Abstract:
This paper explores the ongoing construction of hockey in Canada through a textual analysis of the popular comedy, Goon (2012). Touted by its authors as “the Canadian sequel to Slap Shot” and “an homage to enforcers”, Goon is analyzed in relation to simmering debates about fighting in hockey as well as the broader crisis of employment and masculinity that characterize the sociopolitical milieu in which the film circulates. A crisis of masculinity narrative is found to emerge in and through a discourse about working-class labor that both celebrates and devalorizes violent labor and the capitalist relations in which it is embedded. The analysis provides insight into the interlocking relationships among texts and contexts as well as the role of sport films in perpetuating dominant ideologies about violent labor in hockey.

Abstract:
Abstract Hard-nosed female investigators Sara Lund and Saga Norén from the extraordinarily successful Scandinavian TV crime series The Killing and The Bridge are the latest examples of female hard-boiled detectives - dysfunctional loners who solve crimes where no one else succeeds. This article looks at the character construct of the hard-boiled male detective, maps these tropes against social expectations of gender norms and then considers how Sara Paretsky constructs an explicitly feminist “tough guy” private eye in V.I. Warshawski. It then analyses how Paretsky’s negotiation and partial subversion of the tropes of the hard-boiled genre are handled in translation, drawing on the German translation of Indemnity Only.

Abstract:
Relying on autobiographies, articles written by the subjects, and oral history, this article analyzes how gender-based polarities affected ten “front-page gals” between 1920 and 1940. It demonstrates how women journalists had to lose their feminine selves to succeed in the male-dominated city room. The women's emphasis on succeeding on individual merit left: them unable to recognize structural discrimination in pay, assignments, and benefits. Nonetheless, their adventurous spirit blazed a trail for future women journalists.

Abstract:
This paper presents a philological and imagological analysis of the mutual contradictions of two types of characters in the corpus of Mediterranean literature. The highlander and the seasider, one brutal and the other imbedded in the hetero-conception of the other, belong to standard Mediterranean literary types, namely archetypes, from myths to the present. Literature on the Mediterranean and about the Mediterranean is abundant with typified descriptions of the highlander being a tough guy, violent, and the seasider as cunning, envious or a serial seducer. The imagology of these types and their mutual opposition is the topic of this philological analysis. The paper focuses on a comparative analysis of this imagotype/stereotype existing throughout the Mediterranean and transmitted from one literature to another throughout the centuries. The aim of the work is to review and summarize the literature concerning the archetypes of the highlander and the seasider in order to have a better understanding of the patterns of imagotypes and archetypes in the collective imaginary represented by Mediterranean literature.

Abstract:
In this work, we designed an interactive stylus interface for touch-screen devices, the wUbi-Pen haptic stylus. The stylus has functions of providing both vibration and impact with a single actuator, and it is a stand-alone system including its own battery and communication module. We present a new interaction scheme on the graphical user interface (GUI) based on sensory feedback events for clicking, drag-and-drop, moving, sliding, highlighting, and drawing. Experiments evaluating stylus performance indicated that the haptic cues improved precise control of GUI elements. A simple interactive digital sketchbook was also implemented, which provided a variety of haptic feedback while drawing and touching objects.

Abstract:
This study assessed the perceived importance of five health issues for gay and bisexual men ( N = 660) using time-space sampling in gay bars/clubs and bathhouses in New York City: “HIV & STDs,” “Drugs & Alcohol,” “Body Image,” “Mental Health,” and “Smoking.” This study compared ratings based on demographic differences, recent substance use, recent sexual risk behavior, and whether or not participants owned a smart device (e.g., “smart” phone, iPad, iPod touch). Contrary to research indicating that gay and bisexual men may be experiencing HIV prevention fatigue, this study identified that HIV and STIs were perceived as most important. Drugs and alcohol and mental health were also rated high, suggesting that providers may be well served to include mental health and drugs and alcohol as part of their comprehensive approach to HIV prevention. A majority of participants (72%) owned a smart device. Smart device owners rated health issues similarly to those who did not, suggesting that such devices may be a useful platform to reach gay and bisexual men for health education and prevention.

Abstract:
We set up guidelines for designing graphic user interfaces (GUI), e.g., software-keyboards, for touch screens easier to used than conventional input (or interface) devices for IT systems such as keyboards and mice. We studied aging and gender differences in the dynamic properties of user pointing on a touch screen. We obtained the following results: (1) Standard Fitts’law did not hold very well when subjects repeated pointing using one finger between two targets close together on the touch screen. Movement-Time (MT) -the time required for pointing- increased linearly with the index of difficulty (ID) - the ratio of distance between targets (D) to target size (S). (2) Neither α -the ratio of the increase of MT to ID- nor β -MT when ID is 0- differed significantly between men and women. (3) α took almost the same value in older, middle-aged, and younger subjects, whereas β differed significantly between these groups. β increased linearly with age. (4) α and β did not differ significantly between left-right and depth in pointing. (5) The practice effect reduced the dispersion of α and β.

Abstract:
Objective: The present research is aimed at formulation and evaluation of okra fruit gum (OFG)-chitosan (CH) impregnated polymer network films. Methods: The film forming property of the gum attained from fruits of Abelmoschus esculentus was enhanced by co-processing it with CH. Estimation of properties including swelling index (SI), film volume, volume index, film surface contact angle with buffer solutions (pH 1.2, 7.4 or 6.8), work of adhesion (Wa), and spreading coefficient was done. Results: The contact angle and SI of OFG-CH film in both acidic and alkaline buffers were witnessed to be lowest when equated with the films prepared with difference in ratios of both gum and CH. Moreover, the Wa and spreading coefficient were less for this film. These results could be attributed to the optimum interaction between –COO− groups of gum and -NH3+ groups of CH.Conclusion: The actual nature of the film found to be tough, flexible, and water resistant. Hence, the results have shown that the films produced have a high potential for use in modified drug release and in food and pharmaceuticals.

Abstract:
Abstract Smartphones are playing an increasingly important role in helping people share information and communicate with each other, as evidenced by an increasing number of applications (or apps), including news, search engine, mailbox, and social networking apps. The more heavily people rely on their phones, the more they begin to take the term “user experience” into consideration when buying a smartphone. Obviously, the key to providing a good user experience is to minimize the response time of each graphical user interface (GUI) operation, such as a touch, slide, or flick. Thus, it is crucial for smartphone manufacturers and mobile app developers to measure the response times to enhance the performance of the device or application. In this article, the authors present the SMArtphone Response Time measuring platform (SMART), a novel and low-cost platform for measuring the response time of a smartphone. SMART consists of a normal 30-fps (frame per second) webcam and a mirror. The proposed platform first simultaneously records the changes on a smartphone screen and the GUI operation shown in the mirror. It then adopts image processing techniques to analyze the latency of the GUI operation. The authors’ validation results show that the measurement error of SMART is less than 1/30 s, which means that SMART is a practical solution for measuring the latency of GUI operations. In addition, they adopted SMART for the measurements and analysis of six different commercial smartphones to further demonstrate its applicability.

Abstract:
We previously developed Windows-based Biochemical Engineering System analyzing Tool-KIT (WinBEST-KIT), a biochemical reaction simulator for analyzing large-scale and complicated biochemical reaction networks. One particularly notable feature is the ability for users to define original mathematical equations for representing unknown kinetic mechanisms and customize them as GUI components for representing reaction steps. Many simulators support System Biology Markup Language SBML; however, since the definition of the algebraic equations (AssignmentRule) and the events are made through an interface that is distinct from the definition of the reaction steps, there are tough works to define them. Accordingly, we have developed a new version of WinBEST-KIT that allows users to define the algebraic equations and the events through the same interface as those used in the definition of the reaction steps and customize them as GUI components appearing in the symbol selection area. The customized algebraic equations and events can thus be visually arranged at any time and any place. It also allows users to easily understand the roles of the algebraic equations and the events. We have also implemented other useful features, including importing/exporting of SBML format files, exporting to MATLAB, and merging the existing models into the model currently being created. The current version of WinBEST-KIT is freely available at http://winbest-kit.org/ .

Abstract:
Perhaps our most learned and knowledgeable informant concerning both the heretics and their persecutors is the great inquisitor, hagiographer and Dominican historian Bernard Gui (1261–1331), who has been immortalized as the personification of evil by Umberto Eco inThe Name of the Rose. In his manual for inquisitors, Gui issued the following caveat concerning the conduct of inquiries into heresy:It is worthwhile noting that if too many questions and answers are raised, the truth is distorted and destroyed as a result of the diversity of persons and events. Rather, it is suitable not to write down all the questions and answers, but only those which touch directly on the substance and character of the event and which more closely appear to express the truth. If in one deposition too many questions and answers are found, another deposition will appear thereby diminished since too little is recorded. When so many questions and answers are written down in a trial, agreement can scarcely be found in the depositions of the witnesses, which should be both considered and avoided.

Abstract:
At precisely the same time that gay and lesbian activists were securing marriage rights for same-sex couples nationwide, courts and “tough on crime” state legislatures were devising new ways to regulate sex. Despite recent estimates that over 750,000 Americans are registered sex offenders, few sexuality scholars have examined the growth of punitive policies regulating sex offenders. In this article, I draw on a unique set of data on the population of sex offenders in the United States to analyze: (1) whether recent trends in sex offender registration mirror those of corrections more generally, and (2) whether these policies disproportionally impact racial minorities. Findings reveal that sex offender registries grew dramatically between 2005 and 2013; that this growth is out of step with concurrent trends in corrections; and that black communities are disproportionately impacted. I conclude by considering whether these data reveal a new mode of “governing through crime” specifically targeting sex. It might as well be admitted that sex is a disgrace. Abstract:
AbstractDue to the increasing number and the complexity of devices in the operation room (OR), which are caused by the diversity and variety of proprietary interface designs, the probability for use errors increases. In order to ensure a safe intraoperative workflow in the OR, integrated OR systems with central work stations have been developed. For this, there also exist concepts for handhelds, which offer touchbased graphical user interfaces (GUI). However, those come along with various limitations, e.g. possibility for one-handed interaction, which is influenced i.a. by the size, the design and the working task. Within our investigations, requirements for an enhanced concept have been gathered by taking into account corresponding standards regarding ergonomics, riskmanagement and usability-engineering. According to DIN EN 60601-2-46, machinery directive 2006/42 EG and guideline VDI/VDE 3850, the stipulated user interface has been designed in order to preselect functions on the touchscreen and their subsequent activation by physical buttons. Furthermore, the accessibility of areas of interest has been considered on the touchscreen, to avoid the re-gripping of the handheld. As a first step, the OR-table control for a tablet has been realized with Microsoft Blend, using a 22’ touch monitor. The usability study has been conducted in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9241-11 and IEC 62366. A group of ten surgeons and OR nurses underwent multiple tasks in the framework of a usability test, comparing the developed concept with a common keypad handheld. The study showed comparable results concerning the usability criteria effectiveness and efficiency. However, the concept clearly outperforms the handheld regarding user satisfaction, in particular due to the higher learnability and the easy transfer of daily-used GUI skills. The current approach motivates to develop a functional model of a touch-based handheld for OR-tables as well as with further integrated OR devices and to conduct additional usability studies.

Abstract:
Cel badania. Celem badania było sprawdzenie hipotezy o istnieniu wpływu środowiska wirtualnego (VR) na zakres funkcjonowania uwagi i wystąpienie efektu rozgrzania poznawczego u osób badanych.
Metody badania. W badaniu wzięło udział 36 osób, w wieku od 20 do 35 lat. Analiza obejmowała porównanie wyników zebranych przed przystąpieniem do gry i po jej zakończeniu w dwóch grupach. Grupa badawcza grała w wirtualnej rzeczywistości, grupa kontrolna na komputerze PC. Badanie w grupie VR przeprowadzono z użyciem Google VR Oculus Rift oraz Touch Motion–Controller. Grupa kontrolna użytkowała komputery prywatne. Obie grupy jako pretest oraz posttest wykonały równoważne wersje testu uwagi i spostrzegawczości TUS.
Wyniki badania.

Rasmussen, Chris. "From Garden State to Gun Control State: New Jersey’s 1966 Firearms Law and the NRA’s Rise as a Political Lobby." New Jersey Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal 6, no. 2 (2020): 85–108. http://dx.doi.org/10.14713/njs.v6i2.214.

Abstract:
In 1966, the New Jersey legislature passed An Act Concerning Firearms and Other Dangerous Weapons, which imposed significant regulations on gun buyers and dealers. Two years later, members of Congress frequently cited the Garden State’s tough gun control law as a model for the Gun Control Act of 1968. Although New Jersey’s 1966 firearms law has received little attention from scholars, the battle over gun control in New Jersey marked a significant turning point in the nationwide debate between supporters and opponents of gun control and exposed political fissures that endure today. The National Rifle Association (NRA) mobilized its membership to pressure New Jersey legislators to reject gun control. In its effort to oppose gun control in New Jersey, the NRA honed its arguments that gun control infringed upon citizens’ Second Amendment right “to keep and bear arms,” contended that gun laws would not reduce crime, and charged that keeping records of gun sales would ultimately lead to confiscation of firearms. The NRA’s fight against gun control in Trenton revealed the organization’s enormous influence and signaled its emergence as one of the most effective political interest groups in the United States.

Roberts, Charles, Graham Wakefield, Matthew Wright, and JoAnn Kuchera-Morin. "Designing Musical Instruments for the Browser." Computer Music Journal 39, no. 1 (2015): 27–40. http://dx.doi.org/10.1162/comj_a_00283.

Full text
Abstract:
Native Web technologies provide great potential for musical expression. We introduce two JavaScript libraries towards this end: Gibberish.js, providing heavily optimized audio DSP, and Interface.js, a GUI toolkit that works with mouse, touch, and motion events. Together they provide a complete system for defining musical instruments that can be used in both desktop and mobile Web browsers. Interface.js also enables control of remote synthesis applications via a server application that translates the socket protocol used by Web interfaces into both MIDI and OSC messages. We have incorporated these libraries into the creative coding environment Gibber, where we provide mapping abstractions that enable users to create digital musical instruments in as little as a single line of code. They can then be published to a central database, enabling new instruments to be created, distributed, and run entirely in the browser.

Abstract:
BackgroundRecently, virtual reality computer simulators have been used to enhance traditional endoscopy teaching. Previous studies have demonstrated construct validity of these systems and transfer of virtual skills to the operating room. However, to date no simulator-training curricula have been designed and there is very little evidence on the impact of external feedback on acquisition of endoscopic skills. The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of external feedback on the learning curves on a VR colonoscopy simulator using inexperienced trainees.Materials and methods22 trainees, without colonoscopy experience were randomised to a group which received structured feedback provided by an experienced supervisor and a controlled group. All participants performed 15 repetitions of task 3 from the Introduction colonoscopy module of the Accu Touch Endoscopy simulator. Retention/transfer tests on simulator were performed 4–6 weeks after the last repetition. The proficiency levels were based on the performance of eight experienced colonoscopists.ResultsAll subjects were able to complete the procedure on the simulator. There were no perforations in the feedback group versus seven in the non-feedback group. Subjects in the feedback group reached expert proficiency levels in percentage of mucosa visualised and time to reach the caecum significantly faster compared with the control group. None of the groups demonstrated significant degradation of performance in simulator retention/transfer tests.ConclusionConcurrent feedback given by supervisor concur an advantage in acquisition of basic colonoscopy skills and achieving of proficiency level as compared to independent training.

Abstract:
On Friday 2nd September 2016, The Guardian published an online article entitled ‘Bishop of Grantham first C of E bishop to declare he is in a gay relationship.’ In response, a large quantity of correspondence was sent to the Bishop from members of the public, the vast majority expressing support. In this paper, we set the empirical data contained in the letters themselves within a context of continuing change in both society and the Church of England. We consider the reactions of the Church at the ‘tipping points’ of social change as it seeks to balance its responsibilities as a guardian of ‘truth’ with the need to keep in touch with modern ways of living. A key concept underpinning our analysis will be the notion of ‘vicarious religion’, which deals with the subtle but continuing relationships between the actively faithful and a wider body of more loosely attached adherents.
