Abstract:
Although youth tourism is an increasingly relevant subject little research have been done regarding the segment’s own perception of their impacts. A consumer perspective was assumed to examine in what ways youth tourism impact places. This study adopts a deductive approach reviewing existing literature regarding youth tourism, impact and place. A case study concerning how youth travellers perceive and evaluate their own impacts was conducted using mixed-methods. Data sources include a survey and in-depth interviews concerning sociocultural, economic, and environmental items. The study concludes that what impacts youth tourism has on places are subject to the place’s current state and ability to host youth travellers. The number of youth travellers and their behaviour determines the local and global sociocultural, economic and environmental impacts that youth tourism has on places. This paper is considered a pre-study that contributes to the development of theory regarding youth tourism.

It is one of the most internationally debated themes, in order to understand how countries can benefit from the growth of this activity, particularly in the social and environmental aspects. The present work consists of a qualitative study with the objective of understanding and describing the phenomenon of tourism, based on an analysis of the behavior of Portugal exports in recent years, as well as the contribution of tourism to them and its importance to Portugal, with the purpose of ascertaining if this should be a future investment for the growth of national exports. The results indicate that the those presented a growth in the period from 2012 to 2016 and with expectations to continue in this direction. In 2016 tourism represented 16.7% in the total of these and 48.2% in services exports. They also show that the portuguese government has created a plan for the future of tourism, establishing goals and measures to monitor tourism growth. They also point out that tourism should be an investment for the future, due to its contribution to export performance and the benefits that it generates at social and environmental levels.

Sigo, N. E. "Analysing the social effects of tourism on residents: the case of Parys, South Africa." Thesis, Vaal University of Technology, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10352/411.

Abstract:
M-Tech Tourism Management
Residents’ attitudes towards and opinions about tourism is important as they are the ones dealing directly or indirectly with tourists and the development of the industry. As one of the key stakeholders their support is needed to grow the industry in a sustainable manner. For South Africa as a developing country tourism is one of the focus areas of development. This growth is supported by a number of initiatives to create more (but also more sustainable) tourism destinations especially for small towns such as Parys (Free State; South Africa). The primary objective was to analyse the social effects of tourism and determine the factors influencing these effects on the local community of Parys, located in the province of the Free State. This was done by conducting an empirical study among residents in Parys. The questionnaire was developed based on similar research done in other communities. The questionnaires were captured in Microsoft Excel and analysed in the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS v 23.0). From a negative point of view residents highlighted the increase in prices of goods and services due to tourism development. From a positive perspective residents felt that the development of tourism lead to more opportunities for people to have fun, more tourists visit the area and the image of Parys has improved. From the factor analysis for social effects the following factors were evident: Business and community effects, Negative social effects, Opportunities for residents, Environmental effects and Cost of living effects. The latter two factors were rated the highest and thus residents felt that tourism lead to an effect on the environment and an effect on their cost of living. This should be monitored so that residents remain positive and do not start to blame tourists for negativities happening in Parys. When analysing the image of Parys from the perspective of the residents the factor analyses revealed three factors namely Infra- and suprastructure, Nature and cultural attractions and Hospitality of which they felt the strongest about the first and the last factor. Clearly from the results these residents enjoy staying in Parys, do not consider tourists to be a threat and welcomes visitors to the area. The social effects of tourism development is, to a certain extent, influenced by gender, language, level of education, age and number of years living in Parys. Overall it can be concluded that residents are fairly happy with tourists visiting Parys and the development taking place due to tourism. They are aware of the negative impacts but the positive impacts currently outweigh the negative impacts. It is recommended to include residents in the development process or at least keep them aware of what is happening, why it is happening and what opportunities it might bring to them. The results of this study differ from that of others indicating that communities are unique and there are unique aspects influencing their opinions regarding the social effects of tourism. The researcher recommended that the private and public sectors of Parys should continue their current practices to uphold the positive attitudes but also consider options where residents can become more involved in the development of the industry.

Abstract:
Placencia Village is one of Belize’s leading “eco-destinations,” due to its sandy-white beaches, coral reefs, and wildlife sanctuaries. While the use of “green washing,” the process of deceptively marketing products, aims or policies as being environmentally friendly, has proven to be effective in attracting consumers who are thought to be environmentally and socially conscious, the exponential growth, coupled with the absence of established policies, represents a significant threat to Belize. This thesis examines the political-ecologic dimensions of rapid tourism expansion in Southern Belize by investigating how the health of the biophysical environment is perceived, what processes are responsible for change, and how these changes are impacting the socioeconomic livelihoods of the local people.

Abstract:
With the onset of tourism growth in the Dominican Republic, particularly in the province of Samana, a unique opportunity for exploration into intercultural interactions between Dominicans and tourists exists. This thesis brings together some of the current studies on intercultural communication in regards to the tourism industry, perceived community attitudes towards tourism, and host-guest relationships in the tourism context. Two groups of Dominicans were studied, those who worked in the tourism industry and those who did not, teachers, respectively. Data was extracted from collected questionnaires and interviews which revealed positive attitudes towards tourism, interest in expanding tourism, and various positive stereotypes towards tourists and about Dominicans themselves. In conclusion, the results were consistent with past research and include present recommendations on how to make the Dominican tourism sector even more receptive to the importance of intercultural communication.

Pacific Island communities may be vulnerable to negative impacts of economic development, which is often considered a strategy for reducing vulnerability to environmental change. Studies that evaluate potential impacts of economic development in isolated communities may be inaccurate to only focus on asking people to anticipate impacts of phenomena they have had minimal exposure to. We used an open-ended approach to evaluate how communities in the Solomon Islands perceived change, and used this information to anticipate potential impacts of the government’s plans to develop tourism. Our results showed mostly negative expectations of change, particularly socio-cultural, which was perceived as being driven by diminishing social capital, foreign influence, and economic development. Despite minimal exposure, locals supported tourism and had more positive expectations of change associated with this activity. Our findings emphasize the need for locally appropriate planning to ensure intended positive impacts of tourism and other forms of economic development.

Abstract:
Tourism is something that today is very common for most parts of the world. Tourism effects is a phenomenon that focuses on the effects of tourism which can affect destinations and residents in different ways. The most common are social, cultural, environmental and economic impacts. The purpose of this bachelor thesis has been to explore if there are any tourism effects and if so, what are they and in what ways can they affect a small rural area as a destination and the effect on the residents. For this purpose we have used an area called Glasriket in Sweden as an example. This study has used both qualitative and quantitative data with a deductive approach. After conducting our research, we then composed a questionnaire. The questionnaire was shared on our personal Facebook pages and also sent out through email to businesses, organizations and municipalities in Glasriket. In total, the empirical data was collected from 74 respondents. The results of the study showed that tourism is often perceived as positive. The positive effects of tourism outweigh the negative. It is clear that tourism has impacts on destinations in rural areas and not only on major cities or coastal areas. One conclusion is that yes, there are effects caused by tourism in Glasriket. There are several environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts in this area. It can also be concluded that tourism affects people and destinations in different ways and the ways the effects are perceived by residents might vary depending on factors such as cultural background, economic status and personal opinions.

Abstract:
The primary goal of this study was to construct and test a Community Relations Model (CRM) that may be implemented by policy makers, tourism planners, tourism managers and tourism developers as they develop tourism policies and manage the social impacts of tourism. Five objectives were derived from the primary research goal. The first objective was to analyse the social impacts of tourism by means of a literature study. This was achieved by examining the theoretical perspectives, framework and models for assessing host community perceptions of social impacts of tourism. In this regard, it was found that the social impacts of tourism are an integral part of sociology. Therefore, the social impacts of tourism may not be successfully addressed without drawing on the methods and perspectives of sociology. This indicates clearly that there is a relationship between sociology and other social science disciplines, particularly tourism management. The host communities' perceptions of tourism may be positive or negative and are critical in policy planning and management because they affect the behaviour of the residents toward the tourists. The second objective was to analyse the role of the community by means of a literature study. This objective was achieved by examining the role of the government, the private sector and the community in managing the social impacts of tourism. It was found that the main roles of the government are to facilitate, coordinate, plan and promote development of the nations and tourists products. The private sector's roles are to invest and promote tourism as well as the country. The community should actively participate in tourism management by seeking partnership opportunities with the stablished private tourism sector, voluntary groups and NGO's. Although the community is expected to playa vital role in the management of tourism, it was found that their actual involvement depends on their awareness of tourism activities, on how they perceive tourism developments and their involvement in tourism related issues. The third objective was to determine the components to be used in order to develop and test the Community Relations Model (CRM). This objective was achieved through both literature and qualitative analysis. Evidence from the literature and qualitative analysis indicates that the Katse community is unquestionably affected both positively and negatively by tourism developments. It was also clear that effective management of social impacts of tourism may be achieved through collaboration and partnership with the government, the private sector and the community. The stakeholders should work together in order to encourage the positive impacts and ameliorate the negative impacts. The community should be involved and made aware of tourism developments in their respective areas. Both the literature and qualitative study revealed the six community relations components: namely, the positive impacts, negative impacts, the role of government, the role of private sector, community awareness and community involvement that, were used to develop a measuring instrument for Katse residents. The fourth objective was to construct and test the CRM based on an empirical investigations. The CRM is intended to guide tourism planners, managers and policy-makers in managing the social impacts of tourism. To achieve this objective, nine research hypotheses were proposed and tested. The sample of 500 Katse residents was drawn from the household population of four villages: namely, Ha-Lejone, Ha-Poli, Ha-Mikia and Mphorosane. A combination of stratified and convenience sampling approaches were used for sample selection. Data was analysed with the aid of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). SPSS with AMOS 16 software was used to construct and test the SEM model. In constructing and testing model A, a two stage process was followed. Firstly, factors were calculated through the use of confirmatory factor analysis for the six community relations components. Secondly, the factors were used for SEM. Due to unsatisfactory data fit in model A, model B was constructed and tested. In constructing and testing model B factor analyses were not performed; instead all the items of each community relations component were used for SEM. In the resulting structural equation model for both model A and B, eight hypotheses were supported and one was not supported (H7). The results of the two models provided similar results; however, model B fitted the collected data reasonably while model A fitted the data poorly. The fifth objective was to make recommendations and suggestions on how the model may be implemented with regard to the management of the social impacts of tourism. It was recommended that the model should be implemented in the area of tourism management. In order to implement the model effectively the role players should know, understand and perform their roles and duties in managing the social impacts of tourism. The successful implementation of the CRM depends on a positive relationship between and among the role players in tourism management. Specifically, it depends on a positive relationship between the role of government, the role of private sector, community awareness, community involvement, positive impacts and negative impacts of tourism. The proposed model needs to be implemented through the partnership and collaboration of the role players in tourism management. which will lead to sustainable tourism. The most important contribution of this study is the construction of a model through which the positive and negative impacts of tourism may be effectively managed.

Kaufman, Randi. "The Social Impacts of Condominium Conversion in the Vieux Carré Neighborhood, New Orleans, La." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2000. https://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2682.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to better understand the effects of condominium conversions, this study explores the nature and extent of the conversion trend, and its social impacts on the Vieux Carré neighborhood. The increasing number of conversions in the Vieux Carré, also known as the French Quarter, has been the focus of recent controversy and has been perceived by many residents as a threat to the viability of the historic district as a neighborhood. Long-term Vieux Carré residents and neighborhood organizations have expressed fears that the converted rental units are being used as short-term rentals to tourists or second homes, which may be contributing to the decline of the neighborhood's residential base. As a framework for understanding the social impacts of condominium conversions in the Vieux Carré neighborhood, this study includes a review of the literature on neighborhood change, neighborhood health, and neighborhood attachment. Since the issue of condominiums is intertwined with the ongoing research on tourism in this historic district, a review of the literature on condominium conversion, tourism impacts and the Vieux Carré also is included. In addition, this study contains the results of a mail survey of occupants of converted condominium units in the Vieux Carré. While survey respondents report formal and informal participation in the neighborhood, only half of the occupants (53%) of the converted units consider the Vieux Carré as their primary residence or are registered to vote in New Orleans. Although many condominium residents do exhibit a sense of neighborhood attachment, half are not present in the neighborhood on a full-time basis; therefore, they have limited opportunities to participate politically on behalf of the neighborhood. The findings of the survey suggest the social impacts of the condominium conversion in the Vieux Carré are likely to contribute to the decline of the neighborhood.

Abstract:

The analyses, studies and research carried out in the last decades have emphasized that Tourism and trips have had negative and positive effects on the populations of tourism destination. Search on specialized literature unveiled the existence of impacts related to tourism development, interaction between tourist-resident and other related influences. Bearing in mind that the residents of tourism destinations are not usually consulted when tourism starts to develop in their municipality, this study aimed at finding out the attitudes of residents about the tourism impacts in three neighborhoods in Laguna, SC Mar Grosso, Magalhães and Downtown. The social psychology and the use of a tool proposed by Molero and Cuadrado (2006) permitted to collect the data for the analysis of the local residents´ attitudes about the Tourism impact in this municipality. The results showed that the positive Tourism impacts are related to new job opportunities, new infrastructure and the consequent incoming money from tourists´ expenses. Among the young residents, the ones who work and the ones who depend on tourism economically, the impacts on their daily life and the importance of Tourism perceived by them showed their positive attitude. The older residents, the ones who do not work and do not depend on the activity economically, showed the most negative attitudes and some dissatisfaction related to the tourist activity and the negative impacts approached by the tool which was applied. Ultimately, the global attitude was positive (+1, 45), balancing the positive and negative effects brought by the development of Tourism in the municipality of Laguna/SC.

Abstract:
Worldwide tourism has become one of the largest and fastest growing industries. Specifically in the South African context, this growth has been confirmed in recent statistics. However, the growth in the tourism industry does not occur without challenges. It brings both benefits and costs to the residents of a host community, consequently generating both positive and negative tourism impacts. Further, it is recognised that once a community becomes a tourism destination, the lives of the residents are influenced by that particular development; thus effecting their Quality of Life (QoL). Only minimal research has, however, been conducted to determine the influence of the perceived impacts of tourism on residents’ QoL, especially in the South African context. A number of theoretical frameworks have been developed in tourism to signify how the perception of or reactions towards tourism of residents in a host community are influenced at any particular stage of development. Pertaining to QoL, various theoretical models have also been created to describe the functioning of the construct. Although theoretical frameworks have been developed that are distinct to tourism and QoL; to date an integrated approach does not exist that explores the influence of tourism on residents’ QoL. In addition to the lack of an integrated approach in literature, the permanency of tourism products too have not yet been examined in literature. Further, permanency has not been examined in order to determine the influence of tourism impacts on residents’ QoL in selected towns, one being a permanent tourism product (PTP) and the other a nonpermanent tourism product (N-PTP). From the above, it can be seen that three theoretical and practical issues exist: (1) only a modest amount of research has been done to determine the influence of tourism impacts on residents’ QoL; (2) an integrated approach does not exist signifying the relationship between tourism impacts and QoL and; (3) permanency as a differentiation factor has not been investigated in host communities. By addressing these issues, a significant contribution will be made to literature, together with the ensuing practical contributions. Therefore, the main goal of the study was to develop a model to indicate the influence of perceived impacts of tourism on residents’ QoL in selected towns; these having specific differentiation made between a PTP and N-PTP. In order to achieve the goal of the study, five objectives were formulated: The first objective was to analyse theoretical frameworks of tourism and QoL and to identify a particular theoretical framework for the study. Specifically, the Social Exchange Theory (SET) was selected from the theoretical frameworks of tourism, while the Bottom-up Spillover theory was designated as it is peculiar to QoL frameworks. Therefore, the derived theoretical framework indicated that an ‘exchange’ process occurs between tourism development and the residents of the host community. More specifically, social exchange arises between the perceived impacts of tourism and life domains in order to establish the QoL of residents in host communities. The second objective was to analyse tourism both as an industry and product in a host community through a review of existing literature. From the literature review, it can be seen that tourism is a growing industry and product, not only internationally but also in the South African context. Permanency as a characteristic was explored comprehensively to define a tourism product while maintaining the differentiation between a PTP and N-PTP. Residents of a host community are noted as important roleplayers in the tourism industry as tourism impacts affect them in PTP and in N-PTP. This importance is emphasised as residents of a host community: (1) influence the tourism experience; (2) determine the attractiveness of a destination and; (3) control the sustainability of tourism in a host community. The third objective was to analyse QoL and its relation to the residents of a host community, once more, through a literature review. From the review, it was observed that QoL has different definitions and views, some more intricate than others. For the purpose of the study, it was determined that QoL can be described appropriately through the Bottom-up Spillover theory. Therefore, QoL is determined through the collaboration of various life domains that, further, may be either objective or subjective in nature. When examining the relationship between tourism development and QoL, it was established that tourism, through tourism products, produces effects that will influence various life domains, consequently determining the QoL of residents in a host community. As with tourism impacts, the QoL of the host community’s residents will subsequently: (1) influence the tourism experience; (2) determine the attractiveness of a destination and; (3) ensure the sustainability of tourism in a community. The fourth objective was to analyse the influence of the economic, environmental, social and cultural impacts of tourism on residents’ QoL and to differentiate between a PTP and N-PTP by using an empirical study. Having in mind that the main goal of the study was to develop a model, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Modelling were conducted on the data. The models, constructed separately for tourism impacts and QoL, were subsequently integrated to determine the influence of the perceived impacts of tourism on residents’ QoL. The model with good model fit statistics and supportive of underlying theory was thereafter accepted for further analysis in order to attain comprehensively the main goal of the study. Thereafter, model development tested permanency of tourism products by specifically determining the influence of perceived impacts of tourism on residents’ QoL in selected towns (PTP and N-PTP). From the latter exercise, no practically significant differences were found between a PTP and N-PTP. Therefore, the model constructed as Stage 3 was accepted as the final model of the study and was given the title of Root’s model of Community TourQoL (CTQ). Specifically, the model signified that positive economic, environmental, social and cultural impacts influence residents’ QoL, while negative environmental and social impacts do not influence residents’ QoL in host community. Furthermore, the model showed that no differences were found between a PTP and N-PTP regarding the influence of perceived impacts of tourism on residents’ QoL. The fifth and final objective was to draw conclusions, indicate contributions, formulate recommendations and present limitations peculiar to the study. The greatest significance of the study is seen in the practical contributions of the study, specifically, the development of Root’s model of Community TourQoL (CTQ). Community and tourism planners and/management can implement the model in both PTP and N-PTP to enhance the positive impacts of tourism; while minimising negative impacts, in order to improve residents’ QoL.

Abstract:
Remote communities stay vulnerable in the face of major socioeconomic challenges. Tourism is often seen as a way to stimulate local economies and increase attractiveness of peripheral destinations, while events are considered to be one of the tools to promote tourism. In this regard, local collaboration is deemed to be crucial for facilitating development in spatially remote areas, where social context plays an important role in formation of entrepreneurial networks. By using the case of a local community festival Aldrei fór ég suður (AFS) in Ísafjörður, Iceland, I investigate relationship between the festival and local tourism entrepreneurs and define opportunities that the festival might provide for sustainable development of the area. Based on data collected from 24 interviews, findings suggest that the impact of AFS on local businesses varies depending on the category of business, its location, seasonality and target group, whereas the festival also contributes to enhancement of destination image, extension of tourist season and attraction of new categories of visitors. Following theoretical framework of social capital and social embeddedness, the main role of the festival is found to be related to enhancement of community pride and contribution to social change within community. On the other hand, results demonstrate general lack of willingness to collaborate and suggest an increased risk of overembeddedness given the self-reliant nature of the festival and its reluctance to commercialization. Discussed suggestions for sustainable destination development include co-branding, packaging for extended stay, transportation options and usage of empty housing for temporary accommodation.

Abstract:
The study presented in this thesis discusses the topic of ASRs through the use of a specific case study constructed at Boscombe, UK. With the main aim to provide an impartial and independent study into the environmental, social and economic impacts of an ASR. The research presented is therefore multidisciplinary in nature, the separate components utilise key techniques from the geophysical, numerical modelling and socio-economic disciplines are combined to present a significant contribution to the knowledge and understanding of ASRs. Whilst previous studies have focused on one of these disciplines, there are no independent detailed studies of a constructed ASR utilising an multidisciplinary approach. The ASR concept and structures are still in their development infancy, the subject has received cursory independent review in the literature. There have been few successful projects, those that have survived structurally in the ocean are not being used primarily for surfing. The Boscombe ASR is an example of high overspend, poor management and construction, loss of geotextile SFC and users deem the project a failure. The consequences of not correctly planning, managing and overseeing the construction has resulted in a poorly viewed project of limited success. All stages of this project could have benefited from thoughtful planning, thereby avoiding this outcome. If lessons are to be learnt from this project then the planning and management are key areas of the process that need addressing. Ensuring that any future ASR projects are securely integrated with the coastal zone management plan will provide sustainability and success. The DPSIR framework approach can be used to highlight and address the causes of problems in the project. This framework enables the various disciplines to be discussed in relation to each other; links can be identified between the environmental, social and economic impacts of the ASR construction. Strict protocols will increase the success of any ASR project. The final crest height of the Boscombe ASR was 0.5 m higher than the final design height, this is a fundamental design flaw that should not be occurring in modern coastal engineering practice. It is suggested that guidelines are written based on this research for the design and construction process of an ASR. The recommendations and guidelines for ASR monitoring are provided by this research. The emphasis for future projects should lie in the final design and in monitoring, baseline field data should be collected to understand the environmental state change and socio-economic impacts. Planning and government proposals should be accompanied by extensive stakeholder engagement ensuring transparency for the project and ownership within the coastal community. The exclusion of stakeholders at key decision points created distrust and misunderstanding towards the Boscombe ASR project. Avoiding unrealistic expectations within the surfing community and wider coastal community was discussed throughout this research, and by others in the literature. This research agrees with these statements, the issue of poor surfability would be improved by a greater area to manipulate the bathymetry. However this would come at a greatly increased cost in geotextile SFCs, which the current construction method is certainly not capable of delivering successfully. It would be recommended in this case that an alternative construction material was used that is resilient to the marine environment and readily adaptable given poor performance. Further testing of materials, both geotextile SFCs and alternatives, are required for the successful advancement of ASR technology.

Humanity's constant search to know and understand the nature and its transformations leads us to questions and in-depth studies, especially listing the actions of Homo sapiens itself as a major modifier of the medium. In this context, we propose to investigate the tourism, with its social and environmental issues, limited and restricted to Rio Quente municipality (GO) through a comparison between the years 1990 and 2014. In addition to the permissive factor for economic development, tourism aroused the interest of scientists and geographers due to environmental impacts, forcing public and private managers to take responsibility and different postures. Thus, this work presents reflections considering the important concepts of Geography in the tourism approach and analysis of the environmental impacts of this activity. To this end, different stages were developed: literature searches, field and / or laboratory. Thus, it appears, at first, one of Tourism Geography literature; in a second time a review of the history of tourism; In a third step in a dialogue with the various authors dealing with the social and environmental impacts; and on the fourth time, we present an analysis of the perception of the human population on the Rio Quente municipality in this regard. Considering the peculiarity of the region, the tourist concentration on his unique place in Sector Esplanada and its great distance from the center and other districts of the city, it was decided to define the sector Esplanada as the main focus of the study. Tourism in Rio Quente municipality (GO), as analyzed, showed an exponential growth after the 1990 The increase in the number of tourists caused, hence the increase in public revenue from tourist activities in Sector Esplanada. This growth showed, however, various environmental issues and the transformation of the local landscape, especially in the sector in question who were the pillars of this study. The results obtained allow us to understand how the tourism phenomenon has influenced the new forms of appropriation and use of space, its commercialization, the willingness of the local culture and landscape. Further, the work allowed the identification of positive and negative impacts generated by tourism activity and turn to issues such as jobs, recreation for the local population, quality of life, income, among others. Therefore, the dissertation discuss the issue of tourism in this municipality goiano through the various concepts and the reality experienced by the native local population, serving as a reference, including, for improved management or actions to balance the identified environmental impacts. To extract relevant information when searching and studying the environmental and tourism issues, this dissertation added information regarding the concepts of geography, specifically, the positive and negative impacts that permeate tourism in Rio Quente (GO). This reflection involves, above all, the local human population, enabling the participation of citizens in the construction of the study, which contributed to the consistent thread of scientific reasoning, aligning it with the theoretical framework presented. The research presented here can only be considered an initiative, a tool and even a warning to the public and private agencies in Rio Quente municipality (GO) and surrounding with regard to the perception that local people have the their environmental projects in Sector Esplanada, to show their satisfaction or dissatisfaction, when comparing the application of economic resources in the 1990-2014 period.

The development of tourism during the last decades has brought up concerns about the impacts on the receiving communities. Although it presents itself as a social-economical alternative, increasing job offers and income revenue, when it happens in a intense and random way in small communities it unleashes a series of social, cultural and environmental impacts The scholars that work on this subject suggest planning and tourism handling as ways to ease the negative impacts and increase the positive impacts. The goal of this study is to show how planning and touristic marketing can contribute to the reorganization of spontaneous touristic activity and ease the social-cultural impacts in small communities. The research was done in the Lavras Novas community, Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais district, which touristic development has been occurring in a intense and random way since 1995. The methodology used was the nonparticipant observation, with use of interviews semi-structured on public entities representatives, private corporations connected to tourism and members of the community. The conclusion was that the reorganization of tourism in that area can be done by planning and strategic use of integrated marketing. This process should be accomplished through establishing target-markets, defined by geographical location, income levels and demographical density; demand research to understand the needs and wants of the tourists; research on the tourist offer to check strong and weak spots of the place; redirecting the tourist offer focusing the creation of packages and tourist excursions, trying to value the cultural scene; use of internal marketing to integrated the whole community in the process; and, finally, the articulation with the intermediate market of travel agencies and transport companies.

Abstract:
The Mediterranean is the world’s number one tourist destination and the biggest tourism region in the world, which has been visited by 260 million tourists in 1990 and what is more, it is expected that this number will increase to 655 million by the year 2025. In the last 10 years Croatia and Turkey became two of the most popular Mediterranean destinations, and joined the trend of a growing number of European cities that are promoting the development of tourism in order to overcome the post-industrial crisis, or as in the case of Croatia, the post-war crisis. Consequently, today both countries see tourism as their economic future. However, to achieve continuous and sustainable development of tourism, three interrelated aspects should be taken into consideration: economic, social, and environmental. The main question that we tried to answer is in what ways tourism is contributing to the sustainable development of the local community - based on the case studies of Alanya in Turkey, and Dubrovnik in Croatia. Both communities have experienced rapid development of the tourism sector in the last 10 years, which still seems to rise continuously. As a result, various impacts have occurred. Some of them are positive and there is an obvious contribution to sustainable development, while some of the impacts have negative influence on sustainability. Alanya is characterized by the 3S or mass tourism, while Dubrovnik is a world heritage city, which is offering cultural tourism. Notably, mass tourism in Alanya and cultural tourism in Dubrovnik have different impacts on a place. Although Alanya has the opportunity to diversify their tourism, mass tourism is still the main tourism activity. Since mass tourism generally involves a large number of people visiting a small area, it can change an area dramatically. What is interesting about Dubrovnik is that its tourism has suffered a series of devastating events throughout history, such as a major earthquake in 1979 and war between 1991 and 1995, which has left the local tourist economy in tatters. However, cultural tourism in Dubrovnik has been proven as a more sustainable type of tourism than the mass tourism in Alanya, which can be mostly seen through the environmental impacts. In Dubrovnik, tourism is used to increase environmental awareness of the local population, and moreover, the city has recognized the financial values of cultural sites, which are used for the protection and preservation of the heritage. While Dubrovnik is putting a lot of effort to preserve its culture and heritage, Alanya’s main aim is to attract more tourists. For that reason, Alanya is much more sensitive than Dubrovnik concerning the possible threats to become an overdeveloped and overcrowded destination. The rich cultural and historical heritage make Dubrovnik a special and unique tourist destination, and therefore it is facing less risk than Alanya that it will be replaced by the other destinations in the near future. What is important for both communities is to be aware that positive consequences of tourism can arise only if, and when tourism is carried out and developed in a sustainable way. In order to achieve positive correlation between tourism and the local community, an involvement of the local population is essential. In Dubrovnik, the local population has been already involved in the implementation of the tourism, but the potential is still not completely used and there is much more to be done. On the other hand, the priority for Alanya perhaps should be a development of the alternative types of tourism with the special focus on the cultural tourism, which would enable Alanya to become a year-round tourist destination and provide more jobs for the local population, as well as greater income for the community. Moreover, earned money could be used for the protection of the environment and cultural heritage, and involvement of the local population in the planning process would arguably lead to more sustainable tourism.

Mozambique holds a potential for tourism development, especially for nature tourism, due to the existence of conservation areas around the country. The Maputo Special Reserve (MES) is considered as one of the most important conservation area and has benefited from investment in order to incruse the development of tourism in the region. Currently the number of visitors to MES has grown substantially with the intention to develop recreational activities related to ecotourism. Now the challenge lies in the way of optimizing opportunities for tourism development in order to achieve economic benefitis reduction the lead to poverty, without degrading the environment. Ecotourism face the demands and environmental discussions has been assumed as an alternative to the tourist market focused on protected areas, as it is believed that this segment is able to reconcile tourism development and simultaneously improve the conservation of the natural environment and still ensure the recovery of local communities and promoting their welfare. This study aims to analyze, from the perception of the local community, social and environmental contribution of ecotourism in Maputo Special Reserve, Mozambique. The research sought to investigate the relationship between ecotourism development in the region and generate benefits for the socio-environmental communities for residents. To achieve the objective, was chosen a critical analysis about the generation of socio-environmental benefits versus ecotourism in which we opted for a qualitative and quantitative approach seeking to establish the degree of agreement and disagreement about the benefits generated by ecotourism through interviews with community members

Tourism until recently a privileged of a few, is nowadays recognised as a part of a life style of an increased number of people. The information related with the last few decades evidence clearly the imporlance assumed by the tourist phenomenon. Tourism is the third worid exportation activity before petroleum industry, and automobiles, with tendency to reach the first place in the next century. According to the forecasts of WTO, it will be in the leaderance as "The biggest activity on the worid". In Portugal, the dimension and importance assumed by tourism, to the national economy and to the development of certain regions, to witch tourism is the principal sector of activity, is easily recognised. But the impact, due to the tourist movements, is not confined to economic aspects: they generate a complex and contradictory frame of effects, with environmental, social and cultural, repercussions, felt essentially at local and regional leveis, provoking important transformations on the resources utilisation, life styles, stmcture of mentalities and cultural uses of the populations. Based on the above assumptions, the fundamental objectives of the present work, are the analyse of the implications of the expansion of the tourist activities in the process of local and regional development. Particularly the contribute from ENATUR, entity that integrates Pousadas de Portugal, to national tourism. In this sense, occurred the "case study", to assess the mission, vocation and values of ENATUR, in the development of regions in witch "Pousadas" are inserted.

In the path of Brazilian energy production, the dams have a leading role in the national development, but also in sociospatial transformations. This study examines the Salto Caxias Hydroelectric Power Plant, its economic and social role in the formation of territories in the urban community that had affected areas. The paper presents an overview of the Brazilian energy production and the sociospatial transformations resulting from the construction of dams, as well as a history of the Brazilian energy sector under the bias of the environmental issue. It was held a conceptual review of some geographic categories used constantly by the literature by studying tourism, such as landscape, place, space and territory, beyond the concept of leisure. Specify the tourism and recreation in the reservoirs and the production and consumption of space by their activities. The methodology used was based on the survey of literature on the topic and empirical research, through questionnaires, interviews and observations in situ. The results obtained allowed to understand the importance that the construction of the Salto Caxias dam had in the new sociospatial dynamics that originated in the urban communities affected. The tank formation as well as its use and use of its banks allowed the leisure and tourism practice in the region. The research revealed the tourism contribution of second homes for the production of space and the (re)creation of the territory.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Tourism and Events Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2011.
In recent years, events have shown rapid growth as types of attraction within destinations, with such events creating a favourable image of a host destination, expanding the traditional tourist season, spreading tourist demand more evenly through an area and attracting foreign and domestic visitors (Keyser, 2002:18). As such, events are starting to become an established element and major part of tourism growth and marketing strategies. East London (in the Eastern Cape, South Africa) has hosted a number of successful events (Buffalo City Tourism, 2010) however no known social impact studies related to the community of East London are known to have been conducted. The purpose of this study was to address this gap and to evaluate the social impacts of events tourism on the East London community. The overall research question in this study was, What are the socio-cultural impacts of events tourism on East London? This was a quantitative study that utilised a survey to collect the data. The sampling frame was the community at the Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa Triathlon 2010 held in East London. Potential participants were included in the sample through utilising a random sampling method. The research instrument consisted of four sections, namely demographic profiling (age, gender, race, marital status, education and income), overall event impact perceptions, reasons for spectator participation, and the social impact perceptions of the respondents. The event attendees were interviewed. No incentive was offered for participation, and participants were assured of the confidentiality of their responses.

Horn, Chrys. "A complex systems perspective on communities and tourism : a comparison of two case studies in Kaikoura and Rotorua." Lincoln University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10182/1606.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses research into the evolution and adaptation of the communities in Rotorua and Kaikoura by using a complex systems perspective. This perspective requires that the analyst look beyond the obvious impacts of tourism such as employment, crowding, and congestion, to the processes that underlie the experiences of local people in relation to tourism. The configuration of the destination, the flows of people in the area, the visitor types and the ratio of hosts to guests all influence a community's interactions with tourists. In small destinations, the effect of host interactions with guests is potentially much greater than is the case in larger destinations. However, in using a complex systems perspective to analyse the effects of tourism on these two destinations, it becomes clear that the impacts of tourism are more than just the impacts of tourists. The impacts of tourism are intertwined with the processes of trust, leadership and decision making occurring both within the community and within the wider regional and national socio-economic systems. As such, local perceptions of tourism are associated with history, geography, local politics and local social processes. As concepts, the meanings of both 'tourism' and 'community' emerge from the experiences people have, and the associations that they make with the two terms. Thus, the meaning of both 'tourism' and 'community' are idiosyncratic and locally defined. Each term means different things to residents in Rotorua and Kaikoura, and each affects how residents perceive tourism in their respective towns. For example, the associations that people make between historical events and processes such as restructuring are quite different in each of the two communities. In Rotorua, tourism is seen as a source of stability, as a phenomenon that confers a higher level of perceived control on the community. In Kaikoura, tourism is seen as a source of change and it confers a lesser sense of perceived control on the community overall. Likewise, the relationship between the local council and the community underlies the sense of security people feel about local decision making processes. This relationship is mediated by a range of processes including the effort that the council put into communicating with community members, the leadership shown by the council, the way in which they facilitate community visioning processes, which then provide a basis for both leadership and decision making. Underlying these processes are community processes of rivalry, competition, cooperation, labelling and stereotyping that all affect the levels of trust that the community have in those around them. Community cohesion (which is not the same as community agreement) underlies a community's ability to work together to manage tourism. Thus using a complex systems approach to analyse the impacts of tourism in two destinations has shown that there is much more to tourism than the impacts of tourists and their activities. Instead, the way the community system interacts with the tourism system gives rise to the impacts of tourism. Tourism can be usefully conceptualised as a process that is inextricably interwoven with history, politics and community interaction processes at the destination level. Perceptions of tourism reflect these processes and the understanding that local people have of them, and the level of control that they feel they have over tourism development. With little trust in local decision making processes, people have a low sense of control over how tourism development affects them. In tourism planning, therefore, it may be more effective to focus primarily on the processes by which tourism development and management occurs in the local area and to look at mitigating the effects of tourists only after building community capacity to adaptively manage tourism in their area. Communities need a sense of control over their world, and this is only undermined when experts and institutions try to advise courses of action without involving a range of community players in the process of managing tourism. Thus, government and other organisations and institutions at local level must focus on working with communities to build local capacity to manage tourism, without imposing on those communities to convince them to 'treat tourists well' or to manage their environment better, so they become more attractive as a destination.

Abstract:
Coastal tourism is one of the most important way of leisure and entertainment in the world, which brings impact in varying degrees to the tourism destination. These effects relate to economic, social, and environmental aspects. With the concept of sustainability being widely used, sustainable tourism has received more attention. However, most studies focus on the tourism impact on the coastal environment, while the social and economic aspects were sparse explorations. Therefore, this research applies the qualitative method to explore the social and economic impact of tourism on the coastal city, Kalmar. Furthermore, the perspective of residents and business owners is the main way to reflect these effects. According to the results of the study, the development of the tourism industry will indeed bring some impact to the coastal city on economy and society. However, due to differences of cultural background and actual situation, these effects are not always the same. For example, for the economic impact of tourism business, the impact on the hotel is more noticeable than the impact on restaurants and bars.

Abstract:
The work observes the positive relationship between culture and tourism and quantifies the economic and social (or socio-economic) impacts of cultural tourism in the Czech Republic. The first part showcases successful cultural projects in the Czech Republic and abroad, which attract tourists and provide destinations with financial resources and create new jobs. The author characterizes these positive economic and social impacts and benefits on the development of the region and analyzes existing studies of socio-economic impacts, normally processed abroad for cultural organizations and attractions. While in the Czech Republic, these studies are not yet very widespread, they represent a a useful document for the organization itself, but also for providers of grants and financial contributions, or for agencies and authorities designing concepts of culture and tourism. The work presents the basic methodologies used by the economic impact studies and further elaborates the most accurate and also the most demanding method of calculating the impacts, input-output analysis. Using this method, the author proposes a comprehensive model for calculating the economic and socio-economic impacts and benefits. The model uses statistical data of Czech national accounts and is intended for Czech cultural organizations attracting visitors. After using financial data of the surveyed organization and the expenditure of visitors, the model can easily determine the impacts of the organization to increase production, gross value added, employment and income of workers in the Czech Republic. The work builds on a lot of foreign findings, which seeks to apply in domestic conditions while using local data.

Muler, González Vanessa. "Furthering social exchange theory in the study of resident impact perceptions: three approximations to the limits to tourism growth." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Girona, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/672160.

Abstract:
This thesis links the limits of tourism growth and social exchange theory (SET) through tourism impacts perceptions of residents. SET has been the most widely used theory to explain the perceptions by residents of tourism since their participation in tourism can be understood as an exchange in which they receive benefits in exchange for costs. In its entirety, this thesis explains the limits of tourism growth through the language of SET and aims to confirm certain aspects of the combination of both. Firstly, it confirms that the indicators of the limits of tourism growth do not necessarily coincide with those of SET since the perceptions of residents may be positive while they are reluctant to accept more tourists. Secondly, four social exchange relationships are identified which pair costs and benefits. These relationships have specific links to the limits of tourism growth which suggests that exchanges that involve limited resources may affect social carrying capacity. And finally, it characterizes the role that values play in the exchange system as perceived by residents. It is noted that residents do not only refer to values typical of tourism growth but also the opposite, those of degrowth, and that the latter have an impact on the way residents perceive tourists and the limits of tourism growth

In scope the annual competition of the Ripcurl Pro Peniche, it is essencial to reflect about the positive and negative impacts on the economic, financial, tourist and social, that the passage of the World Surfing Championship has in Peniche county since 2009. We can say that the economic and financial level, this sporting event has contributed to a strong development of the local economy, once leverage the opening of new business in the Surf sector and beyond, as well as to increase tourism revenue in Peniche county. As for the tourist level allowed the speed of the sport of Surfing development process, and increase demand for visitors to the region. In this way the bathing season increased, and seasonality felt in the winter months has decreased considerably. From the social point of view, it had enough impact on the lives of the resident population, because since 2009 the number of Surf practitioners increased exponentially, contributing to a healthy lifestyle. Furthermore, the increase of existing businesses in the region, allowed the creation of new jobs. As for the negative impacts are considered irrelevant when compared to the benefits that the event brought to the county of Peniche. The conquest of the passage of the World Championship for Peniche is a successful example of the realization of an event that contributed to the development of a region.

The creation of artificial and delusional pleasure spaces of the so-called globalized civilization is producing, more and more, non-places like the resort-type enterprises. According to the principle that production of tourist places is bonded to the fetishization of destines, to fast consummation and the superficiality of the tourist-place relation, these enterprises are causing various environmental, social, economic and space impacts at the communities where they are located. Also considering that the insertion of the first resort at Paraíba s south littoral is relatively recent and the insertion of other enterprises like this is being polemically discussed, it tried to analyze the process of insertion of resorts at Paraíba s south littoral and its social and environmental impacts at the local communities, contributing, pari passu, with the discussion about the development aspect of tourism in the era of globalization. The research was based in concepts like time-space distantiation (GIDDENS,1995), ecological crisis (LEFF, 2009), sustainable development (LEFF, 2009; MENDONÇA, 1999; MOLINA E.,2001; MURPHY, 2001), vacation at ghettoes (KRIPPENDORF, 2000), among others. After the bibliographic review, a field research was realized starting from semi-structured interviews which counted with the participation of 14 representatives divided among the public and private sectors, and local communities. It opted to delimitate the field research to the city of Conde and surrounding communities, as well as the use of the quantitative and qualitative method of approach and the content analysis (BARDIN, 1997). The obtained results revealed the perceptions of the impacts due to the implantation of the first resort at the south littoral through the different social actors involved, demonstrating that the most part of the interviewed is total or partially in favor of this insertion, despite of the majority of the impacts cited is negative. It was seen that the conventional development tourism model, in which are inserted the megaprojects such as resorts, cannot contribute with sustainable development if it excludes the environmental, economic and social sustainability. Besides that, from the presentation of alternative models, it aimed to show that there is no way to promote development without fostering the local principle role and the insertion of the communities in the benefits of the activity.

Abstract:
The tourism industry is one of the fastest growing economic branches in the world. Because of a multiplication effect, which is one of it's important characteristics, it creates suitable conditions for increasing an economic and socio-cultural value of a region. Nevertheless, this value increasing depends on a development level of a region, it's potential to develop tourism and a co-ordination of activities which ensure the potential development. Research was mostly focused on economic impacts of tourism development in regions. But it's impacts on socio-cultural environment are very important as well. If tourism development is managed responsibly in a region it can generate considerable positive effects on local communities (first of all an improvement of living standards, development of public facilities etc.). In the opposite case it can generate irretrievable negative effects, especially changes of local community lifestyle , changes in local social and cultural values or changes in physical environment. On one hand tourism contributes to keep cultural diversity in the world and mediates cognition and interaction between different people and cultures , on the other hand it transmits negative aspects of globalization which tend to affect traditions and specific cultures of particular regions in a destructive way. So the aim of the diploma thesis is to point out psychological and sociological aspects of tourism, it's relation to culture and cultural identity and it's impacts on local communities. The analysis is focused on Prague characteristics and tourism impacts on it's socio-cultural environment.

Abstract: The divergences in opinion among the society groups about the uses and strategies for the territory conservation are usually the responsible for the conflicts in management planning decision. It is generally consequence of perception the individuals have over the territory that is being planned. The measure of this perception is hard because of diversity of variables involved. There are few studies that can, effectively, lead to mutual comprehension and conciliation of all the interests, directed to use or conservation. Under this perspective, this study aims to point a methodological way to identify the differences in perception about environmental impacts in trails among residents, visitants and researchers from a real situation in a conservation unit. The study area was de Paraiso Falls trail, in old Itinguçu State Park, São Paulo. Maps and tables of impact indicators were done before and after visit, and the observed reality was compared to results obtained by written and visual interviewing. The data analysis included qui-square and 1 proportion tests and acceptability graphs. It was expected that the comparison would permit to observe the differences within and among groups over the impacts in the Conservation Area

Mexico promoted the creation of Mahahual as a tourist destination in the south of the state of Quintana Roo. Cruise tourism has evolved particularly in Quintana Roo. The case study was addressed with the Socioecological Systems paradigm, analyzing the environmental impact of recreational tourist activities carried out by cruise passengers, 385 surveys were carried out, the cruise passenger profile was determined, type of recreational tourist activities carried out and land or marine environment. For the environmental perception of the place where they carried out recreational tourism activities, the whole of the sample mentioned the category Excellent and Very Good. In Urban-Environmental Perception, the category with the highest percentage for the sample is Very Good and Good. In both perceptions, the differences between passengers from Canada and the USA were statistically significant (p <0.001). The opinion of the community, the providers of services and the public sector was obtained through interviews, they mention the environmental and economic reality that surrounds them, they present responses to environmental, social and economic problems. The environmental impact of recreational tourist activities was qualified using a traffic light. He pointed out that the high impacts are greater in the terrestrial sphere than in the marine one, the moderates are greater in the marine than in the terrestrial one. Intervention in the management of cruise passengers is recommended in order to preserve the sustainability of the destination or improve it. Sustainable development was evaluated using environmental indicators, the results show that it is time to take action. There is a network of agents and power relations in the tourism system, where investors have been empowered by the activity of cruise tourism. There is no sustainable cruise tourism based on the sustainable tourism model observed in the development planning instruments, the current environmental and tourist regulations.

Public policies have increasingly recognized tourism as a means of reducing social inequalities, fostered the development of the activity at different scales. Despite the expectations created by these policies, tourism has not yet consolidated effective recognition among different sectors of society in relation to its role in local development agenda. This study assumes that the attenuation of social inequalities should conform an elementary goal of tourism development and it is based on the question of what has been the contribution of tourism public policies to achieve this role. Thus, the study covers the municipalities that received the title of tourist municipalities between the 1990s and 2010. It employs the method of difference in differences as an evaluation tool of public policy, complemented by other techniques of statistical analysis. The study seeks to confront social indicators of municipalities covered by the policy with other municipalities not served by this action, in periods before and after the government intervention. In this context, the results of five different scenarios are presented, conformed from different estimation techniques, groups of municipalities and variables. In addition to the impact estimations, tourism government representatives were interviewed. Briefly, tourist municipalities represent a positive increase in income indicators, although its impact on the reduction of inequality has not been identified. Therefore, it can be inferred that social potential of tourism has not been used as a broader conception of this phenomenon supposes. A set of interpretations for the results obtained is presented and discussed, pointing an extensive range of expectations for the touristic development. Recent reformulations in the normative framework of the tourist municipalities suggested that monitoring the developments of the main tourism policy at state of São Paulo remains necessary. It’s consistent, especially under the stimulus of competition between municipalities that have unequal resources for the promotion of tourism. Therefore, the reflections on what is the role of activity for local development and who are the actors that matter in this process remain while a fundamental task in tourism studies and indicate that social inequalities should be focused.

Abstract:
Safranbolu is among the many other tourism destinations of Turkey practicing sustainable and cultural tourism. Like many tourism centers in Turkey, it had been negatively influenced from economic fluctuations of the 1980s period. However, in spite of other tourism centers, it has not much changed and it has been well protected. The reasons for this protection can be explained that Safranbolu entered the World Heritage List in 1994, and so environmental and sustainable planning approaches are adapted to development of town. While protecting its natural and cultural resources, the town is planned and managed. As a result, it is announced as one of the well protected cities of the world. This thesis discusses development of Safranbolu within these sustainable tourismplanning approaches. It aims to explain how the town has been changed after being a tourism destination and to search positive and negative impacts of tourism. The thesis has four objectives
to describe tourism and tourism planning issues, to explain the evolution of tourism in Safranbolu, to search negative and positive impacts of tourism and finally to provide new recommendations on development of Safranbolu. In this respect, it explores the relations between tourism and planning, investigates cultural and spatial reflections of global tourism in the town. To determine these effects, a survey has been carried out during the summer of 2008. According to this, a sustainable and environmental tourism planning method is suggested for the town.

Abstract:
This thesis measures the economic value and social impact of tourism associated with crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) in Tárcoles, Costa Rica. Crocodile tourism is unique compared to other tourism operations in Costa Rica because it is managed locally and has grown in an organic matter. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from tourists and key informants who work, directly or indirectly, in crocodile tourism in the region. The results demonstrated that the economic benefits derived from nature-based tourism is an important strength and incentive for C. acutus conservation in Tárcoles. Bringing in an estimated USD 5,292,073.81 per year (estimated for 2014) in indirect sales, tourism is one of the main economic drivers and is central to the economic development of the region. Furthermore, understanding the social impacts of the tourism in Tárcoles is vital for ecosystem management and sustainability of the crocodile tourism industry.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research work is to demonstrate through academic texts and scientific arguments, the relationship that exists between rural tourism in Amazonian indigenous communities and local identity. Likewise, the methodologies used were; the bibliographic review of academic articles, scientific articles, books, theses and technical publications based on indigenous rural tourism. Likewise, it is considered that tourism affects the Amazonian indigenous communities in different aspects, whether in social relations, adaptation and autonomy of the inhabitants. However, rural tourism manages to attract foreign tourists who obtain economic benefits, but also social disadvantages, such as cultural loss and deterioration of identity. Likewise, it was identified that rural tourism can intervene in a positive way with respect to the territories of indigenous communities, since it can reduce the risk implied by extractive and predatory activities of natural resources, which with tourism would be able to conserve. However, there are also disadvantages that could impact the environment if the implementation of the rural tourism activity is not developed in an adequate way, such as; the destruction of the natural habitat of endemic species, which generates their migration. Finally, after demonstrating the relationship between rural tourism in Amazonian indigenous communities and its influence on identity, it is intended to recommend preventive actions that protect tangible and intangible heritage.

In the framework of "Tourism" in Rural Areas (TER for portuguese "Turismo em Espaço Rural"), we studied negative and positive impact that the tourism has within a certain rural area. The impacts, were verified in three different levels: social and cultural, economic and environmental. In social and cultural terms, the TER, has a positive impact, either for being capable to motivate the local population that elevate the historic and cultural heritage as promoting local gastronomy. In economic matter, it has a positive impact, although some authors don't give it so much credits. Nevertheless, the optimists say it creates employment, maintains population in the rural territory and also contributes for the development of farm activities that supports tourism activity. In environmental terms, the critics state that the TER doesn´t respect the environment and, some others, present this tourism has sustainable which results in great benefits for the rural areas. With the study of the following specific case, there was an opportunity to compare between the theory of this theme and a real project. Through a single case study, there were made several interviews to different economic agents, that are interconnected by business relationship, has it is the case of the owner of this TER itself, some suppliers and also some state agencies, that helped the emergence of this TER. The results obtained, of quality nature, demonstrate the importance of existing a TER as an opportunity to regenerate the rural environment, and consequently results on a reduction of the differences between regions.

Scholtz, Marco. "A critical assessment of the social impacts of tourism in selected South African communities / Marco Scholtz." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/11974.

Full text
Abstract:
Understanding the social impacts of tourism is important as it enables tourism managers and developers to manage the impacts toward fostering vital community support for the industry. More so the distinction between the tangible and intangible social impacts can refine tourism management, development and marketing processes. The measurement and management of these impacts are fairly straight forward in developed countries. However in developing countries, such as South Africa, more challenges exist in identifying and managing their impacts to the benefit of a wider community. South Africa has one of the most unequal distributions of income in the world as well as a very high unemployment rate which all complicates the understanding and management of these impacts. All factors taken into account create prevailing socio-political, economic as well as cultural barriers. This translates into community members not necessarily obtaining tangible benefits from the tourism industry such as increased levels of income, job creation and infrastructure development for instance, which is the ideal situation. The social exchange theory explains that these residents might as a result deter their support for the tourism industry. However it is important to determine which types of benefits will lead to increased levels of community support and therefore the following research questions can be formulated: “What are the tangible and intangible social impacts of tourism on communities and how strong is the role they play in fostering community support for the tourism industry?” Therefore the primary goal of this thesis was to conduct a critical assessment of the social impacts of tourism on selected communities with reference to the tangible and intangible impacts. This primary goal was reached through the achievement of four objectives. The first objective was a critical analysis of literature pertaining to sociology and how communities perceive tourism from a sociological perspective. The review analysed communities’ roles in tourism, barriers that hinder them from partaking in the industry as well as recommendations that were made to overcome the barriers. The term “social impact” as well as models that explain how and why social impacts take place, were analysed. This objective provided a foundation for the rest of the study in terms of social impacts of tourism on communities. The second objective was to critically analyse the social impacts that originate as a result of tourism activity, but to interpret it from a tangible contrasted with intangible point of view. This was done in order to create a better understanding what role tangible and intangible social impacts play, as well as how strong a role it plays in influencing community perceptions. The third objective was to determine the residents’ perceptions of tangible and intangible social impacts of tourism on three tourism dependent communities in South Africa as well as to determine the variables that influence the perceptions of these impacts. This was done with the aim of creating a model for measuring the tangible and intangible social impacts of tourism which will allow for improved marketing and managing of tourism in South African communities. The distinction between the tangible and intangible social impacts of tourism in mind, a selfadministered questionnaire was distributed in three tourism-dependent communities in South Africa by means of probability sampling within stratified sampling. The communities included in the research were Clarens (n=251), Soweto (n=375) and Jeffreys Bay (n=417). The questionnaires were captured in Microsoft Excel and analysed in the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS v 20.0.0), while the software package, Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS v 21.0.0) was utilised for the Structural Equation Model (SEM). The analysis of the data was done over three phases. The first phase was exploratory research which included the use of two-way frequency tables for compiling a combined community profile as well as two Exploratory Factor Analyses to explore the ways in which tangible and intangible social impacts can be grouped. In the second phase, Confirmatory Factor Analyses (CFA) revealed the theoretical model with four reliable tangible social impacts and two reliable intangible impacts. The tangible social impacts included: environmental improvement; environmental degradation; cost of daily living; and economic improvement while the intangible social impacts included: community upliftment and pride and community protection and education. The intangible social impact, community upliftment and pride was perceived as the most important impact, thus revealing the power of intangible social impacts for fostering community support for tourism. Significant to this study it was found that community members remained supportive of the industry, even if they are not directly involved in it. It was furthermore found that the communities are not homogenous which holds major implications for tourism planners and managers. This resulted in further analyses to compare the communities. Analyses were done in order to determine the influence of variables such as tourism perceptions, involvement in the tourism industry as well as residents’ levels of education on the perceptions of the tangible and intangible social impacts of tourism. Very few instances were found where these aspects acted as strong predictors of the perceptions of tangible and intangible social impacts of tourism. During the third and final phase, a model was developed for measuring the relationships between the tangible and intangible social impacts of tourism. This innovative model has been optimised so that it can be applied to other tourism dependents communities in South Africa. This model can thus assist tourism planners and managers to understand the tangible and intangible impacts as a result of tourism in the designated communities as well as how these communities will perceive the impacts. This model thus serves as a tool for maximising the positive social impacts created by tourism and minimising the negative, thus contributing to the sustainable development of the industry. The last objective was to draw conclusions and make recommendations with regard to the objectives of the study. The contributions of the study were also discussed as part of this objective. It was determined that this study makes multiple contributions towards social impact literature in tourism, towards the applicable methodology of determining social impacts in developing countries as well as practical contributions that will inform future planning and development in communities. This thesis firstly contributed towards the literature by distinguishing between tangible and intangible social impacts within a tourism and developmental context. These categorised social impacts can also be used in future research as it contributes to the research methodology through the development of a questionnaire that can measure the tangible and intangible social impacts of tourism within a South African context. This measuring instrument can also be used in future research. The finding which revealed that the intangible element (community upliftment and pride) was the most important to local residents has implications for tourism planning and development. It is therefore a factor that should be taken into account in future research. There are also several practical implications for tourism marketers, managers and developers. The development of the tangibleintangible impact model provides the latter with an instrument that can be used to measure and effectively manage the various social impacts of tourism. It is clear that communities cannot be seen as homogeneous, therefore individual planning should be done based on the character and composition of the applicable communities.

Abstract:
The growth of the tourism industry, and its acceptance as an integral part of Australia's economic fabric has led to increasing attempts by Australian communities to attract tourists. While techniques have been developed for considering the economic, and environmental, implications of tourism for communities, investigation of social impacts has remained relatively unsophisticated. Despite the development of general social impacts assessment methods both internationally (Finsterbusch, Llwellyn, and Wolf, 1983; Canter, Atkinson, and Leistritz, 1986), and in Australia (Bowles, 1981; Wildman, 1985; Robinson and Syme, 1988), there has not been a systematic attempt to apply these methods in the context of tourism development. This thesis argues that the unique characteristics of tourism arise from the interaction of supplier and consumer in the supplier's environment. The need for communities to 'host' tourists emphasises the potential impacts of this interaction. This study adopts a definition of community that considers both geographical boundaries, and the propensity of residents within those boundaries to make use of community facilities. Within the host community, a variety of perceptions of the impacts of tourism may exist. It is concluded that social impacts are the consequences of development on the quality of life of community members. Assessing the social impacts of tourism development involves assessing the threats and opportunities that these developments present to the quality of life. The thesis proposes a method which can be used to gauge the level of resident's participation in the community, their quality of life priorities, and their attitudes to specific tourism developments. The method was piloted in the Central Queensland community of Mt Morgan. Analysis of the pilot study indicated that the social impacts of tourism can be assessed by exploring the interactions between community participation, quality of life, and the attributes of tourism developments. The methodological analysis and pilot study led to the development of the Host Attitudes to Tourism (HATT) Model, which contributes to tourism social impacts assessment by formally modelling the processes of the development of community attitudes to tourism. The thesis does not champion a particular theoretical approach to tourism social impacts assessment, but develops a methodological technique and model which can assist communities in assessing the full range of implications of attracting tourists.

Abstract:
Tropical communities often rely on tourism to support and enhance their well-being. However, traditional tourism planning processes rarely take into account the specific needs of tropical destination communities, and instead approach destinations as collection of resources that can be marketed to attract visitors. This approach, however, does not often deliver the tourism benefits expected by communities. This research project examined tourism as resource for communities, and utilised a community-centred research position. The principal aim of this research project was to explore opportunities that are offered by tourism to improve the well-being of tropical destination communities. More specifically, the research project focused on the social aspects of community wellbeing and the main research question was: How does tourism impact social aspects of community well-being in Australian Tropical communities? Secondary purpose of the research project was to establish a research process that would facilitate research of social impacts of tourism in other destinations. The thesis utilised a mixed methods facilitation approach, that is quantitative research (studies one and two) informed the follow up qualitative research (study three). Introduction to the thesis describes the research rationale, the four research questions for the thesis, thesis structure and the three study sites in Tropical North Queensland, Australia, each with a different scale and style of tourism development. Chapter one provides a literature review on the topic to address the first thesis question: What is community well-being and how can we conceptualise tourism impacts on it? It explores the community well-being concept, and links the discussions on the topic in tourism impact research to the broader social science literature. After a review of the research and relevant theoretical frameworks, a detailed definition of community well-being and a model for understanding tourism impacts on it is proposed. Building on previous research, it is proposed that community well-being consists of three integral dimensions: the external conditions of residents life, residents response to these conditions, and a subjective evaluation of these conditions by residents. Tourism directly impacts the first two of these dimensions, and through affecting these indirectly impacts residents subjective evaluations. It is argued that a holistic assessment of tourism impacts on community wellbeing should assess all the changes in these three dimensions of community well-being that can be linked to tourism. It is further argued that this identification and separation of impacts on the three different dimensions of community well-being can be used to synthesise the findings of the existing tourism impact research as well as pave the way for future theoretical progress in the field. Chapter two describes study one which investigated second thesis question: How do we measure the style and scale of tourism at a local destination for the purpose of comparison of destinations? The aim of the study was to develop a tourism measures framework which would provide a systematic assessment of the style and scale of tourism development at a specific destination and facilitate comparison of tourism destinations, with particular relevance to the research on social impacts of tourism. The study reviewed relevant research on the topic and identified that tourism can be compared on four facets: (1) Stage of tourism development; (2) Tourist/resident ratio; (3) Type of tourists, and (4) Seasonality. Review of research on each of the four identified tourism facets resulted in the establishment of specific variables and measures of those variables for each facet. Analysis of available secondary data for the three study locations was then undertaken. Results described the degree and type of tourism development at each of the three destinations. The study demonstrated that devised set of measures enables construction of suitably detailed tourism profiles for tourism destinations that are representative of the actual tourism development at a destination. The devised framework of measures for tourism facilitates comparative research and can be applied to destinations in Australia, or other countries (by using parallel measures for the identified variables). Chapter three describes study two which investigated the third thesis question: Can we identify links between tourism and social aspects of community well-being? The aim of the study was to develop a theoretical framework and measurement instrument to access social aspects of community well-being, as well as assess residents perceptions of tourism impacts, and perceptions of impacts by different types of visitors. Building on the previous research on the topic, a theoretical framework of social aspects of community well-being was proposed. A survey of residents was conducted at each of the three study communities that assessed social aspects of community well-being and residents perceptions of tourism. Results revealed that the proposed theoretical framework of social aspects of community well-being was mostly supported by data. Further data analysis identified specific links between social aspects of community well-being and type of tourism development. Consistent with previous research, a higher scale of tourism development was linked to increased crime, reduced volunteering, less perceived influence over community development, and more/better community services. However, the results for the study community with most developed tourism did not demonstrate a higher emotional connection to place, community pride or needs fulfilment, which are commonly described as benefits of tourism development. Finally, contact with different types of visitors and its links to support for tourism development were investigated. The results indicate that more involved contact with visitors contributes to more positive impact evaluation, which in turn contributes to support for tourism development. However, while the link between impact evaluation and support for tourism was quite clear, only a small proportion of variance in the impact evaluation was explained by the contact variable. This confirmed that, besides contact with visitors, other significant predictors play important role in shaping residents evaluations of tourism impacts. Chapter four describes study three which investigated that third and last thesis question: How can we devise tourism strategies that maximise tourisms potential to make a positive contribution to social aspects of community well-being? The aim of the study was to use action research to identify ways in which sustainable tourism development could contribute to social aspects of community wellbeing. Workshops were organised with community stakeholders at each study destination. Workshops consisted of a short research findings presentation and a structured brainstorming activity aimed at generating tourism development strategies. The generated tourism strategies addressed specific community issues in the area of social aspects of community well-being, and the process employed provided a useful method for other rural communities to use for tourism planning discussions. Chapter five consist of conclusions and recommendations and addresses the main research question of the thesis: How does tourism impact social aspects of community well-being in Australian Tropical communities? The findings of the three studies are linked together and discussed relevant to the previous tourism impact research. The relationships between tourism and social capital, human capital, community identity and pride, and community services are discussed. The PhD contributes to understanding of social impacts of tourism on community well-being in destination communities and describes a research process that facilitates in-depth analysis of the relationships between tourism and the social facet of community well-being at specific communities.

In this context, the tourism impacts itself may become key component influencing subsequent residents’ attitude and behaviors as regards community development. The hypothetical model was developed by influence of tourism, involvement and attitude as regards community development on residents. A questionnaire survey with 388 respondents was conducted in the Meinong district of Kaohsiung city. A SPSS 17.0 and AMOS 7.0 statistical software were used to examine the proposed hypothesize of the research. The results also demonstrate that the positive and negative impacts of tourism are found as key to influence dimensions related to involvement and residents’ attitudes of community development. Further results indicate that involvement seems to play a moderating role on the relationship between the positive and negative impacts of tourism and involvement and residents’ attitudes of community development. In this study, all proposed relationships appeared to be significant to provide empirical evidence for conceptualizing the Social Exchange Theory. The research includes discussions on theoretical and managerial implications.
