensional finite element models of intact and implanted ankle were developed from computed tomography scan data. Four implanted models were developed having varus and valgus orientations of 5° and 10°, respectively. In order to determine the effect of implant material combination on tibia bone strain, micromotion, contact pressure, and wear depth, three other finite element models were developed having a different material combination of the implant. Dorsiflexion, neutral, and plantarflexion positions were considered as applied loading condition, along with muscle force and ligaments. Implant orientation alters the strain distribution in tibia bone. Strain shielding was found to be less in the case of the optimally positioned implant. Apart from the strain, implant orientation also affects implant–bone micromotion, contact pressure, and wear depth. Implant materials have less influence on tibia bone strain and micromotion. However, wear depth was reduced when ceramic and carbon fibre–reinforced polyetheretherketone material combination was used. Proper orientation of the implant is important to reduce the strain shielding. The present result suggested that ceramic can be used as an alternative to metal and carbon fibre–reinforced polyetheretherketone as an alternative to ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene to reduce wear, which would be beneficial for long-term success and fixation of the implant.

Magnetic interpretations are usually carried out either by assuming induced magnetization and estimating the model geometry, or by presuming a known source spatial orientation to estimate the total magnetization. We present a 3-D magnetic interpretation method that estimates simultaneously the total magnetization direction and the spatial orientation of the source. It is based on the approximation of the anomaly by the series derived from expanding the magnetic potential into multipoles and retaining source moments up to second order. The moments and linear combinations of moments appearing in the series are then inverted from the magnetic anomaly. The total magnetization is assumed constant in direction but not in magnitude. It is also presumed implicitly that the anomalous distribution of magnetization intensity has nonzero values in a finite‐volume region, is far from the observation points, and presents three othogonal planes of symmetry intersecting at the center of the dipole moment. The method is essentially linear and requires no a priori explicit assumption of a fixed geometry for the sources. The method is particularly suited to interpret compact, isolated or disjoint, but spatially correlated sources. If the source satisfies all assumptions presumed by the method, it is possible to obtain accurate, stable estimates of the total dipole moment vector, the position of the center of dipole moment, and the directions of all three principal axes of symmetry. If the source is not far from the observation plane and/or if the total magnetization direction is not constant, it is still possible to obtain accurate and stable estimates of the direction of the mean total magnetization and the projection, on the observation plane, of the center of dipole moment. The method is applied to magnetic data from the Gulf of Guinea Seamount. The estimated magnetic palaeopole is at 50°48′S and 74°54′E which is in good agreement with estimates published by other authors.
