Abstract:
This paper explores the ongoing construction of hockey in Canada through a textual analysis of the popular comedy, Goon (2012). Touted by its authors as “the Canadian sequel to Slap Shot” and “an homage to enforcers”, Goon is analyzed in relation to simmering debates about fighting in hockey as well as the broader crisis of employment and masculinity that characterize the sociopolitical milieu in which the film circulates. A crisis of masculinity narrative is found to emerge in and through a discourse about working-class labor that both celebrates and devalorizes violent labor and the capitalist relations in which it is embedded. The analysis provides insight into the interlocking relationships among texts and contexts as well as the role of sport films in perpetuating dominant ideologies about violent labor in hockey.

Abstract:
A Marxist feminist standpoint positions patriarchy and capitalism as mutually beneficial, thus interestingly situating the new market of male contraceptives (MCs). This project takes an in-depth look at the opinions of 15 young men regarding the use of MCs by examining how Western, heterosexual masculinity informs their attitudes and discusses how a new economic market of MCs may affect current social ideologies about of the sexual division of labor. Because notions of masculinity are essential in perpetuating such ideologies, understanding masculinity as it relates to a new market for MCs is imperative. During a series of focus groups men described this relationship in terms of responsibility, control, sexual pleasure, cost, gendered ideologies, and side effects. As a result of this research, I argue that the emerging market for MCs may simultaneously strengthen power dynamics and restructure labor practices within the sexual division of labor.

Abstract:
Their emotional performances, their psycho-physical approach and their focus on objectives and circumstances open up new perspectives on gender and genre and lead to a deconstruction of the standard notions of genre. Keitel has become an iconic actor of independent cinema, by helping new directors and actors; and stands out with intense performances, which explore the darkest sides of humanity. Steiger excels in showing solitude, ambiguity and ambivalence, and acts various parts, such as Napoleon, Mussolini or Al Capone. Both actors study the American interpretation of Stanislavsky’s Method, and choose to become character-actors, rather than stars. Indeed, their inner acting primarily relies on the creation of a character, keeping in mind the complex relationship between Moi social and Moi créateur, and leaving aside their concern for their own image as actors. Through the detailed analysis of their performances in different genre movies, it comes to light that comedy, romance and drama allow the actors to free their performance from masculine stereotypes and to express their imagination as auteurs

My intention with this essay has been to examine how men’s tears are portrayed in three chosen films and what their crying does to their masculinity. In my analysis I have used the concept of hegemonic masculinity. I have worked from the assumption that in our culture men’s crying is problematic in some sense. By using both a semiotic and a discursive method of analysis I have investigated why and how these men are crying, and I have mapped out the similarities and differences between the three films. My conclusion is that the effect on the crying man’s masculinity is largely dependant on the degree of his previous fulfillment of hegemonic masculinity.

Abstract:
American composer Jake Heggie's For a Look or a Touch exists as the only classical music work of remembrance based on the topic of remembering homosexual victims of the Holocaust. The composer, after being approached by Mina Miller, wrote this 2007 composition as part of the Music of Remembrance concert series. The music of this work varies in style from a blazing swing dance to a haunting vocalise on "oo." Gene Scheer created the text, delivered in the work by the characters Manfred Lewin and Gad Beck, as a compilation of many influential stories from the documentary film Paragraph 175. For a Look or a Touch chronicles the horrendous treatment of homosexuals before, during, and after World War II. Chapters include an introduction to homosexual persecution during Hitler's reign, a look at current works of remembrance and how For a Look or a Touch came to fruition, an explanation of the texts created by Gene Scheer, a discussion on Jake Heggie's musical setting of this text, and avenues for possible future research. Appendices include text of the German anti-sodomy laws as written in Paragraph 175, the mission statement for the organization Music of Remembrance, transcripts from personal interviews with both Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer, correspondence with Heggie, and the source delineation of Gene Scheer's text.

Viney, Rowena. "Everyday interaction in lesbian households : identity work, body behaviour, and action." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2015. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/16780.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about the resources that speakers can draw on when producing actions, both verbal and non-vocal. It considers how identity categories, gaze and touch can contribute to action in everyday interactions. The study stemmed from an interest in how lesbian identity is made relevant by lesbian speakers in everyday co-present interaction. A corpus of approximately 23.5 hours of video-recordings was gathered: households self-designated as lesbian (including couples, families, and housemates) video recorded some of their everyday interactions (including mealtimes, watching television, and playing board games). Using the tools of Conversation Analysis and working with the video recordings and transcripts of the interactions, several ways of making a lesbian identity relevant through talk were identified. As the analysis progressed, it was found that many references to sexual identity were produced fleetingly; they were not part of or integral to the ongoing talk, and were not taken up as a topic by participants. Rather, this invoking of a participant s sexual identity appears to contribute to a particular action that is being produced. It was found that invokings of other identities, for example relating to occupation, nationality, and race, worked in a similar way, and this is explored in relation to explanations and accounts. Where the first half of the thesis focuses on verbal invokings of identity in relation to action, the second half of the thesis considers some of the non-vocal resources that participants incorporate into their actions. It was found that when launching a topic related to something in the immediate environment, speakers can use gaze to ensure recipiency. Also, when producing potentially face-threatening actions such as teases, reprimands or insults, speakers can use interpersonal touch to mitigate the threat. In addition to showing how identities can be made relevant in everyday interaction, the findings of this thesis highlight the complexity of action design, and that in co-present interaction the physical resources available to participants also need to be taken into account.

In ASME 2016 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2016-65975.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to develop a working fluid with the proper viscosity to mimic blood flow to evaluate an ablation catheter. We proposed a working fluid that matches the blood viscosity, using glycerol-saline solution or xanthan gum (XG)-saline solution. We compared the two solution mixtures at various concentrations (for glycerol-saline solution, 10%, 30%, and 50%; for XG-saline solution, 0.10%, 0.11%, 0.12%, and 0.13%) by measuring their temperature dependence on viscosity. To test the developed working fluids, RF ablations were performed with both solutions, and the flow around the catheter during ablation was observed by particle image velocimetry (PIV) method. In addition, to test the efficacy of the solution mixtures, myocardium was observed after it was soaked separately in the two solution mixtures. The viscosity of both kinds of solution mixtures increased at higher concentrations and decreased with increasing temperatures. At 37°C, the viscosities of 50% glycerol-saline solution and 0.11%–0.13% XG-saline solution were 3–4 mPa·s, a value that is similar to the viscosity of blood. The upward flow resulting from heat convection by ablation was observed around the catheter in the PIV analysis using an in vitro model without flow. The solution mixture with the higher viscosity flowed at a lower velocity around the catheter, and the myocardium soaked in 50% glycerol-saline solution shrunk into a black and tough tissue. On the other hand, the myocardium soaked in XG-saline solution showed no change in color or shape. In conclusion, the XG-saline solution is a superior option for evaluating ablation catheters.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Many mature gas reservoirs in China have very low formation pressure, like Yakela, Dalaoba, Kekeya etc. The formation pressure coefficient ranges from 0.6 to 0.9. Conventional well killing fluids easily leak into the formation and damage the well productivity. There are alternative well killing fluids in the industry to kill low-pressure formations, including foamy fluid, oil-based emulsion fluid and well killing fluid with density reducing agent. However, the densities of these alternative well killing fluids are mostly higher than 0.8 g/cm3, and the cost is high if large volume of density reducing agent is used to decrease the density to lower than 0.8 g/cm3. In this paper, a formula of nitrogen foamy well killing fluid is developed and successfully used in sand removal operations in low-pressure gas reservoirs. A series of tests are conducted to select the optimal foaming agent, foam stabilizer and other additives. Sodium dodecyl sulfate is selected as the foaming agent. However, the properties of Sodium dodecyl sulfate are not stable in hard water, so we use dodecyl dimethyl betaine with sodium dodecyl sulfate together to increase the foaming ability in tough water environment like in the desert area. Xanthan gum is selected as a foam stabilizer because it can thicken the fluid phase and reduce the drainage speed. Gelatin is also added into the formula because it can form stable coacervate with xanthan gum. The concentration of each additive is also optimized through lots of tests. Then the properties of the foamy well killing fluid are tested. Its density is between 0.50-0.80 g/cm3 and is adjustable. Under the temperature of 150°C, its plastic viscosity is 51mPa.s; its yield point is 51.5 Pa; the half-life period reaches 3055min. These basic properties meet the requirements of being used as well killing fluid. Salinity tolerance and oil resistance tests are also conducted to see the toughest environment that the fluid can be used in. The results show that the formula can be used in the oilfield where the water salinity is less than 100000 mg/L and the oil content is less than 15%. A model of calculating the equivalent density of the foam is developed. Scenarios of field application and onsite maintenance are also established. If a completion operation or a workover operation lasts for more than 24 hours, the foamy fluid needs to be maintained every day to guarantee its performance in the wellbore. The newly formulated well killing fluid has been used in three wells in Yakela condensate gas filed in Tarim Basin, western China, where the formation pressure coefficient is 0.67 and the formation is strongly water sensitive. A foamy well killing fluid density of 0.72g/cm3 was used (surface density 0.53 g/cm3) for the sand removal operation in well Ya2-2-4. No fluid loss has been observed during the whole operational process. Neither gas seepage nor oil overflow has been observed during well killing. The well has recovered from production after workover and the production rate reaches 90×103m3 natural gas with 12t condensate oil every day. The new formula of foamy well killing fluid not only shows good laboratory properties under 150°C, but also proves to be a good solution to the downhole operations in low-pressure and depleted reservoirs.
