Abstract The score set of a tournament is defined as the set of its different outdegrees. In 1978 Reid [15] published the conjecture that for any set of nonnegative integers D there exists a tournament T whose degree set is D. Reid proved the conjecture for tournaments containing n = 1, 2, and 3 vertices. In 1986 Hager [4] published a constructive proof of the conjecture for n = 4 and 5 vertices. In 1989 Yao [18] presented an arithmetical proof of the conjecture, but general polynomial construction algorithm is not known. In [6] we described polynomial time algorithms which reconstruct the sco

A number of methods have been proposed for predicting game winners in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) annual men’s college basketball championship tournament. Since 1985, more than 70% of the teams in the fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds of the tournament have been high-seeded teams (i.e., teams assigned seeds of one, two, or three); a method that can accurately compare two such teams is often necessary to predict games in these rounds. This paper statistically analyzes tournaments from 1985 to 2009. A key finding is that there is an insignificant difference between the hi

AbstractThis article analyzes the contractual relationship between a wine cooperative (winery) and its member (growers). This relationship is plagued by moral hazard and adverse selection problems in grape quality. Indeed, growers can be opportunistic since the cooperative is unable to observe: (1) their effort level due to imperfect monitoring technology; and (2) their productive abilities (types) due to adverse selection. Because the growers' vineyard practices and efforts are one of the main determinants of grape quality, the cooperative implements an incentive compensation system to induce

Among men, in particular, there is the so-called Championship of the Professional Golf Association (PGA Championship), which is held exclusively for professional golfers. Abstract The modern study of block designs is often said to have begun with the publication in 1936 of a paper by the statistician F. Yates. In that paper he considered collections of subsets of a set with certain balance properties; one of his examples was the following. The second property, that of balance, is desirable in many experiments where for fairness all comparisons between pairs of elements should occur equally often. Designs with this property of balance became known as balanced incomplete block designs; some were listed in the statistical tables of Fisher and Yates in 1938. We now

In sports as in warfare, whose image sports are often taken to be, some forms of interpersonal violence are legitimate. In many sports, physical violence is the core if not the name of the game.
